Is there a relationship between dopamine and rhegmatogenous retinal detachment?

Dopamine and its receptors have been widely studied in the neurological conditions and in the retina. In this study, we evaluated the possible role of dopamine in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment(RRD) by comparing the amount of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid(DOPAC), a surrogate index of retinal dopamin levels, in the vitreous sample of patients affected by RRD with those affected by macular pucker and vitre ous hemorrhage. Our results showed that significantly higher levels of DOPAC were found in the vitreou sample of patients affected by RRD compared with those affected by vitreous hemorrhage and macula pucker(P = 0.002). Specifically, no trace of the substance was found in vitreous hemorrhage and macula pucker samples. A slightly significant positive correlation was found among DOPAC and post-operativ best corrected visual acuity(r = 0.470, P = 0.049). no correlation was found between DOPAC and the day elapsed between diagnosis and surgery(P = 0.317). For the first time our findings suggest that DOPAC i released in RRD, but not in other retinal diseases such as vitreous hemorrhage and macular pucker. More over, we showed a correlation between visual acuity outcome and the amount of DOPAC in the vitreous This might have a potential, although still unknown, implication in the pathogenesis of the disease and/o in the associated photoreceptors loss. This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Rome Tor Ver gata University Hospital(R.S.92.10) on September 24, 2010.

Difficulty scores in laparoscopic liver surgery—getting closer to a powerful and necessary tool

Obtaining standardized difficulty scores for surgical techniques is mandatory. The more accurate the scores become, the better results may be achieved in terms of patients' safety and surgical implementation. This need is especially useful when technically demanding and complex surgical procedures are performed. In this sense, liver resections are difficult procedures with high morbidity and mortality rates that should be performed by experienced surgeons. Hepatobiliary surgery has always been considered as a long-term project that needs patience, expertise and a progressive learning curve. Since the first reported laparoscopic liver resection in 1996, the adoption and implementation of minimally invasive liver surgery has been cautious. However, laparoscopic liver resections have experienced a wide expansion in recent years (1), mainly after the last Consensus Meeting held in Morioka in 2014 (2). One of the statements reported during this Consensus and in the latter European Guidelines Meeting held in Southampton in 2017 (3) is that a need for a safe expansion and control on technical procedures should be encouraged. In this context, liver surgical teams are trying to develop feasible tools that may standardize laparoscopic liver resections.

Breeding effects on the genotype×environment interaction for yield of durum wheat grown after the Green Revolution:The case of Spain

This study evaluates the changes caused by breeding in the genotype by environment(G×E)interaction of the durum wheat varieties most widely cultivated in Spain after the Green Revolution.A set of 12 cultivars was tested in 27 environments,which are understood as the combination of different sites,years,and treatments(water regime and planting dates),representative of the durum wheat growing conditions in Spain with average grain yields(GY)ranging between 2.8 and 9.1 Mg ha^-*** most important environmental factors affecting the G×E interaction for yield were themaximum and the mean temperature during the entire crop *** improvement in genetic yield was observed in warm environments and under optimal water conditions that resemble those where the germplasm originated(essentially as advanced lines)before its release in ***,the adaptation of semi-dwarf durum in Spain has shown a tendency to specific adaptation rather than large-scale *** different patterns of selection have been reported due the G×E interaction and changes in the ranking of genotypes:in the high yielding environments(GY>5 Mg ha^-1),plants favor increased water uptake,with higher levels of transpiration and more open stomata(more negative values of carbon isotope composition,δ^13 C,and higher canopy temperature depression,CTD),whereas,in low yielding environments(GYnts close their stomata and favor greater water use efficiency(less negativeδ^13 C values and lower CTD values).

Green extraction of phenolic compounds from Perle Hallertau and nuggets hop pellets

Operation conditions to recover and quantify active compounds from Perle Hallertau (PH) and nuggets (n) hops, following a sequential combination of ultrasound and microwave assisted ethanolic extraction were studied. Ultrasound treatment (55℃, 60% ethanol, 30 minutes) allowed extracts with phenolic contents of 160.43 mg GAE/g extract and ABTS radical scavenging capacity equivalent to 400.24 mg Trolox/g extract for PH. Optimal conditions for n were found at 55℃, using 60% ethanol for 120 minutes (98.80 mg GAE/g extract) and 55℃, 40% ethanol for 180 min (370.00 mg Trolox/g extract). The remaining solids were further processed under ethanolic microwave extraction (130–190℃, 5 minutes) with the optimal results obtained at 190℃ for PH (77.11 and 98.67 mg GAE/g extract) and n (226.96 and 368.72 mg Trolox/g extract). Results obtained provided hops pellets as a rich source of active compounds that could be suitable for food and no food industry applications.

Gene expression and physiological responses to salinity and water stress of contrasting durum wheat genotypes

Elucidating the relationships between gene expression and the physiological mechanisms remains a bottleneck in breeding for resistance to salinity and drought. This study related the expression of key target genes with the physiological performance of durum wheat under different combinations of salinity and irrigation. The candidate genes assayed included two encoding for the DREB（dehydration responsive element binding） transcription factors Ta DREB1 A and Ta DREB2 B, another two for the cytosolic and plastidic glutamine synthetase（Ta GS1 and Ta GS2）, and one for the specific na^＋/H^＋ vacuolar antiporter（Ta nHX1）. Expression of these genes was related to growth and different trait indicators of nitrogen metabolism（nitrogen content, stable nitrogen isotope composition, and glutamine synthetase and nitrate reductase activities）, photosynthetic carbon metabolism（stable carbon isotope composition and different gas exchange traits） and ion accumulation. Significant interaction between genotype and growing conditions occurred for growth, nitrogen content, and the expression of most *** general terms, higher expression of Ta GS1, Ta GS2,Ta DREB2 B, and to a lesser extent of Ta nHX1 were associated with a better genotypic performance in growth, nitrogen, and carbon photosynthetic metabolism under salinity and water stress. However, Ta DREB1 A was increased in expression under stress compared with control conditions, with tolerant genotypes exhibiting lower expression than susceptible ones.

Purpose:n> Prospective study to evaluate the anti-inflammatory efficacy of isotonic seawater solution on metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) levels in the tears of patients with dry eye disease (DED). Methods: A total of 50 patients were included, with the following dry eye criteria in both eyes: InflammaDryn>? test initially positive, ocular surface disease index (OSDI) score ≥ 12 and Results: The InflammaDry test was positive in 100% of the patients (n = 50) and in 100% (n = 100) of the eyes before treatment. In 14 (28%) patients the test became negative in both eyes, and in 15 (30%) it was negative in one of the eyes. In 43% (n = 43) of the positive eyes, MMP-9 became undetectable in the tear fluid following treatment with isotonic seawater. This change was statistically significant (p Conclusionsn style="font-family:Verdana;">: The washes with ophthalmic isotonic seawater solution have a significant impact on inflammation of the ocular surface in dry eye disease, with an ability to make MMP-9 levels negative in 43% of cases.

Selective uptake of major and trace elements in Erica andevalensis,an endemic species to extreme habitats in the Iberian Pyrite Belt

To assess the ecophysiological traits and the phytoremediation potential of the endemic heather Erica andevalensis, we determined the concentrations of major and trace elements in different plant parts and in rizosphere soils from Riotinto mining district （Huelva, Spain）. The results showed that E. andevalensis may grow on substrates with very high As, Cu, Fe and Pb concentrations （up to 4114, 1050, 71900 and 15614μg/g dry weight, respectively）, very low availability of macro- and micronutrients and with pH values ranging from 3.3 to 4.9. In these harsh edaphic conditions E. andevalensis selectively absorbed and translocated essential nutrients and excludes potentially phytotoxic elements, which were accumulated in the root epidermis. The concentrations of major and trace elements in E. andevalensis aerial parts from the Riotinto mining district were in the normal range for plants; likewise other Erica species it accumulated Mn and only in a very polluted site we measured leaf concentrations of As and Pb within the excessive or toxic limits for plants. Differently from previous studies, which emphasized the soil pH and bioavailability of phytotoxic elements as the main stress factors, this study showed that in the Riotinto region, E. andevalensis can tolerate wide range of pH and toxic element concentrations; the harshest environments colonized by monospecific patches of this species were characterized above all by very low availability of nutrients. The extraordinary capability to adapt to these extreme habitats made E. andevalensis a priority species to promote the phytostabilization and the development of a self-sustaining vegetative cover on Riotinto mine tailings.

The cultivated tomato,Solanum lycopersicum,is highly sensitive to cold stress(CS),resulting in significant losses during cultivation and postharvest fruit ***,we demonstrated the presence of substantial genetic variation in fruit chilling tolerance in a tomato recombinant inbred line(RIL)population derived from a cross between a chilling-sensitive tomato line and a chilling-tolerant accession of the wild species ***,we investigated molecular and biochemical components associated with chilling tolerance in fruit and leaves,using contrasting groups of“chilling tolerant”and“chilling sensitive”RI *** analyses were conducted on fruit exposed to CS,and gene expressions and biochemical components were measured in fruit and *** analyses revealed core responding genes specific to either the cold-tolerant or cold-sensitive RI lines,which were differentially regulated in similar fashion in both leaves and fruit within each *** genes may be used as markers to determine tomato germplasm cold tolerance or *** study demonstrated that tomato response to CS in different developmental stages,including seedling and postharvest fruit,might be mediated by common biological/genetic ***,genetic selection for cold tolerance during early stages of plant development may lead to lines with greater postharvest fruit chilling tolerance.
