The present study deals with the quantification of skid resistance seasonal variation in asphalt ***,skid resistance data were collected twice per year(after"wet"and"dry"seasons)along four trial sections of an urban highway with a GripTester system(during a six-year field experiment).For the estimation of a percentage reference change(%)between wet and dry skid resistance data,a methodology is developed based on distribution fitting of the percentage change of skid resistance index due to seasonal variation *** outcome of the analysis is applied and successfully validated through a set of skid resistance data collected from an interurban highway pavement section with different traffic and environmental *** such the developed methodology can be considered as a promising tool for accommodating the seasonal variation of skid ***,the resulting percentage reference change(%)enables the estimation of skid resistance level for the dry period based on the wet period ***,it seems that the proposed quantification process may constitute a practical yet efficient tool for road authorities and highway operators on how to estimate the effect of seasonal variation on skid resistance levels and schedule well-ahead necessary actions for enhancing driving safety.

The function and conservation of many forest ecosystems depend on the distribution and diversity of the community of rodents that consume and disperse *** habitat preferences and interactions are especially relevant in alpine systems where such granivorous rodents reach the southernmost limit of their distribution and are especially sensitive to global *** analyzed the community of granivorous rodents in the Pyrenees,one of the southernmost mountain ranges of *** species were identified by DNA with particular attention to the Apodemus species,which are prominent seed-dispersing rodents in *** confirmed for the first time the presence of the yellow-necked mouse,Apodemus flavicollis,in central Pyrenees,a typical Eurosiberian species that reaches its southernmost distribution limit in this *** also found the wood mouse,Apodemus sylvaticus,a related species more tolerant to Mediterranean *** rodents were spatially segregated by *** was rare at high altitudes,which might cause the genetic differentiation between populations of the different valleys reported *** also found other seed consumers like dormice,Elyomis quercinus,and voles,Myodes glareolus,with marked habitat *** suggest that population isolation among valleys may increase the genetic diversity of rodents,like *** also highlight the potential threat that global warming may represent for species linked to high-altitude refuges at the southern edge of its distribution,like Apodemus ***,we discuss how this threat may have a dimension in the conservation of alpine forests dispersed by these rodent populations.

Synchrony between seed growth and oogenesis is suggested to largely shape trophic breadth of seed-feeding insects and ultimately to contribute to their co-existence by means of resource partitioning or in the time when infestation *** we investigated:(i)the role of seed phenology and sexual maturation of females in the host specificity of seed-feeding weevils(Curculio spp.)predating in hazel and oak mixed forests;and(ii)the consequences that trophic breadth and host distribution have in the genetic structure of the weevil *** analyses were used to establish unequivocally host specificity and to determine the population genetic *** identified 4 species with different specificity,namely Curculio nucum females matured earlier and infested a unique host(hazelnuts,Corylus avellana)while 3 species(Curculio venosus,Curculio glandium and Curculio elephas)predated upon the acorns of the 2 oaks(Quercus ilex and Quercus pubescens).The high specificity of *** coupled with a more discontinuous distribution of hazel trees resulted in a significant genetic structure among *** addition,the presence of an excess of local rare haplotypes indicated that *** populations went through genetic expansion after recent ***,these effects were not observed in the more generalist Curculio glandium predating upon ***,co-existence of weevil species in this multi-host-parasite system is influenced by both resource and time *** what extent the restriction in gene flow among *** populations may have negative consequences for their persistence in a time of increasing disturbances(*** in Mediterranean areas)deserves further research.

Background:Increasing urbanization as well as global warming requires an investigation of the infuence of diferent construction methods and ground surfaces on the urban heat island efect(UHI efect).The extent of the infuence of the urban structure,the building materials used and their surfaces on the UHI efect can be signifcantly reduced already in the planning phase using a designated OpenFOAM-based solver“uhiSolver”.Results:In the frst part of this research work,it is shown that inner building details and components can be neglected while still obtaining sufciently accurate *** this purpose,the building model was divided into two layers:a surface layer without mass,where the interaction with radiation takes place,and a component layer,which contains all relevant components and cavities of the building represented with mass-averaged material *** has become apparent that the three parameters—albedo,heat capacity and thermal resistance—which have a decisive infuence on the interaction,have diferent efects on the component temperatures and the surface *** the second part of this research work,dynamic 3D computational fuid dynamics(CFD)simulations are performed with uhiSolver for a residential block in *** the simulation results with measurement data collected on site,it is shown that the simplifed assumption of homogeneous material data for building bodies provides very good results for the validation case ***,the infuence of the greening measures in the courtyard of the residential block on the air temperature is found to be ***,it was observed that due to locally higher radiation density,lower air velocities and higher air humidity,the apparent temperature in the courtyard is sometimes perceived to be higher than in the adjacent streets,despite the lower air ***:Simplifying the modeling process of the uhiSolver software by reducing the model complexity helps to reduce

β-defensins are components of host defense, with antimicrobial and pleiotropic immuno-modulatory properties. Research over the last 15 years has demonstrated abundant expression of a variety of β-defensins in the postnatal epididymis of different species. A gradient of region- and cell-specific expression of these proteins is observed in the epithelium of the postnatal epididymis. Their secretion into the luminal fluid and binding to spermatozoa as they travel along the epididymis has suggested their involvement in reproduction-specific tasks. Therefore, continuous attention has been given to various β-defensins for their role in sperm function and fertility. Although β-defensins are largely dependent on androgens, the underlying mechanisms regulating their expression and function in the epididymis are not well understood. Recent investigation has pointed out to a new and interesting scenario where β-defensins emerge with a different expression pattern in the Wolffian duct, the embryonic precursor of the epididymis, as opposed to the adult epididymis, thereby redefining the concept concerning the multifunctional roles of β-defensins in the developing epididymis. In this review, we summarize some current views of β-defensins in the epididymis highlighting our most recent data and speculations on their role in the developing epididymis during the prenatal-to-postnatal transition, bringing attention to the many unanswered questions in this research area that may contribute to a better understanding of epididymal biology and male fertility.

Determination of selected semi-volatile organic compounds in water using automated online solid-phase extraction with large-volume injection/gas chromatography/mass spectrometry

A rapid,sensitive,and cost-effective analyticalmethod was developed for the analysis of selected semivolatileorganic compounds in *** method used anautomated online solid-phase extraction technique coupledwith programmed-temperature vaporization large-volumeinjection gas chromatography/mass *** samples were extracted by using a fully automatedmobile rack system based on x-y-z robotic techniquesusing syringes and disposable 96-well extraction *** method was validated for the analysis of 30 semivolatileanalytes in drinking water,groundwater,andsurface *** a sample volume of 10 ml,the linearcalibrations ranged from 0.01 or 0.05 to 2.5μg·l^(-1),and themethod detection limits were less than 0.1μg·l^(-1).For thereagent water samples fortified at 1.0μg·l^(-1)and2.0μg·l^(-1),the obtained mean absolute recoveries were70%-130%with relative standard deviations of less than20%for most *** the drinking water,groundwater,and surface water samples fortified at 1.0μg·l^(-1),theobtained mean absolute recoveries were 50%-130%withrelative standard deviations of less than 20%for *** new method demonstrated three advantages:1)no manipulation except the fortification of surrogatestandards prior to extraction;2)significant cost reductionassociated with sample collection,shipping,storage,andpreparation;and 3)reduced exposure to hazardous solventsand other *** a result,this new automatedmethod can be used as an effective approach for screeningand/or compliance monitoring of selected semi-volatileorganic compounds in water.

The deployment of hydrogen as an energy carrier is found to be a vital alternative fuel for the future. It is expected that water electrolysis, powered by renewable energy sources, be able to scale-up hydrogen production. However, the reaction kinetic of oxygen evolution reaction(OER) is a sluggish process, which predominantly limits the efficiency of water electrolysis. This review recapitulates the recent progress and efforts made in the design and development of two selected earth-abundant bimetallic electrocatalysts(Ni Co and Co Fe) for alkaline OER. Each bimetal electrocatalyst is thoroughly outlined and discussed in five sub-sections, including bimetal(oxy) hydroxides, layered double hydroxides(lDHs) structures,oxides, composites, alloy and nanostructured electrocatalysts, and assembled with ***, a brief introduction to an in situ/operando characterization techniques and advantages for monitoring the structure of the electrocatalysts is provided. Finally, a summary outlining the challenges and conceivable approaches to advance OER performance is highlighted and discussed.

rates of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFlD) are increasing worldwide in tandem with the metabolic syndrome, with the progressive form of disease, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH) likely to become the most common cause of end stage liver disease in the not too distant future. lifestyle modification and weight loss remain the main focus of management in NAFlD and NASH, however, there has been growing interest in the benefit of specific foods and dietary components on disease progression, with some foods showing protective properties. This article provides an overview of the foods that show the most promise and their potential benefits in NAFlD/NASH, specifically; oily fish/fish oil, coffee, nuts, tea, red wine, avocado and olive oil. Furthermore, it summarises results from animal and human trials and highlights potential areas for future research.
