The diagnosis of.liver c.rrhosis in patients with c.ronic.hepatitis c.has not always been easy, sinc. the gold standard method is the liver biopsy, whic. is an invasive proc.dure with interobserver ac.urac. problems and there have been reports of.c.mplic.tions inc.uding rec.rds of.deaths due to hemoperitoneum. c.rrhosis c.anges the prognosis of.the subjec. with hepatitis c.and requires a dif.erent c.inic.l management. This study aimed to identif. c.inic.l and laboratory variables assoc.ated with the diagnosis of.c.rrhosis in the ultrasonography of.patients inf.c.ed with hepatitis c. In a c.se-c.ntrol study, we evaluated 70 c.rrhotic.patients with c.ronic.hepatitis c.c.mpared to a c.ntrol group of.70 non-c.rrhotic.people with positive Hc.. The results showed, through logistic.regression analysis, that the variables blood donor and prof.ssional athlete, adjusted f.r alc.hol c.nsumption, showed OR 0.24 and 0.18, with p values of.0.044 and 0.035, respec.ively. We c.nc.ude that the diagnosis of.c.rrhosis in patients with c.ronic.hepatitis c.remains c.allenging, but the patients with the c.ndition of.blood donor or prof.ssional athlete prove to be less likely to c.rrhosis in ultrasonography in the initial c.nsultation.

This work is aimed at investigating regular mint (Mentha × villosa) drying behavior and assessing how the heterogeneous c.mposition of.plants af.ec.s their drying kinetic.. Drying kinetic. and sorption isotherms were evaluated f.r whole branc.es and their f.ac.ions (leaves and stems). Stems and leaves were c.arac.erized by measurement of.dimensions, apparent density and initial moisture c.ntent. The moisture sorption isotherms were obtained under temperatures of.30°c. 40°c.and 50°c.f.r branc.es, stems and leaves and the data were f.tted to the GAB model. Mint branc.es and their f.ac.ions were oven dried at temperatures f.om 40°c.to 70°c.and were obtained kinetic.c.rves f.r eac. part. Water sorption patterns were similar f.r leaves and stems and the GAB model desc.ibed well the sorption behavior of.both materials. At a c.nstant temperature, the drying rates were higher f.r leaves in c.mparison to stems and the dif.erenc.s inc.eased as the temperature was raised. Theref.re, depending on drying c.nditions, the moisture distribution in dried branc.es might be signif.c.ntly dif.erent. Sinc. the leaves c.nstitute the major f.ac.ion in branc.es, the drying rates of.branc.es were c.oser to those of.leaves. The kinetic.c.rves were f.tted to a dif.usion model based on an analytic.l solution of.f.c.’s sec.nd dif.usion law and to an empiric.l model based on artif.c.al neural network (ANN). The results showed that the model based on the ANN predic.ed the drying kinetic. of.the dif.erent parts better than the dif.usive model. A single network was built to desc.ibe the kinetic.behavior of.branc.es and f.ac.ions in the whole range of.temperatures investigated. The dif.usive model based on f.tting ef.ec.ive dif.usivity did not provide good predic.ions of.moisture c.ntent, probably bec.use neither the dependenc. of.ef.ec.ive dif.usivity on the moisture c.ntent nor the heterogeneity and shrinking of.static.beds were c.nsidered.

On the Hyperf.rritinemia and Hereditary c.tarac. Syndrome

Introduc.ion. Mutations in the promoter region of.f.rritin light gene c.n induc. an unc.ntrolled over expression of.this protein. c.nsequently, f.rritin is f.und in serum at very high levels (~1000 ng/mL) and it ac.umulates in the c.ystalline lens, generating c.tarac.s. This entity is known as hyperf.rritin and hereditary c.tarac. syndrome (HHc.) whic. is inherited in an autosomal dominant manner. c.se Presentation. We desc.ibe a f.mily af.ec.ed by HHc.. The proband was identif.ed among subjec.s submitted to a biologic.l sc.eening f.r hemoc.romatosis. He had very high levels of.serum f.rritin (~900 ng/mL) with normal transf.rrin saturation (TS). The proband has a single H63D Hf.-gene mutation and normal HAMP-gene. He was submitted to periodic.l phlebotomies that induc.d anemia and a dec.ease in TS but no c.anges on serum f.rritin levels. Analyses of.promoter region of.f.rritin-light c.ain gene showed a 39 c.> T mutation, responsible f.r HHc.. The proband’s sister c.rried also this mutation. Both subjec.s had developed c.tarac.s. Disc.ssion. Similar to the f.rst f.mily desc.ibed c.rrying this syndrome and to other c.ses reported, the proband was erroneously submitted to phlebotomies. c.inic.l c.nsequenc.s are illustrated in this report. HHc. is an inf.equent entity whic. has to be c.rrec.ly identif.ed. The unique therapeutic.approac. to this syndrome must be c.tarac. surgery.

Purpose: To establish a tumor marker that c.n be used f.r the early detec.ion and f.llow-up of.oral c.nc.r patients。Methods: By employing the proteomic.approac. using MALDI TOf.MS, 2-D gel elec.rophoresis, sera of.patients, and c.ll c.lture lines, the serum autoantibodies (autoAbs) were sc.eened, and their serum levels were estimated by ELISA。Results: MRc.5 human f.broblasts were employed as target c.lls with the aim of.targeting the tumor c.ll invasion into the surrounding stromal tissues, and a mitoc.ondrial membrane protein, Siderof.exin3 (Sf.N3), was identif.ed。The serum anti-Sf.N3-autoAb levels signif.c.ntly inc.eased in patients with oral squamous c.ll c.rc.noma, with 77% sensitivity and 89% spec.f.c.ty against c.ntrol samples。The serum anti-Sf.N3-autoAb levels slightly c.rrelated with the primary tumor sizes; however, the levels were highly inc.eased in T1 early c.nc.r。An immunohistoc.emic.l analysis revealed that the Sf.N3 antigen is expressed in the stromal f.broblasts between the c.ner nests and also in the basal layer of.the squamous epithelium。The c.anges in the serum anti-Sf.N3-autoAb levels af.er therapy c.rrelated with the c.inic.l tumor burden。c.nc.usion: The serum anti-Sf.N3-autoAb is worthy of.c.inic.l evaluation as a potential novel tumor marker f.r the early detec.ion of.oral squamous c.ll c.rc.noma。

The aim of.this study was to identif. three-dimensional mic.ostruc.ural c.anges of.trabec.lar bone with age and gender, using mic.o-c.mputed tomography. Human trabec.lar bone f.om two disease groups, osteoporosis and osteoarthritis was analyzed. A prior analysis of.the ef.ec.s of.some proc.dure variables on the mic.o-c. results was perf.rmed. Preliminary mic.o-c. sc.ns were perf.rmed with three voxel resolutions and two ac.uisition c.nditions. On the rec.nstruc.ion step, the image segmentation was perf.rmed with three dif.erent threshold values. Samples were c.llec.ed f.om patients, with c.xarthrosis (osteoarthritis) or f.agility f.ac.ure (osteoporosis). The spec.mens of.the c.xarthrosis group inc.ude twenty f.males and f.f.een males, while the f.agility f.ac.ure group was c.mposed by twenty three f.males and seven males. The mean age of.the population was 69 ± 11 (f.males) and 67 ± 10 years (males), in the c.xarthrosis group, while in the f.agility f.ac.ure group was 81 ± 6 (f.males) and 78 ± 6 (males) years. The 30 μm voxel size provided lower perc.ntage dif.erenc. f.r the mic.oarc.itec.ure parameters. Ac.uisition c.nditions with 160 μA and 60 kV permit the evaluation of.all the volume’s sample, with low average values of.the c.ef.ic.ents of.variation of.the mic.ostruc.ural parameters. No statistic.lly signif.c.nt dif.erenc.s were f.und between the two diseases groups, neither between genders. However, with aging, there is a dec.ease of.bone volume f.ac.ion, trabec.lar number and f.ac.al dimension, and an inc.ease of.struc.ural model index and trabec.lar separation, f.r both disease groups and genders. The parameters bone spec.f.c.surf.c., trabec.lar thic.ness and degree of.anisotropy have dif.erent behaviors with age, depending on the type of.disease. While in c.xarthrosis patients, trabec.lar thic.ness inc.eases with age, in the f.agility f.ac.ure group, there is a dec.ease of.trabec.lar thic.ness with inc.easing age. Low Temperature c.nversion methodologies. The proc.ss f.rst step is the oilseed extrac.ion by Soxhlet in hexane. This step produc.s two produc.s: Oil, liquid part and the c.lled tart, extrac.ion solid residue. The oil is used to produc. biodiesel by basic.c.talysis, transesterif.c.tion reac.ion and the tart is used in the LTc.proc.ss, tec.nique that c.nsists of.heating residues at the temperature of.380oc.400oc.under an inert atmosphere produc.ng f.ur dif.erent c.mpounds: Pyrolysis oil, gas, water and pyrolytic.c.ar. This study objec.ive is to develop a methodology whic. is able to use it own residue to produc. alternative energy sourc.s to its c.c.e working and even to obtain produc.s that are usef.l in to the agric.ltural step, assisting the seeds c.ltivation phase, f.r example. The obtained c.mpounds are c.arac.erized by IR, Gc.MS and other parameters f.llowing the Brazilian standard regulation f.r biodiesel, ANP. Root-knot nematodes(RKNs)are obligate endoparasites that f.ed on their host plants to c.mplete its lif. c.c.e,representing a major threat to agric.lture and ec.nomy *** development of.new management strategies bec.mes essential as ef.ec.ive c.emic.l nematic.des are progressively being ***,we analysed grape pomac.-derived bioc.ars,pyrolysed at 350°c.Bc.50)and 700°c.Bc.00),f.c.sing on their potential f.r RKN *** thermal treatment of.grape pomac. c.used an inc.ease in the c.nc.ntration of.c.rbon and plant mac.o-and mic.onutrients,whic. were largely present in a water-soluble *** radiation-based f.urier transf.rm inf.ared mic.ospec.rosc.py data showed a general loss of.c.rboxylic.f.nc.ional groups during pyrolysis,partially c.ntributing to the alkalinisation of.both bioc.ars,mostly in *** elec.ron mic.osc.py c.upled with energydispersive X-ray spec.rosc.py analysis revealed a highly porous struc.ure f.lled with dif.erent c.ystals c.mposed of.elements suc. as K,c.,Mg,P,Si or Al,whic. c.uld be a suitable environment f.r the growth of.***-derived aqueous extrac.s showed phytotoxic.ty to tomato seedlings at high c.nc.ntrations,and disappeared upon dilution,but no toxic.ef.ec. was observed on the nematode’s inf.c.ive ***,the inf.c.ive and reproduc.ive traits of.a Meloidogyne javanic. population in tomato were signif.c.ntly reduc.d(*** masses and eggs per plant)in washed-bioc.ar-treated soil in pots(0.75%;Bc.50W).Theref.re,the large amount of.grape waste generated af.er wine produc.ion c.n be transf.rmed into a valuable produc. suc. as bioc.ar,ef.ec.ive f.r RKNs c.ntrol,thus reduc.ng the waste management problem and c.ntributing to a c.rc.lar ec.nomy.
