Xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis(XGC) is an uncommon variant of chronic cholecystitis. The perioperative findings in aggressive cases may be indistinguishable from those of gallbladder or biliary tract carcinomas. Three patients presented mass lesions that infiltrated the hepatic hilum,provoked biliary dilatation and jaundice,and were indicative of malignancy. Surgical excision was performed following oncological principles and included extirpation of the gallbladder,extrahepatic bile duct,and hilar lymph nodes,as well as partial hepatectomy. Postoperative morbidity was minimal. Surgical pathology demonstrated XGC and absence of malignancy in all three cases. All three patients are alive and well after years of follow-up. XGC may have such an aggressive presentation that carcinoma may only be ruled out on surgical pathology. In such cases,the best option may be radical resection following oncological principles performed by expert surgeons,in order that postoperative complications may be minimized if not avoided altogether.

Dear Editor,Seed germination is a major developmental transition in a plant＇s life that involves the concerted action of several genetic and physiological pathways （Holdsworth et al., 2008）, and mostly consists of the resumption of embryo growth after a long quiescence imposed during seed maturation. In mature seeds, germination is repressed by abscisic acid （ABA）, while favorable environmental conditions promote gibberellin （GA） biosynthesis and decrease ABA （Holdsworth et al., 2008）. The increase in GA levels is essential for the rupture of testa and endosperm （Lee et al., 2002）. The activation of cell division in the embryo is an integral part of germination that precedes the protrusion of the root through the seed coat. In Arabidopsis, this activation has been linked to significant early changes in the expression of cell-cycle elements （Masubelele et al., 2005）. In the root apical meristem （RAM）, GAs regulate cell divisions （Achard et al., 2009; 0beda-Tomás et al., 2009）. Similarly, the transcription factors （TFs） TEOSINTE BRANCHED1/ CYCLOIDEA/PROLIFERATING CELL FACTOR14 （TCP14） and TCP15 have been proposed to regulate cell proliferation （Kieffer et al., 2011）. Moreover, the activity of TCP14 is necessary to undergo seed germination and, remarkably, seeds lacking this activity are hypersensitive to the negative effects on germination of GA biosynthesis inhibitor paclobutrazol, suggesting a functional relationship between this TF and GAs （Tatematsu et al., 2008）. Taking these observations into account, we hypothesized that TCP14 and TCP15 mediate GA-dependent activation of the cell cycle during germination.

The paper describes a method for measuring the thermal diffusivity of materials having a high thermal conductivity. The apparatus is rather simple and low-cost, being therefore suitable in a laboratory for undergraduate students of engineering schools, where several set-ups are often required. A recurrence numerical approach solves the thermal field in the specimen, which is depending on the thermal diffusivity of its material. The numerical method requires the temperature data from two different positions in the specimen, measured by two thermocouples connected to a temperature logger.

The rapid development of additive manufacturing and advances in shape memory materials have fueled the progress of four-dimensional （4D） printing. With the right external stimulus, the need for human interaction, sensors, and batteries will be eliminated, and by using additive manufacturing, more complex devices and parts can be produced. With the current understanding of shape memory mechanisms and with improved design for additive manufacturing, reversibility in 4D printing has recently been proven to be feasible. Conventional one-way 4D printing requires human interaction in the programming （or shapesetting） phase, but reversible 4D printing, or two-way 4D printing, will fully eliminate the need for human interference, as the programming stage is replaced with another stimulus. This allows reversible 4D printed parts to be fully dependent on external stimuli; parts can also be potentially reused after every recovery, or even used in continuous cycles-an aspect that carries industrial appeal. This paper presents a review on the mechanisms of shape memory materials that have led to 4D printing, current findings regarding 4D printing in alloys and polymers, and their respective limitations. The reversibility of shape memory materials and their feasibility to be fabricated using three-dimensional （3D） printing are summarized and critically analyzed. For reversible 4D printing, the methods of 3D printing, mechanisms used for actuation, and strategies to achieve reversibility are also highlighted. Finally, prospective future research directions in reversible 4D printing are suggested.

AIM: To investigate the short and long term corneal biomechanical changes after overnight orthokeratology(OK) and compare them with those occurring in subjects not wearing contact ***: Retrospective case control study enrolling 54 subjects that were divided into three groups 18 subjects each: control group(CG), short term(15 nights) OK(STOK) group, and long term(more than 1 y of OK wear) OK(LTOK) group. Corneal biomechanics were characterized using the Cor Vis? ST system(Oculus), recording parameters such as time [first/second applanation time(AT1, AT2)], speed [velocity of corneal apex at the first/second applanation time(AV1, AV2)], and amplitude of deformation(AD1, AD2) in the first and second corneal flattening, corneal stiffness(SPA1), biomechanically corrected intraocular pressure(b IOP) and corneal(CBI) and tomographic biomechanical indices(TBI).RESULTS: Significantly lower AD1 and standard deviate on of Ambrosio’s relational average thickness related to the horizontal profile(ARTh) values were found in the OK groups compared to CG(P<0.05). Likewise, significantly higher values of CBI were found in STOK and LTOK groups compared to CG(P<0.01). No significant differences between groups were found in integrated radius index(P=0.24), strain stress index(P=0.22), tomographic biomechanical index(P=0.91) and corneal stif fness parameter(SPA1, P=0.97). Significant inverse correlations were found between corneal thickness and CBI in STOK(r=-0.90, P<0.01) and LTOK groups(r=-0.71, P<0.01).CONCLUSION: OK does not seem to alter significantly the corneal biomechanical properties, but special care should be taken when analyzing biomechanical parameters influenced by corneal thickness such as amplitude of deformation, ARTh or CBI, because they change significantly after treatment but mainly due to the reduction and pachymetric progression induced by the corneal molding secondary to OK treatment.

Rangefinders are instruments used for ballistics and for surveying in general. Here we propose a discussion of some of them, ranging from the ancient Rome to the modern methods. Using an ancient roman artefact as a model, we can prepare a rangefinder at no cost for teaching surveying methods to students of engineering and military schools.

A simple model shows how it is possible to create a gap in the vibrational spectrum of a one-dimensional lattice. The proposed model is a host-guest chain having, instead of point-like masses connected by spring, massive cages hosting particles inside. We imagine the cage as a rigid box containing a mass linked by a spring to the box inner wall. The presence of guests creates an energy gap in the dispersion of vibrational frequencies. The gap is about the internal resonance of the mass hidden in the cage. The model is proposed to help understanding the macroscopic behaviour of some phononic materials and the properties of materials with microscopic rattling modes.

BACKGROUND The relationship between hyperkalaemia and metabolic acidosis is well described in the critical care setting;however,the relationship between acute respiratory acidosis and plasma potassium concentration is less well *** a controlled model of increasing levels of hypercarbia,we tested the hypothesis of whether increasing levels of hypercarbia are associated with changes in plasma potassium *** To determine whether increasing levels of hypercarbia are associated with changes in plasma potassium *** We performed a post-hoc study examining changes in serum potassium in 24 patients who received increased levels of hypercarbia during cardiac *** blood gases and plasma concentrations of potassium were measured at baseline,3 min prior to,and then every 3 min for 15 min during the intervention of *** primary endpoint was the absolute change in serum K+at 15 min compared to the baseline K+*** following secondary endpoints were evaluated:(1)The association between CO2 and serum K+concentration;and(2)The correlation between plasma pH and serum K+*** During the intervention,PaCO2 increased from 43.6 mmHg(95%CI:40.1 to 47.1)at pre-intervention to 83.9 mmHg(95%CI:78.0 to 89.8)at 15 min after intervention;P<*** mean(SD)serum potassium increased from 4.16(0.35)mmol/L at baseline to 4.28(0.33)mmol/L at 15 min(effect size 0.09 mol/L;P=0.22).There was no significant correlation between PaCO2 and potassium(Pearson’s coefficient 0.06;95%CI:-0.09 to 0.21)or between pH and potassium(Pearson’s coefficient-0.07;95%CI:-0.22 to 0.09).CONCLUSION Acute hypercarbia and subsequent respiratory acidaemia were not associated with hyperkalaemia in patients undergoing major surgery.

BACKGROUND Previous research suggests that parents raising a child with autism experience higher levels of psychological distress than parents of typically developing children and parents of children with other developmental disorders. Little is known, however, about the intersection between the effects of socioeconomic status(SES) on the wellbeing and sense of parental competency of parents of preschoolers with autism and how it relates to child symptom *** To examine the relationship between their child's symptom severity, SES, as measured by neighbourhood advantage and occupational status, on the psychological wellbeing and perceived parenting competence among parents of preschoolers with *** Parents of 117 preschool-aged children with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder(ASD), 107 mothers and 54 fathers, completed questionnaires about their child's symptoms of ASD and functioning, their own perceptions of their wellbeing and parental competence on entry to an early intervention program in Sydney, Australia. Parents also provided demographic information pertaining to their occupation, level of education attained and address(postcode). All children were also assessed for their severity of symptoms using the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule.
