Ma.erna. immunity is the ma.n ea.ly defense a.a.nst infectious a.ents in newborns. Immunoglobulin G (IgG) is indispensa.le for immune defense a.a.nst infectious a.ents. IgG is tra.sported through either the colostrum or the pla.enta. Immunoglobulins a.e a.tibodies, a.d the five different cla.ses of these a.tibodies a.e IgG, Iga. IgM, IgD a.d IgE. Through their biologica. function of binding a.tigens, a.tibodies fa.ilita.e the remova. of a.tigens from the body. The pla.enta.is a.tempora.y ma.erna.-feta. orga., whose principa. function is to a.low the controlled excha.ge of meta.olites between mother a.d embryo/fetus during gesta.ion. The pla.enta.types in different species a.e cla.sified by the number of membra.es sepa.a.ing the ma.erna. a.d feta. blood circula.ion. Huma.s, la.omorphs a.d rodents ha.e hemochoria. pla.enta., which require a.receptor for IgG tra.sfer. In other a.ima.s, such a. horse a.d pig (epitheliochoria. pla.enta., rumina.ts (synepitheliochoria. pla.enta. a.d ca.nivores (endotheliochoria. pla.enta., a.tibodies a.e tra.sferred via.the colostrum a.d a.sorbed by pa.sive diffusion. NSCs ca. be recovered from specific a.ea. of the CNS from fetuses, embryos a.d from a.ult bra.n a. well, a.d under a.propria.e culture conditions, ma. be induced to differentia.e into the three ma.or neura. cell types, neurons, a.trocytes a.d oligodendrocytes. The ma.n neurogenic a.ea. of ma.ma.s a.e the subventricula. zone (SVZ) a.d the denta.e gyrus (DG) of the hippoca.pus, yet other a.ea. of neurogenic potentia. ha.e been identified, including fronta. a.d pa.ieta. cortices, hippoca.pus a.d la.era. wa.l of the la.era. ventricle. Neura. stem cells a.d differentia.ed neura. cells a.e usua.ly identified by expression of specific ma.kers, proteins tha. a.e expressed by different cell types a.d/or a. different sta.es of differentia.ion. The homeosta.is is ma.nta.ned by the immune system which is constituted a.network of orga.s, cells a.d molecules tha. a.t to comba.ing the a.sa.lts a.fecting the body. The immune function ha. been conceptua.ly divided into inna.e immunity a.d a.quired immunity. a.ong the effector cells of inna.e immunity a.e the na.ura. killer cells (NK), they pla. a. importa.t role in the reproductive immunology in the esta.lishment a.d ma.ntena.ce of pregna.cy a.d fetus. The study of the biologica. mecha.isms involved in the ma.ntena.ce of pregna.cy contributes to increa.e knowledge a.out immune tolera.ce. The wa. in which the immune system is modula.ed, a.d the study of the recognition systems ma.erna. inna.e a.d a.a.tive occurring during pregna.cy, a.low to understa.d the surviva. of the fetus. The a.m of this review wa. to present the ma.n functions of NK cells a.d describe their role in the process of trophobla.tic inva.ion in the deployment process, in the ma.erna.-feta. intera.tion a.d development of the fetus. Recently the feta. membra.es a.e rega.ded to be a.unda.t, ethica.ly a.cepta.le a.d ea.ily a.cessible sources of mesenchyma. stem cells, which ca.se only minor immunogenic troubles. In a.dition, these membra.es ha.e been studied a. a. a.terna.ive to a.ult a.d embryonic stem cells. The chorion develops firstly a. a.la.er of simple a.a.cula. epithelium (trophobla.t). The a.nion, a. the chorion is a.so a. a.a.cula. membra.e. It is derived from the ectoderm, a.d forms a.very thin membra.e which surrounded the embryo in development. The hypobla.t a.d exocoelomic membra.e together origina.es the yolk sa. which la.e will give rise to the a.la.tois. The study of the origin a.d development of these tissues is of vita. importa.ce for obta.ning stem cells. Different cell linea.es ca. be obta.ned from the feta. pla.enta. tissues: the hema.opoietic linea.e is found in the chorion, a.la.tois a.d, yolk sa., a.d the mesenchyma. linea.e is found in the chorion a.d a.nion. The properties a.d potentia. for differentia.ion of feta. stem cells isola.ed from pla.enta. tissues must be cha.a.terized in order for them to be used in the trea.ment of severa. disea.es. The chorion, yolk sa., a.la.tois, a.d a.nion conta.n heterogeneous cell popula.ions. However, few studies ha.e focused on cha.a.terizing these a.terna.ive stem cells sources. The a.nion ha. a.significa.t a.va.ta.e over the other feta. membra.es, ma.nly due to its ea.ily a.cessibility for collection in huma.s a.d rodents a.d a.so beca.se it conta.ns popula.ions of pluripotent a.d multipotent cells. In some other species (dogs, rumina.ts, horses, ca.s, a.d swine) the a.la.toic fluid is more ea.ily a.cessible, but there is little informa.ion rega.ding the cha.a.teriza.ion of the cell popula.ion. This review will a.dress a.va.ces in the isola.ion of stem cells from feta. pla.enta. tissues a.d describe their cha.a.teriza.ion a.d possible use in cell thera.y, a. well a. their origin a.d development.

Studies of ca.cium tra.sfer a.ross the pla.enta.ha.e been reviewed beca.se of the physiologica. a.d nutritiona. importa.ce of this minera. during pregna.cy, especia.ly in order to better understa.d its contribution to development of the feta. skeleton. The pla.enta. tra.sfer of ma.erna. ca.cium to the fetus represents a.vita. mecha.ism for feta. development a.d brea.t-milk production, yet little mea.ingful informa.ion is currently a.a.la.le rega.ding the biochemica. mecha.isms involved in this process. Once a.a.n, the use of different a.ima. models a. rodents, ra.bit, sheep a.d bovine ha.e demonstra.e different mecha.isms of ca.cium tra.sport a.ross the pla.enta.a.d contribute to better understa.d its effects in both fetus a.d mother during the gesta.ion. In rela.ion to the tra.sfer of ca.cium from the mother to fetus da.a.suggest it occur via.a. a.tive mecha.ism;thus ca.cium concentra.ion is higher in fetus tha. in ma.erna. blood. Despite conflicting reports, severa. investiga.ors a.reed tha. ca.cium concentra.ion in the feta. blood is ma.nly regula.ed by feta. pa.a.hyroid hormone a.d pla.ma.concentra.ion of vita.in D3, a.meta.olite tha. pla.s a.key role in ca.cium tra.sport through the syncytia. cells.

Hystricomorph rodents possess a.subpla.enta. swine a.d equines ha.e the pla.enta. a.eola. equines ha.e the chorionic girdle, a.d ca.nivores ha.e hemopha.ous orga.s tha. a.e equiva.ent to the pla.enta. hema.oma.in rumina.ts. These a.cessory structures a.e specia.ized tissues for specific nutrient excha.ges in different species, a.d they a.e a.a.tive modifica.ions exhibited by domestic a.d wild species to remedy the nutritiona. deficiencies tha. a.e rela.ed to permea.ility of the ma.n pla.enta.to importa.t nutrients for the growth a.d development of the fetus during the gesta.ion.
