Peripancreatic paraganglioma:Lesson from a round table

We described the case of a peripancreatic paraganglioma(PGL)misdiagnosed as pancreatic *** exploration revealed an unremarkable pancreas and a large well-defined cystic mass originating at the mesocolon *** enucleation of the mass was performed,preserving the pancreatic ***,a diagnosis of PGL was ***,two previously unreported mutations,one affecting the KDR gene in exon 7 and another on the JAK3 gene in exon 4 were *** mutations are known to be *** and cytologic findings were blindly reviewed by an expert panel of clinicians,radiologists,and pathologists to identify possible causes of the *** major issue was lack of evidence of a cleavage plane from the pancreas at imaging,which prompted radiologists to establish an intraparenchymal *** blinded revision shifted the diagnosis towards an extrapancreatic lesion,as the pancreatic parenchyma showed no structural alterations and no dislocation of the Wirsung *** post,the identified biases were the emergency setting of the radiologic examination and the very thin mesocolon sheet,which hindered clear definition of the lesion *** endoscopic ultrasonography diagnosis was confirmed,emphasizing the intrinsic limit of this technique in detecting large ***,pathologic review favored a diagnosis of PGL due to the morphological features and immonohistochemical *** months after tumor excision,the patient is asymptomatic with no disease relapse evident by either radiology or laboratory *** report strongly highlights the difficulties in rendering an accurate preoperative diagnosis of PGL.

Regression of liver metastases of occult carcinoid tumor with slow release Lanreotide therapy

Few clinical studies have demonstrated an anti-proliferative activity of somatostatin (SST) analogs in carcinoids. We report the case of a woman with liver metastases of neuroendocrine tumor and no evidence of the primary tumor. The liver metastases were characterized by high proliferation index, immunoreactiviy for somatostatin receptor (SSTR)-l, 2, 3 and 5 and positive octreoscan. Urinary 5-hydroxyindolacetic acid, serum serotonin and chromogranin A were elevated. Slow release lanreotide (SR-LAN) therapy for 3 mo controlled clinical and biochemical signs of carcinoid tumor and caused a clear-cut reduction in the diameter of two liver metastases and disappearance of another lesion, with further reduction after 6 and 18 mo. We demonstrated a clear-cut long-lasting anti-proliferative effect of SR-LAN on liver metastases of occult carcinoid with high proliferation index and immunoreactivity for SSTR-1, 2, 3, and 5. Immunohistochemistry for SSTRs could be a suitable method for the selection of patients with metastatic carcinoid that may benefit from SST analog therapy.

The development of ultrasound contrast agents with excellent tolerance and safety profiles has notably improved liver evaluation with ultrasound(US)for several applications,especially for the detection of *** particular,contrast enhanced ultrasonography(CEUS)allows the display of the parenchymal microvasculature,enabling the study and visualization of the enhancement patterns of liver lesions in real time and in a continuous manner in all vascular phases,which is similar to contrast-enhanced computed tomography(CT)and contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance *** studies have reported that the use of a contrast agent enables the visualization of more metastases with significantly improved sensitivity and specificity compared to ***,studies have shown that CEUS yields sensitivities comparable to *** this review,we describe the state of the art of CEUS for detecting colorectal liver metastases,the imaging features,the literature reports of metastases in CEUS as well as its technique,its clinical role and its potential ***,the updated international consensus panel guidelines are reported in this review with the inherent limitations of this technique and best practice experiences.

Green and Sustainable Software has emerged as a new and highly active area in the software *** several years of research and work,we believe that it is now necessary to obtain a general snapshot of how the research in this area is *** do so,we have applied the 5 Ws(why,when,who,where,and what),a formula for getting the complete story on a *** have therefore carried out a study,using 542 publications related to Green and Sustainable Software research;these were recovered using *** results obtained allow us to conclude that it is important to identify key elements of the research to allow researchers be fully aware of the state of the research on Green and Sustainable Software(why);the study uses papers published between 2000 and the beginning of November 2018(when);the most prolific authors are mainly from Europe,although the USA is the most active country,Green and Sustainable Software being a very interactive area with a good number of multinational publications(who);the top five keywords related to sustainable aspects are Green Software,Green IT,Software Sustainability,Energy Consumption,and Energy Efficiency(what);finally,as regards the places authors prefer to publish in,there is almost a complete balance between conferences and journals,with a trend towards an increase in the number of publications(where).

Killer cell immtmoglobulin-like recep- tors （KIRs） are transmembraneglycoproteins expressed by natural killer cells and subsets of T cells. The KIR genes are polymorphic, highly homolo- gous and found in a duster on chromo- some 19q13.4 within the 1 Mb leukocyte receptor complex. The gene content of the KIR gene cluster varies among haplotypes, although several frame- work genes are found in all haplotypes （including KIR3DL3, KIR3DP1, KIR2DL4 and KIR3DL2）. In spite of the extended diversity of the KIR genomic region, these four framework loci are nearly ubiquitous in the population, and the pseudogene （KIR3DPI） is not expressed.1

Recently,the term theragenerative has been proposed for biomaterials capable of inducing therapeutic approaches followed by repairing/regenerating the tissue/*** study is focused on the design of a new theragenerative nanocomposite composed of an amphiphilic non-ionic surfactant(Pluronic F127),bioactive glass(BG),and black phosphorus(BP).The nanocomposite was prepared through a two-step synthetic strategy,including a microwave treatment that turned BP nanosheets(BPNS)into quantum dots(BPQDs)with 5±2 nm dimensions in *** effects of surfactant and microwave treatment were assessed in vitro:the surfactant distributes the ions homogenously throughout the composite and the microwave treatment chemically stabilizes the *** presence of BP enhanced bioactivity and promoted calcium phosphate formation in simulated body *** inherent anticancer activity of BP-containing nanocomposites was tested against osteosarcoma cells in vitro,finding that 150μg mL^(-1)was the lowest concentration which prevented the proliferation of SAOS-2 cells,while the counterpart without BP did not affect the cell growth ***,the apoptosis pathways were evaluated and a mechanism of action was *** irradiation was applied to induce further proliferation suppression on SAOS-2 cells through *** inhibitory effects of bare BP nanomaterials and nanocomposites on the migration and invasion of bone cancer,breast cancer,and prostate cancer cells were assessed in vitro to determine the anticancer potential of nanomaterials against primary and secondary bone *** regenerative behavior of the nanocomposites was tested with healthy osteoblasts and human mesenchymal stem cells;the BPQDs-incorporated nanocomposite significantly promoted the proliferation of osteoblast cells and induced the osteogenic differentiation of stem *** study introduces a new multifunctional theragenerative platform with promising potential for simultaneous bone cancer t

Supramolecular peptides exhibit obvious similarities with collagen fibers in terms of self-assembly characteristics,nanofibrous structure,and responsiveness to external ***,a series of supramolecular peptides were developed by altering the amino acid sequence,enabling the self-assembly of three types of 4-biphenylacetic acid(BPAA)-tripeptides into fibrous hydrogel through hydrogen bonding and n-n stacking under the influence of ion *** electron and scanning electron microscopies revealed that the diameter of the fiber within nanofibrous hydrogels was~10 and~40 nm,respectively,which was similar with the self-assembled collagen *** this reason,these hydrogels could be considered as a biomimetic extracellular ***,the gelation concentration induced by ions was even lower than 0.66 wt%,with an elastic modulus of~0.27 kPa,corresponding to a water content of 99.34 wt%.In addition,the three supramolecular hydrogels were found to be good substrates for L929 cell adhesion and MC-3T3 cell *** overall results implied that BPAA-based hydrogels have a lucrative application potential as cell carriers.

Optical Fiber Torsion Sensor with Mechanically Induced Long Period Fiber Gratings in Rare-Earth Doped Fibers

In this work wavelength sensitivity in mechanically induced long period fiber gratings (MLPFG) is analyzed. This analysis is first carried out both in standard single-mode fiber SMF-28 and in Er-doped fibers. The mechanical analysis for both types of fibers under different torsion conditions is presented. In order to apply the torsion one of the fiber ends is fixed while torsion is applied on the other end. A MLPFG whose period is 503 μm is used to press the fiber after torsion is applied. This allows for micro curvatures to be formed on the fiber, which in turn generates a periodical index perturbation on it. Here, it was noted that the sensitive wavelength shift of the rejection bands is bigger for Er-doped fibers. For a torsion of 6 turns applied to 10 cm of doped fiber the wavelength peaks can be moved up to 25 nm, which is longer to what was detected on standard fibers. Therefore, by using Er-doped fibers to monitor torsion on structures will give more sensitive and accurate results than using standard fibers. These results can be employed for sensing applications, especially for small to medium size structures, which can be mechanical, civil or aeronautics.
