Quality of Melon 'UFERSA-05 *** and Pele de Sapo“Mabel”Minimally Processed,Kept in Different Packages

This study aimed at evaluating the quality of melon Pele de Sapo “Mabel” and Yellow melon “UFERSA-05” minimally processed preserved in different packages. The fruits were harvested at Mossoró-RN and transported to Serra Talhada-PE. In the first study, melon fruit Piel de Sapo “Mabel” was selected, washed, weighed, cooled, peeled, cut into cube shape, sanitized in chlorine solution, drained, packaged in rigid polypropylene tray, sealed with polypropylene film or polypropylene rigid cap and kept for 8 days at 8℃. In the second study, fruits of yellow melon “UFERSA-05” and Pele de Sapo “Mabel” were minimally processed and kept in rigid polypropylene tray, sealed with polypropylene film and stored for 8 days at 8℃. There was no significant interaction between packaging (sealed with film and polypropylene cover) and period of conservation, for pH, total titratable acidity (TTA), total soluble solids (TSS) and Loss of fresh mass (LFM) for Melon “Mabel”. While there was significant interaction between types of melon (“UFERSA-05” and “Mabel”) and storage period (0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 days) for pH, TTA and TSS. In sensory evaluation were noticeable changes in appearance, flavor, aroma and flesh firmness, characterized by translucency, alcoholic aroma and softening in “Mabel” melon kept in tray with lid. Melon “UFERSA-05” showed lower pH, total soluble solids, total soluble sugars, PME activity, lack of translucency high flesh firmness compared to “Mabel” melon during storage. The high levels of sugars in melon “Mabel” may be related to the incidence of translucency, which was not observed in “UFERSA-05” melon, with a strong potential to minimal processing.

Vertical stratification of bat assemblages in flooded and unflooded Amazonian forests

Tropical rainforests usually have multiple strata that results in a vertical stratification of ecological opportunities foranimals. We investigated if this stratification influences the way bats use the vertical space in flooded and unflooded forests of theCentral Amazon. Using mist-nets set in the canopy (17 to 35 m high) and in the understorey (0 to 3 m high) we sampled four sitesin upland unflooded forests (terra firme), three in forests seasonally flooded by nutrient-rich water (varzea), and three in forestsseasonally flooded by nutrient-poor water (igapo). Using rarefaction curves we found that species richness in the understorey andcanopy were very similar. An ordination analysis clearly separated the bat assemblages of the canopy from those of the understorey inboth flooded and unflooded habitats. Gleaning carnivores were clearly associated with the understorey, whereas frugivores wereabundant in both strata. Of the frugivores, Carollinae and some Stenodermatinae were understorey specialists, but several Stenodermatinaemostly used the canopy. The first group mainly includes species that, in general, feed on fruits of understorey shrubs,whereas the second group feed on figs and other canopy fruits. We conclude that vertical stratification in bat communities occurseven within forests with lower canopy heights, such as Amazonian seasonally flooded forests, and that the vertical distribution ofbat species is closely related to their diet and foraging behaviour.

Chemical proﬁles of non-invasive biological material,such as feces,have great potential to study elusive animals or those with low population ***,we use a metabolomic approach to evaluate Neotropical mustelids as a biological model to describe the diversity of the metabolites present in fecal samples,as well as to evaluate the potential of chemical proﬁles for taxonomic *** collected fecal samples from captive individuals of 5 species of mustelids occurring in Brazil and analyzed them by liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass *** 200 compounds have been annotated;“bile acids,alcohols and derivatives”was the most expressive class in the metabolome of all the *** successfully discriminated 3 taxonomic groups:1—tayra(Eira barbara);2—otters(Lontra longicaudis and Pteronura brasiliensis;1);and 3—grisons(Galictis vittata and Galictis cuja).Several compounds seemed to be associated with food intake and the digestive process,while others were found for theﬁrst time in Neotropical *** concluded that mustelids show high metabolome diversity and that species-speciﬁc identiﬁcation through metabolomic proﬁles is possible,thus contributing to the development and implementation of additional non-invasive approaches in the study of mustelids.

Case report of a criminal dismemberment in Northeast Brazil

Several decomposed body parts were received for examination by the Forensic Anthropology section of the Medico-legal Institute of joão Pessoa,Paraíba,*** portions of the lower and upper limbs,ribs,vertebrae,and a skull were thoroughly *** biological profile indicated a male individual with an estimated age range between 23 and 57 years and a mean age of 35.2 years(SD=9.4;phase IV,Suchey-Brooks).The skeleton showed injuries caused by sharp force and sharp-blunt force trauma that affected all body ***,the lesions are mainly in the diaphyseal segments of the long bones,sacrum,pelvis,mandible,maxilla,scapulae,sternum,vertebrae,the distal epiphysis of the left fibula,and the distal epiphysis of the left tibia displayed characteristics compatible with injuries produced *** was not possible to determine the cause of *** resulted in a positive *** of common difficulties faced in forensic practice,it is often not possible for forensic anthropologists to go to the crime scene,X-ray or body scanners are frequently unavailable,and the victim’s medical and/or dental records are sometimes *** difficulties make identification ultimately depend on genetic analysis,which is more time-consuming than other identification *** this,bone fragment examination in dismemberment cases is a complex *** Anthropology can shed light on cases involving the identification of dismembered remains,which are challenging because of the number of traumatic injuries,as well as different injury patterns,on bones.

Native and exotic seed dispersal by the stone marten(Martes foina):implications for the regeneration of a relict climactic forest in central Portugal

The stone marten(Martes foina)is a carnivorous mammal that often consumes fleshy fruits,thus potentially promoting seed *** present study was developed in Bussaco National Forest,central Portugal,and aimed to assess the potential role of the stone marten in dispersing native and exotic plants in different forest landscape *** from stone marten scats and fleshy fruits were collected monthly and were thereafter identified and sowed in a nursery,following a randomized experimental *** emergence was monitored *** linear models were used to test for differences in time and success of emergence between seeds from scats and fruits of 3 native species(Rubus ulmifolius,Arbutus unedo and Celtis australis)and 1 exotic plant species with invasive behavior(Prunus laurocerasus).Fruit consumption by the stone martens significantly increased and accelerated the germination of the native *** but had no effect on the other 2 native species or on the invasive *** suggested that stone martens contribute to gene flow and forest regeneration by dispersing native plant ***,although the germination was not enhanced in the invasive species,the preference of stone martens for these fruits may potentially contribute to the proliferation of *** study represents a contribution to better understanding the fauna and flora interactions,enabling for a more conscious and effective decision-making in forest management.

It has been recognized that physical and chemical properties of biomaterial surfaces mediate the quality of extracellular matrix(ECM)that may affect cell *** nature,ECM is a heterogeneous three-dimensional superstructure formed by three major components,glycosaminoglycan,glycoconjugate,and protein,that anchors cellular compartments in tissues and regulates the function and the behavior of *** in the biointerface alter the quality of ECM and morphology through cell surface receptors,which,in turn,enable it to trigger specific cell signaling and different cellular *** fact,a number of strategies have been used to improve the functionality of surfaces and direct cell behavior through precisely designed ***,we aimed to discuss,through a science-based viewpoint,the biomaterial surface features on cell behavior and analyze the impact of cell physical modification on dental implant development.

Forest production and growth are obtained from statistical models that allow the generation of information at the tree or forest stand *** the use of regression models is common in forest measurement,there is a constant search for estimation procedures that provide greater ***,machine learning techniques have been used with satisfactory performance in measuring ***,methods such as Adaptive NeuroFuzzy Inference System(ANFIS)and Random Forest are relatively poorly studied for predicting the volume of wood in eucalyptus plantations in ***,it is essential to check whether these techniques can provide gains in terms of ***,this study aimed to evaluate the use of Random Forest and ANFIS techniques in the prognosis of forest *** data used come from continuous forest inventories carried out in stands of eucalyptus *** data were divided into 70%for training and 30%for *** algorithms used to generate rules in ANFIS were Subtractive Clustering and ***,training was done with the hybrid algorithm(descending gradient and least squares)with the number of seasons ranging from 1 to *** RFs were trained,varying the number of trees from 50 to 850 and the number of observations by five leaves to *** neural networks and decision trees were also trained to compare the feasibility of the *** evaluation of the estimates generated by the techniques for training and validation was calculated based on the following statistics:correlation coefficient(r),relative Bias(RB),and the relative root mean square error(RRMSE)in *** general,the techniques studied in this work showed excellent performance for the training and validation data set with RRMSE values*** RF presented inferior statistics about the ANFIS for the prognosis of forest *** Subtractive Clustering(SC)and Fuzzy-C-Means(FCM)algorithms provide accurate baseline

The Sergipano Orogenic System(SOS)in southern Borborema Province(NE Brazil)hosts voluminous Neoproterozoic plutonism related to the Brasiliano/Pan-African *** paper presents comprehensive whole-rock geochemical data,titanite U-Pb ages,and the first combined zircon U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotope results for plutonic rocks from the MacururéDomain to constrain their sources,petrogenesis,and tectonic *** magmatic episodes are recognized and record the evolutionary stages of the orogen.(i)Early-collisional magmatism(643–628 Ma)comprises gabbros and diorites with minor tonalites characterized by well-developed tectonic foliation and evidence of solid-state *** rocks are magnesian,high-K calc-alkaline,LILE-and LREE-enriched and provide subchondriticε_(Hf)(t)values(6.5 to4.7)and Orosirian Hf-T^(C)_(DM)model ages(1.83–1.94 Ga).Such features indicate derivation from a lithospheric mantle source metasomatized by incorporating crustal components through subduction processes prior to magma generation,possibly related to the Rhyacian Orogeny(2.20–1.96 Ga).Extensive mixing/mingling between basaltic and crust-derived magmas took place at lower crustal depths,producing coeval hybrid diorites and quartz-diorites.(ii)Syn-collisional magmatism(630–624 Ma)encompasses biotite-and muscovite-bearing granodiorites and monzogranites,preserving their structures parallel to the schistosity of the country *** rocks are leucocratic,weakly metaluminous to peraluminous,and contain abundant surmicaceous *** features and geochemical composition suggest an origin related to the partial melting of graywacke protoliths with a subordinate igneous component.(iii)Late-collisional magmatism(625–600 Ma)includes undeformed and isotropic monzonites and granodiorites,which truncate the regional *** rocks are consistently metaluminous and magnesian,showing affinities with the high-K calc-alkaline to shoshonite *** element modeling with su

Moringa oleifera Lam(Moringaceae) is a plant with high nutritional and medicinal value. Native to India, it is now widely distributed throughout tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Its different parts are sources of proteins, vitamins and minerals and present different pharmacological and biotechnological potential. Moreover, M. oleifera seeds are widely used in water and effluent treatment, for their coagulation, flocculation and sedimentation properties, their ability of improving water quality, by reducing organic matter and microbial load, with special applicability in intensive animal production systems, such as aquaculture. In addition, due to its high nutritional value and several medicinal properties, this tree may act as a nutritional and medical alternative for socially neglected populations. In this context, this review gathers information on M. oleifera, emphasizing its chemical constituents, nutritional, pharmacological and antimicrobial properties, applications in the treatment of water effluents, and ecological and social aspects.
