The hair follicle is a biological oscillator that alternates growth,regression,and rest phases driven by the sequential activation of the proliferation differentiation programs of resident stem cell *** activation of hair follicle stem cell niches and subsequent entry into the growing phase is mainly regulated by Wnt/β-catenin signalling,while regression and resting phases are mainly regulated by Tgf-β/Bmp/Smad activity.A major question still unresolved is the nature of the molecular switch that dictates the coordinated transition between both signalling *** we have focused on the role of Endoglin(Eng),a key co-receptor for members of the Tgf-β/Bmp family of growth *** an Eng haploinsufficient mouse model,we report that Eng is required to maintain a correct follicle cycling pattern and for an adequate stimulation of hair follicle stem cell *** further report thatβ-catenin binds to the Eng promoter depending on Bmp ***,we show thatβ-catenin interacts with Smad4 in a Bmp/Eng-dependent context and both proteins act synergistically to activate Eng promoter *** observations point to the existence of a growth/rest switching mechanism in the hair follicle that is based on an Eng-dependent feedback cross-talk between Wnt/β-catenin and Bmp/Smad signals.

Creation of an oxygen-enriched environment during synthesis as an effective way to improve luminescent properties of Y_(2)O_(3):Eu^(3+)

The growing demand for luminescent nanomaterials intended for various applications increases the necessity to develop and improve approaches to the creation of highly efficient nanosized *** current study,an approach to enhancing the efficiency of red luminescence of monoclinic Y_(2)O_(3):Eu^(3+)with the particle size of~20 nm by creating the oxygen-enriched environment during the gas-phase synthesis was *** investigate the effect of oxygen amount during the synthesis on characteristics of the phosphor,a series of nano structured Y_(2)O_(3):Eu^(3+)with the addition of 0-40 vol%O_(2) to the main buffer gas Ar was synthesized by laser *** is shown that the amount of added O_(2) exerts virtually no effect on the phase composition and particle size,but significantly improves the luminescent characteristics of Y_(2)O_(3):Eu^(3+).Thus,the addition of 30 vol%O_(2) leads to virtually a 20-fold growth in the photoluminescence(PL)intensity caused by ^(5)D_(0)→^(7)F_(0-4) transitions in Eu^(3+)and an increase in the absolute PL quantum yield from 3%to 53%(λex=395 nm)compared to the sample synthesized without O_(2).The addition of oxygen also improves the emission color coordinates from(0.571,0.320)to(0.630,0.322)due to the removal of a considerable fraction of oxygen *** synthesized nanopowders are shown to be highly stable:upon storage under ambient conditions for two *** yield(QY)of the samples decreases by less than 2%.it is expected that the key features underlying the proposed approach will be useful for various methods used to synthesize oxide nanophosphors.

Differential diagnosis of uterine vascular anomalies:Uterine pseudoaneurysm as a cause of massive hemorrhage

in this article,we comment on the paper by Kakinuma et al published *** focus specifically on the diagnosis of uterine pseudoaneurysm,but we also review other uterine vascular anomalies that may be the cause of life-threating hemorrhage and the different causes of uterine *** artery pseudoaneurysm is a complication of both surgical gynecological and nontraumatic *** hemorrhage is the consequence of the rupture of the *** artery pseudoaneurysm can develop after obstetric or gynecological procedures,being the most frequent after cesarean or vaginal deliveries,curettage and even during ***,there are several cases described unrelated to pregnancy,such as after conization,hysteroscopic surgery or laparoscopic *** is the clinical manifestation and it can be life-threatening so suspicion of this vascular lesion is essential for early diagnosis and ***,there are other uterine vascular anomalies that may be the cause of severe hemorrhage,which must be taken into account in the differential *** tomography angiography and embolization is supposed to be the first therapeutic option in most of them.

Olfactory ensheathing glia promote axonal regeneration in the mammalian central nervous system,including retinal ganglion cell axonal growth through the injured optic ***,it is unknown whether olfactory ensheathing glia also have neuroprotective *** ensheathing glia express brain-derived neurotrophic factor,one of the best neuroprotectants for axotomized retinal ganglion ***,we aimed to investigate the neuroprotective capacity of olfactory ensheating glia after optic nerve *** ensheathing glia cells from an established rat immortalized clonal cell line,TEG3,were intravitreally injected in intact and axotomized retinas in syngeneic and allogeneic mode with or without microglial inhibition or immunosuppressive *** and gene expression analyses were *** bulb-derived primary olfactory ensheathing glia and TEG3 express major histocompatibility complex classⅡ*** and syngenically transplanted TEG3 cells survived in the vitreous for up to 21 days,forming an *** axotomized retinas,only the allogeneic TEG3 transplant rescued retinal ganglion cells at 7 days but not at 21 *** these retinas,microglial anatomical activation was higher than after optic nerve crush *** intact retinas,both transplants activated microglial cells and caused retinal ganglion cell death at 21 days,a loss that was higher after allotransplantation,triggered by pyroptosis and partially rescued by microglial inhibition or ***,neuroprotection of axotomized retinal ganglion cells did not improve with these *** different neuroprotective properties,different toxic effects,and different responses to microglial inhibitory treatments of olfactory ensheathing glia in the retina depending on the type of transplant highlight the importance of thorough preclinical studies to explore these variables.

Throughout the progress of epidemic scenarios,individuals in different health classes are expected to have different average daily contact *** contact heterogeneity has been studied in recent adaptive models and allows us to capture the inherent differences across health statuses *** with reinfection bring out more complex scenarios and offer an important application to consider contact ***,we developed a nonlinear differential equation model to explore the dynamics of relapse phenomena and contact differences across health *** incidence rate function is formulated,taking inspiration from recent adaptive *** incorporates contact behavior for individuals in each health *** use constant contact rates at each health status for our analytical results and prove conditions for different forward-backward bifurcation *** relationship between the different contact rates heavily in-fluences these *** examples highlight the effect of temporarily recov-ered individuals and initial conditions on infected population persistence.

Arctic sea-ice extent: No record minimum in 2023 or recent years

Arctic sea-ice extent reaches its minimum each year in September. On 11 September 2023 the minimum was 4.969 million square kilometers(***^(2)). This was not a record low, which occurred in 2012, when the minimum was 4.175 ***^(2), 0.794 ***^(2) less than the minimum in 2023. However, the ice extent had decreased by 0.432 ***^(2) compared with 2022. Nevertheless, the summer melting in 2023 was remarkably less than expected when considering the strong heat waves in the atmosphere and ocean, with record temperatures set around the world. in general, there is a high correlation between the long-term decrease in sea-ice extent and the increasing CO_(2) in the atmosphere, where the increase of CO_(2) in recent decades explains about 80% of the decrease in sea ice in September, while the remainder is caused by natural variability.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is a life-threatening inflammatory condition in which the invading pathogen avoids the host's defense mechanisms and continuously stimulates and damages host cells. Consequently, many immune responses initially triggered for protection become harmful because of the failure to restore homeostasis, resulting in ongoing hyperinflammation and immunosuppression. METHODS: A literature review was conducted to address bacterial sepsis, describe advances in understanding complex immunological reactions, critically assess diagnostic approaches, and emphasize the importance of studying bacterial bottlenecks in the detection and treatment of ***: Diagnosing sepsis via a single laboratory test is not feasible;therefore, multiple key biomarkers are typically monitored, with a focus on trends rather than absolute values. The immediate interpretation of sepsis-associated clinical signs and symptoms, along with the use of specific and sensitive laboratory tests, is crucial for the survival of patients in the early stages. However, long-term mortality associated with sepsis is now recognized, and alongside the progression of this condition, there is an in vivo selection of adapted ***: Bacterial sepsis remains a significant cause of mortality across all ages and societies. While substantial progress has been made in understanding the immunological mechanisms underlying the inflammatory response, there is growing recognition that the ongoing host-pathogen interactions, including the emergence of adapted virulent strains, shape both the acute and long-term outcomes in sepsis. This underscores the urgent need for novel high-throughput diagnostic methods and a shift toward more pre-emptive, rather than reactive, treatment strategies in sepsis care.

BACKGROUND Skeletal muscle alterations(SMAs)are being increasingly recognized in patients with metabolic dysfunctionassociated steatotic liver disease(MASLD)and appear to be associated with deleterious outcomes in these ***,their actual prevalence and pathophysiology remain to be *** To determine the prevalence of SMAs and to assess the significance of circulating myokines as biomarkers in patients with *** Skeletal muscle strength and muscle mass were measured in a cross-sectional study in a cohort of 62 patients fulfilling MASLD criteria,recruited from the outpatient clinics of a tertiary level *** degree of fibrosis and liver steatosis was studied using abdominal ultrasound and transitional *** and metabolic characteristics as well as serum levels of different myokines were also determined in the MASLD *** analysis was performed comparing results according to liver fibrosis and *** No significant differences were found in both skeletal muscle strength and skeletal muscle mass in patients with MASLD between different stages of liver ***,serum levels of fibroblast growth factor-21(FGF21)were significantly higher in patients with MASLD with advanced hepatic fibrosis(F3-F4)than in those with lower fibrosis stages(F0-F2)(197.49±198.27 pg/mL vs 95.62±83.67 pg/mL;P=0.049).in addition,patients with MASLD with severe hepatosteatosis(S3)exhibited significantly higher serum levels of irisin(1116.87±1161.86 pg/mL)than those with lower grades(S1-S2)(385.21±375.98 pg/mL;P=0.001).CONCLUSiON SMAs were uncommon in the patients with MASLD *** serum levels of irisin and FGF21 were detected in patients with advanced liver steatosis and fibrosis,respectively,with potential implications as biomarkers.

One-Dimensionality, Reliability, Distribution, and Correlates of the Brief interactive Optimism Scale among University Teachers

The Brief interactive Optimism Scale (BiOS-G), recently published, was developed to measure optimism based on the interactive personality styles theory in the general population of Mexican adults. it has been validated in both the general population in Mexico and other Latin American countries. This study aims to further consolidate the validity of the BiOS-G in a specific population. The objectives are to assess the psychometric properties of its items, validate its unidimensional structure, describe its distribution, verify its internal consistency, and examine its direct relationship with affective balance and positive affect, as well as its inverse relationship with emotional exhaustion and negative affect among Mexican university teachers. The BiOS-G, the CESQT emotional exhaustion subscale, and Scale of Positive and Negative Experience (SPANE) were administered to a non-probability sample of 213 Mexican university teachers. All items demonstrated discriminative power and internal consistency. The scale showed internal consistency (Green-Yang ordinal ω = 0.74 and McDonald ordinal ω = 0.88). The one-factor model presented good to acceptable fit to the data, with an average variance extracted of 0.65. its distribution was negatively skewed and mesokurtic. The BiOS-G correlated directly with SPANE’s affective balance and positive emotional experiences and inversely with negative emotional experiences and emotional exhaustion, with moderate strengths of association. its mean score was higher in men than in women and correlated positively with age. it is concluded that the BiOS-G demonstrates internal consistency and validity evidence among Mexican university teachers, and its use in this specific population is recommended.
