Management Implications of Aquifer Fractures on Ecosystem and Habitat Suitability for Panthers in Southern Florida

Our case study analyzed the proximity of previously mapped fractures in the aquifer matrix to 93 Florida panther (Puma concolor coryi) dens mapped from 2007-2016 in south Florida. Dens occurred in five counties (Collier = 77, Dade = 1, Hendry = 9, Lee = 5, and Monroe = 1) and three sub-basins of the Greater Everglades Basin (Big Cypress Swamp = 83, Caloosahatchee = 3, and Everglades = 7). Fractured aquifers occur worldwide, but are not the focus of habitat suitability studies, despite evidence that fractures influence plant species composition and density. Habitat alterations can occur many kilometers from the surface footprint of groundwater alterations in the regional Floridan aquifer system via preferential flow through fractures. Increased natural discharge from and recharge to the aquifer occur at fracture intersections. Greater induced recharge and habitat changes also may occur at fracture intersections. All dens were within 5 km of a previously mapped fracture;36% and 74% were within 1 km and 2 km, respectively, of those fractures;and 47%, 74%, and 90% of dens were within 2 km, 3.25 km and 5 km, respectively, from the nearest fracture intersection. Results suggest fractures influence the suitability and/or availability of habitat for panther dens, selection of den sites, and availability as well as abundance of high quality prey items essential for the nutritional demands of successfully rearing panther kittens in the wild. We recommend more detailed investigations of: a) vegetation characteristics near dens, b) groundwater alterations and cumulative impacts of those alterations associated with fractures in panther habitat (e.g., altered plant species composition and density), and c) influence of aquifer fractures in all habitats underlain by fractures.

Analysis and Extent of Santa Fe River Flooding in North Florida Attributed to Rainfall and Wind Damage Associated with Hurricane Irma

The Santa Fe River (SFR) is within the north Florida area of the regional Floridan aquifer system. The extent of recent flood damage in the SFR and tributaries in Bradford County has been attributed to rainfall and wind damage to trees associated with Hurricane Irma, September 2017. Implications of the determined cause of a disaster can include the allocation of disaster relief funds. Bradford County, Florida obtained approximately $2.5 million from the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) for emergency flood abatement assistance and $255,875 from the Suwannee River Water Management District (SRWMD), combined with $13,750 in-kind match provided by the county, based on the attributed cause of that damage to rainfall and winds from Hurricane Irma. On January 2, 2018, Bradford County commissioners also approved grant applications to the SRWMD for $2.2 million for Alligator Creek Flood Mitigation and for $90,250 for Hampton Lake Canal to Santa Fe River Flood Mitigation, requiring in-kind matches from the county of $110,000 and $4750, respectively. Our study analyzed historical precipitation data for the SFR Basin and headwaters from 1895 through 2017 and recorded discharge and gage heights from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) to evaluate that presumed cause of flood damage in that basin and to provide a better understanding of historical relationships between precipitation, gage data and flooding in that basin. Recorded USGS peak gage height and Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) also were used to illustrate the lateral extent and relative depth of flooding associated with an extreme precipitation event in the lower SFR vicinity of O’Leno State Park. Finally, we evaluated the condition of the trees in the SFR Basin as an indicator of long-term anthropogenic groundwater alterations. Petrography and Mineralogy of the Quartz and Quartz-Feldspar Sulphide Veins in the Pan-African Syenitic Massif of Guider (North Cameroon)

In the syenitic pluton of Guider (593 ± 4 Ma) in the North-West Cameroon domain of Central African Fold Belt, mineralized N-S to NE-SW vertical or sub-vertical quartz and quartz feldspar veins has been recently identified. In this contribution, we present petrography and mineralogy of these veins, in order to constrain their genesis and emplacement mechanisms based on detailed field work, petrographic studies and chemical characterization of minerals by using an electron probe microanalyser (EPMA). Field observations and vein microstructures show that the emplacement of the veins has been controlled by the dextral N-S trending strike-slip shear zones related to the regional D2 deformation phase. The results of mineralogical analysis reveal the co-presence of silicates and metallic minerals that include magnetite, ilmenite, pyrite, bismuthite, galena (very rare) and sulphide complexes (BiPbS, BiAgPbS, FeBiPbCuS, BiFe(TeS), FeBiPbS, BiPbCuS). The gangue is represented by quartz (quartz 1, quartz 2 and quartz 3), feldspars, sericite, chlorite, yellowish brown clay minerals, and hematite. The textural relationships between sulphides, quartz and alteration products show that the mineralization is essentially syn- to late-D2 and suggest that syenitic country rock and dextral shear zones have played an important role in the metallogenesis of these veins. This mineralization shows characteristics for copper-bearing calc-alkaline deposits, but differs from these by its more extensive alteration and its abundance in hematite. Substitutions of Al(IV) by Si(IV) in sericite associated with the sulphide mineralization and cataclastic deformation suggest that the temperature of trapping of the fluids is between 230°C and 275°C.

Empowering Women and Ethnic Minority Groups to Collectively Market non Timber Forest Products from Community Forests in Cameroon

Community forestry （CF） was introduced in Cameroon in 1994 as a way to reduce poverty and enhance sustainable forest management. CF activities have primarily focused on timber exploitation rather than non-timber forest product （NTFP） collection, processing or marketing. The study reports on a two year participatory action research project that aimed to test ways of increasing access to income from NTFPs for women and people of the Baka ethnic group in nine CFs around Lomie, East Cameroon. After a participatory diagnosis of problems and stakeholders harvesting NTFPs, approaches to enhance processing, packaging, marketing, monitoring and data collection were evaluated. This led to the development of a market information system that aimed to balance supply and demandby providing information lines on market prices between buyers and sellers. Training support was provided for sustainable harvesting, and to aid harvesters to negotiate prices. This led to 100% price increase in group sales; an increase in selling prices by 39% and an increased sales volume of six NTFPs： Irvingia gabonensis, Ricinodendron heudelotii, Pentacletra macrophylla, Baillonela toxisperma, Tetrapleura tetraptera, Pleurotus tuber-regiumresulting in a sales revenue increaseof 210% （to ε772,500） between 2010 and 2012. In a context where logging is restricted to men, supporting access to NTFP markets has led to increased income for women and Baka. These results suggest that support to sustainably harvest and market NTFPs can aid development and access to markets for women and minority ethnic groups. The implications for the revision of the law on small scale commercialization, and the ability of the CFs to continue this system without support from development NGOs are discussed.

Physical activity in persons with Parkinson disease: A feasibility study

Background: Physical activity for persons with Parkinson Disease (PD) is recommended yet little is known about the physical activity levels in this patient population. The primary aim was to assess the feasibility of using a direct measurement and self-report measure of physical activity in patients with PD. Methods: Physical activity was recorded in 11 out-patients with mild to moderate PD. An accelerometer based sensor system (SenseWear Pro Armband?) which was worn continuously over 2 days was used to measure physical activity. Minute by minute energy expenditure and steps per day were recorded. Self-report physical activity was measured using the Short QUestionnaire to ASsess Health-enhancing physical activity (SQUASH) which assessed average weekly activity. Results: Using the accelerometer based sensor system, 83% of the day was spent in sedentary activity with the majority active time spent at a light intensity (2.7 [SD 2.0] hrs/day). Self-reported mean number of hours for activities greater than 2.0 METs was 3.4 (SD 1.5) hrs/day. Although the overall time spent in activity did not differ between the accelerometer and SQUASH, partici- pants reported a higher proportion of activities at the moderate and vigorous intensities than the accelerometer recorded. Conclusions: Measurement of physical activity is a challenge in persons with PD given the disease-related symptoms. We found that, by all accounts, a self-report measure of physical activity should be complemented with a direct measure of physical activity.

Preliminary Data on Legionella Detection in Water Distribution Systems in Cameroon

After the declaration of the first case of Legionnaire＇s disease in Cameroon in 2007, the Centre Pasteur of Cameroon implemented the detection method for Legionella. The introduction of this new method was put in places in order to investigate Legionella spp. colonization of water distribution systems （WDS） of large buildings including hospitals, hotels and Off Shore Exploitations Sites （OSES） in an attempt to identify risk factors for Legionella spp. Water systems of 6 hotels, 6 hospitals and 6 ships were investigated for the presence of Legionella spp.. A total of 130 samples were collected, 77 from hotels, 27 from hospitals and 26 from ships. 51 Legionella spp. were isolated from 41 （31.54%） water samples. Of a total of 51 positive isolates, 40/51 （78.4%） were L. pneumophila with 21 （52.5%） Legionellapneumophila serogroup （sg） 1, 16 （40%） L. pneumophila sg 5, 2 （5%） L. pneumophila sg 6, 1 （2.5%） L. pneumophila sg 7 and 11/51 Legionella spp. with 10 （90%） L. anisa, 1 （10%） Legionella dumoffii. 5 L. pneumophila sg 1 were associated with 5 L. pneumophila sg 5 and 4 L. pneumophila sg 1 were associated with 4 L. anisa. These results showed that WDS of hospitals, hotels and ships can be heavily colonized by Legionella spp. and may present a risk of Legionnaires＇ disease. Based on these preliminary results, we have just put in place a Legionella survey protocol in Cameroon.

Domestication Test of Halopegia azurea （Karl Moritz Schumann）（Marantaceae）： Preliminary Study on the Rhizome Cuttings

In order to domesticate H. azurea （Halopegia azurea）, acclimatization of rhizome＇s cuttings and young shoots in farms was tested at Nkol Evodo village from February 2012 to June 2012. The best substrate for propagation was assessed：（0） wetland; （1） sand/wetland; （2） sawdust/wetland; （3） sand/sawdust/wetland. Young shoots＇ growth was observed in situ for 8 weeks. A significant difference （P 〈 0.05） was observed in the appearance of young shoots and leaves in nursery. The highest average number of young shoots and leaves （0.62 ± 0.09） was found in substrates 0 and 1, the lowest （0.31 ± 0.08） in substrate 3. Substrate 3 showed the lowest number of young leaves （0.41 ± 0.16） and substrate 2 the highest （0.97 ±0.24）. A significant difference in the mortality rate of cuttings （P 〈 0.05） was observed： 68.75% and 53.12% in substrates 2 and 3, respectively. On farm, new leaves and young shoots＇ appearance showed a highly significant difference. Plants growing in substrates 2 and 3 showed the highest number of leaves. New shoots developed only in plants growing in substrates 0 and 1. These results suggest that it is possible to domesticate H. azurea for leaves＇ production in quantity and quality, and open up better opportunities for its cultivation.
