Biodegradability of four phthalic acid esters under anaerobic condition assessed using natural sediment

Biodegradability of di-n-butyl phthalate （DBP）, butylbenzyl phthalate （BBP）, di-ethylhexyl phthalate （DEHP）, and di-isononyl phthalate （DINP） under an anaerobic condition was evaluated using three natural sediment microcosms obtained from ponds in Osaka, which had not been significantly polluted by the chemicals. The degradabilities of the four phthalic acid esters（PAEs） were analyzed by a first-order kinetic model with a lag phase and ranked as DBP〉BBP〉〉DEHP〉DINP. The PAEs with shorter alkyl-chains, DBP and BBP, were degraded with quite short lag phases near to zero and short half-lives of a few days. The PAEs with longer alkyl-chains, DEHP and DINP, were degraded with lag phases of 5-30 d and the quite long half-lives of a couple of hundred days. Although no data was available on the anaerobic biodegradability of D1NP before this study, it was clarified that DINP can be degraded with slow degradation rates. The fact that all the three intact sediments were capable of biodegradation of the PAEs suggests that potential of anaerobic biodegradation of PAEs is widespread in the aquatic environment.

The solutions of the Schrodinger equation with quantum mechanical gravitational potential plus harmonic oscillator potential have been presented using the parametric Nikiforov-Uvarov method. The bound state energy eigen values and the corresponding un-normalized eigen functions are obtained in terms of Laguerre polynomials. Also a special case of the potential has been considered and its energy eigen values are obtained.

Water-Soluble Chitosan(WSC)has been sucessfuly synthesized from squid pens *** synthesis of chitosan from chitin was carried out by optimization of deacetylation temperature and *** was obtained from squid pens waste by demineralization and deproteinization *** 7%was used for demineralization and NaOH 10%at 60℃ was applied for deproteinization *** reaction was carried out at varied temperatures i.e.,60℃,70℃,80℃,90℃ and 100℃ in NaOH 50%solution for 10 *** reaction time were varied for 2 hours,4 hours,6 hours,8 hours,and 10 *** crude chitosan obtained then reacted with H2O230%to *** synthesis product obtained then characterized by *** result of squid chitin yield was 33.9%.The optimum temperature and time of chitosan deacetylation process were 90℃ for 8 hours as indicated by the value of deacetylation degree(DD)that equal to 83.94%at optimum temperature and 82.22%at optimum reaction *** percentage of WSC yield at optimum temperature(90℃)and optimum time(8 hours)were 27.59%and 23.16%,*** solubility test was done in water and HCl 0,*** solubility of 2.8325 mg/mL and 0.8125 mg/mL were obtained in acid medium and water medium,respectively.

Capsule shells have been successfully fabricated from water-soluble chitosan(WSC)with the addition of alginate and Gembili *** was synthesized from crab shell chitosan by depolymerization *** capsule shells were made with the composition of WSC:Alginate,2:1,3:1 and 4:1(w/w)with and without the addition of Gembili *** starch was added with a ratio of Alginate:Starch,1:1(w/w).The capsule shell properties were evaluated according to Indonesian Pharmacopoeia *** solubility test showed that the capsule shells were comply with the *** highest degrees of swelling in water and HCl 0.1 N solution were 491.93%and 410.51%,*** highest degradation percentages in water and HCl 0.1 N solution were 57.80%and 21.44%,*** observation of physical appearance indicated that the capsule shell with WSC:Alginate:Starch in ratio of 3:1:1 has appearance close to commercial capsule shell.

Objective:To evaluate factors associated with prevalence of malaria parasitaemia at first antenatal care ***:The study was conducted at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital from 1st June,2007 to 31st July,2007.A structured questionnaire was administered to a total of 545 pregnant women that were recruited in this study after obtaining informed consent and two slides of thin and thick films were prepared for each ***:Five hundred and twenty(95.4%) out of the 545 participants suffered from malaria parasitaemia,the rest 4.6%of those who had no parasitaemia had experienced symptomatic malaria before and were treated in private hospitals prior to their recruitment into the *** participants(100%) who did not have antimalarials had parasitaemia compared with 91.1%among those that had *** proportion of moderate to severe parasitaemia was also significantly higher among the ***,the difference in parasitaemia between primigravidae and multigravidae was statistically significant(P=0.000) too. Among the methods used for vector control,only insecticide treated nets(ITNS) was associated with significant reduction in the level of parasitaemia(RR=0.83).Conclusion:Malaria parasitaemia at first booking is significandy higher in primigravidae and women who have no anti-malaria treatment. The use of safe and effective antimalarial treatment along with ITNs will significandy reduce the level of parasitaemia in pregnant women.

According to Felice Vinci＇s revolutionary theory of the Nordic origins of the Homeric poems, the Achaeans who migrated to the Aegean Sea to found the Mycenaean civilization--whose language actually was an Ionian dialect, similar to that of Homer--were the laones, deriving their origin from Sweden. The italian scholar offers significant analogies to prove his hypothesis, drawing them from several scientific disciplines, such as history （the movement appears similar to that of Varangians, who in the Middle Ages moved from Sweden to found the kingdom of Rus＇）, geography （the promontory of Cape Sounion, located 43 miles south-southeast of Athens, seems to be a souvenir of the same name）, archaeology （the spiral shape, one of the most popular ones in the volutes of the Ionic capitals, was a common decoration also during the Nordic Bronze Age）, and literature （especially a remarkable quotation taken from Plato, Critias 111e）. In the author＇s contribution, he tries to check Felice Vinci＇s interpretation through a careful survey in ancient literature and linguistics, in order to verify the etymological connections between the ancient people of laones and the Tacitean Suiones.

In this research,activated carbon from mangosteen peel has been synthesized using sulfuric acid as an *** adsorption performance of the activated carbon was optimized using malachite green dye as ***-chite green dye waste is a toxic and non-biodegradable material that damages the *** of adsorption processes was carried out using Response Surface Methodology(RSM)with a Box-Behnken Design(BBD).The synthesized activated carbon was characterized using FTIR and SEM *** FTIR spectra conﬁrmed the presence of a sulfonate group(-SO_(3)H)in the activated carbon,indicating that the activation pro-cess using sulfuric acid was *** characterization shows that activated carbon has porous *** was carried out for three adsorption parameters,namely contact time(20,60,and 120 min),adsor-bent mass(0.005,0.025,and 0.05 g),and initial concentration of malachite green solution(5,50,and 100 mg·L^(-1)).The concentration of the malachite green solution was determined using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer at the max-imum wavelength of malachite green,618 *** optimum of malachite green adsorption using mangosteen peel activated carbon was obtained at a contact time of 80 min,an adsorbent mass of 0.032 g,and malachite green initial concentration of 25 mg·L^(-1),with a maximum removal percentage and maximum adsorption capacity of 93.66%and 19.345 mg·g^(-1),respectively.

In this study, toxic equivalent factors and sediment quality guidelines were employed for the assessment of toxicity potential of PAHs in 2 sediment cores collected from the center (RC) and shoreline (RS) of Reforme lake, SE Nigeria over the last ~1 century. Boundary cross plots of isomeric ratios such as Ant/Ant + Phe (>0.1) vs. Fl/Fl + Pyr (>0.4) and BaA/BaA + Chry (>0.35) vs. Icdp/Icdp + Bper (>0.2) indicated biomass combustion/domestic coal utilization as the main sources of PAHs input. The result revealed toxicity unit indices (TU1, 1.22 - 1.57) for the two cores were above the thresholds of no effect. The highest TU1 value found in the near-bottom layer (RS5, 20 - 25 cm) of the RS corresponding to geological time-frame ~1930-1947 coincided with the period of inhabitation by the European settlers along the lake’s catchments when coal or coal products utilization for domestic and recreational purposes was at its peak. On the other hand, TU2 values were <1 at all depth intervals, revealing unlikely PAH effects to resident organisms. Total toxicity equivalency factors (TEqFs) for the surface sediment of RS and RC were 9.29 ng/g TEqFs and 9.16 ng/g TEqFs, respectively, and indicated that more attention should be paid to BaPyr accumulation in the lake’s sediment.
