Drones are increasingly used for fauna monitoring and wildlife tracking;however,their application for wildlife tracking is restricted by developing such systems.Here we explore the potential of drones for wildlife tracking using an off-the-shelf system that is easy to use by non-specialists consisting of a multirotor drone,smartphones,and commercial tracking devices via Bluetooth and Ultra-Wide Band(UWB).We present the system configuration,explore the operational parameters that can affect detection capabilities,and test the effectiveness of the system for locating targets by simulating target animals in savanna and forest environments.The self-contained tracking system was built without hardware or software customization.In 40 tracking flights carried out in the Brazilian Cerrado,we obtained a detection rate of 90%in savanna and 40%in forest areas.Tests for targets in movement(N=20),the detection rates were 90%in the savanna and 30%in the forest areas.The spatial accuracy obtained by the system was 14.61 m,being significantly more accurate in savanna(x=10.53)than in forest areas(x=13.06).This approach to wildlife tracking facilitates the use of drones by non-specialists at an affordable cost for conservation projects with limited resources.The reduced size of the tags,the long battery life,and the iower cost compared to GPS-tags open up a range of opportunities for animal tracking.

Background This work aims to provide an overview of the Mixed Reality(MR)technology’s use in maritime industry for training purposes.Current training procedures cover a broad range of procedural operations for Life-Saving Appliances(LSA)lifeboats;however,several gaps and limitations have been identified related to the practical training that can be addressed through the use of MR.Augmented,Virtual and Mixed Reality applications are already used in various fields in maritime industry,but their full potential have not been yet exploited.SafePASS project aims to exploit MR advantages in the maritime training by introducing a relevant application focusing on use and maintenance of LSA lifeboats.Methods An MR Training application is proposed supporting the training of crew members in equipment usage and operation,as well as in maintenance activities and procedures.The application consists of the training tool that trains crew members on handling lifeboats,the training evaluation tool that allows trainers to assess the performance of trainees,and the maintenance tool that supports crew members to perform maintenance activities and procedures on lifeboats.For each tool,an indicative session and scenario workflow are implemented,along with the main supported interactions of the trainee with the equipment.Results The application has been tested and validated both in lab environment and using a real LSA lifeboat,resulting to improved experience for the users that provided feedback and recommendations for further development.The application has also been demonstrated onboard a cruise ship,showcasing the supported functionalities to relevant stakeholders that recognized the added value of the application and suggested potential future exploitation areas.Conclusions The MR Training application has been evaluated as very promising in providing a user-friendly training environment that can support crew members in LSA lifeboat operation and maintenance,while it is still subject to improvement and further expansion.

Dilaridae are a distinctive and phylogenetically ambiguous neuropteran family.So far,the anatomy of the immature stages remains largely unknown.We examined the 1st instar larvae of Dilar montanus in detail and present results of live observations for the first time.The minute,cryptic larvae display features correlated with their underground lifestyle:for instance,a strongly flattened head,stout antennae,eyelessness,and burrowing forelegs.In contrast to molecular data,several characters suggest a‘dilarid clade’combining Dilaridae with Mantispoidea,for instance a very thin and curved or reduced tentorial bridge,and an elongated postmentum.We found intrinsic antennal muscles and Johnston's organ,the first record of these structures in holometabolous larvae.This proves that the first 2 larval antennomeres are homologous with the scapus and pedicellus.The described characters are discussed and analyzed with an updated matrix of neuropteran larval characters.Alternative scenarios of character evolution are presented.Additionally,we show how the 1st-instar larvae move and feed in the substrate,and also provide a high-resolution video recording of the function of the elongate tubular ovipositor and the egg-laying behavior in an adult female under natural conditions.

Glioblastoma(GBM)is one of the most aggressive(grade IV)gliomas characterized by a high rate of recurrence,resistance to therapy and a grim survival prognosis.The long-awaited improvement in GBM patients'survival rates essentially depends on advances in the development of new therapeutic approaches.Recent preclinical studies show that nanoscale materials could greatly contribute to the improvement of diagnosis and management of brain cancers.In the current review,we will discuss how specific features of glioma pathobiology can be employed for designing efficient targeting approaches.Moreover,we willsummarize the main evidence for the potential of the IL-13R alpha 2 receptor(IL13α2R)targeting in GBM early diagnosis and experimental therapy.

The Annona genus is a member of Annonaceae,one of the largest families of plants across tropical and subtropical regions.This family has been used in several ethnomedicinal practices to treat a multitude of human diseases.However,the molecular mechanism underlying its effect on the lipid droplet formation and on the expression of adipogenic markers of this plant remain to be investigated.In this study,we examined whether the extracts from the aerial part of Annona montana affect in vitro differentiation of preadipocytes.For our investigations,both mouse embryo fibroblast 3T3-L1 and normal human primary subcutaneous preadipocytes were incubated with Annona montana extracts(-and its subfractions-)and then analyzed on preadipocyte differentiation,lipid content,lipid droplet size and number,the expression of adipogenic-specific transcriptional factors,as well as cell survival.From our examinations,we found the Annona montana ethyl acetate extract to exhibit a potent inhibitory effect on adipogenesis,without affecting cell survival,in a dose-dependent manner.Such inhibitory effects included a significant decrease in the accumulation of lipid content by both a dramatic reduction of size and number of lipid droplets.This extract strongly attenuated the expression of PPARγand HMGB2.It also inhibited the expression of CEBPα,FAS,and Akt without influencing Erk1/2 activities.Our findings suggest that specifically,the Annona montana ethyl acetate extract has a prominent inhibitory effect in cellular pathways of adipocyte differentiation by modulating specific gene expression,which is known to perform a pivotal role during adipogenesis.

The tremendous potential of triboelectric generators-TENGs for converting mechanical energy into electrical energy places them as one of the most promising energy harvesting technologies. In this work, the fabrication of enhanced performance TENGs using Ag octahedron nano-assemblies on ITO as electrodes significantly increases the electric charge collection of the induced tribocharges. Thereby, nanostructured electrical contacts coated with Ag macroscale nano-assemblies with octahedral features were obtained by the electrodeposition technique on flexible PET/ITO substrates. Consequently, the nanostructured triboelectric generator-TENG exhibited 65 times more maximum output power, and almost 10 times more open circuit output voltage than that of a TENG with non-nanostructured contacts passing from μW to m W capabilities, which was attributed to the increment of intrinsic interface states due to a higher effective contact area in the former. Likewise, output performances of TENGs also displayed an asymptotic behavior on the output voltage as the operating frequency of the mechanical oscillations increased, which is attributed to a decrement in the internal impedance of the device with frequency. Furthermore, it is shown that the resulting electrical output power can successfully drive low power consumption electronic devices. On that account, the present research establishes a promising platform which contributes in an original way to the development of the TENGs technology.

Particulate matter(PM_(2.5))samples were collected in the vicinity of an industrial chemical pole and analysed for organic and elemental carbon(OC and EC),47 trace elements and around 150 organic constituents.On average,OC and EC accounted for 25.2% and 11.4% of the PM_(2.5) mass,respectively.Organic compounds comprised polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs),alkylated PAHs,anhydrosugars,phenolics,aromatic ketones,glycerol derivatives,aliphatic alcohols,sterols,and carboxyl groups,including aromatic,carboxylic and dicarboxylic acids.Enrichment factors>100 were obtained for Pb,Cd,Zn,Cu,Sn,B,Se,Bi,Sb and Mo,showing the contribution of industrial emissions and nearby major roads.Principal component analysis revealed that vehicle,industrial and biomass burning emissions accounted for 66%,11% and 9%,respectively,of the total PM_(2.5)-bound PAHs.Some of the detected organic constituents are likely associated with plasticiser ingredients and thermal stabilisers used in the manufacture of PVC and other plastics in the industrial complex.Photooxidation products of both anthropogenic(e.g.,toluene)and biogenic(e.g.,isoprene and pinenes)precursors were also observed.It was estimated that biomass burning accounted for 13.8%of the PM_(2.5) concentrations and that secondary OC represented 37.6% of the total OC.The lifetime cancer risk from inhalation exposure to PM_(2.5)-bound PAHs was found to be negligible,but it exceeded the threshold of 10−6 for metal(loi)s,mainly due to Cr and As.

Microalgae Improve the Photosynthetic Performance of Rice Seedlings(Oryza sativa L.)under Physiological Conditions and Cadmium Stress

The aim of this study was to assess the impact of the microalgae Chlorella vulgaris on the rice seedlings at physiological conditions and under cadmium(Cd)stress.We examined the effects of C.vulgaris in the nutrient solution on rice seedlings grown hydroponically in the presence and the absence of 150μM CdCl2,using the low(77 K)temperature and pulse amplitude modulated(PAM)chlorophyll fluorescence,P700 photooxidation measurements,photochemical activities of both photosystems,kinetic parameters of oxygen evolution,oxidative stress markers(MDA,H_(2)O_(2) and proline),pigment content,growth parameters and Cd accumulation.Data revealed that the application C.vulgaris not only stimulates growth and improves the functions of photosynthetic apparatus under physiological conditions,but also reduces the toxic effect of Cd on rice seedlings.Furthermore,the presence of the green microalgae in the nutrient solution of the rice seedlings during Cd exposure,signifi-cantly improved the growth,photochemical activities of both photosystems,the kinetic parameters of the oxygen-evolving reactions,pigment content and decreased lipid peroxidation,H_(2)O_(2) and proline content.Data showed that the alleviation of Cd-induced effects in rice seedlings is a result of the Cd sorption by microalgae,as well as the reduced Cd accumulation in the roots and its translocation from the roots to the shoots.

In this paper,we propose a neoteric and high-efficiency single image dehazing algorithm via contrast enhancement which is called STRASS(Spatio-Temporal Retinex-Inspired by an Averaging of Stochastic Samples)dehazing,it is realized by constructing an efficient high-pass filter to process haze images and taking the influence of human vision system into account in image dehazing principles.The novel high-pass filter works by getting each pixel using RSR and computes the average of the samples.Then the low-pass filter resulting from the minimum envelope in STRESS framework has been replaced by the average of the samples.The final dehazed image is yielded after iterations of the high-pass filter.STRASS can be run directly without any machine learning.Extensive experimental results on datasets prove that STRASS surpass the state-of-the-arts.Image dehazing can be applied in the field of printing and packaging,our method is of great significance for image pre-processing before printing.
