Reversible protein phosphorylation is a central regulatory mechanism of cell function. Deregulation of the balanced actions of protein kinases and phosphatases has been frequently associated with several pathological conditions, including cancer. Many studies have already addressed the role of protein kinases misregulation in cancer. However, much less is known about protein phosphatases influence. Phosphoprotein Phosphatase 1 (PPP1) is one of the major serine/threonine protein phosphatases who has three catalytic isoforms: PPP1CA, PPP1CB, and PPP1CC. Its function is achieved by binding to regulatory subunits, known as PPP1-interacting proteins (PIPs), which may prefer a catalytic isoform. Also, some inhibitors/enhancers may exhibit isoform specificity. Here we show that, prodigiosin (PG), a molecule with anticancer properties, promotes the formation of PPP1CA-AKT complex and not of PPP1CC-MAPK complex. Both, AKT and MAPK, are well-known PIPs from two pathways that crosstalk and regulate melanoma cells survival. In addition, the analysis performed using surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technology indicates that PPP1 interacts with obatoclax (OBX), a drug that belongs to the same family of PG. Overall, these results suggest that PG might, at least in part, act through PPP1C/PIPs. Also, this study is pioneer in demonstrating PPP1 isoform-specific modulation by small molecules.

DNA barcoding-based species delimitation increases species count of Eois （Geometridae） moths in a well-studied tropical mountain forest by up to 50%

The genus Eois comprises an important part of megadiverse assemblages of geometrid moths in mountain rainforests of southern Ecuador. In this study we report：（i） on the construction of a DNA barcode library of Eois for identification purposes; and （ii） the exploration of species diversity through species delimitation by pair-wise distance thresholds. COl barcode sequences were generated from 408 individuals （at least 105 species） collected on a narrow geographic scale （-40 km2） in the Reserva Bioldgica San Francisco. Analyses of barcode sequence divergence showed that species delimitations based solely on external morphology result in broad overlap of intra- and interspecific distances. Species delimitation at a 2% pair-wise distance threshold reveals a clear barcoding gap. Fifty-two previously unrecognized species were identified, 31 of which could only be distinguished by an integrative taxonomy approach. Twelve additional putative species could only be recognized by threshold-based delimitation. Most splits resulted in two or three newly perceived cryptic taxa. The present study increased the number of Eois species recorded from that small area of Andean mountain forest from 102 to 154 （morphology- plus integrative taxonomy-based） or even 166 （sequence-based）, leaving the species accumulation curve still far from reaching an asymptote. Notably, in no case did two or more previously distinguished morphospecies have to be lumped. This barcode inventory can be used to match larvae to known adult samples without rearing, and will therefore be of vital help to extend the currently limited knowledge about food plant relationships and host specialization.

Escape to the high canopy thermal deficiency causes niche expansion in a forest-floor ant

The small formicoxenine ant Temnothorax saxonicus was known from about 40 localities in Central Europe nesting in anorganie substrates on floor of xerothermous forests whereas investigations of 198 tree canopies in 19 forest sites of the same region provided no indication for arboreal nesting or foraging. We present the first evidence for canopy-nesting populations of T. saxonicus on old Quercus trees in 3 sites having maximum calibrated topsoil temperatures of 17.9 ± 0.3 ℃ which were significantly （P 〈 0.007） lower than 22.8 ± 2.0 ℃ measured in 5 sites with ground-nesting populations. The thermal deficit on forest floor inhibits brood development in ground nests and caused a moving to canopy were maximum calibrated temperatures of the, now wooden, substrates are at least 26.1 ℃for the whole canopy and 30.8 ℃ in more sun-exposed spots. T. saxonieus competed here successfully with the obligatory canopy ants T. affinis and T. cortiealis. The distributional data of this rope-climbing study support former results that highest nest densities of small arboreal ants occur in temperate climate over the entire canopy mantle of single trees situated in open land or in park-like environments but occur in the top of the canopy in tree stands with high degree of canopy closure.

Metadata Analysis of Persistent Organic Pollutants in National Pools of Human Milk in Support of the Stockholm Convention Implementation

A set of human milk samples,consisting of pools from up to 50 mothers that delivered their first baby was assessed for the persistent organic pollutants(POPs)listed in the Stockholm *** must be noted that only samples that qualified for the criteria,as established in the global monitoring plan of the Stockholm Convention,following an initial protocol from the World Health Organization,were *** data do not allow for an assessment of POP concentrations in breast milk with lactation period nor,in most cases and when not indicated otherwise,a comparison within the same *** assessment does not rank the POPs as to the risk for *** the measurements provide a basis for countries to compare among POPs or with other countries.A regional preference for certain POPs could not be identified;thus,taking into account global food supply chains and local production elsewhere does not allow us to prioritize a country for a certain *** the highest concentrations were always found for the sum of DDT,these samples were not prominent in multivariate statistical *** best indicator for the scale of POPs in breast milk was the sampling year:the earlier a national pool was created,the higher and the wider spread were the concentrations:see the example of dioxin-like POPs and indicator *** some POPs,the income of a country seems to indicate scale and POP *** population density was not found to be a suitable predictor or *** all POPs seemed to level off and some POPs were only measured after the entry-into-force of the Stockholm Convention in 2004,we do not have a strong indicator to determine POP concentrations in the 1980s or before.

EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION ON ORDERED AND CHAOTIC PHENOMENA OF VORTEX SHEDDING IN THE WAKE FLOW BEHIND A TWO-DIMENSIONAL CIRCULAR CYLINDER

In this paper, some preliminary experiments of ordered and chaotic vortex sheddingsbehind a 2--D circular cylinder at Reynolds numbers ranging from R_e=50 to 400 are presented.A transition in vortex shedding from the laminar to chaotic state occurs at Re=184.6-193.5,but it is seemingly not through the quasi--periodicity routes. There is a couple of dis-continuities in slope on the curve of the relationship between the vortex shedding frequencyand Reynolds number. The discontinuity at Re = 70 might correspond to the change of themode of the oblique vortex shedding. The second one at Re = 193.5 is responsible for thetransition from the ordered to the chaotic state.

Perfluoroalkane acids in human milk under the global monitoring plan of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants(2008-2019)

Within the global monitoring plan(GMP)established by article 16 of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants,perfluorooctane sulfonic acid(PFOS),perfluorooctanoic acid(PFOA),and perfluorohexane sulfonic acid(PFHxS)are recommended for analysis in core matrices to assess occurrence and changes geographically and with *** 101 samples consisting of 86 national pools and 15 pools from States in Brazil obtained between 2008 and 2019,PFHxS was detected in 17%of the national pools and none in *** and PFOS had a detection frequency of 100%and 92%,*** perfluoroalkane substances(PFAS)had either low detection frequencies and median values of zero(carboxylic acids C4-C11;except PFOA)or could not be quantified in any sample(sulfonic acids,C4-C10,and long-chain carboxylic acids,C_(12)-C_(14)).Correlation between PFOA and PFOS was moderately(r=0.58).Whereas median values were almost identical(18.9 pg/g *** PFOS;18.6 pg/g *** PFOA),PFOS showed larger ranges(<6.2 pg/g f.w.-212 pg/g f.w.)than PFOA(<6.2 pg/g f.w.-63.4 pg/g f.w.).It was shown that wealthier countries had higher PFOA concentrations than poorer *** difference in concentrations was found for samples collected in countries having or not having ratified the Stockholm Convention amendments to list PFOS or *** goal to achieve 50%decrease in concentrations within ten years was met by Antigua and Barbuda,Kenya,and Nigeria for PFOS and by Antigua and Barbuda for *** a few cases,increases were observed;one country for PFOS,four countries for PFOA.

Ordered and chaotic phenomena of vortex shedding in an excited wake flow behind a 2-D oscillating circular cylinder

The behavior of synchronization in an open flow dynamical system, especially in an excited wake flow behind a 2-D oscillating circular cylinder with Reynolds number Re ranging from 45 to 200 is presented. The experiment reveals that only under certain conditions can the competition between frequencies of oscillating cylinder and the vortex shedding in the wake flow result in 'window of chaos' with the mixed RTN and Feigenbaum scenario in the range of Re<185.

为探明亚麻纤维增强树脂复合材料(FFRPs)在长期潮湿环境中的力学性能变化规律,基于真空辅助树脂模塑传递成型(VARTM)手段制备了的干燥状态的单向FFRPs(纤维体积分数为40vol%)。试验研究了FFRPs在30°C、80%相对湿度(RH)环境中放置5天、35天、86天后拉伸力学性能变化。结果表明,FFRPs在湿热环境中吸水量近似符合一维情况下的Fickian第二定律,饱和吸水量为5.3%左右。FFRPs在垂直于纤维方向上的拉伸强度和模量随吸湿度增加递减,断口微观分析表明吸湿降低了纤维基体界面结合性能。然而,FFRPs在纤维方向上的拉伸强度并未因吸湿降低,反而在吸湿过程呈现出先减小后增加的趋势,此变化规律文献中尚未报道:相比干燥状态,放置5天后拉伸强度下降5.7%;放置35天后拉伸强度增加18.7%;放置86天时样品已处在饱和吸湿状态,拉伸强度略微减小,但仍比干燥状态增加13.7%。FFRPs在纤维取向上拉伸强度变化可解释为多因素共同作用的结果。

Fate and risk assessment of emerging contaminants in reclaimed water production processes

Reclaimed water has been widely applied in irrigation and industrial *** the behavior of emerging contaminants in the production process of reclaimed water is the first prerequisite for developing relevant water quality *** study investigated 43 emerging contaminants,including 22 pharmaceuticals and personal care products(PPCPs),11 organophosphorus flame retardants(OPFRs),and 10 antibiotic resistance genes(ARGs)in 3 reclaimed wastewater treatment plants(RWTPs)in *** composition profiles and removal efficiencies of these contaminants in RWTPs were *** results indicated that the distribution characteristics of the different types of contaminants in the three RWTPs were ***,sul2 and tris(1-chloro-2-propyl)phosphate were the dominant substances in the wastewater,and their highest concentrations were 27104 ng/L,1.4×10^(7) copies/mL and 262 ng/L,*** and sul2 were observed to be the dominant substances in the sludge,and their highest concentrations were 5419 ng/g and 3.7×10^(8) copies/g,***/anoxic/oxic system combined with the membrane bioreactor process achieved a relatively high aqueous removal of PPCPs(87%).ARGs and OPFRs were challenging to remove,with average removal rates of 6.5%and 31%,*** meta-analysis indicated that tertiary treatment processes performed better in emerging contaminant removal than secondary *** exhibited the highest mass load discharge,with 33.5 mg/d per 1000 *** and tris(2-ethylhexyl)phosphate posed high risks(risk quotient>1.0)to aquatic *** study provides essential evidence to screen high priority pollutants and develop corresponding standard in RWTPs.

The article describes 6 types of gemstones which show phenomena such as chatoyancy and *** gemstones have not been described before,either because they come from new sources,or because the phenomenon has not been seen before in the type of gemstone *** from the new sources are star garnet from the Karelia Province in Russia,and star garnet from the Jiangsu Province in *** usually does not show a cat’s eye effect,but the two described samples display a weak cat’s *** unusual white quartz from Brazil with a sharp cat’s eye is described,as well as a star sapphire with two differently coloured stars on each side of the cabochon,as well as a trapiche-type *** stones were tested with gemmological,microscopic,and advanced techniques and the results are presented.
