Perceived Injustices in Forest Policy Interventions are Causes of Forest Resources Degradation and Loss in Ghana: A Review

Forests provide diverse co-benefits, including livelihoods enhancement, poverty alleviation, and biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services such as climate mitigation. Consequently, Ghana has embraced several global, regional, national, and local forest policy interventions to safeguard its forest resources’ sustainable management. However, the forest policy interventions have not adequately addressed the co-benefits issues of forest resources leading to several forest illegalities that drive forest resources degradation and loss. These forest policies and interventions on the ground primarily favour carbon stocks enhancement and sequestration activities for carbon mitigation purposes compared to the benefits, access and rights that forest-dependent people and communities are supposed to derive from forest resources. These perceived injustices in the access and distribution of forest resources have culminated into all forms of forest illegalities driving Ghana’s forest resources into massive degradation and loss. Currently, Ghana is experiencing a 2% rate of annual deforestation and forest degradation, which translates into approximately 135,000 ha/year of forest cover loss due to anthropogenic causes. Our review is based on relevant and critical forest documents, and scientific peer-reviewed papers on Ghana’s forest policy interventions and dynamics recently published. ＜正＞Synchronous scanning fluorescence spectroscopy techniques were applied to characterization of fluorescence of selected beers. The spectra were recorded using back face and right angle geometries. The spectra of all beers studied reveal presence of similar fluorescent components. The fluorescence spectra of diluted beers exhibit a relatively intense short-wavelength emission band ascribed to amino-acids （tyrosine, tryptophan and phenylalanine）, while for neat beers broad emission bands in the long-wavelength region are observed, which may originate from vitamins of the B group. Classification of beers based on their synchronous fluorescence spectra was performed using linear discriminant analysis. Good discrimination between beers was obtained. The results presented demonstrate the capability of the fluorescence techniques to characterise beers and differentiate between their brands and varieties.

Myocardial contraction maps using tissue Doppler acceleration imaging

ObjectiveTo evaluate the tissue Doppler acceleration imaging(TDAI)data which can be used to determine the intramural site of origin of myocardial contraction in response to electrical stimulation.MethodsSix open-chest pigs with left ventricle(LV)pacing were evaluated with TDAI. An epicardial surface scanning method was used to collect short-axis views of the left ventricle. The electrode was implanted from the epicardium through the anterior free wall to an intramural position.ResultsDuring pacing, the intramural onset of myocardial acceleration occurred within 33 ms after electrical stimulation and always surrounded the embedded subendocardial end of the pacing needle. The observed short-axis diameter of the area of initial myocardial acceleration ranged from 2.9 mm to 5.0 mm(4.2±0.9 mm, n = 6). The onset of myocardial acceleration allowed appreciation of the initial intramural myocardial contraction. The spatial size and acceleration magnitude of the initial myocardial acceleration distribution were irregular.ConclusionTwo-dimensional myocardial acceleration mapping can show the intramural site of origin of myocardial contraction in response to paced electrical stimulation. The location of myocardial acceleration conformed to the site of initial electrical stimulation. The delay to the earliest regional myocardial contraction, 33 ms after paced electrical stimulation, was related to the frame rate of image acquisition. Chin Med J 2000; 113(8): 763-768

Exceedance Probability of the Standardized Precipitation-Evapotranspiration Index in the Texas High Plains

Drought is a common occurrence in many arid and semi-arid regions that can have large negative impacts on water resources and agricultural production. Since agricultural drought is affected by both water supply and demand (precipitation and evapotranspiration), it is beneficial to include both in agricultural drought monitoring. The Standardized Precipitation-Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) was found to be a suitable drought index for monitoring agricultural drought. In this study, the SPEI calculated from agro-meteorological weather stations was used to determine exceedance probabilities at five levels in the Texas High Plains. In addition, the kriging method was used to interpolate between the stations to generate spatial maps for the exceedance probabilities. No significant differences were found between stations, indicating any station should be suitable to represent the Texas High Plains. Results showed drought conditions occurred at all five probability levels during the summer growing season for this region. Although differences were not significantly different, the interpolated maps showed a trend where minor differences in the SPEI values were associated with the West-East precipitation gradient. However, there was no trend associated with the North-South air temperature gradient. A risk analysis showed that the SPEI probability values can provide policy and decision makers with additional information for better water management in the Texas High Plains.

BACKGROUND The genetic backgrounds of diabetic kidney disease(DKD)and end-stage kidney disease(ESKD)have not been fully *** To examine the individual and cumulative effects of single-nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs)previously associated with DKD on the risk for ESKD of diabetic etiology and to determine if any associations observed were specific for *** Fourteen SNPs were genotyped in hemodialyzed 136 patients with diabetic ESKD(DKD group)and 121 patients with non-diabetic ESKD(NDKD group).Patients were also re-classified on the basis of the primary cause of chronic kidney disease(CKD).The distribution of alleles was compared between diabetic and nondiabetic groups as well as between different *** weighted multilocus genetic risk score(GRS)was calculated to estimate the cumulative risk conferred by all *** GRS distribution was then compared between the DKD and NDKD groups as well as in the groups according to the primary cause of *** One SNP(rs841853;SLC2A1)showed a nominal association with DKD(P=0.048;P>0.05 after Bonferroni correction).The GRS was higher in the DKD group(0.615±0.260)than in the NDKD group(0.590±0.253),but the difference was not significant(P=0.46).The analysis of associations between GRS and individual factors did not show any significant ***,the GRS was significantly higher in patients with glomerular disease than in those with tubulointerstitial disease(P=0.014)and in those with a combined group(tubulointerstitial,vascular,and cystic and congenital disease)(P=0.018).CONCLUSION Our results suggest that selected SNPs that were previously associated with DKD may not be specific for DKD and may confer risk for CKD of different etiology,particularly those affecting renal glomeruli.

Glyphosate-Residues in Roundup-Ready Soybean Impair Daphnia magna Life-Cycle

Herbicide tolerant plants such as Roundup-Ready soybean contain residues of glyphosate herbicide. These residues are considered safe and previous animal-feeding-studies have failed to find negative effects related to such chemical residues. The present study tests 8 experimental soy- meal diets as feed in groups (each containing 20 individuals) of test-animals (D. magna). The diets have different levels of glyphosate residues and we show that animal growth, reproductive maturity and number of offspring are correlated with these chemicals. The tested soybeans are from ordinary agriculture in Iowa USA and the residues are below the regulatory limits. Despite this, clear negative effects are seen in life-long feeding. The work enhances the need for including analysis of herbicide residues in future assessment of GMO.

Numerical and Experimental Research on the Influence of the Centrifugal Pumps Rotor Damage on Their Natural Frequency Response

The paper presents process of creating a centrifugal pump rotor model in CAD environment. Modeling of a virtual object was divided into two stages, modeling of the efficient pump and the simulated failure of one of the impeller＇s blades. Comparison of the results of the resonance frequency obtained from the model analysis, with those obtained from measurements on the actual object was shown. Measurements and simulations were conducted on the pump before and after the simulated damaged of the rotor. In order to verify the model the rotor of pump was weighted and compared with the masses of the respective components obtained from the virtual object. In the second stage genuine rotor was subjected to the experimental modal analysis.
