Much attention has been given to the enhancement of photosynthesis as a strategy for the optimization of crop *** traditional plant breeding is most likely reaching a plateau,there is a timely need to accelerate improvements in photosynthetic efficiency by means of novel tools and biotechnological *** emerging field of synthetic biology offers the potential for building completely novel pathways in predictable directions and,thus,addresses the global requirements for higher yields expected to occur in the 21st ***,we discuss recent advances and current challenges of engineering improved photosynthesis in the era of synthetic biology toward optimized utilization of solar energy and carbon sources to optimize the production of food,fiber,and fuel.

In forest modeling to estimate the volume of wood,artificial intelligence has been shown to be quite effi-cient,especially using artificial neural networks(ANNs).Here we tested whether diameter at breast height(DBH)and the total plant height(Ht)of eucalyptus can be pre-dicted at the stand level using spectral bands measured by an unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)multispectral sensor and vegetation *** do so,using the data obtained by the UAV as input variables,we tested different configurations(number of hidden layers and number of neurons in each layer)of ANNs for predicting DBH and Ht at stand level for different Eucalyptus *** experimental design was randomized blocks with four replicates,with 20 trees in each experimental *** treatments comprised five Eucalyptus species(***,***,***,***-dis,and ***)and Corymbria *** and Ht for each plot at the stand level were measured seven times in separate overflights by the UAV,so that the multispectral sensor could obtain spectral bands to calculate vegetation indices(VIs).ANNs were then constructed using spectral bands and VIs as input layers,in addition to the categorical variable (species), to predict DBH and Ht at the stand level simultaneously. This report represents one of the first appli-cations of high-throughput phenotyping for plant size traits in Eucalyptus species. In general, ANNs containing three hidden layers gave better statistical performance (higher esti-mated r, lower estimated root mean squared error-RMSE) due to their greater capacity for self-learning. Among these ANNs, the best contained eight neurons in the first layer, seven in the second, and five in the third (8 − 7 − 5). The results reported here reveal the potential of using the gener-ated models to perform accurate forest inventories based on spectral bands and VIs obtained with a UAV multispectral sensor and ANNs, reducing labor and time.

Chromium is a heavy metal used for various applications such as in the manufacture of stainless steels, in chemicals for wood treatment, in tanneries, and in the refractory industry. The main problem associated with the use of chromium in these activities is the considerable volume of contaminated effluent that requires treatment, mainly due to its high mobility and toxicity in its hexavalent form. Immobilization methods arise as an efficient solution for the treatment of these wastes through converting them into inert and stable materials. The present paper aims to investigate Portland cement II’s paste properties with potassium dichromate addition in order to verify the chromium immobilization process. Analyses of moisture content, water absorption, axial compressive strength, and solubilization were done in samples at 7 and 28 days with 0%;0.5%;1.05;1.5%;2.0% and 2.5% potassium dichromate addition. The results showed the influence of this salt in cement hydration reactions, damaging the mechanical behavior and the water absorption capability of the material produced. In the solubilization test, all compositions had >99% efficiency of chromium immobilization in both ages of hydration, thus demonstrating the capability of a cementitious matrix to stabilize this metal.

A method for adsorption involving banana peel (BP) was studied to remove the pollutant acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) in aqueous medium. The results show that bioadsorbent has satisfactory maximum adsorption capacity (2.29 mg/g) for removing this analgesic and anti-inflammatory drug in aqueous solution (pH 7.0) using the Langmuir mathematical model. The tested concentrations of this pollutant were higher than the levels commonly found in the aquatic environment. This and other results suggest the BP as an alternative to ASA removal in water contaminated with pharmaceuticals pollutants.

The INB (Brazilian nuclear industries) act on the nuclear fuel cycle, from uranium mining to fuel production. In order to maintain and improve the security of the operations and the competence of the staff, continuing education and training in radiation protection cannot be neglected. This paper describes the pedagogical concept of the training in radiation protection conducted in three uranium production units: the Uranium Concentration Unit at Caetité (URA), state of Bahia, the Ore Treatment Unit (UTM), at Po?os de Caldas, state of Minas Gerais and the Unit of Heavy Minerals at Buena (UMP), state of Rio de Janeiro. It also describes a pilot training performed in 2004. The groups of workers to be trained are here characterized, as well as the profile of the trainers, the level and kind of trainings and their frequency. At the end of training, workers were subjected to a test and a grade was awarded. At URA 79 workers were trained during 9 h, the grades they obtained ranged from 7.5 to 10. At UTM; 200 workers were trained, their grades ranged from 8.8 to 10; Finally, at UMP 151 workers were trained, their grades ranged from 8.6 to 9.0. Thus a total of 180 h for 430 employees was spent training, no one flunked. Currently, the general training has been abolished since it hindered production, and the option is now to train small groups of workers when they join their Units, and also all along the year were in small classes.

Studies of coordinated compounds containing ruthenium (Ru2+ and Ru3+) have shown very effective in vitro results for the treatment of cancer and neglected diseases such as leishmaniasis. In this paper, we present the synthesis of the compound [Ru(Cl)3(H2O)2(gly)], which was characterized by spectroscopic (Ultraviolet-visibleand infrared) and thermal analysis (Thermogravimetry/Derived Thermogravimetry and Thermogravimetry/Differential Thermal Analysis). The analysis of the compound in the Ultraviolet-visibleregion showed a 290 nm band λmax (ε= 1.685 × 103 L·cm-1·mol-1), attributed to the ligand metal charge transfer (LMCT). The spectroscopy (IR) showed major vibrational bands at δa (-COO-) 1664 cm-1, δs (-COO-) 1388 cm-1, δs () 1571 cm-1 and δs (CCN) 889 cm-1. The thermal analysis by TG/DTG and TG-DTA indicated that the complex has five consecutive stages of decomposition: at 115°C (TG = 12.18%;Calculated = 11.32%) H2O (coordinating water), exothermic peaks at 230°C, 307°C, 440°C and 463°C due to oxidative decomposition of glycine, followed by the formation of RuClO residue at 665°C (TG = 41.11%;Calculated = 40.81%). The thermal characterization suggested the stoichiometry of the complex [RuCl3(H2O)2(gly)]. The antileishmanial capacity of this compound was also evaluated and the results indicated a 31% decrease in the parasitic infection of macrophages and a 1.5 to 3 fold reduction in the number of parasites per cell after treatment with 100 μg/mL of the complex. These results support the possible use of this compound as a therapeutic alternative against medical and veterinary parasites.
