The term Diabetes Mellitus (DM) comprises a group of metabolic disorders characterized by chronic hyperglycemia resulting from defects in the secretion and/or action of insulin. The Insulin therapy constitutes the preferred treatment for DM, consisting of daily subcutaneous insulin injections to control blood glucose levels. The chitosan studied for Biomedicine is a biomaterial that can be used for controlled release of drugs whose release rate can be controlled by Sodium Tripolyphosphate (TPP), which is an ionic cross linker of the chitosan. Present study, therefore, was aimed to develop and evaluate membranes of chitosan and chitosan cross linked by TPP for use in controlled release of insulin system, with the purpose of obtaining an alternative to the injectable administration of this drug. The developed membranes were characterized by the techniques of Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX), High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Evaluation of Cell Viability of Macrophages (MTT). With the FTIR technique the interaction between chitosan, tripolyphosphate and insulin was identified. Chemical elements present in chitosan, insulin and sodium tripolyphosphate membranes were detected by EDX technique. By SEM technique, the changes in the morphology of the membrane containing insulin, with the presence of granular particles of varying sizes, could be observed when compared to pure chitosan. With HPLC assay insulin was identified and it was shown that it gets separated from chitosan membrane even when the membrane was cross linked by the TPP, though at a reduced rate. The crosslinking agent was effective to control the rate of insulin release. The biocompatibility of the prepared membranes was confirmed by cell viability of macrophages using the MTT assay. The developed membranes, therefore, have potential for use as a biomaterial in controlled release systems for insulin.

Colletotrichum species are the most important and widespread form of decay affecting mango fruit *** this study,Colletotrichum species associated with fruit anthracnose isolated from mango in northeastern Brazil were subject to molecular and morphological *** partial sequences of the glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase gene of 143 Colletotrichum isolates was amplified,as an initial measure of genetic diversity.A subset of 47 isolates,selected to represent the range of genetic diversity and geographic origin,were further sequenced using the partial actin,β-tubulin,calmodulin,glutamine synthetase genes and rDNA-ITS *** multilocus sequence analysis,together with a critical examination of the phenotypic characters,revealed four previously described species(Colletotrichum asianum,Colletotrichum fructicola,Colletotrichum tropicale and Colletotrichum karstii)and one new *** new species is introduced as Colletotrichum dianesei and formally described,illustrated and compared with similar *** *** and *** have previously been reported from mango,while the other species represent the first report associated with the mango fruits *** species are reported for the first time associated with the mango fruits in Brazil.

巴西目前有37个转基因品种获准商业化,转基因性状包括除草剂抗性、昆虫和病毒抗性。《巴西生物安全法》对科研及市场产品研发过程中如何安全运用遗传工程技术建立了指导准则,该法设立了新的机构并让高校与政府机构参与共同制定生物安全指导方针、进行风险评估和行政监督。根据该法,巴西设立了"国家生物安全理事会"(CNBS),并重组了"国家生物安全技术委员会"(CTNBio)。CTNBio负责建立生物安全指导准则,并向所有从事转基因生物相关机构颁发"生物安全许可证"(CQB)。《生物安全法》将所有违反其准则的行为或不作为均视为违法。在注册与监督机构(OERF)确定制裁标准、规定罚金数额并提交给联邦政府后,即可对违法行为实施制裁。除此之外,巴西有关转基因生物的重要法规还有第8078号法,该条款赋予国内所有消费者知情权。依据该法律,巴西司法部建立了食品标识体系,规定人体食用或饲料用食品或食品成分若含有超过1%的转基因生物成分,必须在商品标签上注明并附转基因标志(正中间含有字母T的黄色三角形)。不可否认,在这部新的《生物安全法》颁布实施后,遗传工程技术在巴西农业中的应用呈现快速增长。毫无疑问,在各机构的协作参与下,生物安全立法框架中的法律、规定和指导准则联合作用,让投资者、科研工作者、公私营机构及其他所有巴西农业的利益相关者重拾信心。

Drought stress is major abiotic stress that affects soybean ***,it is widely desirable that soybean becomes more tolerant to *** provide insights into regulatory mechanisms of the stress response,we compared the global gene expression profiles from leaves of two soybean genotypes that display different responses to water-deficit(BR 16 and Embrapa 48,drought-sensitive and droughttolerant,respectively).After the RNA-seq analysis,a total of 5335 down-regulated and 3170 up-regulated genes were identified in the *** the other hand,the number of genes differentially expressed was markedly lower in the Embrapa 48,355 up-regulated and 471 down-regulated ***,induction and expression of protein kinases and transcription factors indicated signaling cascades involved in the drought ***,the results suggest that the metabolism of pectin is differently modulated in response to drought stress and may play a role in the soybean defense mechanism against *** occurs via an increase of the cell wall plasticity and crosslink,which contributed to a higher hydraulic conductance(Kf)and relative water content(RWC%).The drought-tolerance mechanism of the Embrapa 48 genotype involves remodeling of the cell wall and increase of the hydraulic conductance to the maintenance of cell turgor and metabolic processes,resulting in the highest leaf RWC,photosynthetic rate(A),transpiration(E)and carboxylation(A/Ci).Thus,we concluded that the cell wall adjustment under drought is important for a more efficient water use which promoted a more active photosynthetic metabolism,maintaining higher plant growth under drought stress.

Wounds are a serious public health problem in our country. Access to effective, low-cost treatment is still far from the reality for many patients leading to a chronic and serious condition. They interfere in the quality of life of these individuals who isolate themselves socially constrained by the appearance of their wounds. The report shows the case of a patient with type II diabetes mellitus, with chronic wounds in lymphedema in the lower limbs who was treated with the Scar Acceleration Methodology associated with Complex Decongestive Therapy, leading to an improvement in her social participation and quality of life.

Introduction: Due to the growth of the elderly population, there is a notable lack of preparation among family members and society to face the challenges of this new reality, resulting in an increasing demand for homes for the aged (HA). It is necessary to understand how the impairment of physical health, mental health and the level of depression can affect the functional capacity of the institutionalized elderly who live in homes for the aged. Objective: To describe the correlation between depression and functionality of elderly people who live in homes for the aged. Method: A cross-sectional, descriptive study with 70 elderly people of both sexes, aged 60 years or older, who live in HA in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Result: It was verified that the female gender was predominant in the HA consulted. The majority of elderly live in HA voluntarily 48.6% and that 41.43% did not complete elementary school. The majority of the elderly 81.43% had the ability to perform basic activities of daily living and the elderly 52.86% had normal psychological pictures. The worsening of the depressive picture is associated with the worse functioning of elderly who live in HA (p Conclusion: Depression is a factor that is associated with the functional capacity of the institutionalized elderly. The worse the functional level of the institutionalized elderly, the greater the chances of presenting a depressive state.

Preparation of Reference Material for Proficiency Test for Enumeration of Coliforms in Cheese Matrix

It is widely accepted that quantitative reference materials (RM), are indispensable tools for verification of the precision and accuracy of analytical measurements. The RM can be used by food microbiology laboratories, as part of their quality assurance programmes, to achieve their quality control. In Brazil, Anvisa RDC No. 12/01 specifies the enumeration of coliforms as one of the parameters for evaluating cheese quality. The aim of this study was to produce a quantitative RM for proficiency testing (PT) for use in the testing of enumeration of coliforms in cheese matrixes. A sample of an ultra-filtered cheese with a coliforms count of <3.0 MPN/g and a total n? of viable aerobes of 1.2 × 103 CFU/g was used as the matrix to produce the RM. The ultra-filtered cheese matrix was distributed in flasks, contaminated with a specific concentration of an Escherichia coli strain and submitted to freeze-drying. Sucrose was used as the cryo-protector. The RM produced was considered sufficiently homogeneous and stable at ≤ ?70?C during the entire study period (348 days). The material was also considered sufficiently stable at 4?C for six days, but instable at 30?C and 35?C for the same period. At ?20?C the RM was sufficiently stable for 161 days. It was concluded that the material showed all the necessary requirements for a quality RM to be used as PT items and could be transported to the laboratories taking part in a PT at up to 4?C for up to 6 days, since the results indicated maintenance of the cell concentrations during this period. This is the first study to describe a methodology for producing RM containing coliforms in a cheese matrix.
