Sugarcane mosaic virus(SCMV)is the main etiological agent of sugarcane mosaic disease,which affects sugarcane and other grass *** the extensive characterization of quantitative trait loci controlling resistance to SCMV in maize,the genetic basis of this trait in sugarcane is largely ***,a genome-wide association study was performed and machine learning coupled with feature selection was used for genomic prediction of resistance to SCMV in a diverse sugarcane *** single-nucleotide polymorphisms(SNps)explained up to 29.9%of the observed phenotypic variance and a 73-SNp set predicted resistance with high accuracy,precision,recall,and F1 scores(the harmonic mean of precision and recall).Both marker sets were validated in additional sugarcane genotypes,in which the SNps explained up to 23.6%of the phenotypic variation and predicted resistance with a maximum accuracy of 69.1%.Synteny analyses suggested that the gene responsible for the majority of SCMV resistance in maize is absent in sugarcane,explaining why this major resistance source has not been identified in this ***,using sugarcane RNA-Seq data,markers associated with resistance to SCMV were annotated,and a gene coexpression network was constructed to identify the predicted biological processes involved in *** network allowed the identification of candidate resistance genes and confirmed the involvement of stress responses,photosynthesis,and the regulation of transcription and translation in resistance to *** results provide a practical marker-assisted breeding approach for sugarcane and identify target genes for future studies of SCMV resistance.

Recurrent missense mutation of GDF5 (p.R438L) causes proximal symphalangism in a British family

proximal symphalangism(SYM1B)(OMIM 615298) is an autosomal dominant developmental disorder affecting joint fusion. It is characterized by variable fusions of the proximal interphalangeal joints of the hands,typically of the ring and little finger,with the thumb typically being spared. SYM1 is frequently associated with coalition of tarsal bones and conductive hearing loss. Molecular studies have identified two possible genetic aetiologies for this syndrome,NOG and GDF5. We herein present a British caucasian family with SYM1 B caused by a mutation of the GDF5 gene. A mother and her three children presented to the orthopaedic outpatient department predominantly for feet related problems. All patients had multiple tarsal coalitions and hand involvement in the form of either brachydactyly or symphalangism of the proximal and middle phalanx of the little fingers. Genetic testing in the eldest child and his mother identified a heterozygous missense mutation in GDF5 c.1313G>T(p.R438L),thereby establishing SYM1 B as the cause of the orthopaedic problems in this family. There were no mutations identified in the NOG gene. This report highlights the importance of thorough history taking,including a three generation family history,and detailed clinical examination of children with fixed planovalgus feet and other family members to detect rare skeletal dysplasia conditions causing pain and deformity,and provides details of the spectrum of problems associated with SYM1 B.

Dogs have been under strong artificial selection as a consequence of their relationship with man. Differences between breeds are evident that could be reflected in seminal characteristics. The present study was to evaluate differences in sperm head morphometry between seven well-defined breeds of dog： the British Bulldog, Chihuahua, German Shepherd, Labrador Retriever, Spanish Mastiff, Staffordshire Terrier, and Valencian Rat Hunting dog. Semen samples were obtained by masturbation and smears stained with Diff-Quik. Morphometric analysis （CASA-Morph） produced four size and four shape parameters. Length, Ellipticity, and Elongation showed higher differences between breeds. MANOVA revealed differences among all breeds. Considering the whole dataset, principal component analysis （pCA） showed that pC1 was related to head shape and pC2 to size. procluster analysis showed the British Bulldog to be the most isolated breed, followed by the German Shepherd. The pCA breed by breed showed the Chihuahua, Labrador Retriever, Spanish Mastiff, and Staffordshire Terrier to have pC1 related to shape and pC2 to size, whereas the British Bulldog, Valencia Rat Hunting dog, and German Shepherd had pC1 related to size and pC2 to shape. The dendrogram for cluster groupings and the distance between them showed the British Bulldog to be separated from the rest of the breeds. Future work on dog semen must take into account the large differences in the breeds＇ sperm characteristics. The results provide a base for future work on phylogenetic and evolutionary studies of dogs, based on their seminal characteristics.

Clinical significance of donor-specific human leukocyte antigen antibodies in liver transplantation

Antibody-mediated rejection(AMR) caused by donorspecific anti-human leukocyte antigen antibodies(DSA) is widely accepted to be a risk factor for decreased graft survival after kidney transplantation. This entity also plays a pathogenic role in other solid organ transplants as it appears to be an increasingly common cause of heart graft dysfunction and an emerging issue in lung transplantation. In contrast, the liver appears relatively resistant to DSA-mediated injury. This "immune-tolerance" liver property has been sustained by a low rate of liver graft loss in patients with preformed DSA and by the intrinsic liver characteristics that favor the absorption and elimination of DSA; however, alloantibody-mediated adverse consequences are increasingly being recognized, and several cases of acute AMR after ABO-compatible liver transplant(LT) have been reported. Furthermore, the availability of new solid-phase assays, allowing the detection of low titers of DSA and the refinement of objective diagnostic criteria for AMR in solid organ transplants and particularly in LT, have improved the recognition and management of this entity. A cost-effective strategy of DSA monitoring, avoidance of class Ⅱ human leukocyte antigen mismatching, judicious immunosuppression attached to a higher level of clinical suspicion of AMR, particularly in cases unresponsive to conventional antirejection therapy, can allow a rational approach to this threat.

Epidemiology and outcomes of acute liver failure in Australia

BACKGROUND Acute liver failure (ALF) is a life-threatening syndrome with varying aetiologies requiring complex care and multidisciplinary management. Its changing incidence, aetiology and outcomes over the last 16 years in the Australian context remain uncertain. AIM To describe the changing incidence, aetiology and outcomes of ALF in South Eastern Australia. METHODS The database of the Victorian Liver Transplant Unit was interrogated to identify all cases of ALF in adults (> 16 years) in adults hospitalised between January 2002 and December 2017. Overall, 169 patients meeting criteria for ALF were identified. Demographics, aetiology of ALF, rates of transplantation and outcomes were collected for all patients. Transplant free survival and overall survival (OS) were assessed based on survival to discharge from hospital. Results were compared to data from a historical cohort from the same unit from 1988- 2001. RESULTS paracetamol was the most common aetiology of acute liver failure, accounting for 50% of cases, with an increased incidence compared with the historical cohort (p = 0.046). Viral hepatitis and non-paracetamol drug or toxin induced liver injury accounted for 15% and 10% of cases respectively. Transplant free survival (TFS) improved significantly compared to the historical cohort (52% vs 38%, p = 0.032). TFS was highest in paracetamol toxicity with spontaneous recovery in 72% of cases compared to 31% of non-paracetamol ALF (p patients were waitlisted for emergency liver transplantation. Nine of these died while waiting for an organ to become available. Forty-two patients (25%) underwent emergency liver transplantation with a 1, 3 and 5 year survival of 81%, 78% and 72% respectively. CONCLUSION paracetamol toxicity is the most common aetiology of ALF in South-Eastern Australia with a rising incidence over 30 years. TFS has improved, however it remains low in non-paracetamol ALF.

The SeridóBelt,at the extreme northeast of Brazil,is one of the several Neoproterozoic mobile belts related to the Brasiliano/pan-African Orogeny in Western *** lithostratigraphy of the SeridóBelt comprises basal quartzites and metaconglomerates(Equador Formation)overlain by hornblende-bearing paragneisses,calc-silicate rocks and marbles(Jucurutu Formation)and biotiteschists(SeridóFormation).We investigated the sedimentary provenance of these rocks based on an integration of compiled whole-rock geochemistry,Sm-Nd isotopes,U-pb detrital zircon ages and a new set of whole-rock trace elements *** Formation quartzites have major and trace elements patterns that resemble cratonic sandstones,with a typical felsic provenance consistent with the isotopic composition of plutonic Archean to paleoproterozoic basement *** proxies suggest that these rocks were deposited in fresh waters under anoxic conditions and moderate to intense weathering conditions(CIA=58–79).A shift in provenance led to an increase in intermediate-mafic sources during the deposition of the Jucurutu and Seridó*** elements from rock types in these units are nearly identical,yet they differ on the contents of some high field-strength elements(e.g.,Sc,V and Ni),which are higher in the SeridóFormation than average *** proxies show similar depositional environments,with brackish to marine conditions for the Jucurutu and Seridóformations under anoxic to euxinic *** conditions are consistently lower in the Jucurutu Formation(CIA=58–66)in comparison with the SeridóFormation(CIA=60–88).Compiled U-pb data suggest maximum depositional ages of 633±11 Ma and 633±6 Ma for Jucurutu and Seridóformations,respectively,suggesting deposition following the ca.645–635 Ma Marinoan *** compared the geochemistry of the SeridóFormation schists with currently exposed basement rocks and showed a strong affinity with Neoproterozoic arc-related

The fluid dynamics analysis on industrial,mixed-flow grain dryers with fixed bed using computational techniques is necessary to assist the design of such equipment contributing to cost reduction in the dryer projects and agricultural drying operations that involve the production of grains in the *** study presents a Computational Fluid Dynamic(CFD)solution for air flow analysis in an industrial *** air flow at the inlet and outlet of the dryer was investigated using the k-ωSST turbulence *** dryer region with soybean was considered as a laminar porous medium flow in the permanent and isothermal regime,having for the model a simplified geometry with the tower considered as a porous medium and the air inlet and outlet as a turbulent fluid *** flow was treated with a permanent and isothermal *** flow and pressures were used according to design *** validate the k-ωSST turbulence model,the velocity profile at the dryer inlet was obtained experimentally,which presented results with good agreement between the numerical and the experimental *** model obtained satisfactory results of the computational validation of the air flow in the dryer with good convergence requiring a minimum of computational effort,being suitable for the simulation of industrial-scale dryers,as to its air flow through a tower,operating with fixed bed soybean in the steady and isothermal regime.

Identifying migrant remains in South Texas:policy and practice

In 2012, Texas surpassed Arizona in migrant deaths. The majority of deaths occurred in the Rio Grande Valley, specifically in Brooks County, Texas. Brooks County is one of the poorest in the state and was overwhelmed with deaths, without appropriate resources to follow the state laws pertaining to the investigation of unidentified human remains. Until 2013, most remains that were not immediately identified were buried without collecting DNA samples and the location of burials was not recorded. Our paper outlines the difficulties searching for these burials, the struggles of the families of the missing, and the collaborative approaches to facilitating identifications in South Texas. Community outreach combined with geophysical surveys guide which cemeteries are in need of exhumations. Once ceme-teries are surveyed, archaeological methods are employed to exhume remains and docu-ment burials. Remains are taken to the Forensic Anthropology Center at Texas State for processing, analysis, and identification efforts. Undergraduate and graduate students clean remains and wash clothing and personal *** skeletal analysis, all information regarding the remains, including photographs of per-sonal effects, are uploaded to the National Missing and Unidentified persons System (NamUs) and a DNA sample is submitted to the University of North Texas for inclusion in the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) DNA database. However, CODIS lacks DNA family reference samples from many families of the missing due to families living outside the US or because they do not feel comfortable providing a DNA sample in the presence of law enforcement. Therefore, it is necessary to work with non-governmental organizations who specialize in collecting missing persons reports and DNA samples from the families of the missing. Working collaboratively with multiple agencies, identification of migrant remains is possible.

3D extrusion of multi-biomaterial lattices using an environmentally informed workflow

The conventional building material palette has been proven limited in terms of adaptability to our current environmental challenges. Innovations in computational design and digital manufacturing have supported the broadening of biomaterial applications as an alternative. While biomaterials are characteristically responsive to stimuli such as temperature and humidity, their unpredictable behaviour is a hurdle to standardization and architectural utilisation. To examine the nexus between material formulation, computation and manufacturing, multi-biomaterial lattice structures were produced through an environmentally informed workflow. Customized biomaterial development resulted in three candidate biopolymer blends with varying levels of hydro-responsiveness and transparency. The computational strategy included a machine learning clustering algorithm to customise results and dictate material distribution outputs. To test the workflow, environmental data of solar radiation exposure and solar heat gain from a specific location was used to inform the material deposition via pneumatic extrusion for the design and digital fabrication of a deformation-controlled prototype of 350 mm × 350 mm. This led to a series of multi-biomaterial wall panel components that can be applied at architectural scale. In future, these techniques can support the incorporation of living elements to be embedded within the built environment for truly animate architecture.
