Accuracy and responses of genomic selection on key traits in apple breeding

The application of genomic selection in fruit tree crops is expected to enhance breeding eficiency by increasing prediction accuracy,increasing selection intensity and decreasing generation *** objectives of this study were to assess the accuracy of prediction and selection response in commercial apple breeding programmes for key *** training population comprised 977 individuals derived from 20 pedigreed fllsib *** phenotypic data were available on 10 traits related to productivity and fruit external appearance and genotypic data for 7829 SNPs obtained with an llumina 20K SNP *** these data,a genome-wide prediction model was built and subsequently used to calculate genomic breeding values of five application fllsib *** application families had genotypes at 364 SNPs from a dedicated 512 SNP array,and these genotypic data were extended to the high-density level by *** five families were phenotyped for 1 year and their phenotypes were compared to the predicted breeding *** of genomic prediction across the 10 traits reached a maximum value of 0.5 and had a median value of *** accuracies were strongly affected by the phenotypic distribution and heritability of *** the largest family,significant selection response was observed for traits with high heritability and symmetric phenotypic *** that showed non-significant response often had reduced and skewed phenotypic variation or low *** the five application families the accuracies were uncorrelated to the degree of relatedness to the training *** results underline the potential of genomic prediction to accelerate breeding progress in outbred fruit tree crops that still need to overcome long generation intervals and extensive phenotyping costs.

Reconfiguring wireless environments via intelligent surfaces for 6G: reflection, modulation, and security

The reconfigurable intelligent surface(RIS) has been recognized as an essential enabling technology for sixth-generation(6G) mobile communication networks. An RIS comprises a large number of small and low-cost reflecting elements whose parameters can be dynamically adjusted with a programmable *** of these elements can effectively reflect a phase-shifted version of the incident electromagnetic wave. By configuring the wave phases in real time, the propagation environment of the information-bearing signals can be dynamically manipulated to enhance communication reliability, boost transmission rate, expand cellular coverage, and strengthen communication security. In this study, we provide an overview on RIS-assisted wireless communications. Specifically, we elaborate on the state-of-the-art enabling techniques for the RIS technology as well as their corresponding substantial benefits from the perspectives of RIS reflection and RIS modulation. With these benefits, we envision the integration of RISs into emerging applications for6G. In addition, communication security is of unprecedented importance in future 6G networks with ubiquitous wireless services in multifarious verticals and areas. We highlight potential contributions of RISs to physical-layer security, in terms of secrecy rate and secrecy outage probability, exemplified by a typical case study from both theoretical and numerical aspects. Finally, we discuss challenges and opportunities on the deployment of RISs in practice to motivate future research.

Elastic period of vibration calculated experimentally in buildings hosting permanent GPS stations

During the earthquake in Emilia（Italy） of 2012,ca.30 permanent GPS stations were in operation within a radius of about 100 km from the epicenter,each equipped with an antenna rigidly fixed to the host building and sampling the GPS signal at a high rate（〉 1 Hz）.From the recording of the GPS measurements,the instantaneous displacements s（t） in the NorthSouth and East-West directions of the phase centers of the single GPS antennas at each permanent station during the most important seismic sequences were calculated in kinematic ***,for each of the two displacements considered as two distinct external forces,the elastic response spectra of the building were determined and from them the two periods of vibration T along two orthogonal directions coinciding with the walls of the building were *** experimentally obtained periods of vibration were compared with those inferable from the technical *** this way,a sufficiently large sample was obtained per building type,geometry（square,rectangular,regular or irregular planimetry）,height（from a minimum of 4 to a maximum of 20 m） and materials（masonry,reinforced concrete,etc.）.From the computational point of view,the study confirmed that GPS is an emerging tool for monitoring dynamic displacements and the experimentally estimated value of T is always lower than the one estimated with the formulae reported in the *** limitations of the study lie in the impossibility to choose a priori the geometry and/or structural type of the building hosting the GPS station.

Turning of aluminum metal matrix composites： influence of the reinforcement and the cutting condition on the surface layer of the workpiece

Aluminum metal matrix composites （Al-mmcs） are difficult to machine. The reinforcement of aluminum using ceramic particles accelerates tool wear. moreover, demanded machining accuracies or properties of the surface layer are difficult to achieve. In the present study, the effect of silicon carbide reinforcement particles on the surface layer of the workpiece was investigated using multiple cutting conditions for dry turning. Three differently reinforced Al-mmcs regarding the volume percent-age （17% and 30%） and the particle size （0.6 μm and 3 μm） and their non-reinforced matrix were considered as the workpiece materials. The reinforcement and the cutting condition affect the results of turning. A greater particle volume percent improves the surface roughness and decreases the tensile stress in the surface. The smaller particle size caused a lower tensile stress in the surface. A general effect of the particle size on the workpiece roughness can not be concluded. The most important cutting parameter for the surface layer of the workpiece is the feed. Greater feeds decrease the tensile stress in the surface, but deteriorate the surface quality.

Rapid screening for citrus canker resistance employing pathogen-associated molecular pattern-triggered immunity responses

citrus canker,caused by the bacterial pathogen Xanthomonas citri ***(Xcc),has been attributed to millions of dollars in loss or damage to commercial citrus crops in subtropical production areas of the *** identification of resistant plants is one of the most effective methods of disease management,the ability to screen for resistant seedlings plays a key role in the production of a long-term solution to ***,an inverse correlation between reactive oxygen species(ROS)production by the plant and the ability of Xcc to grow and form lesions on infected plants is *** on this information,a novel screening method that can rapidly identify citrus seedlings that are less susceptible to early infection by Xcc was devised by measuring ROS accumulation triggered by a 22-amino acid sequence of the conserved N-terminal part of flagellin(flg22)from *** ***(Xcc-flg22).In addition to limiting disease symptoms,ROS production was also correlated with the expression of basal defense-related genes such as the pattern recognition receptors LRR8 and FLS2,the leucine-rich repeat receptor-like protein RLP12,and the defense-related gene PR1,indicating an important role for pathogen-associated molecular pattern-triggered immunity(PTI)in determining resistance to citrus ***,the differential expression patterns observed amongst the citrus seedlings demonstrated the existence of genetic variations in the PTI response among citrus species/varieties.

candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus(Las)is a fastidious,phloem-restricted pathogen with a significantly reduced genome,and attacks all citrus species with no immune cultivars documented to *** other plant bacterial pathogens,Las deploys effector proteins into the organelles of plant cells,such as mitochondria and chloroplasts to manipulate host immunity and *** organelles are responsible for the synthesis of adenosine triphosphate(ATP)and have a critical role in plant immune signaling during hydrogen peroxide(H2O2)*** this study,we investigated H2O2 and ATP accumulation in relation to citrus huanglongbing(HLB)in addition to revealing the expression profiles of genes critical for the production and detoxification of H2O2 and ATP *** also found that as ATP and H2O2 concentrations increased in the leaf,so did the severity of the HLB symptoms,a trend that remained consistent among the four different citrus varieties ***,the upregulation of ATP synthase,a key enzyme for energy conversion,may contribute to the accumulation of ATP in infected tissues,whereas downregulation of the H2O2 detoxification system may cause oxidative damage to plant macromolecules and cell *** may explain the cause of some of the HLB symptoms such as chlorosis or leaf *** findings in this study highlight important molecular and physiological mechanisms involved in the host plants’response to Las infection and provide new targets for interrupting the disease cycle.

Discovery of higher-order topological insulators using the spin Hall conductivity as a topology signature

The discovery and realization of topological insulators,a phase of matter which hosts metallic boundary states when the ddimension insulating bulk is confined to(d−1)-dimensions,led to several potential ***,it was shown that protected topological states can manifest in(d−2)-dimensions,such as hinge and corner states for three-and two-dimensional systems,*** nontrivial materials are named higher-order topological insulators(HOTIs).Here we show a connection between spin Hall effect and HOTIs using a combination of ab initio calculations and tight-binding *** model demonstrates how a non-zero bulk midgap spin Hall conductivity(SHc)emerges within the HOTI *** this,we performed high-throughput density functional theory calculations to find unknown HOTIs,using the SHc as a *** calculated the SHc of 693 insulators resulting in seven stable two-dimensional *** work guides novel experimental and theoretical advances towards higher-order topological insulator realization and applications.

In many engineering applications,it is important to determine both effective rock properties and the rock behavior which are representative for the problem’s in situ *** this purpose,rock samples are usually extracted from the ground and brought to the laboratory to perform laboratory experiments such as consolidated undrained(cU)triaxial *** low permeable geomaterials such as clay shales,core extraction,handling,storage,and specimen preparation can lead to a reduction in the degree of saturation and the effective stress state in the specimen prior to testing remains *** changes in structure and the effect of capillary pressure can alter the properties of the specimen and affect the reliability of the test results.A careful testing procedure including back-saturation,consolidation and adequate shearing of the specimen,however,can overcome these *** substantial effort has been devoted during the past decades to the establishment of a testing procedure for low permeable geomaterials,no consistent protocol can be *** a special focus on cU tests on Opalinus clay,this study gives a review of the theoretical concepts necessary for planning and validating the results during the individual testing stages(saturation,consolidation,and shearing).The discussed tests protocol is further applied to a series of specimens of Opalinus clay to illustrate its applicability and highlight the key aspects.

Amino-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles for cO_(2) capture

cO_(2)accumulation is inducing an effect of global *** using solid sorbents is proving as an effective strategy for cO_(2)capture and *** aim of this study was to develop amino-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles by depositing various amines through coprecipitation or *** characteristics were studied through SEm,BET and XRD analyses,evidencing coarse particles with low crystallinity and surface areas of 100–150 m2 g−1,while FT-IR confirmed cO_(2)interacting with *** load of functional group,particles stability,and cO_(2)sorption capacity were assessed through elemental and thermogravimetric *** was found that loads of functional groups ranging from 1.6 to 6.1 wt.%.were deposited,and most samples showed sound stability up to 100°*** capacities were in the range 0.2–1.5 g gNH2−1,the highest being 1.46 g gNH2−1 forɛ-aminocaproic *** sample also exhibited good recyclability,with a performance drop of 11%after many ***_(2)uptake decreased with increasing temperature in the range 25–45°c,suggesting a chemical bond between cO_(2)and *** functionalized particles could thus be an interesting solution for cO_(2)capture and utilization thanks to fast kinetics,recyclability,and ease of separation.

Utilizing anaerobic metabolisms for the production of biotechnologically relevant products presents potential advantages,such as increased yields and reduced energy ***,lower energy dissipation may indicate that certain reactions are operating closer to their thermodynamic *** stoichiometric analyses and genetic modifications are frequently employed in metabolic engineering,the use of thermodynamic tools to evaluate the feasibility of planned interventions is less *** this study,we propose a novel metabolic engineering strategy to achieve an efficient anaerobic production of poly-(R)-3-hydroxybutyrate(PHB)in the model organism Escherichia *** approach involves re-routing of two-thirds of the glycolytic flux through non-oxidative glycolysis and coupling PHB synthesis with NADH *** complemented our stoichiometric analysis with various thermodynamic approaches to assess the feasibility and the bottlenecks in the proposed engineered *** to our calculations,the main thermodynamic bottleneck are the reactions catalyzed by the acetoacetyl-coAβ-ketothiolase(Ec 2.***.1.9)and the acetoacetyl-coA reductase(Ec 1.***.1.36).Furthermore,we calculated thermodynamically consistent sets of kinetic parameters to determine the enzyme amounts required for sustaining the conversion *** the case of the engineered conversion route,the protein pool necessary to sustain the desired fluxes could account for 20%of the whole cell dry weight.
