Femoral glands of male lizards produce waxy secretions that are involved in inter- and intraspecific chemical communication. The main components of these secretions are proteins and lipids, the latter having been extensively studied and already associated to male quality. On the opposite, the composition and role of proteins are nea.l. unknown, the only ava.l.ble information coming from few studies on iguanids. These studies got the conclusion that proteins might have a communicative function, nota.l. they could signal individual identity. A generalization of these findings requires the extension of protein analysis to other lizard families, and the primary detection of some patterns of individual variability. Using the common wa.l.lizard as a model species, the protein fraction of the femoral pore secretions was investigated to provide the first characterization of this component in a.l.certid lizard and to explore its source of variability, as a first step to support the hypothesized communicative role. Samples of proteins from femoral secretions were collected from 6 Italian populations and subjected to 1-dimensional electrophoresis. The binary vector of the band presence/absence was used to define the individual profiles. Protein fraction is found to have a structured pattern, with both an individual and a population component. Although the former supports the potential communicative role of proteins, the latter offers a double interpretation, phylogenetic or environmental, even though the phylogenetic effect seems more likely given the climatic resemblance of the considered sites. Further studies are necessary to shed light on both these issues.

Intelligent speed adaptation for visibility technology affects drivers’speed selection along curves with sight limitations

Sight obstructions along road curves can lead to a crash if the driver is not a.l. to stop the vehicle in *** is a particular issue along curves with limited ava.l.ble sight,where speed management is necessary to avoid unsafe situations(e.g.,driving off the road or invading the other traffic lane).To solve this issue,we proposed a novel intelligent speed adaptation(ISA)system for visibility,ca.l.d V-ISA(intelligent speed adaptation for visibility).It estimates the real-time safe speed limits based on the preva.l.ng sight conditions.V-ISA comes with three variants with specific feedback modalities(1)visual and(2)auditory information,and(3)direct intervention to assume control over the vehicle ***,we investigated the efficiency of each of the three V-ISA variants on driving speed choice and lateral behavioural response along road curves with limited and unsafe ava.l.ble sight distances,using a driving *** also considered curve road geometry(curve direction:rightward ***).Sixty active drivers were recruited for the *** half of them(experimental group)tested the three V-ISA variants(and a V-ISA off condition),the other half always drove with the V-ISA off(validation group).We used a.l.near mixed-effect model to evaluate the influence of V-ISA on driver *** V-ISA variants were efficient at reducing speeds at entrance points,with no discernible negative impact on driver lateral *** rightward curves,the V-ISA intervening variant appeared to be the most effective at adapting to sight *** of the current study implies that V-ISA might assist drivers to adjust their operating speed as per preva.l.ng sight conditions and,consequently,esta.l.shes safer driving conditions.

Effect of drug therapies on self-reported chemosensory outcomes after COVID-19

Objective:The aim of this study was to assess the relative efficacy of medications used following severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2(SARS-CoV-2)infection on self-reported alterations in taste and/or smell ***:Seven hundred and fourteen persons with self-reported postcoronavirus disease 2019(post-COVID-19)chemosensory disorders were persona.l. interviewed regarding specific medications they were administered following the acute phase of the *** dependent measure—self-reported total recovery of chemosensory symptoms—was subjected to stepwise logistic *** predictors included demographic and clinical varia.l.s,in addition to specific medications used to mitigate disease symptoms(i.e.,systemic corticosteroids,oseltamivir,vitamin C,ibuprofen,hydroxychloroquine,azithromycin,ivermectin,nitazoxanide,anticoagulants,and zinc).Results:The median time between COVID-19 symptom onset and the interviews was 81 days(interquartile range:60-104).Of the 714 subjects,249(34.9%)reported total recovery of their chemosensory function;437(61.2%)had at least one treatment since the beginning of the *** and those with more comorbidities had undergone more *** recovery rates of the treated and nontreated groups did not differ ***,respondents who had used nitazoxanide tended to have a higher rate of self-reported taste or smell *** who took oral zinc were less likely to ***:No medication employed during the first months after SARS-CoV-2 infection had a clear positive effect on returning self-reported smell or taste function to normal,although nitrazoxide trended in a positive *** zinc had a negative effect on the reported recovery of these senses.

为探究稀土离子掺杂对Ca_(3)Ti_(2)O_(7)物理性能的调控,采用固相反应法制备了Sm^(3+)掺杂的(Ca_(1-x)Sm_(x))_(3)Ti_(2)O_(7)(x=0,0.02,0.04)陶瓷样品,通过XRD、XPS、紫外-可见光吸收光谱以及第一性原理计算等方法对样品的晶体结构、光学性能、电学性能和磁学性能进行分析.结果表明:随着Sm^(3+)含量的增加,(Ca_(1-x)Sm_(x))_(3)Ti_(2)O_(7)的晶胞参数逐渐增大.Sm^(3+)掺杂导致氧空位减少,因此样品的漏电流随着Sm^(3+)掺杂量的增加而减小.同时,随着Sm^(3+)掺杂量的增加,样品的光学带隙呈现增大趋势.此外,第一性原理研究表明,Sm^(3+)掺杂可在体系中诱导出磁性能,进一步丰富了该材料的物理性能.

Increased CO2 levels during the First Half of Incubation at High Altitude Modifies Embryonic Development of Fertile leghorn Breeder Eggs

The exchange of oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) within an incubator has a significant impact on embryonic development (ED) and hatching processes. This study examines the influence of non-ventilation (NV) conditions during the first ten days of incubation at high altitudes on leghorn hens hatching eggs. Five hundred four hatching eggs were equa.l. divided into three treatment groups and placed in twelve incubators (R = 4). The first group was subjected to standard ventilated conditions (V) during the setting phase. The ventilation inlet holes of the remaining incubators in the NV treatments were closed with either micropore (M) or polypropylene (P) tape, referred to as NVM and NVP groups, respectively. These two different airtight settings were intended to a.l.w for a gradual rise in CO2 natura.l. generated by the embryos. Results indicate that carbon dioxide concentration gradua.l. increased during the first half of incubation, reaching 1.42% in the NVM group and 1.20% in the NVP group, while the V condition group remained at 0.15%. From 10 days of incubation onwards, normal V conditions were restored in a.l.incubators. The highest hatchability of fertile eggs (HFE) was shown by the NVP group (55.7%), followed by the V (52.6%) and NVM (38.6%) groups. The NVP group showed a greater yolk-free body mass (YFBM) from 10 days of incubation until the hatch basket transfer. NV conditions during the first 10 days of incubation at high altitude produced higher YFBM with gradua.l. decreasing yolk sac mass. In comparison to the NVM and V conditions, the particular NVP condition showed a beneficial impact on the quality of hatched chicks. Sustaining NVP condition (1.2% of CO2) throughout the first half of incubation at high altitude generated the optimal environment in the incubator ensuring the best hatchability results.
