Aluminum （AI） toxicity in plants is one of the primary constraints in crop production. Al3＋, the most toxic form of Al, is released into soil under acidic conditions and causes extensive damage to plants, especially in the roots. In rice, Al tolerance requires the ASR5 gene, but the molecular function of ASR5 has remained unknown. Here, we perform genome-wide analyses to identify ASR5-dependent Al-responsive genes in rice. Based on ASRS_RNAi silencing in plants, a global transcriptome analysis identified a total of 961 genes that were responsive to Al treatment in wildtype rice roots. Of these genes, 909 did not respond to Al in the ASR5_RNAi plants, indicating a central role for ASR5 in Al-responsive gene expression. Under normal conditions, without Al treatment, the ASR5 RNAi plants expressed 1.756 genes differentially compared to the wild-type plants, and 446 of these genes responded to AI treatment in the wild-type plants. Chromatin immunoprecipitation followed by deep sequencing identified 104 putative target genes that were directly regulated by ASR5 binding to their promoters, including the STAR1 gene, which encodes an ABC transporter required for AI tolerance. Motif analysis of the binding peak sequences revealed the binding motif for ASR5, which was confirmed via in vitro DNA-binding assays using the STAR1 promoter. These results demonstrate that ASR5 acts as a key transcription factor that is essential for AI-responsive gene expression and Al tolerance in rice.

Starants: A New Model for Human Networks

In this paper, we will explain the relevance of the starant graphs, graphs created by us in the year of 2002. They were basically circulant graphs with a star graph that connects to all the vertices of the circulant graphs from inside of them, but they did not exist as a separate object of study in the year of 2002, as for all we knew. We now know that they can be used to model even social networking interactions, and they do that job better than any other graph we could be trying to use there. With the development of our mathematical tools, lots of conclusions will be made much more believable and therefore will become much more likely to get support from the relevant industries when attached to new queries.

Evaluation of the 5-HTTLPR and 5-HTTVNTR Polymorphisms in the Serotonin Transporter Gene in Women with Postpartum Depression

Objective: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the association between the 5-HTTLPR and 5-HTTVNTR polymorphisms in the serotonin transporter gene (SLC6A4) in Brazilian women with diagnosed postpartum depression (PPD) and the presence of depressive symptoms. Method: The cohort consisted of 128 white women who were charac-terized based on skin color and morphological characteristics. The Beck Depression Inventory was used to diagnose PPD and to score the depressive symptoms. The 5-HTTLPR and 5-HTTVNTR polymorphisms were analyzed by PCR-based methods. Results: No association was observed between the PPD diagnosis and either the 5-HTTLPR (p = 0.48) or the 5-HTTVNTR (p = 0.77) polymorphism. When the polymorphisms were analyzed together with haplotype data, the analyses demonstrated that women carriers of the L-12/L-12 diplotype have lower Beck Depression Inventory scores than women carrying other diplotypes (p = 0.04). Discussion: Few studies have investigated the association of SLC6A4 polymorphisms with PPD, and the role of 5-HTTLPR and 5-HTTVNTR polymorphisms in PPD susceptibility has not been established to date. Therefore, our findings link the haplotypes of these two variants with depression symptoms, thereby contributing to our understanding of PPD susceptibility.

AIM:To verify the methylation status of CDH1, DAPK, COX2, hMLH1 and CDKN2A genes and to evaluate their association with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)-cagA+ and Epstein Barr virus (EBV) infections in gastric ***: Methylation-specific PCR (MSP) assay was performed in 89 primary gastric carcinomas (intestinal and diffuse types). Microsatellite instability (MSI) analysis was performed using the BAT26 primer set and PCR products were analyzed with the ABI PRISM 3100 Genetic Analyzer using Genescan 3.7 software (Applied Biosystems). Detection of H. pylori and genotyping were performed by PCR, using specifi c primers for ureaseC and cagA genes. The presence of EBV was assessed by in situ hybridization. Statistical analyses were performed using the χ2 or Fisher's exact ***: The most frequent hypermethylated gene was COX-2 (63.5%) followed by DAPK (55.7%), CDH1 (51%), CDKN2A (36%) and hMLH1 (30.3%). Intestinal and diffuse adenocarcinomas showed different methylation profiles and there was an association between methylation of E-CDH1 and H. pylori-cagA+ in the intestinal adenocarcinoma type. MSI was correlated with hMLH1 methylation. There was an inverse correlation between DAPK hypermethylation and ***: We found a strong association between CDH1 methylation and H. pylori-cagA+ in intestinal-type gastric cancer, association of MSI and better prognosis and an heterogeneous COX-2 overexpression.
