Over the past decade,dramatic progress has been made in dental research areas involving laser *** photobiomodulatory effect of laser light regulates the behavior of periodontal tissues and promotes damaged tissues to heal ***,photobiomodulation therapy(PBmT),a non-invasive treatment,when applied in orthodontics,contributes to alleviating pain and reducing inflammation induced by orthodontic forces,along with improving tissue healing ***,PBmT is attracting more attention as a possible approach to prevent the incidence of orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption(OIIRR)during orthodontic treatment(OT)due to its capacity to modulate inflammatory,apoptotic,and anti-antioxidant ***,a systematic review revealed that PBmT has only a moderate grade of evidence-based effectiveness during orthodontic tooth movement(OTm)in relation to OIIRR,casting doubt on its beneficial *** PBmT-assisted orthodontics,delivering sufficient energy to the tooth root to achieve optimal stimulation is challenging due to the exponential attenuation of light penetration in periodontal *** penetration of light to the root surface is another crucial unknown *** the penetration depth and distribution of light in periodontal tissues are ***,advanced approaches specific to orthodontic application of PBmT need to be established to overcome these *** review explores possibilities for improving the application and effectiveness of PBmT during *** aim was to investigate the current evidence related to the underlying mechanisms of action of PBmT on various periodontal tissues and cells,with a special focus on immunomodulatory effects during OTm.

Kinetic modeling of Esterification Reaction of Free Fatty Acids Present in macauba Oil Using a Cationic Resin as Catalyst

The cost of raw materials has the largest contribution to the final price of biodiesel produced by traditional routes, currently adopted in most industrial scale processes. That contribution comes from the need to use edible and noble oils, with low acidity, such as soybean oil. This work proposes＇the use of macauba oil, a vegetable oil in focus in the State of minas Gerais, Brazil, in which the current extractive yield generates a raw material with high acidity, therefore, not suitable to be used in biodiesel production. To make it technically feasible, a cationic exchange resin, the Purolite CT275DR, was used as a catalyst for esterification reaction with samples of macauba oil, aiming to reduce its acidity. The resin can be reused, regenerated and easily removed from the reaction product, reducing costs with catalyst and purification stages. As a result of this work, in a sample of oil with an initial acidity of about 10% m/m were achieved acidity reductions up to 97% by using cationic resins as catalyst, demonstrating its potential use in the oil pretreatrnent step. Additionally, the data collected during all the analysis made it possible to define the chemical kinetic of the esterification reaction.

The Aging Waistline: Impact of the Geriatric Obesity Epidemic on an Urban Emergency Department: Original Communication

Purpose: Reviews adult emergency department (ED) visits for patients age 65 and older during one calendar year;determine the prevalence of weight classifications;identifies trends between BmI and discharge/admitting diagnoses, vital signs, and severity ***: The electronic medical records system and data from the ED billing service was reviewed for an urban academic institution with an annual volume of 125,000 for patients age > 65. Using a random number table, a retrospective cohort of 328 elderly patients was selected for review, representing a convenience sample of 2.6% of elderly ED visits. Body mass Index (BmI) was calculated, using the Center for Disease Control (CDC) formula with underweight (- 24.9), overweight (25 - 29.9), and obese (≥30). Results: The majority of the cohort in this study was African-American and Hispanic (60% and 27% respectively), and there were a higher percentage of females than males (60% and 40% respectively). Approximately 29% of the patients were classified as normal weight, 35% classified as overweight, and 36% as obese. The older the patient, the more likely that patient belonged to a lower weight classification (p 0.01). Those presenting with neurological, pulmonary or gastrointestinal complaints were more likely to be of a higher weight classification (p 0.05). Patients who were hypertensive on arrival to the ED were more likely to be in a higher weight classification (p 0.01). Conclusion: Those patients with a higher weight classification had a strong correlation with selected abnormal vital signs and disease presentations. EDs are important sources of care for the elderly. EDs can serve as a previously untapped resource for screening and early referral exercise programs aimed at improving physical function/ functional status and quality of life in the elderly patient population.

macro and microvascular disease are the main cause of morbi-mortality in type 1 diabetes(T1Dm).Although there is a clear association between endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerosis in type 2 diabetes,a cause-effect relationship is less clear in T1 *** endothelial dysfunction(ED) precedes atherosclerosis,it is not clear weather,in recent onset T1 Dm,it may progress to clinical macrovascular ***,endothelial dysfunction may either be reversed spontaneously or in response to intensive glycemic control,long-term exercise training and use of ***,long-term and post-prandial hyperglycemia as well as duration of diabetes and microalbuminuria are all conditions associated with ED in T1 *** pathogenesis of endothelial dysfunction is closely related to ***(P)H oxidase over activity induces excessive superoxide production inside the mitochondrial oxidative chain of endothelial cells,thus reducing nitric oxide bioavailability and resulting in peroxynitrite formation,a potent oxidant ***,oxidative stress also uncouples endothelial nitric oxide synthase,which becomes dysfunctional,inducing formation of *** important mechanisms are the activation of both the polyol and protein kinase C pathways as well as the presence of advanced glycation *** studies are needed to evaluate the potential clinical applicability of endothelial dysfunction as a marker for early vascular complications in T1 Dm.

Impact of Radical Prostatectomy on Urinary Incontinence, Erectile Dysfunction and General Quality of Life

The aims of this study were to evaluate the impact of radical retropubic prostatectomy on patient’s quality of life. Patients undergoing radical retropubic prostatectomy were followed for six months after surgery. We used quality of life questionnaires to study specific urinary symptoms and general health. WHOQOL-Bref (World Health Organization for Quality of Life) questionnaire was used to evaluate general health aspects, ICIQ-SF (International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Short Form), OABq (Overactive Bladder) and IPSS (International Prostatic Symptom Score) to evaluate incontinence and overactive bladder symptoms and male Sexual Quotient to assess postoperative sexual dysfunctions. The questionnaires were scheduled before surgery, one, three and six months after surgery. Regarding the OAB-q scores, I-PSS and WHOQOL-Bref (physical, psychological, environmental, general, Question 1 and Question 2), symptoms worsened after one month if compared to preoperative symptoms. After six months, the WHOQOL’s social domain, the ICIQ-SF and QS-m scores remained worse if compared to preoperative evaluation. The incidence of sexual dysfunctions after six months was 0.83. In conclusion, urinary incontinence affects patient’s quality of life with gradual recovery after six months postoperatively. The social domain was the most common aspect affected by urinary incontinence. Our sexual dysfunction incidence was higher than other studies and this fact could be explained by many surgeries having been done by residents.

Oral PTCTS (Particulated Transialidase) Removes Serum microparticles and Decreases Inflammation in Atherosclerotic Plaques of Rabbits

Background: Previous studies showed that atherosclerotic plaque vulnerability was related with microparticles (mPs)-vesicles larger than 100 nm, which released mmP9 collagenase. In our previous study, intramuscular injection of a new drug (PTCTS) normalized oxidized LDL serum levels and reduced rabbit atherosclerosis. Now, we studied administration of oral PTCTS in order to clarify anti-atherosclerotic mechanism of action, analyzing if the treatment removed mPs containing ox-LDL and mycoplasma pneumoniae antigens and improved the immune response. methods: We compared two groups of rabbits. Control group (CG, n = 6)—1% cholesterol enriched diet for 12 weeks;Treated group (TG, n = 8)—1% cholesterol enriched diet for 12 weeks with administration of PTCTS (400 μl/day) during the last 6 weeks of diet. The animals had their blood collected, in three different phases of the protocol before being fed with hypercholesterolemic diet, before being treated with water or PTCTS and at the moment of sacrifice. The serum was submitted to immunofluorescence technique to evaluate the quantity of microparticles marked with antibodies against mycoplasma pneumoniae and ox-LDL. A fragment of aorta was submitted to immunohistochemical detection of antigens from mmP9, ox-LDL, NF-κB and IL-1β. Results: PTCTS showed significant reduction in mmP-9 (P = 0.001) and a tendency of reducing IL-1β (P = 0.09) in the aortic plaques compared with CG. In the serum, PTCTS was able to remove microparticles containing antigen of ox-LDL (P = 0.004) and mycoplasma pneumoniae (P β and mycoplasma, as well as a better stabilization of the atheromatous plaque by reducing levels of mmP-9, avoiding plaque rupture, without causing mortality or toxicity.
