Coronavirus disease 2019(COvID-19),which is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2(SARS-Cov-2),has affected millions of people *** was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization in March *** hyperinflammatory response to the entry of SARS-Cov-2 into the host through angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 is the result of a“cytokine storm”and the high oxidative stress responsible for the associated *** only respiratory symptoms are reported,but gastrointestinal symptoms(diarrhea,vomiting,and nausea)and liver abnormalities(high levels of aspartate aminotransferase,alanine aminotransferase transaminases,and bilirubin)are observed in at least 30%of *** food intake and a delay in medical services may lead to malnutrition,which increases mortality and poor *** review provides some strategies to identify malnutrition and establishes nutritional approaches for the management of COvID-19 and liver injury,taking energy and nutrient requirements and their impact on the immune response into *** roles of certain phytochemicals in the prevention of the disease or as promising target drugs in the treatment of this disease are also considered.

Biliary complications associated with weight loss,cholelithiasis and choledocholithiasis

Biliary complications like cholelithiasis and choledocholithiasis are more common in bariatric surgery patients due to obesity and rapid weight *** with a body mass index>40 face an eightfold risk of developing *** surgery,especially after laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass(LRYGB),30%of patients develop biliary disease due to rapid weight *** aim of this review is to analyze the main biliary complications that occur after bariatric surgery and its management.A review of the literature was conducted mainly from 2010 up to 2023 with regard to biliary complications associated with bariatric patients in SciELO,PubMed,and *** undergoing LRYGB have a higher incidence(14.5%)of symptomatic calculi post-surgery compared to those undergoing laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy at 4.1%.Key biliary complications within 6 to 12 months post-surgery include:Cholelithiasis:36%;Biliary colic/dyskinesia:3.86%;Acute cholecystitis:0.98%-18.1%;Chronic cholecystitis:70.2%;Choledocholithiasis:0.2%-5.7%and Pancreatitis:0.46%-9.4%.Surgeons need to be aware of these complications and consider surgical treatments based on patient symptoms to enhance their quality of life.

Study of the Conversion of Postconsumer Polystyrene on CeO₂/HZSM-5 Type Materials

The catalytic conversion of polystyrene (PS) was studied in the presence of the materials type HZSM-5, CeO2, 10% CeO2/HZSM-5 and 20% CeO2/HZSM-5, which were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and nitrogen adsorption at 77K. The catalytic tests were performed via thermogravimetric analysis (TG) at heating rates of 5, 10 and 20˚C min−1 in a temperature range from 30˚C to 900˚C. For the tests, a ratio of 30% by mass of each catalytic material mixed with PS was used and the activation energy of the degradation process was determined by the vyazovkin method. The obtained results showed that the addition of the catalyst to the PS in general reduced its degradation temperature. The 10% CeO2/HZSM-5 catalyst showed greater efficiency, as it resulted in lower activation energy for PS degradation. Thus, the combination of CeO2 with HZSM-5 resulted in materials with potential for application in the catalytic degradation of polystyrene and the results indicate that the production of a composite material can be a good strategy to generate an increase in catalytic activity and a decrease in energy process activation.

Prevalence of risk factors for cardiovascular and kidney disease in Brazilian healthy preschool children

AIM To investigate the prevalence of nutritional parameters of risk for cardiovascular disease(CvD) and kidney diseases in healthy preschool *** This is an observational cross-sectional study with 60 healthy children, of both genders, aged two to six years old and 56 mothers, in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Preschool children and their families with regular activities at public schools were invited to paticipate in the study. The following characteristics were assessed: Socio-demographic condictions, clinical health, anthropometric, biochemical, lifestyle and data on food consumption. The 56 healthy children were divided into two groups, overweight(C1) and non-overweight(C2), as well as their mothers, respectively, in overweight(M1) and non-overweight(M2). Nutritional status was defined according to results obtained through the Anthro? Software for nutritional analysis. RESULTS Thirty-five children were male, with mean age of 4.44 ± 1.0 years old. Eighty-nine percent of them were eutrophic, 86.7% were sedentary and they had five meals a day. Body mass index(BMI) for age and total cholesterol(TC) was higher on C1(P = 0.0001) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-c) was higher on C2. Mothers were 32.5 ± 7.1 years old, mostly married and employed. Eighty-six percent of them were sedentary and 62.5% were overweight with BMI = 26.38 ± 5.07 kg/m2. Eighteen percent of the overweight mothers had isolated total hypercholesterolemia(TC levels elevated) and 12.5% had low HDL-c levels. The present study showed an association between overweight and obesity during the preschool years and the correspondent mothers' nutritional status of overweight and obesity(OR = 4.96; 95%CI: 0.558-44.17). Role of negative pressure wound therapy in total hip and knee arthroplasty

Negative-pressure wound therapy(NPWT) has been a successful modality of wound management which is in widespread use in several surgical fields. The main mechanisms of action thought to play a role in enhancing wound healing and preventing surgical site infection are macrodeformation and microdeformation of the wound bed, fluid removal, and stabilization of the wound environment. Due to the devastating consequences of infection in the setting of joint arthroplasty, there has been some interest in the use of NPWT following total hip arthroplasty and total knee arthroplasty. However, there is still a scarcity of data reporting on the use of NPWT within this field and most studies are limited by small sample sizes, high variability of clinical settings and end-points. There is little evidence to support the use of NPWT as an adjunctive treatment for surgical wound drainage, and for this reason surgical intervention should not be delayed when indicated. The prophylactic use of NPWT after arthroplasty in patients that are at high risk for postoperative wound drainage appears to have the strongest clinical evidence. Several clinical trialsincluding single-use NPWT devices for this purpose are currently in progress and this may soon be incorporated in clinical guidelines as a mean to prevent periprosthetic joint infections.

Chronic stress sensitizes rats to pancreatitis induced by cerulein:Role of TNF-α

AIM:To investigate chronic stress as a susceptibility factor for developing pancreatitis,as well as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) as a putative ***:Rat pancreatic acini were used to analyze the influence of TNF-α on submaximal (50 pmol/L) cholecystokinin (CCK) *** restraint (4 h every day for 21 d) was used to evaluate the effects of submaximal (0.2 μg/kg per hour) cerulein stimulation on chronically stressed ***:In vitro exposure of pancreatic acini toTNF-α disorganized the actin *** was further increased by TNF-α/CCK treatment,which additionally reduced amylase secretion,and increased trypsin and nuclear factor-κB activities in a protein-kinase-C δ and ε-dependent ***-α/CCK also enhanced caspases' activity and lactate dehydrogenase release,induced ATP loss,and augmented the ADP/ATP *** vivo,rats under chronic restraint exhibited elevated serum and pancreatic TNF-α ***,pancreatic,and lung inflammatory parameters,as well as caspases' activity in pancreatic and lung tissue,were substantially enhanced in stressed/cerulein-treated rats,which also experienced tissues' ATP loss and greater ADP/ATP *** examination revealed that stressed/cerulein-treated animals developed abundant pancreatic and lung edema,hemorrhage and leukocyte infiltrate,and pancreatic *** severity was greatly decreased by treating animals with an anti-TNF-αantibody,which diminished all inflammatory parameters,histopathological scores,and apoptotic/necrotic markers in stressed/cerulein-treated ***:In rats,chronic stress increases susceptibility for developing pancreatitis,which involves TNF-α sensitization of pancreatic acinar cells to undergo injury by physiological cerulein stimulation.
