Long-term monitoring reveals the effect of precipitation and silviculture on nothofagus regeneration in northern Patagonia mixed forests

Background Tree regeneration is a key component of resilience because it promotes post-disturbance recovery of forests. northwestern Patagonia from Argentina is occupied by nothofagus alpina（na）, n. obliqua（no）, and n. dombeyi（nd） forests that grow along an intense precipitation gradient, managed throughout shelterwood silvicultural system by technicians of the Lanin natural Reserve. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of seeding cuttings over the dynamics of nothofagus mixed forests across landscape（precipitation gradient） based mainly on the composition and abundance of tree regeneration, permanent sampling plots and generalized linear mixed models. In particular, we analysed:（i） the structure of sexual and asexual regeneration during nd > 20 years after harvest（the dynamics of managed forests）, and（ii） the structure of sexual regeneration in primary and managed forests after > 20 years of harvest（the effect of silviculture）.Results nd was the most abundant species in the regeneration of managed forests during all periods in both sites despite its lower contribution to the adult cohort. During the 10–20 years period after harvest, the humid site exhibited higher regeneration density than the mesic site(120,000 and 6000 ind ha-1, respectively), and it decreased afterwards. The number of established regeneration（> 2 m height） was lower for na in the mesic site and for no in the humid site(0 and 57 ind ha-1, respectively). However, in comparison to no, na showed a higher number of sprouted stumps and sprouts per stump, and a higher sprout height in the mesic site. no exhibited higher sprout mortality in the humid site. Interactive Effect of GA_3 ,n and P Ameliorate Growth, Seed and Fibre Yield by Enhancing Photosynthetic Capacity and Carbonic Anhydrase Activity of Linseed: A Dual Purpose Crop

Linseed （Linum usitatissimum L.） is an important dual-purpose, industrial crop. Its seeds are used for the extraction of oil and stem for fibres. However, the production of linseed is not going parallel with the increasing demand of its products. The present work was carried out with an aim to find out whether exogenous application of gibberellic acid （GA3） with or without graded levels of nitrogen （n） and phosphorus （P） could improve the performance of three linseed genotypes Parvati, Shekhar and Shubhra together with minimizing the costly fertilizer input and losses. Four combinations of n and P, viz., 0 mg n＋0 mg P kg-1 soil （n0P0）, n13.4 P4.46 , n26.8P8.94 and n40.2P13.4 were constituted. Half dose of each combination was applied basally at the time of sowing and remaining half dose was given at 40 d after sowing （DAS） as foliar spray along with 10-6 mol L-1 GA3 . Prior to sowing, the seeds of each linseed genotype were grouped in to two, one group of seeds was soaked in 0 mol L-1 GA3 （control） and the other group was soaked in 10-6 M GA3 solution, each for 8 hours. Treatments were comprised of （i） 0 mol L-1 GA3＋n0P0 （T0 , control）, （ii） 10-6 mol L-1 GA3 ＋ n13.4P4.46 （T1）, （iii） 10-6 mol L-1 GA 3 ＋n 26.8 P 8.94 （T2） and （iv） 10-6 mol L-1 GA3＋n40.2P13.4 （T3）. The crop performance was assessed in terms of growth, physiological and biochemical parameters at 60 and 75 DAS and yield attributes at harvest （175 DAS）. The results showed a parallel increase in most of the parameters with increasing levels of n and P. However, application of 10-6 mol L-1 GA3 in association with n26.8P8.94 proved best, it enhanced seed yield, oil yield and fibre yield by 83.3, 97.3 and 78.7%, respectively accompanied with increase in net photosynthetic rate, carbonic anhydrase activity and dry matter accumulation. Driving factors of tree biomass and soil carbon pool in xerophytic forests of northeastern Argentina

Background The conversion of forests into agricultural lands can be a threat because the forests carbon stored could be a source of emissions. The capacity to improve the predictions on the consequences of land use change depends on the identification of factors that influence carbon pools. We investigated the key driving factors of tree biomass and soil carbon pools in xerophytic forests in northeastern Argentina. Based on analyses of forest structure variables and abiotic factors (topography and soil properties) from 18 mature forests, we evaluated carbon pools using uniand multivariate (redundancy analysis) methods. Results The total carbon pool was estimated at 102.4 ± 24.0 Mg ha−1. Soil organic carbon storage is the single largest carbon pool relative to tree biomass, representing 73.1% of total carbon. Tree canopy cover and basal area were positively correlated with biomass carbon pool (r = 0.77 and r = 0.73, p ng to be significant drivers of carbon storage in this compartment. Slope, soil clay content and cation-exchange capacity had a better explanation for the variability in soil carbon pools, and all showed significant positive correlations with soil carbon pools (r = 0.64, 0.60 and 0.50;p n stock than alfisols. Conclusions The relevance of our study stems from a dearth of information on carbon pools and their drivers in xerophytic forests, and in particular, the importance of this ecosystems’ type for Argentina, because they cover 81.9% of native forest area. Basal area and tree canopy cover exert a strong effect on the carbon pool in tree biomass but not in the soil. The results suggests that there is a potentially major SOC accumulation in forests located in slightly sloping areas and soils with higher topsoil clay content, such as vertisols. This could provide an important reference for implementing forestry carbon sink projects.

Mirizzi syndrome:History,current knowledge and proposal of a simplified classification

Chronic complications of symptomatic gallstone disease, such as Mirizzi syndrome, are rare in Western developed countries with an incidence of less than 1% a year. The importance and implications of this condition are related to their associated and potentially serious surgical complications such as bile duct injury, and to its modern management when encountered during laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The pathophysiological process leading to the subtypes of Mirizzi syndrome has been explained by means of a pressure ulcer caused by an impacted gallstone at the gallbladder infundibulum, leading to an inflammatory response causing first external obstruction of the bile duct, and eventually eroding into the bile duct and evolving to a cholecystocholedochal or cholecystohepatic fistula. This article reviews the life of Pablo Luis Mirizzi, describes the earlier and later descriptions of Mirizzi syndrome, discusses the pathophysiological process leading to the development of these uncommon fistulas, reviews the current diagnostic modalities and surgical approaches and finally proposes a simplified classification for Mirizzi syndrome intended to standardize the reports on this condition and to eventually develop a consensual surgical approach to this unexpected and seriously dangerous condition.

2D Pauli Equation with Hulthén Potential in the Presence of Aharonov-Bohm Effect

The 2D Pauli equation with Hulthen potential for spin-1/2 particle in the presence of Aharonov-Bohm （AB） field is solved analytically, on the assumption that an effective approximation is used for the centrifugal term. Singular and regular solutions of the problem are obtained. It is shown that the AB field lifts the degeneracy of the energy levels. The range of the flux parameter for which singular solutions are allowed is modified compared to the pure AB case. When the screening parameter vanishes, it is shown that the obtained energy spectrum becomes the same as that of the Aharonov-Bohm Coulomb problem.
