Risk factors for running-related injuries:An umbrella systematic review

Purpose:This umbrella systematic review(SR) of SRs and meta-analysis seeks to comprehensively synthesize existing literature to identify and consolidate the diverse range of risk factors contributing to running-related injuries(RRIs).Methods:Systematic searches were conducted on June 28,2023,across Web of Science,SPORTDiscus,Scopus,PubMed,and Cochrane *** included SRs,whether accompanied by meta-analyses or not,that focused on investigating risk factors for RRIs within observational *** methodological quality of the SRs was evaluated using the Assessing the Methodological Quality of Systematic Reviews Ⅱ.To assess the extent of overlap across reviews,the corrected covered area metric was ***:from 1509 records retrieved,13 SRs were *** degree of overlap between SRs was low(4%),and quality varied from critically low(n=8) to low(n=5).Two hundred seven outcomes assessed in 148 primary studies were identified as being associated with the occurrence of *** effect sizes of the associations for which risk measures were reported(n=131) were classified as large(n=30,23%),medium(n=38,29%),small(n=48,37%) or no effect(n=15,11%).Running/training characteristics,health and lifestyle factors,along with morphological and biomechanical aspects,exhibit large effect sizes in increasing the risk for ***:Drawing from the outcomes of the low-quality SRs and associations with large effect sizes,our findings indicate that running/training characteristics and health and lifestyle factors,as well as morphological and biomechanical aspects,are all implicated in elevating the risk of RRIs,emphasizing the multifactorial basis of injury incidence in *** the low quality and heterogeneity of SR,individual findings warrant cautious interpretation.

Prospects for bone marrow cell therapy in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis：how far are we from a clinical treatment？

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis（ALS） is a fatal neurodegenerative disease that causes progressive muscular atrophy and death within 3–5 years after its *** the significant advances in knowledge of ALS pathology,no effective treatment is ***,it is imperative to search for new alternatives to treat *** therapy,especially using bone-marrow cells,has showed to be very useful to protect the neural tissue in different brain disease or traumatic *** ALS,most published results show beneficial effects of the use bone marrow cells,especially mesenchymal stromal ***,until now,the best outcome extends animal＇s lifespan by only a few *** is essential to continue the search for a really effective therapy,testing different cells,routes and time-windows of *** the mechanisms that initiate and spread the degenerative process is also important to find out an effective ***,we discussed here some progresses that have been made using bone-marrow cell therapy as a therapeutic tool for ALS.

The clinical decision to control risk factors for cardiovascular disease （CVD） in the elderly takes the followings into consideration：（1） the elderly life expectancy; （2） the elderly biological age and functional capacity; （3） the role of cardiovascular disease in the elderly group; （4） the prevalence of risk factors in the elderly; and （5） The effectiveness of treatment of risk factors in the elderly. A large number of studies showed the efficacy of secondary and primary prevention of dyslipidemia in the elderly. However, the only trial that included patients over 80 years was the Heart Protection Study （HPS）. Statins are considered the first line therapy for lowering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol （LDL-C）. Because lifestyle changes are very difficult to achieve, doctors in general tend to prescribe many drugs to control cardiovascular risk factors. However, healthy food consumption remains a cornerstone in primary and secondary cardiovascular prevention and should be implemented by everyone.

The Use of Secondary Grape Biomass in Beef Cattle Nutrition on Carcass Characteristics, Quality and Shelf Life of Meat

We determined whether the inclusion of 100 g/kg dry matter of grape pomace silage (GPS) and grape pomace bran (GPB) as substitutes for other traditional fiber sources in the diet of steers (Charolais x Nellore) would improve carcass characteristics, meat quality and composition, and shelf life. Twenty-four animals (248 ± 19.32 kg of initial body weight) were fed a high concentrate diet for 121 days. Carcass characteristics were measured, and the longissimus dorsi muscle was analyzed for fatty acid (fA) profile and composition. The meat was sliced and stored in air-permeable packages for 10 days. On each sampling day (d 1, 3, 7, and 10), oxidative stability, bacterial load, lipid and protein oxidation, and staining were analyzed. The experimental diets influenced the pH of cold carcasses only. The GPS group had a higher pH than the control. The GPS and GPB groups showed improved oxidant status (i.e., lower lipid peroxidation and concentrations of reactive oxygen species were in the meat of both groups than in control). On the first day of storage, the antioxidant enzyme glutathione S-transferase activity was more significant in the meat of the GPS and GPB groups than in the control. The bacterial loads in the meat were attenuated by GPS inclusion;there were lower total coliform counts and a trend toward lower counts for enterobacteria in the control group. The diets altered the fA profile of the meat;i.e., the GPB diet allowed for a more significant amount of the n-6 omegas in the meat, while the GPS diet showed a tendency for a more significant amount of n-6 and 9 omegas. Both diets (GPS and GPB) increased the amounts of long-chain fAs. The GPS diet decreased saturated fA levels. We conclude that the dietary treatments GPS and GPB are a promising alternative to maintain meat quality standards throughout in real-world retail conditions. Niche partitioning is a widespread ecological strategy within trophic guilds,ensuring the coexistence of sympatric species by reducing interspecific *** isotope analysis of carbon and nitrogen and isotopic niche metrics(width and overlap)are used as a proxy to investigate niche partitioning among species of a *** our study,we investigated if niche partitioning was an ecological mechanism contributing to the coexistence of granivorous birds from the same geographic region along time,employing an isotopic *** sampled and isotopically analyzed(δ^(13)C andδ^(15)N values)wing feathers from 58 specimens of granivorous birds collected between 1900 and 1966 in southeastern *** grouped birds according to the main habitat type used by them(forest:Cyanoloxia brissonii,Leptotila and Leptotila verreauxi;and grassland:Columbina squammata and Sicalis flaveola).We used the Isotopic Richness(IRic)metric to measure the isotopic niche width and the Isotopic Similarity(ISim)and Isotopic Nestedness(INes)metrics to measure the niche overlap between groups and *** results of low isotopic niche overlap suggest that common granivorous birds had a clear niche partitioning in southeastern Brazil in the late past,especially through foraging in distinct habitat types(forest and grassland;ISim=0.1,INes=0.2).Niche overlaps in almost all species-by-species comparisons were low(ISim≤0.3,INes≤0.4),except between *** and ***(ISim=0.6,INes=1.0).These results suggest that these birds,belonging to the same trophic guild,coexisted through niche and resource *** being considered a plastic trophic guild,the isotopic niche partitioning among granivorous birds indicates that each of these species uses a set of specific resources and *** raises an ecological concern about the homogenization of landscapes across the Neotropics,oversimplifying food resources and habitats to granivorous birds.

The quantification of carbon storage in vegetation biomass is a crucial factor in the estimation and mitigation of CO2 ***,arid and semi-arid regions are considered an important carbon ***,they have received limited attention and,therefore,it should be a priority to develop tools to quantify biomass at the local and regional *** plant variables,such as stem diameter and crown area,were reported to be good predictors of individual plant ***-level variables,such as plant cover and mean height,are also easy-to-measure estimators of above-ground biomass(AGB)in dry *** this study,we estimated the AGB in semi-arid woody vegetation in Northeast Patagonia,*** evaluated whether the AGB at the stand level can be estimated based on plant cover and to what extent the estimation accuracy can be improved by the inclusion of other field-measured structure *** also evaluated whether remote sensing technologies can be used to reliably estimate and map the regional mean *** this purpose,we analyzed the relationships between field-measured woody vegetation structure variables and AGB as well as LANDSAT TM-derived *** obtained a model-based ratio estimate of regional mean AGB and its standard *** plant cover allowed us to obtain a reliable estimation of local AGB,and no better fit was attained by the inclusion of other structure *** stand-level plant cover ranged between 18.7%and 95.2%and AGB between about 2.0 and 70.8 Mg/hm^(2).AGB based on total plant cover was well estimated from LANDSAT TM bands 2 and 3,which facilitated a model-based ratio estimate of the regional mean AGB(approximately 12.0 Mg/hm^(2))and its sampling error(about 30.0%).The mean AGB of woody vegetation can greatly contribute to carbon storage in semi-arid ***,plant cover estimation by remote sensing images could be used to obtain regional estimates and map biomass,as well as to assess and monitor the i

Posterior partially edentulous jaws, planning a rehabilitation with dental implants

AIM: To discuss important characteristics of the useof dental implants in posterior quadrants and the rehabilitation planning. METHODS: An electronic search of English articles was conducted on MEDLINE(PubM ed) from 1990 up to the period of March 2014. The key terms were dental implants and posterior jaws, dental implants/treatment planning and posterior maxilla, and dental implants/treatment planning and posterior mandible. No exclusion criteria were used for the initial search. Clinical trials, randomized and non randomized studies, classical and comparative studies, multicenter studies, in vitro and in vivo studies, case reports, longitudinal studies and reviews of the literature were included in this review. RESULTS: One hundred and fifty-two articles met the inclusion criteria of treatment planning of dental implants in posterior jaw and were read in their entirety. The selected articles were categorized with respect to their context on space for restoration, anatomic considerations(bone quantity and density), radiographic techniques, implant selection(number, position, diameter and surface), tilted and pterygoid implants, short implants, occlusal considerations, and success rates of implants placed in the posterior region. The results derived from the review process were described under several different topic headings to give readers a clear overview of the literature. In general, it was observed that the use of dental implants in posterior region requires a careful treatment plan. It is important that the practitioner has knowledge about the theme to evaluate the treatment parameters. CONCLUSION: The use of implants to restore the posterior arch presents many challenges and requires a detailed treatment planning.

Liver preservation prior to transplantation: Past, present, and future

Since Dr. Thomas Starzl performed the first series of successful liver transplants(LTs), important advances have been made in immunosuppression, operative techniques, and postoperative care. In 1988, Belzer's group reported the first successful LT using the University of Wisconsin preservation solution(UW).Since then, UW has replaced EuroCollins solution and allowed prolonged and safer preservation of liver, kidney, and pancreas allografts, thus contributing to the improvement of transplant outcomes. Although UW is still considered the standard of care in the United States and in several countries worldwide, a recent meta-analysis revealed similar LT outcomes among UW, Celsior solution, and the Institut Georges Lopez-1 preservation solution, which were slightly superior to those obtained with histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate preservation *** preservation has been recently developed, and liver allografts are preserved mainly through the following methods: hypothermic machine perfusion, normothermic machine perfusion, and subnormothermic machine perfusion. Their use has the potential advantage of improving clinical results in LT involving extended criteria donor allografts. Although associated with increased costs, techniques employing machine perfusion of liver allografts have been considered clinically feasible. This editorial focuses on recent advances and future perspectives in liver allograft preservation.
