The Burden of Hospitalisations for Herpes Zoster Ophtalmicus in Spain (1997-2008)

Purpose: This epidemiological retrospective survey aims to provide population-based estimates of the burden of hospitalisation for herpes zoster ophthalmicus in Spain during a twelve-year period (1997-2008). Methods: All hospital discharges and deaths related to herpes zoster ophthalmicus in patients older than 30 years old from 1997 to 2008 in Spain were obtained. Differences in proportions were assessed by the Chi-square test. ANOVA was used for multiple comparisons. Poisson regression was used to assess differences in the rates. Results: A total of 3029 hospital discharges in patients older than 30 years old were coded as herpes zoster ophthalmicus. Of those, 1009 were coded as primary cause of hospitalization. This corresponds to a hospitalization rate of 0.94 and 0.31 hospitalizations per 100,000 for any position and first diagnostic position, respectively. The 75% of the total discharges were in immunocompetent patients. The herpes zoster ophthalmicus hospitalization rate increased significantly during the study period. This increase was also observed for immunocompetent patients. A total of 127 and 21 deaths occurred in patients ≥ 30 year-old hospitalized with herpes zoster ophthalmicus in any diagnostic position and principal diagnostic code, respectively during the 12-year study period. Of them, 70 (53.4%) were in immunocompetent patients, and, of those 11 were in patients with HZO in the first diagnosis position. The hospitalization rate and case-fatality rate increase significantly with age from 50 years old onwards. Conclusion: HZO, a vaccine preventable disease, still causes hospitalization and death in adults in Spain.

Glyco-sphingo biology: a novel perspective for potential new treatments in Huntington's disease

Huntington＇s disease （HD） is the most common dominantly inherited neurodegenerative disorder, mainly characterized by the progressive striatal and cortical neurodegeneration and as- sociated motor, cognitive and behavioural disturbances （Zuccato et al., 2010）. The disease-causing mutation is an expansion of a GAG trinucleotide repeat （〉 36 repeats） encoding a polygluta- mine stretch in the N-terminal region ofhuntingtin （Htt）（Zuc- cato et al., 2010）, a ubiquitous protein whose function is still unclear （Zuccato et al., 2010）. Expansion of the polyQ stretch endows mutant Htt （mHtt） with toxic properties, and results in the development of a broad array of undesirable effects in both neuronal and non-neuronal cells （Zuccato et al., 2010）. Among all cellular dysfunctions and biochemical imbalances classically associated with HD, perturbed metabolism of （glyco） sphingolipids appears to play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of the disease. Using Mobile Phone Data to Assess Socio-Economic Disparities in Unhealthy Food Reliance during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Background:Although COVID-19 has disproportionately affected socio-economically vulnerable populations,research on its impact on socio-economic disparities in unhealthy food reliance remains ***:This study uses mobile phone data to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on socio-economic disparities in reliance on convenience stores and fast *** is defined in terms of the proportion of visits to convenience stores out of the total visits to both convenience and grocery stores,and the proportion of visits to fast food restaurants out of the total visits to both fast food and full-service *** to each type of food outlet at the county level were traced and aggregated using mobile phone data before being analyzed with socio-economic demographics and COVID-19 incidence ***:Our findings suggest that a new COVID-19 case per 1,000 population decreased a county’s odds of relying on convenience stores by 3.41%and increased its odds of fast food reliance by 0.72%.As a county’s COVID-19 incidence rate rises by an additional case per 1,000 population,the odds of relying on convenience stores increased by 0.01%,0.02%,and 0.06%for each additional percentage of Hispanics,college-educated residents,and every additional year in median age,*** fast food reliance,as a county’s COVID-19 incidence rate increases by one case per 1,000 population,the odds decreased by 0.003%for every additional percentage of Hispanics but increased by 0.02%for every additional year in the county’s median ***:These results complement existing literature to promote equitable food environments.

Screening for and surveillance of gastric cancer

Although the prevalence of gastric cancer(GC) progressively decreased during the last decades,due to improved dietary habit,introduction of food refrigeration and recovered socio-economic level,it still accounts for 10% of the total cancer-related deaths. The best strategy to reduce the mortality for GC is to schedule appropriate screening and surveillance programs,that rises many relevant concerns taking into account its worldwide variability,natural history,diagnostic tools,therapeutic strategies,and cost-effectiveness. Intestinal-type,the most frequent GC histotype,develops through a multistep process triggered by Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) and progressing from gastritis to atrophy,intestinal metaplasia(IM),and dysplasia. However,the majority of patients infected with H. pylori and carrying premalignant lesions do not develop GC. Therefore,it remains unclear who should be screened,when the screening should be started and how the screening should be performed. It seems reasonable that screening programs should target the general population in eastern countries,at high prevalence of GC and the high-risk subjects in western countries,at low prevalence of *** far as concern surveillance,currently,we are lacking of standardized international recommendations and many features have to be defined regarding the optimal diagnostic approach,the patients at higher risk,the best timing and the ***,patients with corpus atrophic gastritis,extensive incomplete IM and dysplasia should enter a surveillance *** present,screening and surveillance programs need further studies to draw worldwide reliable recommendations and evaluate the impact on mortality for GC.

Effect of Nanoparticles on Mechanical Properties of Cement-Sand Mortar Applications

Cement-sand mortar is a construction material widely used;tile adhesive is one of the main applications where the compressive strength is the key performance metric. Nanoparticles like MWCNTs and HNTs are currently being used to improve the mechanical performance of the cement mortar due to their properties. The cost of MWCNTs has limited their application in the construction industry. This study focuses on the effect of two different concentrations of MWCNTs and HNTs in cement mortar;HNTs are proposed in this study to compare performance and cost overall benefits. A common problem with MWCNTs is agglomeration;to achieve a proper dispersion an ultrasonic processor was utilized. Mechanical properties of a cement mortar modified with nanoparticles were investigated with compression and bending tests on specimens performed at the age of 7 days. Results showed that concentrations of 0.1% of MWCNTs increase in compression strength by 56% and concentrations of 0.1% of HNTs performance increased by 31%, both compared to plain cement mortar.

BACKGROUND Life-long removal of gluten from the diet is currently the only way to manage celiac disease(CeD). Until now, no objective test has proven useful to objectively detect ingested gluten in clinical practice. Recently, tests that determine consumption of gluten by assessing excretion of gluten immunogenic peptides(GIP) in stool and urine have been developed. Their utility, in comparison with conventional dietary and analytical follow-up strategies, has not been fully *** To assess the performance of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) and point-of-care tests(PoCTs) for GIP excretion in CeD patients on gluten-free diet(GFD).METHODS We conducted an observational, prospective, cross-sectional study in patients following a GFD for at least two years. Using the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale questionnaire, patients were classified at enrollment as asymptomatic or symptomatic. Gluten consumption was assessed twice by 3-d dietary recall and GIP excretion(by ELISA in stool and PoCTs(commercial kits for stool and urine) in two consecutive samples. These samples and dietary reports were obtained 10 day apart one from the other. Patients were encouraged to follow their usual GFD during the study *** Forty-four patients were enrolled, of which 19(43.2%) were symptomatic despite being on a GFD. Overall, 83 sets of stool and/or urine samples were *** out of 44 patients(25.0%) had at least one positive GIP test. The occurrence of at least one positive test was 32% in asymptomatic patients compared with 15.8% in symptomatic patients. GIP was concordant with dietary reports in 65.9% of cases(Cohen′s kappa: 0.317). PoCT detected dietary indiscretions. Both ELISA and PoCT in stool were concordant(concomitantly positive or negative) in 67 out of 74(90.5%) samples. Correlative CD4 and CD8 T-cell immunodominance in humans and mice:Implications for preclinical testing

Antigen-specific T-cell recognition is restricted by Major Histocompatibility Complex(MHC)molecules,and differences between CD4 and CD8 immunogenicity in humans and animal species used in preclinical vaccine testing are yet to be fully *** this study,we addressed this matter by analyzing experimentally identified epitopes based on published data curated in the Immune Epitopes DataBase(IEDB)*** first analyzed SARS-CoV-2 spike(S)and nucleoprotein(N),which are two common targets of the immune response and well studied in both human and mouse *** observed a weak but statistically significant correlation between human and H-2^(b)mouse T-cell responses(CD8 S specific(r=0.206,p=1.37×10^(−13));CD4 S specific(r=0.118,p=2.63×10^(−5))and N specific(r=0.179,p=2.55×10^(−4))).Due to intrinsic differences in MHC molecules across species,we also investigated the association between the immunodominance of common Human Leukocyte Antigen(HLA)alleles for which HLA transgenic mice are available,namely,A*02:01,B*07:02,DRB1*01:01,and DRB1*04:01,and found higher significant correlations for both CD8 and CD4(maximum r=0.702,p=1.36×10^(−31)and r=0.594,p=3.04−122,respectively).Our results further indicated that some regions are commonly immunogenic between humans and mice(either H-2^(b)or HLA transgenic)but that others are human ***,we noted a significant correlation between CD8 and CD4 S-(r=0.258,p=7.33×10^(21))and N-specific(r=0.369,p=2.43×10^(14))responses,suggesting that discrete protein subregions can be simultaneously recognized by T *** findings were confirmed in other viral systems,providing general guidance for the use of murine models to test T-cell immunogenicity of viral antigens destined for human use.
