Nothofagus pumilio forests in Tierra del Fuego are the southernmost forests in the world,where extreme climate conditions represent a challenge to attain sustainable forest *** forestry was proposed as an alternative to increase the species conservation in managed ***,we synthetized results related to the implementation of a variable retention harvesting based on a combination of aggregate patches and dispersed retention during the last 18 years comparing with other silviculture proposals(e.g.,shelterwood cuts)and control treatments(primary unmanaged forests).We summarized the results for(i)sawmill operations,(ii)timber yield,(iii)overstory stability,(iv)forest structure,(v)microclimate and natural cycles,(vi)natural regeneration dynamics(flowering,seeding,foraging,recruitment,growth,and mortality),and(vii)biodiversity(mammals,understory plants,mistletoes,birds,arthropods,mosses,lichens,and fungi).In general,aggregate patches maintained forest structure and micro-environmental variables,and slightly increased biodiversity and forest reproduction variables compared to unmanaged primary *** the contrary,dispersed retention decreased forest structure variables and greatly increased biodiversity(richness and abundance)when it was compared to unmanaged primary *** conditions are influenced by variable retention harvesting,but direction and magnitude of the effect depend and differ according to retention *** this,biodiversity taxa greatly differed among groups depending on retention *** general,the species assemblages in aggregate patches were similar to those found in primary unmanaged forests,while they were significantly modified in the dispersed *** occurred due to(i)local extinction of some original species,(ii)the introduction of native species from the surrounding environments,or(iii)the invasion of exotic *** silvicultural method has been a useful tool to conserve biodiversity and ec

The Use of Secondary Grape Biomass in Beef Cattle Nutrition on Carcass Characteristics, Quality and Shelf Life of Meat

We determined whether the inclusion of 100 g/kg dry matter of grape pomace silage (GPS) and grape pomace bran (GPB) as substitutes for other traditional fiber sources in the diet of steers (Charolais x Nellore) would improve carcass characteristics, meat quality and composition, and shelf life. Twenty-four animals (248 ± 19.32 kg of initial body weight) were fed a high concentrate diet for 121 days. Carcass characteristics were measured, and the longissimus dorsi muscle was analyzed for fatty acid (FA) profile and composition. The meat was sliced and stored in air-permeable packages for 10 days. On each sampling day (d 1, 3, 7, and 10), oxidative stability, bacterial load, lipid and protein oxidation, and staining were analyzed. The experimental diets influenced the pH of cold carcasses only. The GPS group had a higher pH than the control. The GPS and GPB groups showed improved oxidant status (i.e., lower lipid peroxidation and concentrations of reactive oxygen species were in the meat of both groups than in control). On the first day of storage, the antioxidant enzyme glutathione S-transferase activity was more significant in the meat of the GPS and GPB groups than in the control. The bacterial loads in the meat were attenuated by GPS inclusion;there were lower total coliform counts and a trend toward lower counts for enterobacteria in the control group. The diets altered the FA profile of the meat;i.e., the GPB diet allowed for a more significant amount of the n-6 omegas in the meat, while the GPS diet showed a tendency for a more significant amount of n-6 and 9 omegas. Both diets (GPS and GPB) increased the amounts of long-chain FAs. The GPS diet decreased saturated FA levels. We conclude that the dietary treatments GPS and GPB are a promising alternative to maintain meat quality standards throughout in real-world retail conditions. We present major and trace element compositions of mineral concentrates comprising garnet xenocrysts,ilmenite,phlogopite,spinel,zircon,and uncommon minerals(titanite,calzirtite,anatase,baddeleyite and pyrochlore)of a newly discovered Late Cretaceous kimberlite(U-Pb zircon age 90.0±1.3 Ma;2σ)named Osvaldo Franca 1,located in the Alto Paranaíba Igneous Province(APIP),southeastern *** grains are lherzolitic(Lherz-1,Lherz-2 and Lherz-3),harzburgitic(Harz-3)and wehrlitic(Wehr-2).The pyrope xenocrysts cover a wide mantle column in the subcratonic lithosphere(66–143 km;20–43 kbar)at relatively low temperatures(811–875°C).The shallowest part of this mantle is represented by Lherz-1 pyropes(20–32 kbar),which have low-Cr(Cr_(2)O_(3)=1.74–6.89 wt.%)and fractionated middle to heavy rare earth elements(MREE-HREE)*** deepest samples are represented by Lherz-2,Lherz-3,Harz-3,and Wehr-2 pyropes(36–43 kbar).They contain high-Cr contents(Cr_(2)O_(3)=7.36–11.19 wt.%)and are characterized by sinusoidal(Lherz-2 and Wehr-2)and spoon-like(Lherz-3 and Harz-3)REE *** to their REE and trace elements,pyrope xenocrysts have enriched nature(e.g.,Ce and Yb ***_(2)O_(3)),indicating that the cratonic lithosphere has been affected by a silicate melt with subalkaline/tholeiite composition due to their low Zr,Ti and Y *** minerals with typical kimberlitic signatures,such as ilmenite and zircon,the exotic compositions of phlogopite and ulvöspinel suggest an enriched component in the magma *** formation of rare mineral phases with strong enrichment of light-REE(LREE)and high field strength elements(HFSE)is attributed to the late-stage kimberlitic *** propose a tectonic model where a thermal anomaly,represented by the low-velocity seismic anomaly observed in P-wave seismic tomography images,supplied heat to activate the alkaline magmatism from a metasomatized cratonic mantle source during the late-stages of Gondwana fragmentation and conse

The catastrophic rockslide,which frequently triggers numerous severe disasters worldwide,has drawn much attention globally;however,understanding the initiation mechanism of catastrophic rockslides in the absence of typical single triggering factors related to strong seismic activity or torrential precipitation continues to be challenging within the global scientific *** study aims to determine the mechanism of the three largest catastrophic rockslides in the eastern Tibetan Plateau,Yigong,Xinmo,and Baige,over the past 20 years using field investigation,remote sensing,and runoff *** of the conventional driving factors of heavy rainfall and strong earthquakes,the multi-wing butterfly effects(MWBE)of climatic factors and weak earthquakes are for the first time identified as drivers of the catastrophic rockslide ***,strong tectonic uplift,fast fluvial incision,high-density faults,and large regional water confluence formed the slopes in the critical regime,creating the source conditions of ***,the MWBE of early dry-heat events and antecedent rainfall,combined with imminent weak earthquakes,initiated ***,the delayed amplified runoff moving toward the sliding surface and lowering the strength of the locking-rock segment constituted the fundamental mechanism of the MWBE on *** catastrophic rockslide was ultimately inferred to be a nonlinear chaotic process;however,prediction and forecasting of rockslide based on the MWBE in the early stages are possible and *** finding presents a new perspective concerning forecasting progressive landslides.
