Synthesis of highly fluorescent carb.n dots from lemon and onion juices for determination of rib.flavin in multivitamin/mineral supplements

In this work, lemon and onion b.omasses commonly found in street markets are for the first time used to develop a facile, fast and low-cost one-step microwave-assisted carb.nization method for synthesis of highly fluorescent carb.n dots (CDs). The structure and optical properties of CDs were investigated b. TEM, XRD, XRF, UV-Vis, FTIR, and fluorescence spectroscopy. CDs displayed satisfactory optical pro-prieties, a high quantum yield of 23.6%, and excellent water solub.lity, and the particle size was 4.23-8.22 nm with an average diameter of 6.15 nm. An efficient fluorescent resonance energy transfer (FRET) b.tween the CDs and rib.flavin was achieved with CDs acting as donor and rib.flavin as acceptor. A linear relationship b.tween FRET and the rib.flavin concentration from 0.10 to 3.0 μg/mL was ob.erved, allowing the development of an accurate and fast analytical method to determine this vitamin in multivitamin/mineral supplements. Despite the potential interferences in these supplements, CDs were selective for rib.flavin under optimized conditions. A paired t-test at a 95% confidence level indicated no statistically significant difference b.tween the proposed and the reference methods. Recovery test presented values ranged from 96.0% to 101.4%. The limit of detection and relative standard deviation were estimated at 1.0 ng/mL and b.flavin.

b.oad Hormonal Responses Induced b. Aluminum in Roots of Dwarf Transgenics of Solanum lycopersicum L. cv “Micro-Tom”

The spatial pattern distrib.tion of plant hormones in response to aluminum (Al) toxicity in roots remains to b. shown. This study was performed to assess the root hormonal accumulation and gene expression in response to Al toxicity in five transgenic miniature dwarf tomatoes cv. Micro-Tom (MT). MT and MT transgenics to acid indole acetic, cytokinin, gib.erellin, ab.cisic acid and ethylene were cultivated in nutrient solutions containing different Al concentrations. Root growth elongation was measured and cellular damage was visualized b. staining Evans’s b.ue. The GUS reporter gene staining technique was used to visualize hormonal changes in MT apex root tissues. Data indicated that the MT is sensitive to Al that induced significant growth inhib.tion and cellular damage. Al concentration of 27 μM was significantly toxic, inducing root apex darkening and inhib.tion of root development. The qualitative evaluation of GUS reporter gene expression showed intense crosstalk among all hormones studied, underscoring the complexity of signaling induced b. Al in apex roots. Results point out to a major understanding of the hormonal signaling in response to Al toxicity, which may induce a change of root growth and architecture with growth inhib.tion and cell constraints modulated b. all different hormones evaluated.

Ob.ective: Sexual violence affects women of all ages b.t, more commonly, children and adolescents. This study aimed to identify the extent to which services are b.ing provided at the hospitals responsib.e for the emergency care of children and adolescents who have suffered sexual violence and to determine whether there is any difference in the provision of such services as a function of the victim’s age. Method: This cross-sectional study investigated differences in the care received b. female children and adolescents who are victims of sexual violence in a capital city, comparing the treatment given to girls under 15 with that given to adolescents of 15 to 19 years of age. The data were extracted from the State Department of Health datab.se b.tween 01/01/2012 and 31/12/2016. Results: Children under 15 were much less likely to receive prophylaxis against HIV, sexually transmitted infections and hepatitis b. with the numb.r of adolescent girls treated adequately corresponding to b.tween twice and almost three times the numb.r of children treated prophylactically. Only 10% of girls under 15 received emergency contraception. Conclusion: The lack of standard care estab.ished b. the Ministry of Health highlights the need for urgent deb.tes b.th locally and prob.b.y throughout the country, as the situation may b. similar in other regions of the country.

Antioxidants Enzymes Activities and NO Levels in Hemodialysis and Continuous Amb.latory Peritoneal Dialysis—A Comparative Study

It consists of a retrospective study with twenty-two individuals diagnosed with DRC: fourteen HD and eight CAPD, followed up in the dialysis center of Antonio Pedro University Hospital (HUAP) of Fluminense Federal University (UFF), b.tween 2015 and 2017. Fifteen healthy control (HC) sub.ects were included, without diagnosed CKD. Patients with HIV positive, hepatitis A, b. and C, pregnant, cancer, smokers, alcoholics and those exposed to X-rays in the last 3 months, were excluded. Ob.ectives: As oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction may b. linked to the higher prevalence of CVD in CKD patients, we measured the activities of the antioxidants enzymes: SOD and GPx and total NO levels in the plasma and serum of end-stage CKD patients undergoing dialysis therapy, comparing with the HC group. Methods: Quantification of NO levels was performed b. fluorometric kit, while activities of SOD and GPx were determined using kinetic methods. Results: We found higher plasma SOD activity in HD (8.58 U/ml) and CAPD (10.14 U/ml), compared to C (3.73 U/ml) group, while GPx activity was decreased in HD (115.38 nmol/h/ml) and CAPD (122.76 nmol/h/ml) groups compared to HC group (275.83 nmol/h/ml). Total serum NO concentration was decreased in HD (14.09 pmol/μl) and CAPD (10.26 pmol/μl), compared to non-CKD patients (49.65 pmol/μl). Conclusion: Decreased total serum NO and GPx activities may lead to endothelial dysfunction and consequently a higher prevalence of CVD in CKD patients.

Literature review and b.b.iometric analysis on data-driven assessment of landslide susceptib.lity

In recent decades, data-driven landslide susceptib.lity models(Dd LSM), which are b.sed on statistical or machine learning approaches, have b.come popular to estimate the relative spatial prob.b.lity of landslide occurrence. The availab.e literature is composed of a wealth of pub.ished studies and that has identified a large variety of challenges and innovations in this field. This review presents a comprehensive up-to-date overview focusing on the topic of Dd LSM. This research b.gins with an introduction of the theoretical aspects of Dd LSM research and is followed b. an in-depth b.b.iometric analysis of 2585 pub.ications. This analysis is b.sed on the Web.of Science, Clarivate Analytics datab.se and provides insights into the transient characteristics and research trends within pub.ished spatial landslide assessments. Following the b.b.iometric analysis, a more detailed review of the most recent pub.ications from 1985 to 2020 is given. A variety of different criteria are explored in detail, including research design, study area extent,inventory characteristics, classification algorithms, predictors utilized, and validation technique performed. This section, dealing with a quantitativeoriented review expands the time-frame of the review pub.ication done b. Reichenb.ch et al. in 2018 b. also accounting for the four years, 2017-2020. The originality of this research is acknowledged b. comb.ning together:(a) a recap of important theoretical aspects of Dd LSM;(b. a b.b.iometric analysis on the topic;(c) a quantitative-oriented review of relevant pub.ications;and(d) a systematic summary of the findings, indicating important aspects and potential developments related to the Dd LSM research topic. The results show that Dd LSM are used within a wide range of applications with study area extents ranging from a few kilometers to national and even continental scales. In more than 70% of pub.ications, a comb.nation of the predictors, slope angle, aspect and geology are used.

Two-dimensional （2D） metamaterials are considered to b. of enormous relevance to the progress of all exact sciences. Since the discovery of graphene, researchers have increasingly investigated in depth the details of electrical/optical proper- ties pertinent to other 2D metamaterials, including those relating to the silicene. In this review are included the details and comparisons of the atomic structures, energy diagram b.nds, sub.trates, charge densities, charge mob.lities, conductivities, ab.orptions, electrical permittivities, dispersion relations of the wave vectors, and supported electromagnetic modes related to graphene and silicene. Hence, this review can help readers to acquire, recover or increase the necessary technological b.sis for the development of more specific studies on graphene and silicene.
