Changes in cellular proliferation and plasma products are associated with liver failure

AIM To study the differences in immune response and cytokine profile between acute liver failure and selflimited acute *** Forty-six patients with self-limited acute hepatitis(AH), sixteen patients with acute liver failure(ALF), and twenty-two healthy subjects were involved in this study. The inflammatory and anti-inflammatory products in plasma samples were quantified using commercial enzyme-linked immunoassays and quantitative real-time PCR. The cellular immune responses were measured by proliferation assay using flow cytometry. The groups were divided into viral- and non-viral-induced selflimited AH and ALF. Thus, we worked with five groups: Hepatitis A virus(HAV)-induced self-limited acute hepatitis(HAV-AH), HAV-induced ALF(HAV-ALF), nonviral-induced self-limited acute hepatitis(non-viral AH), non-viral-induced acute liver failure(non-viral ALF), and healthy subjects(HC). Comparisons among HAV and non-viral-induced AH and ALF were *** The levels of mitochondrial DNA(mt DNA) and the cytokines investigated [interleukin(IL)-6, IL-8, IL-10, interferon gamma, and tumor necrosis factor] were significantly increased in ALF patients, independently of etiology(P < 0.05). High plasma mt DNA and IL-10 were the best markers associated with ALF [mt DNA: OR = 320.5(95%CI: 14.42-7123.33), P < 0.0001; and IL-10: OR = 18.8(95%CI: 1.38-257.94), P = 0.028] and death [mt DNA: OR = 12.1(95%CI: 2.57-57.07), P = 0.002; and IL-10: OR = 8.01(95%CI: 1.26-50.97), P = 0.027]. In the cellular proliferation assay, NK^(bright), NKT and regulatory T cells(TReg) predominated in virusspecific stimulation in HAV-induced ALF patients with an anergic behavior in the cellular response to mitotic stimulation. Therefore, in non-viral-induced ALF, anergic behavior of activated T cells was not observed after mitotic stimulation, as expected and as described by the literature. The campo rupestre sensu lato is a vegetation type that occurs in South American mountains,supports a distinctive flora characterized by high rates of endemism,high herbaceous species richness and often-neglected but also species-rich of the arboreal *** aimed to investigate how environmental factors and elevation are associated with the distribution and diversity of woody species in different rupestrian vegetation types across South *** a database of 2,049 woody species from 185 sites across four vegetation types within the campo rupestre,we assessed how the vegetation types were grouped according to their floristic composition and number of shared indicator species,as well as by using different beta diversity *** most important variables from a set of 27 variables(***,geo-edaphic and climatic)explaining species distribution were identified using redundancy analysis(RDA)and variation partitioning *** distribution of vegetation types was related to both environmental and spatial fractions,with a set of 17 variables retained(***,grass cover and temperature seasonality as the most important variables).There was an association between the floristic composition of each vegetation type and the elevation *** the identified vegetation types are floristically related,they are distinguished by exclusive and habitat-specialist woody *** uniqueness of vegetation types should be considered in terms of complementarity for the conservation of campos rupestres.

Designing and developing distributed cyber-physical production systems(CPPS)is a time-consuming,complex,and error-prone *** systems are typically heterogeneous,i.e.,they consist of multiple components implemented with different languages and development *** of the main problems nowadays in CPPS implementation is enabling security mechanisms by design while reducing the complexity and increasing the system’s *** the IEC 61499 standard is an excellent approach to tackle these challenges by enabling the design,deployment,and management of CPPS in a model-based engineering *** propose a method for CPPS design based on the IEC 61499 *** method allows designers to embed a bio-inspired anomaly-based host intrusion detection system(A-HIDS)in Edge *** A-HIDS is based on the incremental Dendritic Cell Algorithm(iDCA)and can analyze OPC UA network data exchanged between the Edge devices and detect attacks that target the CPPS’Edge *** study’s findings have practical implications on the industrial security community by making novel contributions to the intrusion detection problem in CPPS considering immune-inspired solutions,and cost-effective security by design system *** to the experimental data,the proposed solution can dramatically reduce design and code complexity while improving application maintainability and successfully detecting network attacks without negatively impacting the performance of the CPPS Edge devices.

I Will Not Forget the Land Where I Was Born——The Educational Legacy of Oliveira Lopes Brothers

The tendency to participate with solidarity in the religious and assistance initiatives is a trademark of the Portuguese who returned from Brazil. The major novelty in the second half of the nineteenth century is the conduction of large sums of money towards education, in a framework of philanthropy that was unusual. This inclusion of education in the field of charity was in the concerns of politicians and intellectuals of the time who argued that ＂only by educating people, nations can achieve its independence, wealth and freedom （...）＂. Inserted in this context we can find examples that deserve, by their paradigmatic profile, a more detailed attention. After making fortune, Oliveira Lopes and his brother tried to solve problems that seemed without solution in their homeland. This example assumes a synthetizing nature for several reasons. Firstly, because it portraits the typical Brazilian of the end of the nineteenth century that saw education as a fundamental tool to approach Portugal to the international standards. Secondly, because with the well-being of his fellow countrymen and the ＂notoriety of his hometown＂ he can diminish the pain of the ＂abandonment in search of wealth＂. Thirdly, because his return introduced a new sense and a new rhythm in searching solutions for eternal problems in the field of religion, assistance or education. Finally because, even though they are the minority of Brazilians that achieved fortune, they put their wealth in the service of the country that made them leave in order to try to stop the flux of emigrants.

This research investigates the soil conditioning effect of sugar cane fields with biochar produced from sugarcane *** influence on the physicochemical and microbiological conditions of the soil and the agronomic performance of sugarcane seedlings was *** this end,the biochar from sugarcane bagasse was produced by pyrolysis in a double drum oven and mixed with soil at rates of 0,1%,3%,and 5%(in weight).The experiment was installed in a greenhouse with two evaluation periods(30 days and 60 days)and five *** pot received a pre-sprouted cane seedling,and the analysis of colony-forming units(bacteria and fungi),physicochemical characteristics of the soil,and growth and development of sugarcane were performed per *** biochar showed a high fixed carbon content(72%)and a specific surface area estimated by the adsorption of methylene blue of 50 m2 g−***,its structure is porous and contains important nutrients(e.g.,CaO,K2O,and P2O5).In the periods evaluated,the applications of the 3%and 5%(in weight)rates of biochar reduced most of the soil fertility ***,the chemical analyses indicated that the sugarcane field soil collected already possessed high *** microbiota was influenced,but only the application of the 3%(in weight)rate at 60 days after planting showed a significant positive effect on the number of bacteria forming units,with an increase of approximately 385%.On the other hand,no significant positive effect on sugarcane development was ***,biochar application in high-fertility sugarcane plantation soil did not result in gains for sugarcane development in the periods evaluated.

Intimate partner violence against women. Does violence decrease after the entry of the alleged offender into the criminal justice system?

Intimate partner violence(IPV)is simultaneously assumed as a serious crime and a major public health issue,having recurrences as one of its main characteristics and,consequently,re-entries of some alleged offenders in the criminal justice system(CJS).The main goal of this study is to assess if in cases of female victims of IPV,violence decreases after the first entry of the alleged offender in the CJS.A retrospective study was performed based on the analysis of police reports of alleged cases of IPV during a 4-year *** final sample(n=1488)was divided into two groups according to the number of entries in the CJS(single or multiple)followed by a comparative *** suggest that violence decreases after the first entry of alleged offenders in the ***-entries were found in only 15.5%of the cases but they were accountable for 3.3 times more crimes on ***,victims of recidivism presented more injuries and required more medical ***,a small group of alleged offenders seems to be more violent and accountable for most of the IPV crimes registered in the CJS suggesting that regardless of legal sanctions aiming to deter violence,these measures may not be enough for a certain group of *** study sustains the need for a predictive model to quantify the risk of repeated IPV cases within the Portuguese population.

Technical Evaluation of Hybrid Clones of Corymbia spp. to Produce Market Pulp

This study presents hybrid clones of Corymbia *** by Aperam BioEnergia as potential substitutes for Eucalyptus wood in the pulp *** biomass of Eucalyptus *** compared with that of Corymbia *** performing modified kraft pulping and basic density *** were made by analyzing their respective mean annual increments of cellulose(MAI_(cel))and specific wood consumption(SWC),estimated using a kappa number of(19±1).The results showed that one of the hybrid clones(Corymbia citriodora×Corymbia torelliana,ID 4)had higher basic wood density,higher screened yield,better MAI_(cel#k19),and lower SWC than the other samples,reaching values of 0.608 t/m^(3),54.1%,24.6 ADt/ha/year(i.e.,air dry ton/hectare/year),and 2.74 m^(3)/ADt,***,clone ID 4 had the highest MAI_(cel)/SWC ratio score(8.98).Given its high forest productivity and low industrial cost compared with other samples,as well as its advantages over Eucalyptus ***,we concluded that clone ID 4 has great potential as an alternative biomass for pulp production.
