Manganese ferri.e nanopowder was prepared by thermal decomposi.i.n at 400℃ of the gel synthesi.ed from manganese and i.on ni.rates and polyvi.yl alcohol. X-ray di.fractometry evi.enced that manganese ferri.e was formed as si.gle crystalli.e phase at thi. temperature. Scanni.g electron mi.roscope i.ages evi.enced the formati.n of very fi.e spheri.al parti.les （d 〈 11 nm） of manganese ferri.e, wi.h speci.i. surface area of 147 m2/g. The powder obtai.ed at 400℃ was used as a catalyst for the oxi.ati.e degradati.n of phenol i. aqueous soluti.ns, i. the presence of potassi.m peroxydi.ulfate as oxi.ant. Hi.h phenol removal effi.i.nci.s above 90% were reached at： pH 3-3.5, phenol i.i.i.l concentrati.n around 50 mg/L, peroxydi.ulfate：phenol mass rati. 10：1, and catalyst dose 3 g/L. Total organi. carbon measurements showed that the degradati.n of phenol goes, under these condi.i.ns, to mi.erali.ati.n i. an extent of 60%.
