Oxidative stress favours herpes virus infection in vertebrates： a meta-analysis

Herpes viruses are responsible for a variety of pathological effects in humans and in both wild and domestic animals. One mechanism that has been proposed to facilitate replication and activity of herpes viruses is oxidative stress （OS）. We used meta-analytical techniques to test the hypotheses that （1） herpes virus infection causes OS and （2） supplementation of antioxidants reduces virus load, indicating that replication is favoured by a state of OS. Results based on studies on mammals, including humans, and birds show that （1） OS is indeed increased by herpes virus infection across multiple tissues and species, （2） biomarkers of OS may change differently between tissues, and （3） the effect size does not differ among different virus strains. In addition, the increase of oxidative damage in blood （tissue commonly available in ecological studies） was similar to that in the tissues most sensitive to the herpes virus. Our results also show that administration of antioxidants re- duces virus yield, indicating that a condition of OS is favorable for the viral replication. In addition, some antioxidants may be more efficient than others in reducing herpes virus yield. Our results point to a potential mechanism linking herpes virus infection to individual health status.

Although exogenous treatment of plants withjasmonic acid （JA） may result in induced responses similar to plant defences induced by herbivory, few studies have compared the details of insect herbivory and JA-mimicked responses. We compared volatiles of two crucifer species, Cardamine impatiens and Lepidium virginicum, in response to Plutella xylostella larval feeding and exogenous application of JA, over the entire period of time when induced changes were detectable. Significant differences in the composition and timing of volatiles occurred between herbivory and JA treatments in both plants. The quantity ofnitrile and isothiocyanate released in response to herbivory was significantly larger than that upon JA treatment. In each of the two plant species, most volatile components were emitted immediately upon larval feeding and their quantity dropped rapidly once feeding ceased. In contrast, the emission of volatiles in response to JA treatment lasted for a longer period of time, and the maximum emission rate was recorded 2 and 3 days after JA treatment in L. virginicum and C. impatiens respectively. These findings are discussed in the context of signal-transduction pathways and mechanisms involved in induced emissions of plant volatiles, as well as induced defences mediated by plant volatiles.

Impact of antithrombin Ⅲ on hepatic and intestinal microcirculation in experimental liver cirrhosis and bowel inflammation: An in vivo analysis

AIM： To analyze the hepatic and intestinal microcirculation in an animal model of liver cirrhosis and inflammatory bowel disease （IBD） and to characterize bhe anti-inflammatory action of antithrombin Ⅲ （ATⅢ） on leukocyte kinetics and liver damage. METHODS： Hepatic and intestinal microcirculation was investigated by intravital videomicroscopy. Standardized models of experimental chronic liver cirrhosis and bowel inflammation were employed. Animals were divided into four groups （n = 6/group）： controls, animals with cirrhosis, animals with cirrhosis and IBD, animals with cirrhosis and IBD treated with ATIII. RESULTS： Cirrhosis facilitated leukocyte rolling and sticking in hepatic sinusoids （1.91±0.28 sticker/μm vs 0.5±0.5 sticker/μm in controls, P〈0.05）. The effect enhanced in animals with cirrhosis and IBD （5.4±1.65 sticker/μm）, but reversed after ATIII application （3.97±1.04 sticker/μm, P〈0.05）. Mucosal blood flow showed no differences in cirrhotic animals and controls （5.3±0.31 nL/min vs5.4±0.25 nL/min） and was attenuated in animals wibh cirrhosis and IBD significantly （3.49±0.6 nL/min）. This effect was normalized in the treatment group （5.13±0.4 nL/min, P〈0.05）. Enzyme values rose during development of cirrhosis and bowel inflammation, and reduced after ATIII application （P〈0.05）. CONCLUSION： Liver cirrhosis in the presence of IBD leads to a significant reduction in mucosal blood flow and an increase in hepatic leukocyte adherence with consecutive liver injury, which can be prevented by administration of ATⅢ.

Non-dimensional similarity groups and analytically solvable proximity equations can be used to estimate integral fluid film parameters of elastohydrodynamically lubricated(EHL)*** this contribution,we demonstrate that machine learning(ML)and artificial intelligence(AI)approaches(support vector machines,Gaussian process regressions,and artificial neural networks)can predict relevant film parameters more efficiently and with higher accuracy and flexibility compared to sophisticated EHL simulations and analytically solvable proximity equations,*** this purpose,we use data from EHL simulations based upon the full-system finite element(FE)solution and a Latin hypercube *** verify that the original input data are required to train ML approaches to achieve coefficients of determination above *** is revealed that the architecture of artificial neural networks(neurons per layer and number of hidden layers)and activation functions influence the prediction *** impact of the number of training data is exemplified,and recommendations for a minimum database size are *** ultimately demonstrate that artificial neural networks can predict the locally-resolved film thickness values over the contact domain 25-times faster than FE-based EHL simulations(R^(2) values above 0.999).We assume that this will boost the use of ML approaches to predict EHL parameters and traction losses in multibody system dynamics simulations.

The regulation of plant transpiration is a key factor affecting transpiration efficiency, growth and adaptation of Eucalyptus species to limited water availability in tropical and subtropical environments. However, few studies have related this trait to the performance of Eucalyptus seedlings and none have investigated the influence of vapor pressure deficit (VPD) on transpiration rates and growth. In this study, the transpiration and growth responses of seedlings of Eucalyptus urophylla (S.T. Blake) and Eucalyptus cloeziana (F. Muell.) to progressive soil water deficits were evaluated under semi-controlled conditions using the fraction of transpirable soil water (FTSW) method. In addition, the influence of VPD on seedling transpiration, development and growth was also investigated. The FTSW threshold ranged from 0.40 to 0.99 for the transpiration rate and from 0.32 to 0.97 for the development and growth variables. Little or no changes in the FTSW threshold were detected in response to changes in atmospheric VPD. Both Eucalyptus species presented a conservation strategy under drought stress. In addition, water-conserving mechanisms during the seedling phase were related to rapid stomatal closure, reduced leaf area, and number of leaves.

The effect of four host plant species of the herbivore Maruca vitrata Fabri- cius （Lepidoptera： Crambidae） on development time, longevity, fecundity and sex ratio of the parasitoid Apanteles taragamae Viereck （Hymenoptera： Braconidae） was investi- gated under laboratory conditions. The larvae were parasitized when in the second instar. Maruca vitrata larvae were fed with flowers of four legumes, that is, Vigna unguiculata （cowpea）, Sesbania rostrata, Lonchocarpus sericeus and Pterocarpus santalinoides, or an artificial diet both before and after parasitization. The parasitoid did not develop in hosts feeding on L. sericeus or E unguiculata at 25℃, or on P. santalinoides at 25℃ or 29℃. Apanteles taragamae had the shortest development time on artificial diet at both 25℃ and 29℃ while the longest development time was recorded on L. sericeus at 29℃. Female wasps took longer to develop compared to males at the two temperatures, regardless of the feeding substrate of their host. The longevity of the wasps at 25℃ varied among feeding substrates, but not at 29℃. Survival rate of parasitized larvae depends on the feeding sub- strate. Moreover, infection of host larvae with Maruca vitrata multi-nucleopolyhedrovirus （MaviMNPV） killed larger proportions of parasitized larvae at 25℃ than at 29℃, which was likely caused by the difference in parasitoid developmental rate. The proportion of female parasitoids was lowest on L. sericeus. The daily fecundity showed a nonlinear trend regardless of the feeding substrate, indicating that A. taragamae is a pro-ovigenic species. The data support the slow growth-high mortality hypothesis.

We investigate the impact of the Canada-Chile Free Trade Agreement （CCFTA） on Canadian exports to Chile, particularly the dynamic effects of the agree- ment on extensive and intensive margins of trade. Consistent with the literature, we find that the extensive margin effects occurred later than the intensive margin effects and became more prominent in the long-term. Surprisingly, the intensive margin ef- fects died off in the long-term. A theoretical model is constructed to show that our results can arise in a standard setting of intra-industry trade.

AIM: To evaluate the effects of percutaneous radiation on leukocyte-endothelium interaction (LEI) in experimental hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). METHODS: Twelve ACI rats underwent HCC-inoculation, six of which on day 12 received low-dose external radiation and six did not. After 12 h intravital microscopy was performed. RESULTS: LEI was significantly reduced in tumor tissue. However,irradiation of liver sinusoids and tumor tissue with 6 Gy led to a significant activation of leukocyte adhesion in the tumor with a marked increase of the proinflammatory cytokine TNF-α. CONCLUSION: The findings indicate that the immune-logical tumor-endothelial barrier can be overcome by external irradiation.

The study evaluated the effectiveness of honey dressings in healing recent skin wounds with soft tissue loss on limbs. Conducted over a year with 60 patients, results showed a significant reduction in wound size and early healing, with complete recovery on average within 29 days. The study supports honey as a viable wound treatment.
