Introduction Overweight and obesity are considered to be global public health concerns. The objective was to estimate the prevalence of overweight and obesity and the associated factors. Methods This was a cross-sectional study conducted in 2016 and involving 3968 adolescents of 10 to 19 years from 40 secondary schools in Benin. Participants were selected using a 2-level random sampling technique. Data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire and were analyzed using Epi Info and Stata softwares. Associated factors were investigated by a logistic regression. Results Mean age was 16.54 ± 0.04 years and sex ratio was 1.16. The prevalence of overweight was 8.1% and that of obesity was 1.6%. Associated risk factors were female gender, sedentary lifestyle, consumption of sugary and carbonated beverages. Consumption of fruits and vegetables, regular physical activity, age over than 15 years were protective factors. Conclusion Overweight and obesity among school adolescents are increasing in Benin. The establishment of a school nutrition program and the promotion of regular physical activity should contribute to reducing their prevalence.

Primary Headache Disorders in HIV-Infected Patients within a Hospital Setting in Sub-Saharan Africa, Benin Case: Prevalence and Associated Factors

Introduction: Headache disorders are common in HIV-infected patients. These disorders are either primary or secondary. Objective: Determine prevalence and factors associated with primary headache disorders in HIV+ patients. Method: It was a cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study conducted from 2nd May 2017 to 2nd August 2017 which included HIV+ patients aged 18 years and above. Diagnosis of primary headache disorders was carried out by a Neurologist on the basis of ICHD-II diagnostic criteria. The?dependent variable was primary headache disorders. Epi Info Version 7.***.1.0 and STATA11 were used for data analysis. P Results: Primary headache disorders prevalence was 25.2% (124/493).Tension-type headache represented 77.41%. HIV+ patients were aged 42.63 ± 10.14 years. Sex-ratio was estimated at 0.14. Factors associated with primary headache disorders in HIV+ patients were: male (0.36 [0.17 - 0.77];P = 0.008), Dendi ethnicity (14.8 [2.08 - 101.99];P = 0.007), trader (3.09 [01.25 - 7.62];P = 0.02), WHO clinical stage (3.20 [1.43 - 7.17];P = 0.005), screening duration (1.01 [1.00 - 1.01];P = 0.00), hypertension (10.28 [4.44 - 23.83];P ≤ 0.001). Conclusion: This study helped to determine the standard profile of HIV+ patient with primary headache disorders. It will contribute to save costs associated with paraclinical examinations, while in search of secondary etiologies within an African context with limited financial resources.

Technological, Sensorial and Nutritional Meat Quality Traits from Pig Fed with Conventional and Unconventional Diets

The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of unconventional food resources on the quality of pig meat. 90 pigs of which 20 were slaughtered at 180 days old for meat quality evaluation. It came out from the study that the highest L* and b* were obtained in A0 commercial feed, while the highest a* was recorded in A3 (P Longissimus dorsi) were lower in control group than in experimental groups. The cooking loss and water-holding capacity of the meat from A4 were higher than those of other treatments. Luminance, redness, yellowness, chroma values and pH of the pork had increased during the post-mortem aging time for the both diet treatments while the hue value decreased (P < 0.05). Nutritionally, the protein content, the fat content, the dry matter content and the ash content varied respectively from 24.45% to 26.87%, 0.52% to 1.6%, 26% to 27.5% and 1.1% to 1.79% with the highest protein contents found in meat from unconventional feed A4 (P < 0.01) while the highest fat content (1.6%) was obtained from meat of the control group A0 (P < 0.001). The texture of the meat from the control group was better than those of experimental groups (P < 0.01). Overall, unconventional diet based on Azolla and Moringa improves technological and nutritional pork quality.

Dementia and Diabetes Mellitus in Porto-Novo: Frequency and Determining Factors

Background: Chronic hyperglycemia promotes the development of degenerative diseases such as dementia. Our objective is to study dementia in diabetic patients in a hospital environment in Porto-Novo. Methods: This is a cross-sectional, prospective study with a descriptive and analytical aim that took place from May 18 to September 18, 2017, i.e. 4 months. The study population consists of all diabetic patients who consulted in the internal medicine departments of the Oueme-Plateau Teaching Hospital and at Saint Gérard clinic in Porto-Novo during the study period and who gave their enlightened consent. Results: The study included 246 patients with a mean age of 56.47 ± 11.97 years. There were 172 (69.9%) women, i.e. a sex ratio of 0.43. Diabetes had been known for less than 10 years in the majority (67.9%). Type 2 diabetics were in the majority (95.5%). Of the 246 patients, 42 (17.1%) had a Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) less than or equal to 24. Of these 42 patients, 32 met the DSM V (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual disorders, 5th edition) criteria for dementias, i.e. a frequency of 13.0%. Of the 32 demented patients, 21 (65.6%) had vascular dementia and 34.4% had degenerative dementia. We did not note a mixed etiology. Dementia was severe in 15.6% of cases. In multivariate analysis, only age (OR = 10.09;95% CI [4.19 - 24.27];p Conclusion: Screening for dementia should be systematic in diabetics, especially at old age.

Bacteriological Profile of Infections Encountered in a Pneumology Service in a Moderate-Income Country [Pneumology Department of CHU Cocody (Côte d’Ivoire)]

Introduction: Infections represent a real public health problem aggravating the morbidity and mortality of hospitalized patients. Methods: This was a retrospective study with descriptive purposes over a period of 05 years, in the Pneumology Department of the University Hospital of Cocody. Results: The average age in our population was 42 years. We observed a male predo- minance of 64.5%, with a sex ratio of 1.8. Medical history was dominated by HIV infection (23.5%), followed by tuberculosis (15.6%). Concerning lifestyle, smoking was found in 38% of cases. Symptoms progressed chronically in 80% of cases. An infectious syndrome was found in 75% of cases. Microbial culture was positive in 42% of cases. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae were encountered in 26.4% of cases each, followed by Echerichia coli in 10.4% of cases. Klebsiella pneumoniae in the first three years topped the list, but gradually. Pseudomonas aeruginosa maintained its leadership over the last three years. Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates expressed a resistance rate of 9.8% to ceftazidime and 8.1% to imipenem;to aztreonam (36%), ticarcillin (33.3%) and levofloxacin. These strains were susceptible to fosfomycin (100%), mero- penem (96.6%) and amikacin (96%). For isolated strains of Entero- bacteria- ceae, resistance was observed about ticarcillin (83.3%) and amoxicillin clavula- nic acid (71.2%). Streptococcaceae showed resistance to tetracycline (69.2%) and erythromycin (50%). Over the years there has been an increase in re- sistance to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid ceftriaxone. The death rate was 14%. Conclusion: The bacterial profile of infections is dominated by germs respon- sible for nosocomial infection with significant mortality.

Impact of transplant nephrectomy on peak PRA levels and outcome after kidney re-transplantation

AIM: To determine the impact of transplant nephrectomy on peak panel reactive antibody(PRA) levels, patient and graft survival in kidney re-transplants. METHODS: From 1969 to 2006, a total of 609 kidney re-transplantations were performed at the University of Freiburg and the Campus benjamin Franklin of the University of Berlin. Patients with PRA levels above(5%) before first kidney transplantation were excluded from further analysis(n = 304). Patients with graft nephrectomy(n = 245, NE+) were retrospectively compared to 60 kidney re-transplants without prior graft nephrectomy(NE-).RESULTS: Peak PRA levels between the first and the second transplantation were higher in patients undergoing graft nephrectomy(P = 0.098), whereas the last PRA levels before the second kidney transplantation did not differ between the groups. Age adjusted survival for the second kidney graft, censored for death with functioning graft, were comparable in both groups. Waiting time between first and second transplantation did not influence the graft survival significantly in the group that underwent nephrectomy. In contrast, patients without nephrectomy experienced better graft survival rates when re-transplantation was performed within one year after graft loss(P = 0.033). Age adjusted patient survival rates at 1 and 5 years were 94.1% and 86.3% vs 83.1% and 75.4% group NE+ and NE-, respectively(P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Transplant nephrectomy leads to a temporary increase in PRA levels that normalize before kidney re-transplantation. In patients without nephrectomy of a non-viable kidney graft timing of re-transplantation significantly influences graft survival after a second transplantation. Most importantly, transplant nephrectomy is associated with a significantly longer patient survival.
