The 5-HT2c receptor gene Cys23Ser polymorphism influences the intravaginal ejaculation latency time in dutch Caucasian men with lifelong premature ejaculation

It has been postulated that the persistent short intravaginal ejaculation latency time （IELT） of men with lifelong premature ejaculation （LPE） is related to 5-hydroxytryptamine （HT）2c receptor functioning. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship of Cys23Ser 5-HT2c receptor gene polymorphism and the duration of IELT in men with LPE. Therefore, a prospective study was conducted in 64 dutch Caucasian men with LPE. Baseline IELT during coitus was assessed by stopwatch over a 1-month period. All men were genotyped for Cys23Ser 5-HT2c receptor gene polymorphism. Allele frequencies and genotypes of Cys and Ser variants of 5-HT2c receptor gene polymorphism were determined. Association between Cys/Cys and Ser/Ser genotypes and the natural logarithm of the IELT in men with LPE ***. As a result, the geometric mean, median and natural mean IELT were 25.2, 27.0, 33.9s, respectively. Of all men, 20.0%, 10.8%, 23.1% and 41.5% ejaculated within 10, 10-20, 20-30 and 30-60s after vaginal penetration. Of the 64 men, the Cys/Cys and Ser/Ser genotype frequency for the Cys23Ser polymorphism of the 5-HT2c receptor gene was 81% and 19%, respectively. The geometric mean IELT of the wildtypes （Cys/Cys） is significantly lower （22.6s; 95% CI 18.3-27.8s） than in male homozygous mutants （Ser/Ser）（40.4s; 95% CI 20.3-80.4s）（P = 0.03）. It is concluded that Cys23Ser 5-HT2c receptor gene polymorphism is associated with the IELT in men with LPE. Men with Cys/Cys genotype have shorter IELTs than men with Ser/Ser genotypes.

We appreciate and thank drs Saitz and Serefoglu for their positive and sympathetic words on our article.1 Indeed, our genetic studies have shown that 5-HTTLPR polymorphism, 5-HT1A receptor gene polymorphism and 5-HT2c receptor gene polymorphism are associated with the duration of the intravaginal ejaculatory latency time in men with lifelong premature ejaculation. In line with the remarks） we hope that our stopwatch method will be used by other investigators to investigate the role of serotonergic gene polymorphisms on the duration of the intravaginal ejaculatory latency time.

dear Sir.With interest we have read the article of Ozbek et al. [ 1 ] regarding a possible association of the 5-HTTLPR gene polymorphism and lifelong premature ejaculation （PE） in Turkish men. However, by performing a reanalysis of their data in Table 1, we found major insufficiencies that seriously diminish the validity of their conclusion that there is a higher prevalence of SS genotype in men with lifelong PE. Apart from the fact that in Table 1, the total number of patients and controls should be 69 instead of 70, our reanalysis of their patient data showed that the observed number of genotypes in their patients is not in Hardy Weinberg equilibrium, as the authors have erroneously suggested. Robust reconstruction of curved line structures in noisy point clouds

Response of Solanum tuberosum to Myzus persicae infestation at different stages of foliage maturity

Young leaves of the potato Solanum tuberosum L. cultivar Kardal contain resistance factors to the green peach aphid Myzuspersicae （Sulzer）（Hemiptera： Aphididae） and normal probing behavior is impeded. However, M. persicae can survive and reproduce on mature and senescent leaves of the cv. Kardal plant without problems. We compared the settling ofM. persicae on young and old leaves and analyzed the impact of aphids settling on the plant in terms of gene expression. Settling, as measured by aphid numbers staying on young or old leaves, showed that after 21 h significantly fewer aphids were found on the young leaves. At earlier time points there were no difference between young and old leaves, suggesting that the young leaf resistance factors are not located at the surface level but deeper in the tissue. Gene expression was measured in plants at 96 h postinfestation, which is at a late stage in the interaction and in compatible interactions this is long enough for host plant acceptance to occur. In old leaves of cv. Kardal （compatible interaction）, M. persicae infestation elicited a higher number of differentially regulated genes than in young leaves. The plant response to aphid infestation included a larger number of genes induced than repressed, and the proportion of induced versus repressed genes was larger in young than in old leaves. Several genes changing expression seem to be involved in changing the metabolic state of the leaf from source to sink.

Evaluation of 1031 primary titanium nitride coated mobile bearing total knee arthroplasties in an orthopedic clinic

AIM To evaluate the influence of the titanium nitride(TiN) coating on the results of a total knee arthroplasty(TKA). METHOdS A total of 910 patients(338 men; 572 woman), with a mean age of 65(range 36-94) undergoing 1031 primary TKAs were assessed. Clinical evaluation and patientreported outcomes were gathered one year after surgery. The questionnaires included the Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score(KOOS)-dutch version, Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) pain scores in rest and during active knee movement, VAS-satisfaction scores, and EQ-5 d-3 L health scores. This was aimed to assess the overall knee function and patient satisfaction, and to enable us to make a gross comparison to other *** At a mean follow-up of 46 mo(range 1-92) the overall implant survival was 97.7% and 95.1% for any operative reason related to the implant. Twenty-three knees(2.2%) required revision surgery. Arthrofibrosis was the most common indication for a re-operation. The clinical evaluation and patient-reported outcomes revealed good to excellent patient satisfaction and function of the arthroplasty. The median postoperative VAS-pain scores on a scale of 0-100, at one year after surgery were 1 in rest and 2 during *** The Ti N coated, mobile bearing TKA results are excellent and similar to those of other widely used TKA designs. Residual pain of the knee remains a concern and the Ti N coating in combination with the mobile bearing does not seem to be the simple solution to this problem. Future research will have to show that the coating gives a better survival than the cobalt chrome version.

BACKGROUNd：Liver ischemia reperfusion（IR）injury triggers a systemic inflammatory response and is the main cause of organ dysfunction and adverse postoperative outcomes after liver ***（PTX）and hypertonic saline solution（HTS）have been identified to have beneficial effects against IR *** study aimed to investigate if the addition of PTX to HTS is superior to HTS alone for the prevention of liver IR ***： Male Wistar rats were allocated into three groups. Control rats underwent 60 minutes of partial liver ischemia, HTS rats were treated with 0.4 mL/kg of intravenous 7.5% NaCl 15 minutes before reperfusion, and HPTX group were treated with 7.5% NaC1 plus 25 mg/kg of PTX 15 minutes before reperfusion. Samples were collected after reperfusion for determination of ALT, AST, TNF-α, IL-6, IL-10, mitochondrial respiration, lipid peroxidation, pulmonary permeability and myeloperoxidase. RESULTS： HPTX significantly decreased TNF-α 30 minutes after reperfusion. HPTX and HTS significantly decreased ALT,AST, IL-6, mitochondrial dysfunction and pulmonary myelo- peroxidase 4 hours after reperfusion. Compared with HTS only, HPTX significantly decreased hepatic oxidative stress 4 hours after reperfusion and pulmonary permeability 4 and 12 hours after reperfusion. CONCLUSION： This study showed that PTX added the beneficial effects of HTS on liver IR injury through decreases of hepatic oxidative stress and pulmonary permeability.

Effect of Maruca vitrata （Lepidoptera： Crambidae） host plants on life-history parameters of the parasitoid Apanteles taragamae （Hymenoptera： Braconidae）

The effect of four host plant species of the herbivore Maruca vitrata Fabri- cius （Lepidoptera： Crambidae） on development time, longevity, fecundity and sex ratio of the parasitoid Apanteles taragamae Viereck （Hymenoptera： Braconidae） was investi- gated under laboratory conditions. The larvae were parasitized when in the second instar. Maruca vitrata larvae were fed with flowers of four legumes, that is, Vigna unguiculata （cowpea）, Sesbania rostrata, Lonchocarpus sericeus and Pterocarpus santalinoides, or an artificial diet both before and after parasitization. The parasitoid did not develop in hosts feeding on L. sericeus or E unguiculata at 25℃, or on P. santalinoides at 25℃ or 29℃. Apanteles taragamae had the shortest development time on artificial diet at both 25℃ and 29℃ while the longest development time was recorded on L. sericeus at 29℃. Female wasps took longer to develop compared to males at the two temperatures, regardless of the feeding substrate of their host. The longevity of the wasps at 25℃ varied among feeding substrates, but not at 29℃. Survival rate of parasitized larvae depends on the feeding sub- strate. Moreover, infection of host larvae with Maruca vitrata multi-nucleopolyhedrovirus （MaviMNPV） killed larger proportions of parasitized larvae at 25℃ than at 29℃, which was likely caused by the difference in parasitoid developmental rate. The proportion of female parasitoids was lowest on L. sericeus. The daily fecundity showed a nonlinear trend regardless of the feeding substrate, indicating that A. taragamae is a pro-ovigenic species. The data support the slow growth-high mortality hypothesis.
