The use of Urban Solid Waste (USW) as sources of energy has acquired rising importance in current discussions of alternative energy supplies, in particular in Brazil. This paper brings to these discussions an examination of the concept of solid wastes, including their historic origins and formation, taking their social, economic and cultural characteristics into account, including point view of waste production liturgy. Consequently, a spendthrift society slanted towards the decreasing marginal utility of assets must make efficient use of its USW in order to reduce excessive output. Besides that, this document presents the Brazilian potential of urban solid waste to produce electric power.

The purpose of this work is to present state of the art mass balances closing strategies in ore treatment plants to report metal accounting in a reliable manner. The current methodology is based on usage of an expert system which seizes and filters the plant data, analyses situations of equipment stops and mostly instruments failures. It is still possible to internally create a strategy to check the data of an instrument failure. The system is coupled to software with a Lagrangian model of mass balance closure that receives the pre-treated data. Thus, the data goes through filtering and reconciling processes to generate a reliable mass balance of the ore treatment plant. This made it possible to obtain a system that is able to tell the real productivity of an ore plant through reliable mass balances. Residence times on equipment are critical to the balance, thus, they require good logic to eliminate errors due to the characteristics of non-steady state. Among the next challenges is the inclusion of a soft sensor as a replacement of an instrument required for mass balance closure.

BACKGROUND Intestinal ischemia has been described in case reports of patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)disease(coronavirus disease 19,COVID-19).AIM To define the clinical and histological,characteristics,as well as the outcome of ischemic gastrointestinal manifestations of SARS-CoV-2 *** A structured retrospective collection was promoted among three tertiary referral centres during the first wave of the pandemic in northern ***,radiological,endoscopic and histological data of patients hospitalized for COVID-19 between marc. 1st and May 30th were *** diagnosis was established by consecutive analysis of all abdominal computed tomography(CT)scans *** Among 2929 patients,21(0.7%)showed gastrointestinal ischemic manifestations either as presenting symptom or during *** CT showed bowel distention in 6 patients while signs of colitis/enteritis in *** patients presented thrombosis of main abdominal ***,when feasible,confirmed the diagnosis(6 patients).Surgical resection was necessary in 4/21 *** tissue examination showed distinctive features of endothelial inflammation in the small bowel and *** hospital stay was 9 d with a mortality rate of 39%.CONCLUSION Gastrointestinal ischemia represents a rare manifestation of COVID-19.A high index of suspicion should lead to investigate this complication by CT scan,in the attempt to reduce its high mortality *** shows atypical feature of ischemia with important endotheliitis,probably linked to thrombotic microangiopathies.

Sphaeranthus indicus: Traditional Wisdom to Modern Medicine—An Orally Active, Potent Cytokine Inhibitor for the Management of Inflammatory Disorders

Tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) is a key regulator of the inflammatory and tissue destruc-tive pathways in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The clinical success of anti-TNF-α and an-ti-IL-17 biologics has validated the concept that cytokine blockade is beneficial in RA. However, as these drugs are parenterally administered, our efforts are directed at identifying a novel orally active TNF-α inhibitor with a therapeutic profile similar to that of biologics. Since plants are natural immunomodulators, we explored the immunomodulatory potential of Sphaeranthus indicus extract. In our studies, the extract dose-dependently inhibited the release of cytokines in stimulated human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (hPBMCs), and their spontaneous release in synovial cells derived from patients suffering from RA. TNF-α and IFN-γ induced release of p40 subunit of IL-12/ IL-23, and p19 subunit of IL-23 in differentiated THP-1 cells is potently blocked. The expression of endothelial cell adhesion molecules in TNF-α-stimulated HUVecs was also potently inhibited. The oral treatment significantly and dose-dependently reduced LPS-induced TNF-α and IL-1β production in mice. Disease regression was seen in collagen-induced arthritis in DBA/1J mice, which was validated along with radiological and histopathological evaluation. Therefore, the extract of Sphaeranthus indicus could be used in the management of inflammatory conditions.

Spatially-explicit estimation of aboveground biomass （AGB） plays an important role to generate action policies focused in climate change mitigation, since carbon （C） retained in the biomass is vital for regulating Earth＇s temperature. This work estimates AGB using both chlorophyll （red, near infrared） and moisture （middle infrared） based normalized vegetation indices constructed with MCD43A4 MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer （MODIS） and MOD44B vegetation continuous fields （VCF） data. The study area is located in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, a region that comprises a part of the upper limit of the intertropical zone. AGB estimations were made using both individual tree data from the National Forest Inventory of Mexico and allometric equations reported in scientific literature. Linear and nonlinear （expo- nential） models were fitted to find their predictive potential when using satellite spectral data as explanatory variables. Highly-significant correlations （p = 0.01 ） were found between all the explaining variables tested. NDVI62, linked to chlorophyll content and moisture stress, showed the highest correlation. The best model （nonlinear） showed an index of fit （Pseudo - r2） equal to 0.77 and a root mean square error equal to 26.00 Mg/ha using NDVI62 and VCF as explanatory variables. Validation correlation coefficients were similar for both models： linear （r = 0.87＊＊） and nonlinear （r = 0.86＊＊）.

COVID-19 is a new challenge in clinical medicine. Although typical presentations include fever and pneumonia, we describe a case of COVID-19 presenting with neurological symptoms of encephalitis and infectious-related syndrome of inappropriate anti-diuretic hormone secretion. Because of the epidemic health problems, it is crucial to identify these patients as early as possible to follow the isolation procedures. We suggest that unclear neurological clinical presentations of patients should be considered for COVID-19.

AIM: To investigate the effects of bariatric surgery on metabolic parameters, incretin hormone secretion, and duodenal and ileal mucosal gene ***: Nine patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM), chronic serum hyperglycemia for more than2 years, and a body mass index(BMI) of 30-35 kg/m2 underwent metabolic surgery sleeve gastrectomy with transit bipartition between May 2011 and December2011. Blood samples were collected pre and 3, 6 and12 mo postsurgery. Duodenal and ileal mucosa samples were collected pre- and 3 mo postsurgery. Pre- and postoperative blood samples were collected in the fasting state before ingestion of a standard meal(520kcal) and again 30, 60, 90, and 120 min after the mealto determine hemoglobin A1c(HbA1c) levels and the lipid profile, which consisted of triglyceride and total cholesterol levels. Intestinal gene expression of p53 and transforming growth factor(TGF)-β was analyzed using quantitative reverse-transcription PCR. Gastric inhibitory polypeptide(GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1(GLP-1)were quantified using the enzyme-linked immunoassay method and analyzed pre- and ***'s t test or repeated measurements analysis of variance with Bonferroni corrections were performed as ***: BMI values decreased by 15.7% within the initial 3 mo after surgery(31.29 ± 0.73 vs 26.398± 0.68, P ecreased(59%)(269.55 ±18.24 mg/dL vs 100.77 ± 3.13 mg/dL, P < 0.05)with no further significant changes at 6 or 12 mo postoperatively. The use of the extraordinary hydroelectric potential of the Amazon Basin originated an increase in the offer of renewable energy in Brazil, which, in its turn, leads to conflicts and a lack of consensus among different players owing to the potential negative impacts related to the construction and operation of large hydroelectric power plants in relatively well preserved areas. In this context, environmental licensing is one of the national environmental policy’s main instruments for making decisions regarding the use of the hydroelectric potential, especially the rivers of the Amazon Basin. Nevertheless, this significant instrument has its limitations and requires adjustments in order to better aid the decision making process regarding the use of water resources and land with the goal of increasing the offer of electric energy.

The generation of heliothermal electricity has received increasing attention throughout the world in countries such as Spain, the USA, Germany and many others. In Brazil, this type of energy generation in the form of large projects (above 80 MW) remains unexplored. However, it is known that in the country, there are extensive areas of normal direct irradiation with high intensity and a low seasonality factor, especially in the semiarid regions in Brazil, mainly the North and Northeast of Minas Gerais. Moreover, these Minas Gerais regions have other significant characteristics for the installation of these plants: proximity to transmission lines, flatness, the fact that the respective vegetation is not endangered, a suitable land use profile (availability of land not used in agriculture), low wind speed, low population density, and, most recently, an increase in the demand for local electric energy due to the economic growth above the Brazilian average rate. Furthermore, the introduction of solar plants in that region, due to its distributed nature, will bring development and growth to the region (normally poor) by generating employment and income. This article presents a study of the optimal location of thermoelectric plants in the semiarid regions of Minas Gerais, conducted with Geographical Information System (GIS) technology. GIS consists of a set of specialised resources that allow the manipulation of spatial data, bringing efficiency and agility in the identification of suitable places for the installation of solar plants, while simultaneously enabling the consideration of future scenarios for energy planning, with its respective impact, costs and benefits. The study has identified very promising solar irradiation levels for the electric generation by solar energy, whether thermoelectric or photovoltaic, reaching an annual solar irradiation of 2700 kWh/m2 in the summer and in the range of 2200 - 2400 kWh/m2 on an annual basis.
