Comparison of Air Pollution−Mortality Associations Using Observed Particulate Matter Concentrations and Reanalysis Data in 33 Spanish Cities

Air pollution poses a health hazard in all ***,complete data on ambient particulate matter(PM)concentrations are not available in all world *** data is already a valuable source of exposure data in epidemiological studies examining the relationship between temperature and ***,the performance of reanalysis data in assessing the short-term health effects of particulate air pollution remains *** assessed the performance of CAMS reanalysis(EAC4)data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts,compared with daily PM concentrations from field monitoring stations,to estimate short-term exposure to PM with an aerodynamic diameter less than 10μm(PM_(10))on daily mortality in 33 Spanish provincial capital cities using a two-stage time series regression *** shape of the PM_(10)distribution varied substantially between PM observations and CAMS global reanalysis of atmospheric composition(EAC4)reanalysis data,with correlation ranging from 0.21 to *** pooled mortality risk for a 10μg/m^(3)increase in PM_(10)showed similar estimates using PM concentrations{relative risks(RR)=1.007,95%confidence intervals(95%CI)=[1.002,1.011]}and EAC4 reanalysis data(RR=1.011,95%CI=[1.006,1.015]).However,the city-specific PM_(10)beta coefficients estimated using PM concentrations and EAC4 reanalysis data showed a low correlation(r=0.22).The use of reanalysis data should be approached with caution when assessing the association between particulate matter air pollution and health outcomes,particularly in cities with small populations.

Maxillofacial Surgery Education: Where Is It Heading?

Oral and maxillofacial surgery have a long history dating back to ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians. Since then, surgeons have treated craniofacial trauma and alveolodental fractures. In 1846, Hullihen performed a mandibular body osteotomy to correct prognathism, marking a significant milestone in the field. Over time, the specialty has evolved significantly. The field of craniofacial surgery has undergone several phases, including its involvement in conflicts during world wars and the treatment of craniofacial fractures and discrepancies. The process of learning and teaching specialties has evolved differently in various countries throughout the 20th century. Currently, there is no uniformity in the training and registration of specialized professionals, resulting in distinct scenarios. Considering the accessibility of scientific knowledge through technology and globalization, it is crucial to provide an objective overview of the current state of education in the field. This paper focuses on effective professional training as the primary subject of residency courses in this specialty. A proposal is presented for education, emphasizing the significance of providing quality professional training that is tailored to the specific legislation of each country.

Tree height (H) in a natural stand or forest plantation is a fundamental variable in management, and the use of mathematical expressions that estimate H as a function of diameter at breast height (d) or variables at the stand level is a valuable support tool in forest inventories. The objective was to fit and propose a generalized H-d model for Pinus montezumae and Pinus pseudostrobus established in forest plantations of Nuevo San Juan Parangaricutiro, Michoacan, Mexico. Using nonlinear least squares (NLS), 10 generalized H-d models were fitted to 883 and 1226 pairs of H-d data from Pinus montezumae and Pinus pseudostrobus, respectively. The best model was refitted with the maximum likelihood mixed effects model (MEM) approach by including the site as a classification variable and a known variance structure. The Wang and Tang equation was selected as the best model with NLS;the MEM with an additive effect on two of its parameters and an exponential variance function improved the fit statistics for Pinus montezumae and Pinus pseudostrobus, respectively. The model validation showed equality of means among the estimates for both species and an independent subsample. The calibration of the MEM at the plot level was efficient and might increase the applicability of these results. The inclusion of dominant height in the MEM approach helped to reduce bias in the estimates and also to better explain the variability among plots.

The treatment of nonhealing and chronic cutaneous wounds still needs a clinical advancement to be *** mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs),obtained from different sources,and their secretome derived thereof(especially exosomes)can activate signaling pathways related to promotion of cell migration,vascularization,collagen deposition,and inflammatory response demonstrating prohealing,angiogenetic and anti-scarring *** the other hand,biodegradable biomimetic scaffolds can facilitate endogenous cell attachment and proliferation as well as extracellular matrix *** this Review,we revise the complex composites made by biomimetic scaffolds,mainly hydrogels,and MSC-derived exosomes constructed for cutaneous wound *** demonstrate that there exists a synergistic action of scaffolds with encapsulated exosomes,displaying a sustained release profiles to facilitate longlasting healing *** can be envisioned that dressings made by biomimetic hydrogels and MSC-derived exosomes will be clinically applied in the near future for the effective treatment of nonhealing and chronic wounds.

In previous study, we demonstrated that the specific activity of D-glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH, ec 1.***.1.12) in skeletal muscle of induced hibernating jerboa (hibernating GAPDH) was 3-4 folds lower than that of the one in the skeletal muscle of the euthermic jerboa (euthermic GAPDH). A significant decrease in both GAPDH protein and GapC mRNA levels occurs when hibernating, but the purified hibernating GAPDH is less active than the euthermic GAPDH. To investigate the physico-chemical basis of this lower activity, the behaviour during thermal inactivation of skeletal muscle GAPDH from hibernating and euthermic tissues was examined by a variety of spectroscopic techniques, including fluorescence emission, circular dichroism and ultraviolet absorption. A clear resistance to thermal denaturation was observed in the hibernating GAPDH compared with the euthermic GAPDH. The different temperature of denaturation found in these proteins by both fluorimetry and circular dichroism indicates that there might exist conformational changes of GAPDH upon hibernation that could affect the stability of this enzyme.

Compressing deep-quaternion neural networks with targeted regularisation

In recent years,hyper-complex deep networks(such as complex-valued and quaternion-valued neural networks–QVNNs)have received a renewed interest in the *** find applications in multiple fields,ranging from image reconstruction to 3D audio *** to their real-valued counterparts,quaternion neural networks require custom regularisation strategies to avoid *** addition,for many real-world applications and embedded implementations,there is the need of designing sufficiently compact networks,with few weights and ***,the problem of regularising and/or sparsifying QVNNs has not been properly addressed in the literature as of *** this study,the authors show how to address both problems by designing targeted regularisation strategies,which can minimise the number of connections and neurons of the network during *** this end,they investigate two extensions of ℓ1 and structured regularisations to the quaternion *** the authors’experimental evaluation,they show that these tailored strategies significantly outperform classical(realvalued)regularisation approaches,resulting in small networks especially suitable for low-power and real-time applications.

Total plasma homocysteine and methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase C677T polymorphism in patients with colorectal carcinoma

AIM: To investigate the behaviour of total plasma homocysteine (tHcy) and its most common genetic determinant defect, the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase C677T (C677TMTHFR) polymorphism in patients with early stage colorectal carcinoma. METHODS: tHcy was quantified by Abbott IMx immunoassay; screening for C677TMTHFR substitution was performed by PCR and restriction analysis. RESULTS: The frequency of the C/T and T/T genotypes of the C677TMTHFR gene polymorphism did not differ between the groups. The mean tHcy was statistically higher in cancer patients than in control subjects carrying the same C/C or C/T genotype, whereas there was no difference in the T/T homozygous carriers of the two groups. tHcy was significantly higher in the T/T homozygous carriers than in C/C and C/T genotype carriers. CONCLUSION: The statistically significant increase of tHcy observed in C/C and C/T genotype carriers among our cancer patients is related to substrate consumption dependent on the tumor cell proliferation rate, whereas the tHcy increase observed in T/T genotype carriers of both groups probably depends on the enzymatic deficit of the homocysteine conversion to methionine and/or on the folate deficiency.

Comprehensive control for unified power quality conditioners

This paper presents a comprehensive control strategy for unified power quality conditioners(UPQCs) to compensate for both voltage and current quality *** controllers for the series and shunt components of the UPQC are, equally, divided into three blocks: à main controller, which deals with the fundamental-frequency issues such as active and reactive power flow;` harmonic controller, which ensures zero-error tracking while compensating voltage and current harmonics;′ the set-point generation block, which handles the different control objectives of the UPQC. The controller design procedure has been simplified to the selection of three parameters for each converter. Furthermore, the proposed strategy can be implemented measuring only four variables, which represents a reasonable number of sensors. In addition, a pulse width modulation(PWM)-based modulation with fixed switching frequency is used for both converters. The proposed control strategy has been validated experimentally under different conditions, including grid-frequency variations.
