Understanding the initial use stage of cement mortar lining in drinking water distribution systems:Silicon and aluminum as stability indicators

The cement mortar lining(CML)of commonly used ductile iron pipes can severely deteriorate the drinking water quality at the initial stage of use,but the behavioral characteristics of different elements release from the CML in this stage is still *** this study,dynamic immersion experiments with new cement mortar lined ductile iron pipe reactors were conducted under different feed water hardness and alkalinity *** results showed that the release of alkaline substances from the CML at the initial stage of use could strongly influence the pH of water,which consequently greatly impacted the release/precipitation behaviors of calcium,aluminum and *** pH and aluminum concentration of the effluent water could reach 11.5 and 700μg/L within 24 hr of hydraulic retention time,respectively,under conditions of relatively lower hardness and *** to the pH elevation,calcium carbonate precipitation could occur even at much lower feed water *** the aluminum and silicon could keep release from the CML in soluble form at different hardness and alkalinity levels,and their release rate depended on the amount of calcium carbonate ***,aluminum and silicon were more suitable as indicators of the corrosion intensity at the initial stage of CML use rather than the traditional calcium carbonate precipitation *** feed water hardness and alkalinity levels for mitigating the initial intense corrosion of CML were proposed:hardness>40 mg/L(CaCO_(3)),alkalinity>100 mg/L(CaCO_(3)).

Full Dynamic Model for Liquid Sloshing Simulation in Cylindrical Tank Shape

This study presents a comprehensive full dynamic model designed for simulating liquid sloshing behavior within cylindrical tank structures. The model employs a discretization approach, representing the liquid as a network of interconnected spring-damper-mass systems. Key aspects include the adaptation of liquid discretization techniques to cylindrical lateral cross-sections and the calculation of stiffness and damping coefficients. External forces, simulating various vehicle maneuvers, are also integrated into the model. The resulting system of equations is solved using Maple Software with the Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg method. This model enables accurate prediction of liquid displacement and pressure forces, offering valuable insights for tank design and fluid dynamics applications. Ongoing refinement aims to broaden its applicability across different liquid types and tank geometries.

Structural and chemical transformations of CuZn alloy nanoparticles under reactive redox atmospheres:An in situ TEM study

Alloying metals to form intermetallics has been proven effective in tuning the chemical properties of metal-based ***,intermetallic alloys can undergo structural and chemical transformations under reactive conditions,leading to changes in their catalytic *** and understanding these transformations are crucial for establishing relevant structureperformance relationships and for the rational design of alloy-based *** this work,we used CuZn alloy nanoparticles(NPs)as a model material system and employed in situ transmission electron microscopy(TEM)to investigate the structural and chemical changes of CuZn NPs under H_(2),O_(2)and their *** results show how CuZn NPs undergo sequential transformations in the gas mixture at elevated temperatures,starting with gradual leaching and segregation of Zn,followed by oxidation at the NP *** remaining copper at the core of particles can then engage in dynamic behavior,eventually freeing itself from the zinc oxide *** structural dynamics arises from an oscillatory phase transition between Cu and Cu_(2)O and is correlated with the catalytic water formation,as confirmed by in situ mass spectrometry(MS).Under pure H_(2)or O_(2)atmosphere,we observe different structural evolution pathways and final chemical states of CuZn NPs compared to those in the gas *** results clearly demonstrate that the chemical state of alloy NPs can vary considerably under reactive redox atmospheres,particularly for those containing elements with distinct redox properties,necessitating the use of in situ or detailed ex situ characterizations to gain relevant insights into the states of intermetallic alloy-based catalysts and structure-activity relationships.

Urchin-like Na-doped zinc oxide nanoneedles for low-concentration and exclusive VOC detections

In the early-stage diagnosis of lung cancer,the low-concentration(<5 ppm)volatile organic compounds(VOCs)are extensively identified to be the biomarkers for breath ***,the urchin-like sodium(Na)-doped zinc oxide(ZnO)nanoneedles were synthesized through a hydrothermal strategy with the addition of different contents of citric *** Na-doped ZnO gas sensor with a 3:1 molar ratio of Na^(+)and citric acid showed outstanding sensing properties with an optimal selectivity to various VOCs(formaldehyde(HCOH),isopropanol,acetone,and ammonia)based on working temperature ***,significantly enhanced sensitivity(21.3@5 ppm)compared with pristine ZnO(~7-fold),low limit of detection(LOD)(298 ppb),robust humidity resistance,and long-term stability of formaldehyde sensing performances were obtained,which can be attributed to the formation of a higher concentration of oxygen vacancies(20.98%)and the active electron ***,the improved sensing mechanism was demonstrated by the exquisite band structure and introduction of the additional acceptor level,which resulted in the narrowed bandgap of ZnO.

Complication rates after direct anterior vs posterior approach for hip hemiarthroplasty in elderly individuals with femoral neck fractures

BACKGROUND Dislocation rates after hemiarthroplasty reportedly vary from 1%to 17%.This serious complication is associated with increased morbidity and mortality *** to this surgery are still debated,with no consensus regarding the superiority of any single *** To compare early postoperative complications after implementing the direct anterior and posterior approaches(PL)for hip hemiarthroplasty after femoral neck *** This is a comparative,retrospective,single-center cohort study conducted at a university *** march 2008 and December 2018,273 patients(a total of 280 hips)underwent bipolar hemiarthroplasties(n=280)for displaced femoral neck fractures using either the PL(n=171)or the minimally invasive direct anterior approach(DAA)(n=109).The choice of approach was related to the surgeons’practices;the implant types were similar and unrelated to the *** rates and other complications were reviewed after a minimum followup of 6 *** Both treatment groups had similarly aged patients(mean age:82 years),sex ratios,patient body mass indexes,and patient *** data(surgery delay time,operative time,and blood loss volume)did not differ significantly between the *** 30 d mortality rate was higher in the PL group(9.9%)than in the DAA group(3.7%),but the difference was not statistically significant(P=0.052).Among the one-month survivors,a significantly higher rate of dislocation was observed in the PL group(14/154;9.1%)than in the DAA group(0/105;0%)(P=0.002).Of the 14 patients with dislocation,8 underwent revision surgery for recurrent instability(posterior group),and one of them had 2 additional procedures due to a deep *** rate of other complications(e.g.,perioperative and early postoperative periprosthetic fractures and infection-related complications)did not differ significantly between the *** These findings suggest that the DAA to bipolar hemiarthroplasty f

Impact of inorganic and organic pollutants from a Belgian wastewater treatment plant on adjacent surface and groundwaters

Chromatin condensation but not DNA integrity of pig sperm is greater in the sperm-rich fraction

Background Protamination and condensation of sperm chromatin as well as DNA integrity play an essential role during fertilization and embryo *** some mammals,like pigs,ejaculates are emitted in three separate fractions:pre-sperm,sperm-rich(SRF)and post sperm-rich(PSRF).These fractions are known to vary in volume,sperm concentration and quality,as well as in the origin and composition of seminal plasma(SP),with differences being also observed within the SRF ***,whether disparities in the DNA integrity and chromatin condensation and pro-tamination of their sperm exist has not been *** This study determined chromatin protamination(Chromomycin A3 test,CMA_(3)),condensation(Dibromobi-mane test,DBB),and DNA integrity(Comet assay)in the pig sperm contained in the first 10 m L of the SRF(SRF-P1),the remaining portion of the sperm-rich fraction(SRF-P2),and the post sperm-rich fraction(PSRF).While chromatin protamination was found to be similar between the different ejaculate fractions(P>0.05),chromatin condensation was seen to be greater in SRF-P1 and SRF-P2 than in the PSRF(P=0.018 and P=0.004,respectively).Regarding DNA integrity,no differences between fractions were observed(P>0.05).As the SRF-P1 has the highest sperm concentra-tion and ejaculate fractions are known to differ in antioxidant composition,the oxidative stress index(OSi)in SP,calcu-lated as total oxidant activity divided by total antioxidant capacity,was tested and confirmed to be higher in the SRF-P1 than in SRF-P2 and PSRF(0.42±0.06 vs.0.23±0.09 and 0.08±0.00,respectively;Pjaculate fractions,SRF-P1 and SRF-P2 were observed to exhibit greater chromatin condensation than the *** could be related to the OSi of each fraction.
