Angiosperms represent most plants that humans cultivate,grow,and eat.However,angiosperms are only one of five major land plant lineages.As a whole lineage,plants also include algal groups.All these clades represent a tremendous genetic diversity that can be investigated to reveal the evolutionary history of any given mechanism.In this review,we describe the current model of the plant immune system,discuss its evolution based on the recent literature,and propose future directions for the field.In angiosperms,plant–microbe interactions have been intensively studied,revealing essential cell surface and intracellular immune receptors,as well as metabolic and hormonal defense pathways.Exploring diversity at the genomic and functional levels demonstrates the conservation of these pathways across land plants,some of which are beyond plants.On basis of the conserved mechanisms,lineage-specific variations have occurred,leading to diversified reservoirs of immune mechanisms.In rare cases,this diversity has been harnessed and successfully transferred to other species by integration of wild immune receptors or engineering of novel forms of receptors for improved resistance to pathogens.We propose that exploring further the diversity of immune mechanisms in the whole plant lineage will reveal completely novel sources of resistance to be deployed in crops.

Modeling displacement flow inside a full-length casing string for well cementing

While computer modeling of annular displacement efficiency is widely applied in cementing engineering,modeling the displacement flow inside a casing or drill string for cementing operations has received less attention.Although predicting displacement efficiency inside a full-length pipe is desired by cementing engineers,the attempt of developing a model with both efficiency and accuracy faces challenges.Access to computer simulators for this purpose is limited.Compared with annular flow,the displacement flow inside pipe,although within a simpler geometry and without eccentricity effect,is not simpler in physics,modelling strategy and predictability,because a variety of flow patterns and flow instabilities can develop to create complicated fluid interfaces.In this paper,we present an integrated numerical model developed to simulate displacement flows inside a full-length pipe,which connects an existing annulus model to enable complete displacement simulations of cementing jobs.The model uses three-dimensional grid to solve fluid concentrations with degrees of mixing,and incorporates flow instability detection and flow regime determination.Applied in cementing,the model accounts for effects of pumping rate,well inclination,pipe rotation,fluid densities,rheological parameters and more.This computationally efficient model does not rely on high-resolution mesh as often required by conventional Computational Fluid Dynamics models,thus it is suitable to be implemented in a cementing software for daily use by well cementing engineers.The methodology of the model is discussed in detail in this paper.To validate the model,we examine simulation results against experimental results obtained in our laboratory tests and CFD simulations;acceptable agreement is found under different testing conditions.We also presented two case studies of real cementing jobs with cement evaluation logs compared to simulation results,showing that the model can predict consistent displacement efficiency results.

Understanding the initial use stage of cement mortar lining in drinking water distribution systems:Silicon and aluminum as stability indicators

The cement mortar lining(CML)of commonly used ductile iron pipes can severely deteriorate the drinking water quality at the initial stage of use,but the behavioral characteristics of different elements release from the CML in this stage is still unclear.In this study,dynamic immersion experiments with new cement mortar lined ductile iron pipe reactors were conducted under different feed water hardness and alkalinity conditions.The results showed that the release of alkaline substances from the CML at the initial stage of use could strongly influence the pH of water,which consequently greatly impacted the release/precipitation behaviors of calcium,aluminum and silicon.The pH and aluminum concentration of the effluent water could reach 11.5 and 700μg/L within 24 hr of hydraulic retention time,respectively,under conditions of relatively lower hardness and alkalinity.Due to the pH elevation,calcium carbonate precipitation could occur even at much lower feed water alkalinity.Whereas the aluminum and silicon could keep release from the CML in soluble form at different hardness and alkalinity levels,and their release rate depended on the amount of calcium carbonate precipitation.Thus,aluminum and silicon were more suitable as indicators of the corrosion intensity at the initial stage of CML use rather than the traditional calcium carbonate precipitation potential.Appropriate feed water hardness and alkalinity levels for mitigating the initial intense corrosion of CML were proposed:hardness>40 mg/L(CaCO_(3)),alkalinity>100 mg/L(CaCO_(3)).

This paper proposes a numerical method to analyze the ice protection capability and predict the power requirements of a piezoelectric resonant de-icing system.The method is based on a coupled electro-mechanical finite element analysis which enables the fast computation of the modes of resonance of interest to de-ice curved surfaces and the estimation of the input voltage and current required for a given configuration(defined by its mode,actuator location,ice deposit,etc.).Eventually,the electric power to be supplied can be also assessed.The method is applied to a NACA 0024 leading edge equipped with piezoelectric actuators.First,two extension modes are analyzed and compared with respect to their efficiency and power requirements.Then,tests are carried out in an icing tunnel to verify the effectiveness of the piezoelectric ice protection system and the predictions of the maximal required power.The system allows de-icing the leading edge in less than 2 s for a glaze ice deposit.

Bioinspired supramolecular macrocycle hybrid membranes with enhanced proton conductivity

Enhancing the proton conductivity of proton exchange membranes(PEMs)is essential to expand the applications of proton exchange membrane fuel cells(PEMFCs).Inspired by the proton conduction mechanism of bacteriorhodopsin,cucurbit[n]urils(CB[n],where n is the number of glycoluril units,n=6,7,or 8)are introduced into sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone)(SPEEK)matrix to fabricate hybrid PEMs,employing a nature-inspired chemical engineering(NICE)methodology.The carbonyl groups of CB[n]act as proton-conducting sites,while the host–guest interaction between CB[n]and water molecules offers extra protonconducting pathways.Additionally,the molecular size of CB[n]aids in their dispersion within the SPEEK matrix,effectively bridging the unconnected proton-conducting sulfonic group domains within the SPEEK membrane.Consequently,all hybrid membranes exhibit significantly enhanced proton conductivity.Notably,the SPEEK membrane incorporating 1 wt.%CB[8](CB[8]/SPEEK-1%)demonstrates the highest proton conductivity of 198.0 mS·cm^(−1) at 60°C and 100%relative humidity(RH),which is 228%greater than that of the pure SPEEK membrane under the same conditions.Moreover,hybrid membranes exhibit superior fuel cell performance.The CB[8]/SPEEK-1%membrane achieves a maximum power density of 214 mW·cm^(−2),representing a 140%improvement over the pure SPEEK membrane(89 mW·cm^(−2))at 50°C and 100%RH.These findings serve as a foundation for constructing continuous proton-conducting pathways within membranes by utilizing supramolecular macrocycles as fuel cell electrolytes and in other applications.

Poly(lactide-co-glycolide acid)(PLGA) is an extraordinary well-described polymer and has excellent pharmaceutical properties like high biocompatibility and good biodegradability. Hence, it is one of the most used materials for drug delivery and biomedical systems, also being present in several US Food and Drug Administration-approved carrier systems and therapeutic devices. For both applications, the quantification of the polymer is inalienable. During the development of a production process, parameters like yield or loading efficacy are essential to be determined. Although PLGA is a well-defined biomaterial,it still lacks a sensitive and convenient quantification approach for PLGA-based systems. Thus, we present a novel method for the fast and precise quantification of PLGA by RP-HPLC. The polymer is hydrolyzed into its monomers, glycolic acid and lactic acid. Afterwards, the monomers are derivatized with the absorption-enhancing molecule 2,4′-dibromoacetophenone. Furthermore, the wavelength of the derivatized monomers is shifted to higher wavelengths, where the used solvents show a lower absorption,increasing the sensitivity and detectability. The developed method has a detection limit of 0.1 mg/mL,enabling the quantification of low amounts of PLGA. By quantifying both monomers separately, information about the PLGA monomer ratio can be also directly obtained, being relevant for degradation behavior. Compared to existing approaches, like gravimetric or nuclear magnetic resonance measurements, which are tedious or expensive, the developed method is fast, ideal for routine screening, and it is selective since no stabilizer or excipient is interfering. Due to the high sensitivity and rapidity of the method, it is suitable for both laboratory and industrial uses.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)is recognized as a serious public health concern with a considerable impact on human life,long-term health expenditures,and substantial health losses.In this context,the use of dietary polyphenols to prevent and manage T2DM is widely documented.These dietary compounds exert their beneficial effects through several actions,including the protection of pancreatic islet β-cell,the antioxidant capacities of these molecules,their effects on insulin secretion and actions,the regulation of intestinal microbiota,and their contribution to ameliorate diabetic complications,particularly those of vascular origin.In the present review,we intend to highlight these multifaceted actions and the molecular mechanisms by which these plant-derived secondary metabolites exert their beneficial effects on type 2 diabetes patients.

High rate of clinically relevant improvement following anatomical total shoulder arthroplasty for glenohumeral osteoarthritis

BACKGROUND The minimal clinically important difference(MCID)is defined as the smallest meaningful change in a health domain that a patient would identify as important.Thus,an improvement that exceeds the MCID can be used to define a successful treatment for the individual patient.AIM To quantify the rate of clinical improvement following anatomical total shoulder arthroplasty for glenohumeral osteoarthritis.METHODS Patients were treated with the Global Unite total shoulder platform arthroplasty between march 2017 and February 2019 at Herlev and Gentofte Hospital,Denmark.The patients were evaluated preoperatively and 3 months,6 months,12 months,and 24 months postoperatively using the Western Ontario Osteoarthritis of the Shoulder index(WOOS),Oxford Shoulder Score(OSS)and Constant-Murley Score(CMS).The rate of clinically relevant improvement was defined as the proportion of patients who had an improvement 24 months postoperatively that exceeded the MCID.Based on previous literature,MCID for WOOS,OSS,and CMS were defined as 12.3,4.3,and 12.8 respectively.RESULTS Forty-nine patients with a Global Unite total shoulder platform arthroplasty were included for the final analysis.Mean age at the time of surgery was 66 years(range 49.0-79.0,SD:8.3)and 65%were women.One patient was revised within the two years follow-up.The mean improvement from the preoperative assessment to the two-year follow-up was 46.1 points[95%confidence interval(95%CI):39.7-53.3,P<0.005]for WOOS,18.2 points(95%CI:15.5-21.0,P<0.005)for OSS and 37.8 points(95%CI:31.5-44.0,P<0.005)for CMS.Two years postoperatively,41 patients(87%)had an improvement in WOOS that exceeded the MCID,45 patients(94%)had an improvement in OSS that exceeded the MCID,and 42 patients(88%)had an improvement in CMS that exceeded the MCID.CONCLUSION Based on three shoulder-specific outcome measures we find that approximately 90%of patients has a clinically relevant improvement.This is a clear message when informing patients about their prognosis.

BACKGROUND Dislocation rates after hemiarthroplasty reportedly vary from 1%to 17%.This serious complication is associated with increased morbidity and mortality rates.Approaches to this surgery are still debated,with no consensus regarding the superiority of any single approach.AIM To compare early postoperative complications after implementing the direct anterior and posterior approaches(PL)for hip hemiarthroplasty after femoral neck fractures.METHODS This is a comparative,retrospective,single-center cohort study conducted at a university hospital.Between march 2008 and December 2018,273 patients(a total of 280 hips)underwent bipolar hemiarthroplasties(n=280)for displaced femoral neck fractures using either the PL(n=171)or the minimally invasive direct anterior approach(DAA)(n=109).The choice of approach was related to the surgeons’practices;the implant types were similar and unrelated to the approach.Dislocation rates and other complications were reviewed after a minimum followup of 6 mo.RESULTS Both treatment groups had similarly aged patients(mean age:82 years),sex ratios,patient body mass indexes,and patient comorbidities.Surgical data(surgery delay time,operative time,and blood loss volume)did not differ significantly between the groups.The 30 d mortality rate was higher in the PL group(9.9%)than in the DAA group(3.7%),but the difference was not statistically significant(P=0.052).Among the one-month survivors,a significantly higher rate of dislocation was observed in the PL group(14/154;9.1%)than in the DAA group(0/105;0%)(P=0.002).Of the 14 patients with dislocation,8 underwent revision surgery for recurrent instability(posterior group),and one of them had 2 additional procedures due to a deep infection.The rate of other complications(e.g.,perioperative and early postoperative periprosthetic fractures and infection-related complications)did not differ significantly between the groups.CONCLUSION These findings suggest that the DAA to bipolar hemiarthroplasty for patients with femoral neck fractures is assoc
