Orthopaedic care provided by the 14th combat support hospital in support of humanitarian and disaster relief after hurricane maria in Puerto Rico

On September 20,2017 Hurricane maria,a category 4 hurricane,made landfall on the eastern coast of Puerto *** was preceded by Hurricane Irma,a category 5 hurricane,which passed just off the coast 13 d *** destruction from both Hurricane Irma and maria precipitated a coordinated federal response which included the Federal Emergency management Agency(FEmA)and the United States *** United States Army dispatched the 14^th Combat Support Hospital(CSH)to Humacao,a city on the eastern side of the island where maria made *** mission of the 14^th CSH was to provide medical humanitarian aid and conduct disaster relief operations in support of the government of Puerto Rico and *** the 14^th CSH deployment to Puerto Rico,1157 patients were evaluated and ***-seven operative cases were performed to include 23 orthopaedic *** mean age of the orthopaedic patients treated was 45.7 years(range 13-76 years).The most common operation was irrigation and debridement of open contaminated and/or infected *** presented a mean 10.8 d from their initial injury(range 1-40 d).Fractures and infections were the most common diagnoses with the greatest delay in treatment from the initial date of *** deployment of the 14^th CSH to Puerto Rico was unique in its use of air transport,language and local customs encountered,as well as deployment to a location outside the continental United *** factors coupled with the need for rapid deployment of the 14^th CSH provided valuable experience which will undoubtedly enable future success in similar endeavors.

The Caenorhabditis elegans pharynx is a neuromuscular tube of which the func-tion is to pump and crush bacteria,and inject them into the *** 80-cellpharynx develops via the morphogenesis and differentiation of the ceils that com-pose its semi-spherical primordiurn,and requires the activity of several evolution-arily conserved genes,such as pha-4 (the homolog to the Drosophilaforkheadand vertebrate FoxA),ceh-22 (the homolog to the Drosophila tinman and verte-brate Nkx2.5),and pha-2 (the homolog to the vertebrate Hex).There are 20 neu-rons in the pharynx,each with a reproducible unique *** analysis of axon guidance in the pharynx indicates that some axon trajec-tories are in part established without growth cones,whereas other parts necessi-tate growth cone function and *** we provide an overview of thedevelopmental genetics of the Caenorhabditis elegans pharynx,with an empha-sis on its nervous system.

How We Will Discover Sentience in AI

This paper explores the question of how we can know if Artificial Intelligence(AI)systems have become or are becoming *** an overview of some arguments regarding AI sentience,it proceeds to an outline of the notion of negation in the philosophy of Josiah Royce,which is then applied to the arguments already ***’s notion of the primitive dyadic and symmetric negation relation is shown to bypass such *** negation relation and its expansion into higher types of order are then considered with regard to how,in small variations of active negation,they would disclose sentience in AI ***,I argue that the much-hyped arguments and apocalyptic speculations regarding Artificial General Intelligence(AGI)takeover and similar scenarios,abetted by the notion of unlimited data,are based on a fundamental misunderstanding of how entities engage their ***,limitation,proceeding from the symmetric negation relation,expands outward into higher types of order in polyadic relations,wherein the entity self-limits and creatively moves toward uniqueness.

Goblet cell carcinoid is an uncommon primary tumor of the vermiform appendix, characterized by dual endocrine and glandular differentiation. Whether goblet cell carcinoid represents a morphological variant of appendiceal classical carcinoid or a mucin-producing adenocarcinoma is a matter of conjecture. Rare cases of goblet cell carcinoid with other concomitant appendiceal epithelial neoplasms have been documented. In this report, we describe a rare case of combined appendiceal goblet cell carcinoid and mucinous cystadenoma, and discuss the possible histopathogenesis of this combination.

Interferometric orbit determination for geostationary satellites

Future Geo SAR missions are expected to provide higher resolution radar images featuring shorter revisit times by locating a radar payload on-board of a geostationary satellite. One of the main challenges in Geo SAR processing is accurately determining the satellite orbit to obtain a precise phase history, in order to properly focus the retrieved data. To tackle this challenge, a multiple baseline ground-based interferometer is proposed as a compact and reliable method to achieve an unprecedented accuracy. As a proof of concept, this paper presents the results obtained from a single baseline prototype, whose results can be extrapolated to a larger system, able to be used in future missions.

A micromechanical model for efective conductivity in granular electrode structures

Optimization of composition and microstructure is important to enhance performance of solid oxide fuel cells （SOFC） and lithium-ion batteries （LIB）. For this, the porous electrode structures of both SOFC and LIB are modeled as a binary mixture of electronic and ionic conducting particles to estimate effective transport properties. Particle packings of 10000 spherical, binary sized and randomly positioned particles are created numerically and densified considering the different manufacturing processes in SOFC and LIB： the sintering of SOFC electrodes is approximated geometrically, whereas the calendering process and volume change due to intercalation in LIB are modeled physically by a discrete el- ement approach. A combination of a tracking algorithm and a resistor network approach is developed to predict the con- nectivity and effective conductivity for the various densified structures. For SOFC, a systematic study of the influence of morphology on connectivity and conductivity is performed on a large number of assemblies with different compositions and particle size ratios between 1 and 10. In comparison to percolation theory, an enlarged percolation area is found, es- pecially for large size ratios. It is shown that in contrast to former studies the percolation threshold correlates to varying coordination numbers. The effective conductivity shows not only an increase with volume fraction as expected but also with size ratio. For LIB, a general increase of conductivity during the intercalation process was observed in correlation with increasing contact forces. The positive influence of cal- endering on the percolation threshold and the effective conductivity of carbon black is shown. The anisotropy caused by the calendering process does not influence the carbon black phase.
