A solid phase extraction procedure(SPE)is described for the quantitative analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)in atmospheric particulate matter(PM),as ubiquitous environmental pollutants routinely measured in air qualitymonitoring.A SPE cartridge was used based on a molecular imprinted polymer(MIP-SPE)properly tailored for selective retention of PAHs with 4 and more benzene fused *** performance of the clean-up procedure was evaluated with the specific concern of selective purification towards saturated hydrocarbons,which are the PM components mostly interfering GC analysis of target *** optimized operative conditions,the MIP-SPE provided analyte recovery close to 95%for heavier PAHs,from benzo(α)pyrene to benzo(ghi)perylene,and close to 90%for four benzene rings PAHs,with good reproducibility(RSDs:2.5%-5.9%).Otherwise,C_(17)-C_(32) n-alkanes were nearly completely *** proposed method was critically compared with Solid Phase Micro Extraction(SPME)using a polyacrylate *** methods were successfully applied to the analysis of ambient PM2.5 samples collected at an urban polluted *** the two procedures,the MIP-SPE provided the highest recovery(R%≥93%)for PAHs with 5 and more benzene rings,but lower for lighter *** contrast,SPME showed a mean acceptable R%value(∼80%)for all the investigated PAHs,except for the heaviest PAHs in the most polluted samples(R%:110%-138%),suggesting an incomplete purification from the interfering n-hydrocarbons.

Ski resort abandonment is more frequent due to global warming,which progressively reduces snowpack and ***,projects aiming for new resorts in the Apennines have *** economic investments are risky,especially without long-term data on snow cover *** aim,thus,is to provide the first census of abandoned ski resorts in the Apennines and compare them with the resorts currently open to understand the causes that led to their ***,we explore factors behind resort failure by analyzing the relationships between climatic,geomorphological,and economic ***,we found 101 ski resorts in the Apennines,of which 28 were open,41 closed and abandoned and 32 partially closed(i.e.,closed in more than at least 7 years in the last 10 years).The closed and partially closed resorts represent 358 km of ski slopes(44%of total available).The number of structures per resort(*** lifts,chair lifts)is higher for open compared to partially closed and closed ***,the maximum elevation reached by the resorts is higher for those open(1793 m a.s.l.)than for those partially closed(1687 m a.s.l.)and especially those closed(1577 m a.s.l.).Finally,the mean size of the resorts in terms of skiable track length is larger for open(15.7 km)than partially closed(7.1 km)and closed resorts(3.2 km).The average duration of operation for abandoned resorts is 29.5 years,varying from a maximum of 56 years to a minimum of 0 years for two sites that were never opened after *** year of abandonment is positively associated with the maximum elevation,size,and duration of ***,the duration of operation is negatively correlated with the construction *** multivariate analysis confirms and strengthens the hypothesis for the causes that lead to abandonment are *** of the closed resorts are located at low altitude and have small ski areas although some higher altitude sites have also been abando

Ultrafast laser excitations provide an efficient and low-power consumption alternative since different magnetic properties and topological spin states can be triggered and manipulated at the femtosecond(fs)***,it is largely unknown whether laser excitations already used in data information platforms can manipulate the magnetic properties of recently discovered two-dimensional(2D)van der Waals(vdW)*** we show that ultrashort laser pulses(30−85 fs)can not only manipulate magnetic domains of 2D-XY CrCl_(3)ferromagnets,but also induce the formation and control of topological nontrivial meron and antimeron spin *** observed that these spin quasiparticles are created within~100 ps after the excitation displaying rich dynamics through motion,collision and annihilation with emission of spin waves throughout the *** findings highlight substantial opportunities of using photonic driving forces for the exploration of spin textures on 2D magnetic materials towards magneto-optical topological applications.

Neurotropic herpesviruses have been associated with the onset and progression of Alzheimer’s disease,a common form of dementia that afflicts a large percentage of elderly ***,among the neurotropic herpesviruses,herpes simplex virus-1,human herpesvirus-6A,and human herpesvirus-6B have been reported to infect several cell types present in the central nervous system and to dysregulate autophagy,a process required for homeostasis of cells,especially *** autophagosome accumulation,indicating an unbalance between autophagosome formation and autophagosome degradation,has been observed in neurons of Alzheimer’s disease patients and may play a role in the intracellular and extracellular accumulation of amyloidβand in the altered protein tau ***,herpesvirus infection of central nervous system cells such as glia and microglia can increase the production of oxidant species through the alteration of mitochondrial dynamics and promote inflammation,another hallmark of Alzheimer’s *** evidence suggests that it is worth further investigating the role of neurotropic herpesviruses,particularly human herpesvirus-6A/B,in the etiopathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease.

Pomacea canaliculata is a successful invader and also a competitor and predator of other snails and may play a key role in structuring freshwater snail communities both in its native and invaded range. In the present study we evaluated the contact and distant effects of P. canaliculata in its native range on exotic (Melanoides tuberculata and Physa acuta) and native snails (Heleobia parchappii, Biomphalaria peregrina, and Chilina parchappii). Habitat use was affected in P. acuta, H. parchappii, and B. peregrina by contact effects of P. canaliculata, whereas survival was only affected in P. acuta through combined con tact and dista nt effects. Fee undity was reduced in P. acuta and B. peregrina by combined con tact and distant effects;evidence of egg mass predation was also observed in both species. Melanoides tuberculata was not affected at all by P. canaliculata. The snail species with higher withdrawal resp on ses to con tacts with P. canaliculata were those that suffered less mortality by corporal contact, whereas snails with high crawling away responses suffered from higher mortality. The effects of P. canaliculata seem to be highly negative to small non operculate sn ails that lay gelati nous egg masses, whereas large operculate ovoviviparous snails are not affected in their survival and reproducti on. This apple snail may exert biotic resista nee agai nst P. acuta but could favor the establishme nt of M. tuberculata and other function ally similar species in new habitats in South America.

Melatonin is a natural hormone and with the advancement of age its production declines and thereby may result in some neurological disorders. Exogenous administration of melatonin has been suggested as a neuroprotective agent. Due to its low oral bioavailability, the loading of melatonin in polymeric nanoparticles could be an important tool to effectively use exogenous melatonin. The quantification of the incorporated drug within polymeric nanoparticles is an important step in nanoparticles characterization. An analytical method using high performance liquid chromatography equipped with photodiode array detector （HPLC-PDA） was developed and validated for melatonin determination in poly （lactic acid） nanoparticles obtained by a single emulsion-solvent evaporation technique. The melatonin in vitro release profile also was determined by the HPLC method. Mobile phase consisted of acetonitrile： water （65：35, v/v） pumped at a flow rate of 0.9 mL/min, in the isocratic mode and PDA detector was set at 220 nm. The method was validated in terms of the selectivity, linearity, precision, accuracy, robustness, limits of detection and quantification. Analytical curve was linear over the concentration range of 10-100 ~tg/mL, and limits of detection and quantification were 25.9 ng/mL and 78.7 ng/mL, respectively. The mean recovery for melatonin was 100.47% （RSD = 1.25%, n = 9）. In the intra- and inter- assay, the coefficient of variation was less than 2%. Robustness was proved performing changes in mobile phase, column temperature and flow rate. The method was suitable for the determination of melatonin encapsulation efficiency in poly（lactic acid） nanopartieles and for the evaluation of melatonin in vitro release profile.

In recent years,coconut oil has emerged as a potential‘miracle’*** media vehicles and health specialists assure that this fat is capable of promoting health benefits,such as weight reduction,cholesterol lowering,prevention of cardiovascular diseases,and anti-inflammatory effect,among *** claims are used to market the product and boost its sales by coconut oil ***,governmental regulatory agencies in many countries are still sceptical about the benefits obtained by the consumption of coconut oil due to its high-saturated fatty acid *** light of such controversy,this review focused on analysing the published literature on the alleged health claims,in order to investigate if there is enough scientific evidence to support *** was verified that the metabolism of lauric acid,the major fatty acid in coconut oil,remains *** studies reported that the product was not efficient in weight ***,it has been reported that the consumption of coconut oil increased low-density lipoprotein cholesterol,consequently increasing the risk of cardiovascular *** general,the studies present conflicting results and there is a lack of long-term human-based clinical ***,as a saturated fat,coconut oil should be consumed with moderation and the health allegations should not be used to market the product,once they are not scientifically proven so far.
