AiM:To compare the safety and effectiveness of eyelid treatment with the iLux®-MGD Treatment System in one session versus five sessions of mechanical meibomian gland expression(MMGE)in patients with moderate to severe meibomian gland dysfunction(MGD).METHoDS:A prospective,randomized,open-label,and controlled clinical trial that compared one session of the iLux®MGD Treatment System versus five sessions of MMGE in both eyes of 130 patients aged≥18y with ocular Surface Disease index(oSDi)scores≥13,total meibomian gland scores(MGS)ofin the lower eyelid of each eye,and non-invasive tear break-up time(Ni-TBUT)o were randomized 1:1 to iLux®or ***:The mean age was 58±*** total MGS scores in both treatment groups were *** follow-up,there were significant differences in total MGS and per sector with Pis was performed using generalized estimating equations corresponding to the generalized linear model for repeated means to determine the treatment relationship with total MGS,NiBUT,and *** was a significant difference between iLux®and MMGE(Pollow-up from the first to the twelfth month in MGS,Ni-BUT,and oSDi *** adverse events were ***:iLux®treatment compared to MMGE significantly improves symptoms and signs in patients with moderate to severe MGD for one year without adverse events.

Safety of digoxin in nonagenarian patients with atrial fibrillation:lessons from the Spanish Multicenter Registry

BACKGRoUND The association between digoxin and mortality is an unclear *** older patients with atrial fibrillation(AF),where use of digoxin is frequent,the evidence of its safety is *** aim is to assess the safety of digoxin in nonagenarian patients with *** We evaluated data from 795 nonagenarian patients with non-valvular AF from the Spanish Multicenter *** analyzed the relationship between digoxin and all-cause mortality with the Cox proportional-hazards *** Follow-up was 27.7±18.3 *** age was 92.5±3.8 years,and 71%of nonagenarian patients were *** was not associated with increased risk of mortality[adjusted hazard ratio(aHR)=1.16,95%Ci:0.96−1.41,P=0.130].However,we found a significant increase in mortality in the subgroup with estimated glomerular filtration rate(eGFR)in per 1.73 m^(2)(aHR=2.01,95%Ci:1.13−3.57,P=0.018),but not in the other subgroups of eGFR(30−59 mL/min per 1.73 m^(2) and≥60 mL/min per 1.73 m^(2)).When exploring the risk of mortality according to sex,male subgroup was associated with an in-crease in mortality(aHR=1.48,95%Ci:1.02−2.14,P=0.041).This was not observed in females subgroup(aHR=1.03,95%Ci:0.81−1.29,P=0.829).Based on the presence or absence of heart failure,we did not find significant differences(aHR=1.20,95%Ci:0.87−1.65,P=0.268 ***=1.15,95%Ci:0.90−1.47,P=0.273,respectively).CoNCLUSioNS in our large registry of nonagenarian patients with AF,we did not find an association between digoxin and mortality in the total ***,in the subgroup analyses,we found an increase in mortality with the use of digoxin in men and in patients with an eGFRin per 1.73 m^(2).

influence of Water Quality on the Variation Patterns of the Communities of Benthic Macroinvertebrates in the Lakes of the Central Highlands of peru

The influence of water quality on the variation patters of benthic macroin-vertebrate communities in the lakes in the central highlands of peru was eva-luated. Samples of water and sediments were collected in 23 different sam-pling sites last 2017. The physiochemical variables of water quality deter-mined on site were: Do, TDS, EC, temperature and pH. The results obtained revealed that the physiochemical indicators are within the environmental quality standards for water, except CoD and BoD5. Regarding the benthic macroinvertebrates, four phyla were identified wherein the most common is the phylum Arthropoda having the abundance and richness of taxa. The PCA reduced the variables to a few significant components that caused variation in water quality between lakes. The cluster analysis in relation to the relative abundance of benthic macroinvertibrates grouped the 22 sampling sites into three groups with the similar characteristics. The PCoA analysis of the ben-thic macroinvertebrate communities showed a clear separation of sites. The SiMper analysis at the family-level showed the distribution of the most common species. Therefore, at a significance level of 0.01 it demonstrates that there are significant differences between the number of species and abun-dance of the areas that were evaluated.

The environmental impact on the planet leads to the search of new processes that are friendly with the environment and obtaining high quality products. in this sense, green chemistry is used in the generation of products through processes that do not affect the planet. in many of these processes and in general, the use of water has been depleted this resource of vital importance for the survival of living things. in Mexico, 77% of water is used in agriculture;14% in the public supply;5% in the thermoelectric plants and 4% in the industry. in research presented, hydroponics is essential in the process and is defined as a technique used to reduce excessive water consumption, by providing the necessary nutrients, in addition to preventing soil erosion by allowing the growth of plants without use of ground. The potassium polyacrylate is a super-absorbent polymer (Hydrogel) capable of absorbing water up to 500 times of its weight and has a life span of 10 years. When mixed with a substrate, the required nutrient solution potassium polyacrylate allows to lengthen the interval watering and thus reducing the consumption of water from plants. Morelos is the largest producer of ornamental plants in the country, due to its privileged climate and location. in the present work using the hydroponic methodology, we planted cuttings of Bethlehem New Guinea (impatiens New Guinea) in a substrate made by 60% of coconut fiber, 20% tepojal, 20% ground sheet mixed with polymer of potassium (20 g per litre), 400 ml of Steiner nutrient solution in concentrations of 40%, 60%, 80% and 100%, varying the interval of 3-, 6-, 8- and 10-day watering. The variables considered are: concentration of chlorophyll, the plant height, leaf area, number of stems and weight dry total. Analysis of the interaction between [Ru(phenanthroline)<sub>3</sub>]<sup>2+</sup>and bovine serum albumin

The interaction of compounds with potential use as pharmaceutical with a carrier protein as serum albumin is of great importance in their biodistribution. Albumin offers different sites for binding metallic compounds. Using a combination of spectropho-tometric and electrochemical techniques, the interaction between [Ru(phen)3]Cl2 (phen = phenantroline) and bovine serum albumin was evaluated. in particular, it was possible to calculate an apparent binding constant (Kb) of 4.4 × 103 (for concentrations expressed in M) for the main interaction site of the protein. A number of ca. 40 molecules of Ru-phen per molecule of BSA under saturation conditions, and a positive cooperative behavior towards association from the protein were found.

Simvastatin,atorvastatin,and pravastatin equally improve the hemodynamic status of diabetic rats

AiM: To investigate if the effect of statins improving cardiovascular(CV) status of diabetics is drug-specific or class-dependent, and the underlying mechanisms *** HoD S : We compared the results of daily administration over a four-week period of a low dose(10 mg/kg per day) of atorvastatin(AV), simvastatin(SV), and pravastatin(PV) on cardiac performance in diabetic rats. Echocardiographic variables were tested, as well as systolic blood pressure(SBP), acetylcholine(ACh)-induced relaxation, plasma cholesterol levels, and perivascular fibrosis. Malondialdehyde(MDA) and 4-hydroxyalkenal(4-HAE), and endothelial nitric oxide synthase(e NoS) and inducible nitric oxide synthase(i NoS) protein levels were also measured in cardiac and aortic homogenates. RESULTS: in untreated diabetic rats, cholesterol levels were higher than in control rats(CT; n = 8, P ow dose of statins used did not modify these levels. in diabetic rats, SBP was higher than in CT, and was significantly reduced by all three statins(n = 10, P ocardiographic parameters(EF, SV, and Coi) were all lower in untreated diabetic rats than in CT(n = 10, P improved by all three statins. The maximal relaxation(EMax) induced by ACh in aortic ring from diabetic rats was also improved. Moreover, this relaxation was abolished by 1 mmol/L NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester, suggesting the involvement of a No-dependent mechanism. CoNCLUSioN: AV, SV, and PV are equally effective in improving CV performance in diabetic rats. All tree statins decreased media thickness, perivascular fibrosis, and both MDA and 4-HAE in the aortas of diabetic rats, without affecting e NoS and i NoS protein levels. The observed hemodynamic benefits are cholesterolindependent. These benefits appear to be secondary to the improved endothelial function, and to the reduced vascular tone and remodeling that result from decreased oxidative stress.

Whole Chia Flour as Yield Enhancer, Potential Antioxidant and input of n-3 Fatty Acid in a Meat Product

in this paper, the effect of the addition of whole chia flour and water at cooked fish burgers on yield, water and fat retention, n-3 fatty acids content and oxidative stability were studied. The results showed that 94% of yield, 92% of water retention and 97% of fat retention were achieved with the addition of 5.92 g of whole chia flour and 15 g of water per 100 g of burger. The n-3 fatty content increased from 704.57 ± 21.66 mg to 1551.71 ± 47.71 mg/100g of cooked burger when the chia flour was added, enhancing nutritional quality indices of lipid. A good oxidative stability, with minimum formation of conjugated dienes, hydroperoxides and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances during 30 days frozen storage was obtained too, probably due to the presence of polyphenolic compounds with antiradical activity and reducing power in the fibrous fraction of the flour chia. The results from the present study highlight remarkable technological applications of whole chia flour as food ingredient in the design of healthier fish meat commodities.

Cigarette smoking, dietary habits and genetic polymorphisms in GSTT1, GSTM1 and CYP1A1 metabolic genes: A case-control study in oncohematological diseases

AiM To analyze the association between oncohematological diseases and GSTT1 /GSTM1 /CYP1A1 polymorphisms, dietary habits and smoking, in an argentine hospitalbased case-control *** This hospital-based case-control study involved 125 patients with oncohematological diseases and 310 control subjects. A questionnaire was used to obtain sociodemographic data and information about habits. Blood samples were collected, and DNA was extracted using salting out methods. Deletions in GSTT1 and GSTM1 (null genotypes) were addressed by PCR. CYP1A1 Mspi polymorphism was detected by PCR-RFLP. odds ratio(oR) and 95%Ci were calculated to estimate the association between each variable studied and oncohematological *** Women showed lower risk of disease compared to men(oR 0.52, 95%Ci: 0.34-0.82, P = 0.003). Higher levels of education(> 12 years) were significantly associated with an increased risk, compared to complete primary school or less(oR 3.68, 95%Ci: 1.82-7.40, P or age and sex). With respect to tobacco, none of the smoking categories showed association with oncohematological diseases. Regarding dietary habits, consumption of grilled/barbecued meat 3 or more times per month showed significant association with an increased risk of disease(oR 1.72, 95%Ci: 1.08-2.75, P = 0.02). Daily consumption of coffee also was associated with an increased risk(oR 1.77, 95%Ci: 1.03-3.03, P = 0.03). Results for GSTT1, GSTM1 and CYP1A1 polymorphisms showed no significant association with oncohematological diseases. When analyzing the interaction between polymorphisms and tobacco smoking or dietary habits, no statistically significant associations that modify disease risk were found. CoNCLUSioN We reported an increased risk of oncohematological diseases associated with meat and coffee intake. We did not find significant associations between genetic polymorphisms and blood cancer.

The role of clinical diagnosis criteria on the frequency of accommodative insufficiency

AiM: To estimate and compare the frequency of accommodative insufficiency(Ai) within the same clinical population sample depending on the type of clinical criteria used for diagnosis. Comparing the frequency within the same population would help to minimize bias due to sampling or methodological variability. METHoDS: Retrospective study of 205 medical records of symptomatic subjects free of any organic cause and symptoms per.isting despite optical compensation evaluated. Based on the most commonly clinical diagnostics criteria found in the literature, four diagnostics criteria were established for Ai(Ⅰ, Ⅱ, Ⅲ and Ⅳ) based on subjective accommodative tests: monocular accommodative amplitude two or more diopters below Hofstetter's minimum value [15-(0.25×age)](Ⅰ, Ⅱ, Ⅲ, Ⅳ); failing monocular accommodative facility with minus lens, establishing the cut-off in 0 cycles per minute(cpm)(Ⅰ) and in 6 cpm(Ⅱ, Ⅲ); failing binocular accommodative facility with minus lens, establishing the cut-off in 0 cpm(Ⅰ) and in 3 cpm(Ⅱ).RESULTS: The proportion of Ai(95%CⅠ) for criteria Ⅰ, Ⅱ, Ⅲ and Ⅳ were 1.95%(0.04%-3.86%), 2.93%(0.31%-4.57%), 6.34%(1.90%-7.85%) and 41.95%(35.14%-48.76%) respectively, with a statistically significant difference shown between these values(χ2=226.7, Pirwise multiple comparison revealed that the proportion of Ai detected for criterion Ⅳ was significantly greater than the proportion for the rest of the criteria(P-adjustedin all cases).CoNCLUSioN: The prevalence of cases of Ai within the same clinical population varies with the clinical diagnostic criteria selected. The variation is statistically significant when considering the monocular accommodative amplitude as the only clinical diagnostic sign.
