Suitability and assessment of the dams water for the purpose of agricultural irrigation

This study was carried out to evaluate the water quality of selected dam lakes as well as their suitability for agricultural *** dams were selected for water sampling and samples were collected monthly,including during the irrigation season for a period of one year from march to September *** samples were analyzed for temperature,pH,physicochemical parameters such as temperature,pH value,salinity(EC),anions(CO_(3),HCO_(3),CI,SO_(4),P,NO_(3)),cations(Na,k,Ca,Mg,B,NH_(4))and heavy *** irrigation suitability assessment was made using various indices such as SAR(sodium adsorption rate),TDS(total dissolved solids),Na%(sodium percentage),RSC(residual sodium bicarbonate),mar(magnesium adsorption rate),kR(kelly ratio),and PI(permeability index).The temperature values of the water samples varied between 5.8℃-25.1℃,pH and EC values changed between 7.51 and 8.46,282,and 1400μS/cm *** water samples were evaluated as C_(2)S_(1) and C_(3)S_(1) irrigation water *** heavy metal contents of the water samples were determined below the limit *** dams were found suitable for irrigation in terms of EC(salinity),SAR(sodium adsorption rate),TDS(total dissolved solids),Na%(sodium percentage),RSC(residual sodium bicarbonate),mar(magnesium adsorption rate),and kR(kelly ratio).Water samples were determined as the second class of PI(permeability index).Güllübağdam was not found suitable as irrigation water in terms of EC,Na%,RSC,and kR *** a result,it specifically points to the restrictions on the use of water from the Güllübağdam for irrigation purposes.

Fast and Effective Thermotherapy Treatment for <i>In Vitro</i>Virus Eradication in Apple and Pear Trees

Heat therapy followed by the isolation and in vitro culture of apical meristems is a suitable procedure for virus eradication. However, the period of heat treatment is usually long (28 - 50 days) and the yield of viable plants free of viruses after treatment is often low (<50%). Here, we describe an alternative method to obtain virus-free plants. We used traditional Galician cultivars, six apple trees and two pear trees, infected with Apple chlorotic leaf spot virus (ACLSV) and Apple mosaic virus (ApMV). We combined heat therapy of in vitro shoots using a temperature gradient from 25℃to 40℃increasing 1℃per day for a shorter period of time (18 days) with the posterior isolation and culture of apical meristems. All DNA samples analyzed, obtained from plants developed from meristems, were 100% free of ApMV and almost 90% free of ACLSV. With this in vitro procedure combined we obtained a good yield of tested plants free of viruses. Our method is fast and effective and it could be also useful to eradicate these and other viruses in other fruit trees.

<i>In Vitro</i>Propagation and Recovery of Eight Apple and Two Pear Cultivars Held in a Germplasm Bank

Eight apple (Malus x domestica) and two pear (Pyrus communis) traditional cultivars of commercial interest were selected from the germplasm bank CIAM (Centro de Investigaciones Agrarias de Mabegondo, NW of Spain) one of the most important collections of The Iberian Peninsula. In order to define the establishment protocol, apical buds 1.0 - 1.5 millimetre length of the selected cultivars were established in solid mineral medium Murashige and Skoog (MS) with modified vitamins (thiamine 10X) and supplemented with 1 mg·L-1 6-benzyladenine (BA), 0.2 mg·L-1 gibberellic acid (GA3) and 0.3 mg·L-1 of indole-3-butyric acid (IBA). The highest shoot initiation rates were achieved with apple cultivar “Principe Grande” (55%) and “barburiña” pear cultivar (50%);the lowest rate was obtained with apple cultivar “Camoesa” (11%). Initiation rates for shoots culture varied between 22% and 37% for the other cultivars. The cytokinins BA, zeatin, 2-isopentyladenine (2iP) and thidiazuron (TDZ) were tested at concentrations of 0, 0.25, 0.5 and 1 mg·L-1 in the absence or presence of IBA (0.1 mg·L-1) for the multiplication step. For all cultivars, the highest multiplication rates were obtained with medium supplemented with TDZ and also in media containing BA. The in vitro rooting success of shoots in medium with 0.1 mg·L-1 IBA without cytokinins, and the survival rate of plantlets acclimatized under greenhouse conditions depended on the genotype of the different cultivars. In vitro propagation of these ten traditional apple and pear cultivars in NW Spain has not previously been reported.

E-Cadherin Dysfunction and Cancer

E-cadherin molecules are cell-cell molecular connectors, but also act attaching cell surface to the cytoskeleton through catenin’s and additional partner proteins. Its main function is to regulate cellular adhesion and motility, and therefore acts as an invasion suppressor system. Its role is crucial in the induction and maintenance of cell polarity and differentiation, and in the organization and maintenance of tissue architecture. Downregulation or loss of its function is associated with an invasive and aggressive phenotype in many types of human cancers. In alterations of animal development, E-cadherin dysfunction influence in premature lethality or epidermal barrier and immunity defects. However, new hypothesis over its promoter role in tissue invasion is on focus. In addition to its tumor suppressor role, E-cadherin is a guiding molecule in collective cell migration increasing the metastasis risk during in vivo tumorigenesis. This E-cadherin function explains the retention of the functional E-cadherin expression, and that the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is not required for the metastasis occurrence. However, like a switch, in some tumoral environments E-cadherin post-translational modifications may cause cell cluster migration. Like in development, in certain in vivo tumoral contexts, E-cadherin apparently involves signaling rather than cell contact formation. In this report, we explore the possibility of a novel role of thyroid hormones (THs) in the signal via E-cadherin-catenins, this not only should be involved in development and homeostasis, but also in cancer susceptibility of gastrointestinal tract.

AIM:The pathogenesis of hypogonadism in liver cirrhosis is not well *** results from our laboratory showed that IGF-1 deficiency might play a pathogenetic role in hypogonadism of *** administration of IGF-1 for a short period of time reverted the testicular atrophy associated with advanced experimental cirrhosis. The aim of this study was to establish the historical progression of the described alterations in the testes, explore testicular morphology,histopathology,cellular proliferation,integrity of testicular barrier and hypophyso- gonadal axis in rats with no ascitic cirrhosis. METHODS:Male Wistar rats with histologically-proven cirrhosis induced with carbon tetrachloride(CCI_4)for 11 wk, were allocated into two groups(n=12,each)to receive recombinant IGF-1(2 μg/100 gd,sc)for two weeks or *** rats receiving vehicle were used as control group(n=12). RESULTS:Compared to controls,rats with compensated cirrhosis showed a normal testicular size and weight and very few histopathological testicular abnormalities. However,these animals showed a significant diminution of cellular proliferation and a reduction of testicular transferrin *** addition,pituitary-gonadal axis was altered,with significant higher levels of FSH(Pbarrier is altered from an early stage of cirrhosis,shown by a reduction of transferrin expression in Sertoli cells,a diminished cellular proliferation and an altered gonadal *** treatment with IGF-1 could be also useful in this initial stage of testicular disorder associated with compensated cirrhosis.

Alicyclobacillus sp. strain CC2, a thermo-acidophilic bacterium isolated from Deception Island(Antarctica) containing a thermostable superoxide dismutase enzyme

A gram-positive, rod-shaped, aerobic, thermo-acidophilic bacterium CC2 （optimal temperature 55℃ and pH 4.0）, belonging to the genus Alicyclobacillus was isolated from geothermal soil collected from ＂Cerro Caliente＂, Deception Island, Antarctica. Owing to the harsh environmental conditions found in this territory, microorganisms are exposed to conditions that trigger the generation of reactive oxygen species （ROS）. They must have an effective antioxidant defense system to deal with this oxidative stress. We focused on one of the most important enzymes： superoxide dismutase, which was partially purified and characterized. This study presents the first report of a thermo-acidophilic bacterium isolated from Deception lsland with a thermostable superoxide dismutase （SOD）.

Nuclear Activity in Circumnuclear Ring Galaxies

We have analyzed the frequency and properties of the nuclear activity in a sample of galaxies with circumnuclear rings and spirals (CNRs), compiled from published data. From the properties of this sample a typical circumnuclear ring can be characterized as having a median radius of 0.7 kpc (mean 0.8 kpc, rms 0.4 kpc), located at a spiral Sa/Sb galaxy (75% of the hosts), with a bar (44% weak, 37% strong bars). The sample includes 73 emission line rings, 12 dust rings and 9 stellar rings. The sample was compared with a carefully matched control sample of galaxies with very similar global properties but without detected circumnuclear rings. We discuss the relevance of the results in regard to the AGN feeding processes and present the following results: 1) bright companion galaxies seem not to be important for the appearance of CNRs, which appear to be more related to intrinsic properties of the host galaxies or to minor merger processes;2) the proportion of weak bars in galaxies with a CNR is higher than expected;3) the incidence of Seyfert (Sy) activity coeval with CNRs is significantly larger than the rate expected from the morphological distribution of the host galaxies;4) the rate of Sy 2 to Sy 1 type galaxies with CNRs is about three times larger than the expected ratio for galaxies without CNRs and is opposite to that predicted by the geometric paradigm of the classical unified model for AGNs, although it does support the hypothesis that Sy 2 activity is linked to circumnuclear star formation. The possible selection effects of the sample are discussed, and we conclude that the detected trends are strong enough to justify high quality observations of as large as possible set of galaxies with circumnuclear rings and their matched control samples.

A correct antibody response requires the participation of both B and T lymphocytes and antigen presenting cells. In this review we address the role of follicular helper T lymphocytes(T FH) in this reaction. We shall focus on the regulation of their development and function in health and disease. T FH can be characterized on the basis of their phenotype and the pattern of secretion of cytokines. This fact is useful to study their participation in the generation of antibody deficiency in primary immunodeficiency diseases such as common variable immunodeficiency, X-linked hyper Ig M syndrome orX-linked lymphoproliferative disease. Increased numbers of T FH have been demonstrated in several autoimmune diseases and are thought to play a role in the development of autoantibodies. In chronic viral infections caused by the human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis B or C virus, increased circulating T FH have been observed, but their role in the protective immune response to these agents is under discussion. Likewise, an important role of T FH in the control of some experimental protozoan infections has been proposed, and it will be important to assess their relevance in order to design effective vaccination strategies.

Process for the Biological Removal of Fe (II) from Reconstituted Waters on a Support of Filter Material with Coated Jujube Seeds

Three beakers for removing Fe (II) in reconstituted water (doped with FeSO4) were built and tested. Given the set operating conditions ([O2] > 4 mg·L-1, Patm = 1.013 bar, T = 25°C ± 1°C and [Fe2+]0 = 0.5 to 2 mg·L-1), removal of iron was caused by biological and possibly physical and chemical oxidation because there is a quantity of free oxygen in the medium. The extent of each type of oxidation has not been evaluated as it specifically studies the biological degradation of iron in these beaker tests by setting the operating conditions (pH > 6.5, dissolved oxygen from 0 to 8 mg·L-1, Redox Potential from 100 to 400 mV). The experimental studies focused particularly on the measurements of maximum wavelength, conversion efficiencies from Fe (II) to Fe (III), the effect of the Fe (II) concentration, the influence of pH, the action of the temperature of the prepared solutions and the effect of O2 concentration under specified operating conditions. It noticed precipitated amounts of iron deposited at the bottom of the beakers. Thus, the low concentrations of Fe (II) detected in the influent after the biological oxidation operation could be attributed to microorganisms that consume iron as a substrate.
