Diabetes mellitus, revascularization and outcomes in elderly patients with myocardial infarction-related cardiogenic shock

Effects of metoclopramide on gastric motility measured by short-term bio-impedance

AIm:To analyze the accuracy of short-term bio-impedance as a means of measuring gastric ***: We evaluated differences in the short-term electrical bio-impedance signal from the gastric region in the following conditions: (1) fasting state, (2) after the administration of metoclopramide (a drug that induces an increase in gastric motility) and (3) after food ingestion in 23 healthy volunteers. We record-ed the real component of the electrical impedance signal from the gastric region for 1000 s. We performed a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) on this data and then compared the signal among the fasting, medicated, and postprandial conditions using the median of the area under the curve, the relative area under the curve and the main peak ***: The median of the area under the curve of the frequency range in the region between 2-8 cycles per minute (cpm) decreased from 4.7 cpm in the fasting condition to 4.0 cpm in the medicated state (t=3.32, P=0.004). This concurred with the decrease seen in the relative area under the FFT curve in the region from 4 to 8 cpm from 38.3% to 26.6% (t=2.81, P=0.012) and the increase in area in the region from 2 to 4 cpm from 22.4% to 27.7%, respectively (t=-2.5, P=0.022). Finally the main peak position also decreased in the region from 2 to 8 cpm. main peak activity in the fasting state was 4.72 cpm and declined to 3.45 cpm in the medicated state (t=2.47, P=0.025). There was a decrease from the fasting state to the postprandial state at 3.02 cpm (t=4.0, P=0.0013). cONcLUSION: Short-term electrical bio-impedance can assess gastric motility changes in individuals experiencing gastric stress by analyzing the area medians and relative areas under the FFT curve.

Objective: To assess the temporal and geographical distribution of confirmed cases of cutaneous, mucocutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis in the Argentine Republic from 2013 to 2017. methods: A retrospective study was carried out using data collected from the Integrated Surveillance Bulletin database of the National System of Health Surveillance. confirmed cases of cutaneous, mucocutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis up to the 52 nd epidemiological week of each year was included. Results: In the 5 years period, 1 295 confirmed leishmaniasis cases were reported in the Argentine Republic. One thousand twenty-eight(1 028) cases corresponded to cutaneous leishmaniasis(87.10%), being the most common type of leishmaniasis. mucocutaneous leishmaniasis was in the second place in the country with 115 cases reported, mostly in the Northwest and Northeast regions. A total of 52 individuals with visceral leishmaniasis were identified and misiones Province was the most affected. conclusions: It is important to analyze the temporal and geographical distribution of leishmaniasis in order to provide an adequate management and surveillance.

Efficacy of medium-chain fatty acid salts distilled from coconut oil against two enteric pathogen challenges in weanling piglets

Background:The search for alternatives to antibiotics in pig production has increased the interest in natural resources with antimicrobial properties,such as medium-chain fatty acids(mcFA)as in-feed *** study evaluated the potential of a novel blend of mcFA salts(DIc)from distilled coconut oil with a lauric acid content to reduce enteropathogens and control intestinal diseases around *** experimental disease models were implemented in early-weaned piglets,consisting of two oral challenges:Salmonella Typhimurium(1.2×10~8 cFU)or enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli(ETEc)F4(1.5×10~9 cFU).The parameters assessed were:animal performance,clinical signs,pathogen excretion,intestinal fermentation,immune-inflammatory response,and intestinal ***:The Salmonella challenge promoted an acute course of diarrhea,with most of the parameters responding to the challenge,whereas the ETEc F4 challenge promoted a mild clinical course.A consistent antipathogenic effect of DIc was observed in both trials in the hindgut,with reductions in Salmonella *** counts in the cecum(P=0.03)on d 8 post-inoculation(PI)(Salmonella trial),and of enterobacteria and total coliform counts in the ileum and colon(Pc F4 trial).When analyzing the entire colonic microbiota(16 S rRNA gene sequencing),this additive tended(P=0.13)to reduce the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio and enriched Fibrobacteres after the Salmonella *** the ETEc F4 challenge,DIc prompted structural changes in the ecosystem with increases in Dialister,and a trend(P=0.14)to increase the Veillonellaceae *** parameters such as the intestinal fermentation products or serum pro-inflammatory mediators were not modified by DIc supplementation,nor were the histological *** the intraepithelial lymphocyte(IEL)counts were lowered by DIc in animals challenged with Salmonella(P=0.07).With ETEc F4,the IEL counts were higher with DIc on d 8 PI(P=0.08).conclusions:This study c

Antiparasitic defenses in hosts of South American cowbirds

The cowbirds (molothrus, Icteridae) are a monophyletic group that includes five extant brood-parasitic species. The Screaming (m. rufoaxillaris), Giant (m. oryzivorus) and Shiny (m. bonariensis) cowbirds range mostly in South America. Screaming and Shiny cowbirds are the ancestral and most recent species of the clade, respectively, therefore, differing in how long they have coevolved with their hosts. We present new experimental data on egg-rejection in a host of the Shiny cowbird, the House Wren (Troglodytes aedon), review different lines of antiparasitic defenses in hosts of Screaming, Giant and Shiny cowbirds and assess whether hosts of different parasites differ in the type and extent of defenses. Hosts of all three parasites ejected non-mimetic eggs. most hosts of Giant and Shiny cowbirds were grasp ejectors, whereas the main host of the Screaming cowbird (the Baywing, Agelaioides badius) ejected parasitic eggs using its feet. Hosts smaller than Shiny cowbirds neither ejected cowbird eggs nor deserted nests following parasitism. Some hosts also reacted more aggressively towards the parasite. The main host of Screaming cowbird discriminated against non-mimetic chicks. Our results show that most hosts, regardless of the presumed evolutionary time of interaction with the parasite, have evolved some type of antiparasitic defense.
