Endoscopic pancreatic necrosectomy in the United States-Mexico border:A cross sectional study

BACKGROUND A recent expert panel issued recommendations about the technical aspects of direct endoscopic necrosectomy(DEN) for pancreatic walled-off necrosis(WON).However, significant technical heterogeneity still exists among *** To report the outcomes of our DEN technique and how it differs from a recent expert consensus statement and previous *** Medical records of patients with WON who underwent DEN from September2016-May 2019 were queried for the following information: Age, gender,ethnicity, etiology of acute pancreatitis, WON location and size, DEN technical information, adverse events(AEs) and outcomes. Adverse events were graded according to the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Lexicon grading system. Technical success was defined as adequate lumen apposing metal stent(LAMS) deployment plus removal of ≥ 90% of necrosum. Clinical success was defined as complete resolution of WON cavity by imaging and resolution of symptoms at ≤ 3 months(mo) after last DEN. Data analysis was performed using mean and standard deviation for continuous variables,frequency and proportion for categorical variables, and median and range for interval *** A total of 21 patients underwent DEN. Most of them were Hispanic and their mean age was 51 ± 17 years. The majority of the collections were located in the body of the pancreas and the mean size was 13 cm ± 5 cm. The most common indication was persistent vomiting. Antibiotics were administered only in cases of infected necrosis. All LAMS were placed without radiological guidance,dilated the same day of deployment and removed after a mean of 27 ± 11 *** cross-sectional imaging immediately after drainage was not *** mean interval between DEN sessions was 7 ± 4 d and the mean number of DEN/patient was 3 ± 2. Selenium is an essential element for humans as it involves different metabolic mechanisms. More bioavailable and bioaccessible selenium species are produced by microorganisms bioconverting inorganic selenium into nanoparticles and seleno-amino acids, which are of technological and health interest. Therefore, the objective of this study was the biogenic production of seleno-amino acids and selenium nanoparticles by Saccharomyces boulardii. It was found that the minimum inhibitory concentration of selenite that allowed the viability of the yeast, the biotransformation of selenium, and the production of selenium nanoparticles was 74 ppm of sodium selenite in YPD broth. The yeast accumulated 3.4 mg/g of selenium after 9 h of fermentation in the YPD broth enriched with the calculated minimum inhibitory concentration of Na2SeO3. The presence of selenomethionine, selenocysteine, and selenium nanoparticles was verified through RP-HPLC and TEM analysis. The results demonstrated that the biogenic production of seleno-amino acids and seleno-nanoparticles by the probiotic yeast S. boulardii is possible. These compounds could have applications in the fields of food technology and medicine.

Constructed Wetland Systems as a Methodology for the Treatment of Wastewater in Bucaramanga Industrial Park

Effluent discharges from municipal, industrial, and agricultural activities constitute major sources of pollution on land and water bodies. During the 1990s, large-scale application of Constructed Wetlands (CWs) as a remediation option drew much attention globally from the public and green groups alike. The most common application of CWs is for flow management in river system and little is documented on using CWs for treating polluted river water. This article goes beyond constructed wetlands as a stand-alone methodology to propose an integrated remediation system incorporating constructed wetlands in Bucaramanga Industrial Park S.A., Santander (Colombia), which will form part of an innovation park. In addition to pollution abatement, the project is projected to provide other environmental benefits to the entire Oro River Sub-basin. Other benefits of the project include mitigation of environmental impacts, improvement in water quality, landscape amenity, as well as tourism and recreational benefits.

After some reduction procedure made on the nonlinear evolution equation for nerve pulses, based on thermodynamic principles, new classic and non-classic traveling solutions have been obtained. We have studied this model for particular values in the parameter space, and obtained both the bell and compacton like solutions. These nonlinear traveling waves could be responsible for transmitting efficiently the necessary information along the axons. The non-classic structures named as compactons, due to their robust configuration, could be considered in some sense a more realistic type of nonlinear chargers of information. The last solutions do not have tails and as adiabatic waves could propagate along the nerve with constant velocity that could be equal, smaller or higher than the sound velocity.

Sanger Sequencing Implementation in Clinically Ill Patients for Bacterial and Fungal Pathogens Identification

The diagnosis of bacterial or fungal infections requires the identification of the pathogen etiology in the shortest time possible. Although some biomarkers are used as indicators of bacterial infections, their specificity and sensitivity are highly variable, and there is no direct relationship between the level increase of these biomarkers for mycosis. It is common to obtain negative microbiological cultures in patients infected by non-culturable, intracellular bacteria or mycosis, even though there is a high clinical suspicion of infection. This study identifies the pathogen present in critically infected patients through 16S and 18S/eEF1 genes detection by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) coupled with Sanger sequencing. Thirty clinical samples were evaluated by PCR, of which 40% were positive for fungi, 23.33% for bacteria, 26.7% for fungi and bacteria, and 10% for no pathogen. The PCRs outcomes period for bacteria or fungi was one day compared to seven and up to 14 days (on average) of microbiological culture for bacteria and fungi. Then, we assessed the relationship with the most used biomarkers (procalcitonin, C-reactive protein, globular sedimentation velocity, and the neutrophil-lymphocyte index). This combination of molecular techniques has been shown as helpful in identifying intracellular bacteria and fungi that are difficult to culture by conventional methods. Screening with genomic markers 16S and 18S/eEF1 by PCR allowed us to optimize the time to obtain the result of the infection caused by bacteria or fungi. Also, identifying the specific etiological microorganism by Sanger sequencing was very helpful in avoiding the progression of the disease and setting targeted treatment with better clinical outcomes.

Melatonin is a pleiotropic molecule that,after a short-term sleep deprivation,promotes the proliferation of neural stem cells in the adult ***,this effect has not been observed in long-term sleep *** precise mechanism exerted by melatonin on the modulation of neural stem cells is not entirely elucidated,but evidence indicates that epigenetic regulators may be involved in this *** this study,we investigated the effect of melatonin treatment during a 96-hour sleep deprivation and analyzed the expression of epigenetic modulators predicted by computational text mining and keyword *** results showed that the administration of melatonin under sleep-deprived conditions increased the MECP2 expression and reduced the SIRT1 expression in the dentate *** observed that let-7 b,mir-132,and mir-124 were highly expressed in the dentate gyrus after melatonin administration,but they were not modified by sleep *** addition,we found more Sox2^+/5-bromo-2’-deoxyuridine(BrdU)^+cells in the subgranular zone of the sleep-deprived group treated with melatonin than in the untreated *** findings may support the notion that melatonin modifies the expression of epigenetic mediators that,in turn,regulate the proliferation of neural progenitor cells in the adult dentate gyrus under long-term sleep-deprived *** procedures performed in this study were approved by the Animal Ethics Committee of the University of Guadalajara,Mexico(approval ***-16610)on January 2,2016.

Effectiveness of Selected Microbial Strains on the Growth of Sweet Sorghum

Microbial inoculants are of great importance in agro-ecology and plants. However, the symbiotic effectiveness of strains may vary between species or within the same species. Aim of the study was to select experimental microbial strains of national origin, to know its impact on growth of sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) in greenhouse and sterile soil. Five strains of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and eight rhizobacteria (two of them mutagenized) were compared with non-inoculated plants as control. Variables measured were index of chlorophyll SPAD, plant height, stem diameter (from the middle section), fresh biomass from stem, leaf, panicle, radical, and stem sugars content (°Brix) of every two internodes. The results showed that in the majority of cases, microbial strains exceeded the values of variables compared with control plants. The highest values of chlorophyll (41.8 SPAD), stem diameter (13.5 mm) and total fresh biomass (144.3 g), were recorded with rhizobacterias BS410 (Herbaspirillum sp.), B2709 (Pseudomonas sp.) and B4M4 (Azospirillum sp.), respectively.
