The use of flours or phenolic extracts obtained from non-traditional sources or agri-food industry by-products has been a strategy used to formulate new bakery products with characteristics of a functional ***,phenolic compounds present great structural diversity,as well as the ability to interact in a complex way with the macromolecules that constitute the bread ***,the addition of these flours,extracts or pure compounds produces various effects on the microstructure of bread,and several of its sensory *** is mainly due to interactions between phenolic compounds and gluten *** objective of this review is to analyze some of the most recent published works on the addition of phenolic compounds in wheat bread to identify the type of positive and negative effects that have been observed and how they can be related to the physicochemical interactions between phenolic compounds and the macromolecules that constitute the food matrix,mainly *** effect of monomeric and polymeric phenolic compounds on the strength of these interactions and on the properties of dough and bread are discussed.

Estimation of the carbon pool in soil and above-ground biomass within mangrove forests in Southeast Mexico using allometric equations

We report the results of carbon stored in soil and aboveground biomass from the most important area of mangroves in Mexico, with dominant vegetation of Red mangrove （Rhizophora mangle L.）, Black mangrove （Avicennia germinans L.）, white mangrove （Laguncularia racemosa Gaertn.） and button mangrove （conocarpus erectus L.）. We sampled soils with high fertility during the dry season in 2009 and 2010 at three sites on Atasta Peninsula, campeche. We used allometric equations to estimate above ground biomass （AGB） of trees. AGB was higher in c. erectus （253.18±32.17 t？ha-1）, lower in A. germinans （161.93±12.63 t？ha-1）, and intermediate in R. mangle （181.70±16.58 t？ha-1） and L. racemosa （206.07±19.12 t？ha-1）. Of the three studied sites, the highest absolute value for AGB was 279.72 t？ha-1 in button mangrove forest at any single site. carbon stored in soil at the three sites ranged from 36.80±10.27 to 235.77±66.11 t？ha-1. The Tukey test （p 〈0.05） made for AGB was higher for black mangrove showed significant differences in soil carbon content between black mangrove and button mangrove. c. erectus had higher AGB compared with the other species. A. germinans trees had lower AGB because they grew in hypersaline environments, which reduced their development. c. erectus grew on higher ground where soils were richer in nutrients. AGB tended to be low in areas near the sea and increased with distance from the coast. A. germinans usually grew on recently deposited sediments. We assumed that all sites have the same potential to store carbon in soil, and then we found that there were no significant differences in carbon content between the three samples sites： all sites had potential to store carbon for long periods. carbon storage at the three sampling sites in the state of campeche, Mexico, was higher than that reported for other locations.

All-fiber ellipsometer for nanoscale dielectric coatings

Multiple mode resonance shifts in tilted fiber Bragg gratings(TFBGs)are used to simultaneously measure the thickness and the refractive index of TiO_(2) thin films formed by Atomic Layer Deposition(ALD)on optical *** is achieved by comparing the experimental wavelength shifts of 8 TFBG resonances during the deposition process with simulated shifts from a range of thicknesses(T)and values of the real part of the refractive index(n).The minimization of an error function computed for each(n,T)pair then provides a solution for the thickness and refractive index of the deposited film and,a posteriori,to verify the deposition rate throughout the process from the time evolution of the wavelength shift *** of the results were carried out with a conventional ellipsometer on flat witness samples deposited simultaneously with the fiber and with scanning electron measurements on cut pieces of the fiber *** final values obtained by the TFBG(n=2.25,final thickness of 185 nm)were both within 4%of the validation *** approach provides a method to measure the formation of nanoscale dielectric coatings on fibers in situ for applications that require precise thicknesses and refractive indices,such as the optical fiber sensor ***,the TFBG can also be used as a process monitor for deposition on other substrates for deposition methods that produce uniform coatings on dissimilar shaped substrates,such as ALD.

Steatosis and insulin resistance in hepatitis c: A way out for the virus?

The hepatitis c virus (HcV) induces lipid accumulation in vitro and in vivo. The pathogenesis of steatosis is due to both viral and host factors. Viral steatosis is mostly reported in patients with genotype 3a, whereas meta-bolic steatosis is often associated with genotype 1 and metabolic syndrome. Several molecular mechanisms responsible for steatosis have been associated with the HcV core protein, which is able to induce gene expres-sion and activity of sterol regulatory element binding protein 1 (SREBP1) and peroxisome proliferator-activat-ed receptor γ (PPARγ), increasing the transcription of genes involved in hepatic fatty acid synthesis. Steatosis has been also implicated in viral replication. In infected cells, HcV core protein is targeted to lipid droplets which serve as intracellular storage organelles. These studies have shown that lipid droplets are essential for virus assembly. Thus, HcV promotes steatosis as an eff icient mechanism for stable viral replication. chronic HcV in-fection can also induce insulin resistance. In patients with HcV, insulin resistance is more strongly associated with viral load than visceral obesity. HcV seems to lead to insulin resistance through interference of intracellular insulin signalling by HcV proteins, mainly, the serine phosphorylation of insulin receptor-1 (IRS-1) and im-pairment of the downstream Akt signalling pathway. The HcV core protein interferes with in vitro insulin signal-ling by genotype-specif ic mechanisms, where the role of suppressor of cytokine signal 7 (SOcS-7) in genotype 3aand mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) in geno-type 1 in IRS-1 downregulation play key roles. Steatosis and insulin resistance have been associated with f ibrosis progression and a reduced rate of sustained response to peginterferon plus ribavirin.

Selection of Maize Genotypes with Tolerance to Osmotic Stress Associated with Salinity

Thirteen different inbred lines in relation to the type of grain and life cycles were characterized by testing for osmotic stress associated with salinity. The identification of tolerant genotypes would be an effective strategy to overcome the saline stress. Osmotic stress reduces immediately the expansion of the roots and young leaves which determine a reduction in the size of the plant. A completely randomized design was adopted to test seedlings under controlled conditions of light and temperature. Two treatments were used: 0 mM Nacl (as control) and 100 mM Nacl. After 15 days of complete salinization, the seedlings were harvested and several morphological traits were measured. The morphological traits of growth were leaf growth (Ar1, Ar2, Ar3 and Ar4), dry masses of shoot and root (SDM and RDM, respectively). Also, traits associated with water economy were registered: leaf water loss (LWL) and relative water content (RWc). The morphological traits were expressed in relative terms, while the traits associated with the economy of water were expressed in absolute terms. Uni and multivariate techniques were applied to identify genotypes with divergent behaviors to osmotic stress tolerance. Also, a Tolerance Index was employed to identify superior genotypes. Four clusters were obtained after applying a cluster Analysis and Principal component Analysis (PcA). The genotypes were compared to each other with a test of DMS. The results obtained with different statistical techniques converged. Some variables presented a differential weight classification of genotypes. The morphological traits like RDM, SDM, Ar3, Ar4 and Ar5 were the most discriminating. Tolerance Index allowed to classify genotypes, thus Sc2 and AD3 lines were that reached highest value of the index and therefore would be tolerant lines, while AF3 and LP3 had a low index and were seen as sensible.

Experimental Investigation of Demand controlled Ventilation Systems： A Suitable Alternative for controlling Ventilation in Dwellings

Indoor cO2 concentration depends on the number of persons, their metabolic rates, other sources of indoor pollution, ventilation rate and ventilation efficiency. These factors are not considered by the Spanish technical building code since ventilation is set only by a fixed air change rate. This paper aims to explore the possibilities of DcVS （demand controlled ventilation systems） to ensure adequate and sustainable ventilation. It is based on a research project carried out by the University of the Basque country （EHU-UPV） and Euskadi Public Housing and Soil Join-Stock company （VISESA）： the living rooms of 90 dwellings were provided with DcVS, where cO2 sensors were used to dynamically control the ventilation rate. Tests were carried out using tracer gas techniques, with results showing the air age to be adequate at every point of the occupied zones and free of stagnant areas, therefore proving the system＇s effectiveness and rapid response, and its energy savings.

Electrochemical reduction of cr(Ⅵ)in the presence of sodium alginate and its application in water purification

chromium(cr)is used in many manufacturing processes,and its release into natural waters is a major environmental problem *** concentrations of cr(Ⅵ)are toxic to human health and living organisms due to the carcinogenic and mutagenic nature of this *** work examined the conversion of cr(Ⅵ)to cr(Ⅲ)via electrochemical reduction using gold electrode in an acidic sodium alginate(SA)solution and subsequent removal of the produced cr(Ⅲ)-SA by the polymer-enhanced ultrafiltration(PEUF)technique.A solution of SA in nitric acid was used both as an electrolytic medium during the voltammetric measurements and bulk electrolysis and as an extracting agent during the PEUF *** electroanalysis of cr(Ⅵ)was performed by linear sweep voltammetry in the presence of acidic SA solution to study its voltammetric behavior as a function of the cr(Ⅵ)concentration,pH,presence of cr(Ⅲ),SA concentration and scan *** addition,the quantitative reduction of cr(Ⅵ)to cr(Ⅲ)was studied through the bulk electrolysis *** results showed efficient reduction with well-defined peaks at approximately 0.3 V ***/Agcl,using a gold working *** the pH increased,the reduction signal strongly decreased until its *** optimum SA concentration was 10 mmol/L,and it was observed that the presence of cr(Ⅲ)did not interfere in the cr(Ⅵ)*** the quantitative reduction by bulk electrolysis in the presence of acidic SA solution,it was possible to reduce all cr(Ⅵ)to cr(Ⅲ)followed by its removal via PEUF.

Evaluation of the Antioxidant Activity of Ethanolic Extracts of Some Varieties of Onions

The content of polyphenolic substances in commercial onions has been determined. The antioxidant activity of their ethanolic extracts, as well as their effects on the oxidation of edible corn oil during accelerated ageing was studied. Maceration of taxonomically identified commercial vegetable samples, previously peeled and thinly sliced, was carried out at ambient temperature, out of direct light, with occasional agitation and ultrasound, employing 95% ethyl alcohol as the extraction solvent, allowing them to stand for 7 days. The total polyphenolic contents were determined on the filtrated extracts using the Folin-ciocalteau method. The antioxidant activity was evaluated on emulsions of ethanolic extracts of onion prepared in edible commercial corn oil, using sorbitan monooleate as emulsifying agent. The peroxide values were analyzed using the iodometric method;oxidation induction times were obtained from the peroxide evolution graphs, using the tan- gent method. Oil samples emulsified with ethanolic onion extracts showed an extension of the induction period. A 7-day ageing study at 45?c was additionally performed to determine the conjugated dienes on pure commercial corn oil and its emulsions by visible spectrophotometry. The spectral analysis showed an increase of the measured absorbancies in oil samples without additives and no change for the oils emulsified with onion extract. An increasing of diene values was observed for corn oil without additives during ageing;no changes in the value were observed in oils emulsified with onion extracts.

A comparison of Semi-Lagrangian and Lagrange-Galerkin hp-FEM Methods in convection-Diffusion Problems

We perform a comparison in terms of accuracy and cPU time between second order BDF semi-Lagrangian and Lagrange-Galerkin schemes in combination with high order finite element *** numerical results show that for polynomials of degree 2 semi-Lagrangian schemes are faster than Lagrange-Galerkin schemes for the same number of degrees of freedom,however,for the same level of accuracy both methods are about the same in terms of cPU *** polynomials of degree larger than 2,Lagrange-Galerkin schemes behave better than semi-Lagrangian schemes in terms of both accuracy and cPU time;specially,for polynomials of degree 8 or ***,we have performed tests on the parallelization of these schemes and the speedup obtained is quasi-optimal even with more than 100 processors.
