Long-term study of at-sea distribution of seabirds and marine mammals in the Scotia Sea, Antarctica

The Scotia Sea is one of the most biologically rich regions of Antarctica, and it hosts a large community of upper trophic-level predators. Long-term at-sea monitoring provides valuable information on the Antarctic marine ecosystem and relationships among top predators. This paper presents the results of at-sea monitoring of seabirds and cetaceans over five consecutive summer seasons （2010--2014） in the Scotia Sea, Antarctica. A total of 11 656 flying birds belonging to 24 species were recorded in 884 ten-minute counts. Six Procellariiformes species were abundant： Black-browed Albatross, Cape Petrel, Southern Fulmar, Antarctic Prion, Wilson＇s Storm-petrel, and Black-bellied Storm-petrel. Only three of these species accounted for 82% of the total abundance： Antarctic Prion （40%）, Southern Fulmar （22%）, and Cape Petrel （20%）. A total of 678 baleen whales belonging to five species were recorded along a sampling effort of 2 351 nautical miles： Humpback, Sei, Southern Right, Fin, and Minke whales, which had different abundances during the study. The Fin Whale had the highest mean encounter rate for the 5 years （0.29 whales per nautical mile）, followed by the Humpback Whale （0.09 whales per nautical mile）. Annual dissimilarity in abundance of both seabirds and cetaceans occurred in conjunction with changes in the sea surface temperature and ice cover, showing the dependence of top predators on environmental changes. The largest aggregations of all top predators （seabirds and cetaceans） were recorded in two regions, west and south of the South Orkney Islands, suggesting important prey availability （especially krill） in those areas.

Myxoid Meningioma:An Example of a Rare Brain Tumour of Difficult Diagnosis

We present a case of a Myxoid Meningioma noticed in a 43-year-old woman. The patient, who had no noteworthy medical antecedents, showed repeated focal epileptic crisis. Imaging studies (MR and CT) showed a solitary and well delimited tumour located in the frontral lobe. Once extirpated, the histological study revealed a neoplasm of myxoid and benign appearance, with elongated and uniform cells, with no atypias and a very low mitotic index. Immunohistochemisty studies (positivity for Vimentin and Epithelial Membrane Antigen, and negativity for the other markers) as well as physical and radiological examination of the patient (absence of tumours in any other location), suggested the diagnosis of a Myxoid Meningioma, which was confirmed by electron microscopy (by the presence of desmosomes). We also revise the characteristics of Myxoid Meningiomas, an absolutely exceptional primary tumour of the central nervous system.

Influence on Time to Cryopreservation in Umbilical Cord Blood Units

It is accepted that the Umbilical Cord Blood (UCB) units can be cryopreserved to 48 h after their harvest and the delay in this procedure influences the final quality. The aim of this study was to determine the influence on time to cryopreservation in Umbilical Cord Blood Units. A selection of the 2134 samples arrived to the UCB Bank from 36 Andalusian linked hospitals was analyzed for a period of six months. The date and hour of collection, hospital of origin, time in the hospital, time of transport, time of arrival to the bank to cryopreservation, viability and CD34+ cells were determined. Our results showed that the median time from harvest to cryopreservation was 27.9 h. However, a great variability was found (range: 5.3 to 47.6 h), which was dependent on transport variables: time from collection to leave the hospital (median 12.6 h, range: 0.1 - 28.8), time of transport from hospital to UCB Bank (median 1.8 h, range: 0.1 - 20.6) and time kept in the bank before freezing. Viability of cells were reduced directly proportional in samples that took longer to be cryopreserved (93.9 vs 96.6%, p = 0.001), by contrast, CD34+ count did not differ significant at shorter or longer times of cryopreservation. In conclusion, the delay in transport time and in processing reduce the umbilical cord units quality, consequently, the time of transport and storage previous to cryopreservation must be reduced less than 36 h.

Contamination of Water for Domestic Use and Human Consumption by Heavy Metals Derived from Mining Activity in Parral, Chihuahua, Mexico

Research was done with the objective of evaluating the quality of water supplied to the potable water system in Hidalgo del Parral, which comes from two main supply sources： wells from ＂Valle del Verano＂, which provide water to the east side of the city, and the Water Treatment Plant, which receives water from different mines and supplies the west side of the city. When this plant is overcome on its capacity of treatment, a part of the water from the mines is fed directly to the northwest part of the city. The metals lead （Pb）, chromium （Cr）, cadmium （Cd）, zinc （Zn）, and arsenic （As） were analyzed by atomic absorption （AA） technique, based on the United States Environmental Protection Agency （EPA） Method 7000B （Revision 2, February 2007）. The digestion process was done according to the guidelines established in Method NMX-AA-051-SCFI-2001, Analysis of Water-Determination of Metals by Atomic Absorption, developed by the National Standardization Technical Committee for Environmental Protection （Mexico）. The samples were collected from the following points： 13 wells and 2 re-pumping stations of ＂Valle del Verano＂, the inlet and outlet of the Water Treatment Plant, and domestic faucets. The east side of the city, supplied by the wells of ＂Valle del Verano＂, is metal-pollution free. The water that comes from the mines contains high concentrations of As, Zn, Cd and Pb, with levels that can get to 0.12, 32.6, 0.26 and 3.5 mg/L, respectively. This water pollution generated by mining can be concluded from the high levels found in the domestic samples in which, for several points, the concentrations exceed the parameters set by the current guideline. According to the results, it is vital to set a plan of remediation for the water that comes from the mines, because there is a great risk for health in the consumotion of this water.

Prevalence of celiac disease in an urban area of Brazil with predominantly European ancestry

AIM： To determine the prevalence of celiac disease in a group of volunteer blood donors at a blood bank in the city of Curitiba, Brazil through detection of the serum marker immunoglobulin A （IgA） antitransglutaminase antibody. METHODS： Blood samples collected from 2086 healthy subjects at the Paraná State Center for Hematology and Hemotherapy in Curitiba were submitted to ELISA testing for the IgA antitransglutaminase antibody. Positive samples received IgA antiendomysium antibody test through indirect immunofluorescence using human umbilical cord as substrate. Subsequently, patients who were positive on both tests underwent small bowel （distal duodenum） biopsy. RESULTS： Six subjects, four males and two females, tested positive for the two serum markers. Five of the six were submitted to intestinal biopsy （one declined the procedure）. Biopsy results revealed changes in the distal duodenum mucosa （three classified as marsh mb lesions and two as marsh Ⅱ lesions）. Most donors diagnosed having celiac disease presented multiple symptoms （gastrointestinal tract complaints）. One donor reported having a family history of celiac disease （in a niece）. CONCLUSION： Among apparently healthy blood donors,the prevalence of biopsy-confirmed celiac disease was approximately 1：417, similar to that seen in European countries.

The present work describes software SOLEEC （copyright 03-2012-070510302900-01 Mexico）, a numerical tool for PTC （parabolic trough collector） designing. Software SOLEEC is divided into two main parts. The first one allows solar resource assessment for a specific place on the Earth. The computation and assessment can be done for a specific day on the year, for one specific month and the monthly averages along the year. The last one gives annual charts such as： solar constant, Earth declination, insolation hours, and sunrise and sunset hours. The second part has four different execution options for PTC designing, that is, using options one and two user can get five different designs based on receiver outer diameter evaluating solar radiation data along the full year or only one solar radiation value （monthly）, on the other hand options three and four were developed to compute the thermal evaluation for an operating collector for twelve solar radiation values （annually） or a specific month computation, respectively.

Optimization of Zeaxanthin Production by Immobilized <i>Flavobacterium</i>sp. Cells in Fluidized Bed Bioreactor

From time immemorial, human beings have used pigments made from vegetables, fruits, superior plants, animal tissues and cereals. One of the greatest sources of pigments is the bacterium that, with the use of the modern technology, has increased the production of metabolites of interest. The microbiological production of carotenoids has not been optimized to obtain pigment production quantities of pigments and carotenoids recovery that lower production costs. The aim of this work was to design a Zeaxanthin production process with Flavobacterium sp. immobilized cells in a fluidized bed bioreactor. An optimum culture medium for Zeaxanthin production in stirred flasks (2.46 g·L–1) was obtained. Furthermore, optimum process conditions for a maximum yield of Zeaxanthin production, by fluidized bed bioreactor, were established. A statistical analysis showed that the most significant factors were air flow, pH and NaCl concentration (4.5 g·L–1). In this study a maximum Zeaxanthin production of 3.8 g·L–1 was reached. The highest reported yield to date was 0.329 g·L–1.

Reduction of the closure time of postoperative enterocutaneous fistulas with fibrin sealant

AIM: To assess whether the use of fibrin sealantshortens the closure time of postoperative enterocutaneous fistulas (ECFs). METHODS: The prospective case-control study included 70 patients with postoperative ECFs with an output of 2 cm and without any local complication. They were divided into study (n = 23) and control groups (n = 47). Esophageal, gastric and colocutaneous fistulas were monitored under endoscopic visualization, which also allowed fibrin glue application directly through the external hole. Outcome variables included closure time, time to resume oral feeding and morbidity related to nutritional support. RESULTS: There were no differences in mean age, fistula output, and follow-up. Closure-time for all patients of the study group was 12.5 ± 14.2 d and 32.5 ± 17.9 d for the control group (P < 0.001), and morbidity related to nutritional support was 8.6% and 42.5%, respectively (P < 0.01). In patients with colonic fistulas, complete closure occurred 23.5 ± 19.5 d after the first application of fibrin glue, and spontaneous closure was observed after 36.2 ± 22.8 d in the control group (P = 0.36). Recurrences were observed in 2 patients because of residual disease. One patient of each group died during follow-up as a consequence of septic complications related to parenteral nutrition. CONCLUSION: Closure time was significantly reduced with the use of fibrin sealant, and oral feeding was resumed faster. We suggest the use of fibrin sealant for the management of stable enterocutaneous fistulas.
