Consumption of onion ha. been a.socia.ed with reduced incidence of chronic disea.es. Phenolic, orga.osulfur a.d ca.bohydra.e compounds present a.e la.gely responsible for these effects. This study exa.ined compositiona. va.ia.ion for hea.th-enha.cing compounds in a.genetica.ly diverse collection of onion cultiva.s. Tota. a.tioxida.t a.tivity a.d a.oma.profiles were cha.a.terized. Significa.t va.ia.ion in bulb concentra.ion for tota. a.d individua. phenolic compounds, thiosulfina.es, ca.bohydra.es, a.d tota. a.d soluble solids wa. found. The ra.ge of va.ia.ion wa. pa.ticula.ly la.ge (>50-fold difference between the cultiva.s with the highest a.d lowest content) for fructo-oligosa.cha.ides (FOS) a.d the polyphenols quercetin, epiga.loca.echin ga.la.e a.d epica.echin ga.la.e. a.ino a.id profiles va.ied significa.tly a. well with substa.tia. va.ia.ion (~10 fold) observed in both tota. a.d essentia. a.ino a.ids. Tota. a.tioxida.t a.tivity wa. positively correla.ed with polyphenols content, a.d quercetin in pa.ticula. (r = 0.83), suggesting a.ma.or contribution from phenolic compounds to onion a.tioxida.t properties. Significa.t positive correla.ion wa. a.so found between solids a.d thiosulfina.es content (r = 0.74) a.d between solids a.d FOS (r = 0.81), suggesting a.dilution/concentra.ion effect for orga.osulfur compounds a.d FOS in onion bulbs. The present study revea.ed broa. va.ia.ion for hea.th-enha.cing compounds content in onion germpla.m, which ca. be exploited in breeding progra.s a.ming a. increa.ing onion nutra.eutica. va.ue.

a.M To cha.a.terize punctua. muta.ions in 23S rRNa.gene of cla.ithromycin-resista.t Helicoba.ter pylori(H. pylori) a.d determine their a.socia.ion with thera.eutic *** PCR products of 23S rRNa.gene V doma.n of 74 H. pylori isola.es; 34 resista.t to cla.ithromycin(29 from a.low-risk ga.tric ca.cer(GC) popula.ion: Tuma.oColombia. a.d 5 from a.high-risk popula.ion: TuquerresColombia. a.d 40 from a.susceptible popula.ion(28 from Tuma.o a.d 12 from Túquerres) were sequenced using ca.illa.y electrophoresis. The concorda.ce between muta.ions of V doma.n 23S rRNa.gene of H. pylori a.d thera.eutic fa.lure wa. determined using the Ka.pa.coefficient a.d Mc Nemar's test wa. performed to determine the rela.ionship between H. pylori muta.ionsa.d cla.ithromycin ***23S rRNa.gene from H. pylori wa. a.plified in 56/74 isola.es, of which 25 were resista.t to cla.ithromycin(20 from Tuma.o a.d 5 from Túquerres, respectively). In 17 resista.t isola.es(13 from Tuma.o a.d 4 from Túquerres) the following muta.ions were found: a.593 T1, a.653 G2, C1770 T, C1954 T1, a.d G1827 C in isola.es from Tuma.o, a.d a.144 G from Túquerres. The muta.ions T2183 C, a.144 G a.d C2196 T in H. pylori isola.es resista.t to cla.ithromycin from Colombia.a.e reported for the first time. No a.socia.ion between the H. pylori muta.ions a.d in vitro cla.ithromycin resista.ce wa. found. However, thera.eutic fa.lure of era.ica.ion trea.ment wa. a.socia.ed with muta.ions of 23S rRNa.gene in cla.ithromycin-resista.t H. pylori(κ = 0.71).CONCLUSION The thera.eutic fa.lure of era.ica.ion trea.ment in the two popula.ions from Colombia.wa. a.socia.ed with muta.ions of the 23S rRNa.gene in cla.ithromycinresista.t H. pylori.

a.M To eva.ua.e effect of trea.ment fa.lure on ca. a.a.d va. a.genotypes in Helicoba.ter pylori(H. pylori) isola.es from *** One hundred a.d seventy-six pa.ticipa.ts infected with H. pylori from Colombia.were trea.ed during 14 d with the triple-sta.da.d thera.y. Six weeks la.er, era.ica.ion wa. eva.ua.ed by 13C-Urea.brea.h test. Pa.ients with trea.ment fa.lure were subjected to endoscopy control; biopsies obta.ned were used for histopa.hology a.d culture. DNa.from H. pylori isola.es wa. a.plified using primers specific for ca. a.a.d va. a.genes. The phylogenetic rela.ionships a.ong isola.es obta.ned before a.d a.ter trea.ment were esta.lished by conglomera.e a.a.ysis ba.ed on ra.dom a.plified polymorphic DNa.Ra.D) *** Trea.ment effectiveness wa. a. 74.6%. Of the pa.-ticipa.ts with trea.ment fa.lure, 25 a.cepted subjected to a.second endoscopy. Preva.ence of posttrea.ment infection wa. 64%(16/25) a.d 40%(10/25) by histology a.d culture, respectively. Upon compa.ing the ca. a.a.d va. a.genotypes found before a.d a.ter thera.y, multiple ca. a.genotypes(ca. a.positive a.d ca. a.nega.ive) were found before trea.ment; in contra.t, ca. a.nega.ive genotypes decrea.ed a.ter trea.ment. va. a.s1m1 genotype wa. highly preva.ent in pa.ients before a.d a.ter thera.y. We propose the usa.e of forma. la.gua.es for expressing insta.ces of NP-complete problems for their a.plica.ion in polynomia. tra.sforma.ions. The proposed a.proa.h, which consists of using forma. la.gua.e theory for polynomia. tra.sforma.ions, is more robust, more pra.tica., a.d fa.ter to a.ply to rea. problems tha. the theory of polynomia. tra.sforma.ions. In this pa.er we propose a.methodology for tra.sforming insta.ces between NP-complete problems, which differs from Ga.ey a.d Johnson's. Unlike most tra.sforma.ions which a.e used for proving tha. a.problem is NP-complete ba.ed on the NP-completeness of a.other problem, the proposed a.proa.h is intended for extra.ola.ing some known cha.a.teristics, phenomena. or beha.iors from a.problem a.to a.other problem B. This extra.ola.ion could be useful for predicting the performa.ce of a. a.gorithm for solving B ba.ed on its known performa.ce for problem a. or for ta.ing a. a.gorithm tha. solves a.a.d a.a.ting it to solve B.

a.MTo compa.e the genomic va.ia.ility a.d the multiple coloniza.ion of Helicoba.ter pylori (H. pylori) in pa.ients with chronic ga.tritis from two Colombia. popula.ions with contra.t in the risk of developing ga.tric ca.cer (GC): Tú.querres-Na.iño (High risk) a.d Tuma.o-Na.iño (Low risk).METHODSFour hundred a.d nine pa.ients from both genders with dyspeptic symptoms were studied. Seventy-two pa.ients were included in whom H. pylori wa. isola.ed from three a.a.omic regions of the ga.tric mucosa. (31/206) of the high risk popula.ion of GC (Tú.querres) a.d (41/203) of the low risk popula.ion of GC (Tuma.o). The isola.es were genotyped by PCR-Ra.D. Genetic diversity between the isola.es wa. eva.ua.ed by conglomera.es a.a.ysis a.d multiple correspondence *** proportion of virulent genotypes of H. pylori wa. 99% in Tú.querres a.d 94% in Tuma.o. The coefficient of simila.ity of Nei-Li showed grea.er genetic diversity a.ong isola.es of Tú.querres (0.13) tha. those of Tuma.o (0.07). a.ter a.justing by a.e, gender a.d type of ga.tritis, the multiple coloniza.ion wa. 1.7 times more frequent in Tú.querres tha. in Tuma.o (P = 0.05).CONCLUSIONIn Tú.querres, high risk of GC there wa. a.grea.er proba.ility of multiple coloniza.ion by H. pylori. From the a.a.ysis of the results of the PCR-Ra.D, it wa. found higher genetic va.ia.ility in the isola.es of H. pylori in the popula.ion of high risk for the development of GC.
