COVID-19: Feelings Experienced by Nurses, Physiotherapists, and Medical Doctors in a Brazilian Field Hospital

Facing critical situations such as the ones triggered by COVID-19 may take healthcare professionals to confront their psychological resources, which may induce a higher stress level. We aimed to understand the feelings experienced by nurses, physiotherapists, and medical doctors in a field hospital dedicated to patients with COVID-19 in the biggest city of Brazil. Methods: We performed a qualitative study in a state field hospital in s?o Paulo city, Brazil, in a sample of 25 volunteer healthcare professionals. Participants answered to a sociodemographic electronic survey and were subjected to an individual semi-structured on-site interview. Results: Participants were mostly female (68%), comprised eight nurses, eight physiotherapists, and nine medical doctors, had an average age of 36.8 years, and were professionally experienced. speech analysis revealed two thematic categories (related to work and assistance in the pandemic) and 11 subcategories: adaptation to the scenario, stressing experience, psychological support, difficulties with workwear, safety with workwear, non-verbal communication, empathy, patient comfort, outstanding experiences, major challenges, and teamwork. Conclusion: Nurses, physiotherapists, and medical doctors’ experiences while working in the field hospital were permeated by both positive and negative feelings. Those feelings originated directly from the fear of the unknown when dealing with a new disease without well-established scientific evidence, the use of medical workwear for long periods, and communication and environmental difficulties. In contrast, positive feelings, related to teamwork and empathy, arose and overlapped with the difficulties.

Objectives： Evaluating the addition effect of./. insularis extract and FsH on the survival, activation and ROs production after in vitro culture of ovine preantral follicles enclosed in ovarian tissue. Methods： In the first experiment, ovarian fragments were fixed （non-cultured control） or in vitro cultured in α-MEM＋（cultured control）, α-MEM＋ supplemented with FsH 50 ng/mL, or in α-MEM＋supplemented with J. insularis （JUs0.3; 1.25 or 5 mg/mL） for 1 or 7 days, at 39℃, 5% CO2. In the second experiment, fragments were fixed or cultured in α-MEM＋ supplemented with anethole 300 μg/mL ＋ FsH 50 ng/mL or in α-MEM＋ supplemented with anethole 300μg/mL ＋ 0.3 mg/mL JUs. Key findings： JUs0.3 was the only treatment that maintained the percentage of morphologically normal follicles similar to non-cultured control even after 7 days of culture. After 7 days of culture, a higher （p 〈 0.05） percentage of developing follicles was observed in JUs5 treatment compared with the other treatments except JUs 1.25. In the second experiment, FsH maintained the percentage of normal follicles and promoted activation of primordial follicles. A reduction （p 〈 0.05） of stromal cell density was observed in MEM＋＋ANE supplemented with JUs or FsH. Conclusions： J. insularis in a concentration-dependent manner maintained the levels of ROs and improved in vitro follicular survival and activation of ovine primordial follicles.

Endoscopic ultrasonography is the most accurate procedure for the evaluation of subepithelial lesions. The finding of a homogeneous, hyperechoic, well-delimited lesion, originating from the third layer of the gastrointestinal tract(submucosa) suggests a benign tumor,generally lipoma. As other differential diagnoses have not been reported, echoendoscopists might not pursue a definitive pathological diagnosis or follow-up the patient. This case series aims to broaden the spectrum of differential diagnosis for duodenal hyperechoic third layer subepithelial lesions by providing four different and relevant pathologies with this echoendoscopic pattern.

Performance Evaluation of Quicksort with GPU Dynamic Parallelism for Gene-Expression Quantile Normalization

High-density oligonucleotide microarrays allow several millions of genetic markers in a single experiment to be observed. Current bioinformatics tools for gene-expression quantile data normalization are unable to process such huge data sets. In parallel with this reality, the huge volume of molecular data produced by current high-throughput technologies in modern molecular biology has increased at a similar pace, challenging our capacity to process and understand data. On the other hand, the arrival of CUDA (compute unified device architecture) has unveiled the extraordinary power of GPUs (graphics processing units) to accelerate data intensive general purpose computing more and more as time goes by. In this work, we have evaluated the use of dynamic parallelism for ordering gene-expression data, where the management of kernels launching can be done not only by the host, but also by the device. Each sample has more than 6.5 million genes. We optimized the Quicksort parallel implementation available in the CUDA-5.5 Toolkit samples and compared the performance of the sequential Quicksort algorithm from the GNU C Library (glibc) and with the parallel radix sort implementation available in the CUDPP-2.1 library. The Quicksort parallel implementation is designed to run on the GPU Kepler architecture, which supports dynamic parallelism. The results show that in the studied application the GPU parallel version with dynamic parallelism attains speed-ups in the data-sorting step. However, to achieve an effective overall speed-up considering the radix sort algorithm, performance of the whole application needs further optimizations.
