In this paper, we determine n（f） for all self-maps f when M is a closed 3-manifold with S^2× R geometry. The calculation of n（f） relies on the induced homomorphisms of f on the fundamental group and on the second homotopy group of M.

Because total UV （TUV） in the UV-A region is 100 times higher than in the UV-B region, UV-A is a considerable compo- nent when calculating erythemal UV （EUV） and UV-index. The ratio of EUV to TUV in the UV-A value [EUV（A）/TUV（A）] is investigated to convert the EUV（A） from TUV（A） for broadband observation. The representative value of EUV（A）/TUV（A）, from the simulation study, is 6.9 × 10^- 4 changing from 6.1 ×10^-4 to 7.0 × 10^ -4 as aerosol optical depth, total ozone and solar zenith angle change. By adopting the observational data of EUV（B） and TUV（A） from UV-biometer measurements at Yonsei University [（37.57°n, 126.95°E）, 84 m above sea level], the EUV irradiance increases to 15% of EUV（B） due to the consideration of EUV（A） from the data of TUV（A） observation. Compared to the total EUV observed from the Brewer spec- trophotometer at the same site, the EUV（B） from the UV-biometer observes only 95% of total EUV, and its underestimation is caused by neglecting the effect of UV-A. However, the sum of EUV（B） and EUV（A） [EUV（A＋B）] from two UV-biometers is 10% larger than the EUV from the Brewer spectrophotometer because of the spectral overlap effect in the range 320-340 nm. The correction factor for the overlap effect adjusts 8% of total EUV.

·AIM:To evaluate visual outcomes and changes in fluid after administering monthly anti-vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)injections to treat neovascular agerelated macular degeneration(n AMD)with subretinal fluid(SRF)and pigment epithelial detachment(PED).·METHODS:This prospective study included eyes with n AMD previously treated with as-needed anti-VEGF *** patients were treated with six monthly intravitreal injections of *** volumetric segmentation analyses of the SRF and PED were *** main outcome measures included best-corrected visual acuity(BCVA),and SRF and PED volumes.·RESULTS:Twenty eyes of 20 patients were included in this *** the 6-month follow-up,BCVA and PED volume did not change significantly(P=0.110 and 0.999,respectively)but the mean SRF volume decreased from 0.53±0.82 mm3 at baseline to 0.08±0.23 mm3(P=0.002).The absorption rate of the SRF volume was negatively correlated with the duration of previous antiVEGF treatment(P=0.029).Seven of the 20 eyes(35%)showed a fluid-free macula and significant improvement in BCVA(P=0.036)by month 6.·COnCLUSIOn:Quantifying the SRF can precisely determine the patient’s responsiveness to anti-VEGF treatment of n AMD.

The traditionally used oriental herbal medicine Moutan Cortex Radicis [MCR; Paeonia Suffruticosa Andrews(Paeoniaceae)] exerts anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, and analgesic effects. In the present study, we investigated the therapeutic effects of differently fractioned MCR extracts in a 6-hydroxydopamine(OHDA)-induced Parkinson's disease model and neuro-blastoma B65 cells. Ethanol-extracted MCR was fractionated by n-hexane, butanol, and distilled water. Adult Sprague-Dawley rats were treated first with 20 μg of 6-OHDA, followed by three MCR extract fractions(100 or 200 mg·kg^(-1)) for 14 consecutive days. In the behavioral rotation experiment, the MCR extract-treated groups showed significantly decreased number of net turns compared with the 6-OHDA control group. The three fractions also significantly inhibited the reduction in tyrosine hydroxylase-positive cells in the substantia nigra pars compacta following 6-OHDA neurotoxicity. Western blotting analysis revealed significantly reduced tyrosine hydroxylase expression in the substantia nigra pars compacta in the 6-OHDA-treated group, which was significantly inhibited by the n-hexane or distilled water fractions of MCR. B65 cells were exposed to the extract fractions for 24 h prior to addition of 6-OHDA for 30 min; treatment with n-hexane or distilled water fractions of MCR reduced apoptotic cell death induced by 6-OHDA neurotoxicity and inhibited nitric oxide production and neuronal nitric oxide synthase expression. These results showed that n-hexane-and distilled water-fractioned MCR extracts inhibited 6-OHDA-induced neurotoxicity by suppressing nitric oxide production and neuronal nitric oxide synthase activity, suggesting that MCR extracts could serve as a novel candidate treatment for the patients with Parkinson's disease.
