This essay is written in the form of a mosaic. It intersperses simple language, primary and secondary quotes within text, footnotes and epigraphs from classical thinkers and cutting-edge researchers. It invites readers, be they casual or experienced, to a certain play of irony and fantasy in their reflection on the main thrust of the argument. The essay is divided into two parts. The first seeks to introduce the readers to some of the main concerns of frontier science and the Philosophy of Science at the beginning of this millennium： the Universe Models proposed by scientists from fields related to Physics and Mathematics in their eagerness to explain more and more discoveries and to lay out a solid new scientific paradigm. We are convinced that the leap between sidelines and insides--when confronting straightforward style with systematic contrast--does not lessen the rigor of research, and serves to lighten the density of the topic by projecting nuances and resonance onto the logos and its concatenation. It may also serve to vivify field and figure, in order to recreate the fertile delight that generally comes from a good reading of deep *** the second part, we attempt to subtly demonstrate a fortunate discovery： the validity and solidity of the laws of Nature, upheld on the basis of their abstract mathematical expression （the Number Phi （φ）, the goldennumber or golden section）, which despite having faded into oblivion, buried under centuries of disuse in the fields of Aesthetics and Art, has proven to be useful as a critical instrument and a template for concrete solutions that we wish to share. We believe that this Model may serve not only to answer some of the scientific issues that we have referred to, but to redirect the discussion itself, and break the logjam of many frontier forums that place conditions on the application of the Models pro- duced over the last century. Different treatments were conducted over Ti6Al4V samples in order to produce a surface modification to increase cell attachment and *** surface treatments evaluated in this study were as follows:etching with sulfuric acid/hydrochloric acid,oxidizing with hydrogen peroxide and low-pressure oxygen plasma *** contrast to other works found in the literature,this research conducts a comparison between different chemical and physical treatments in terms of different assays for surface characterization:X-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscope(SEM),energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy,water contact angle,release of vanadium ions and cell viability tests(MTT)of human osteoblasts(hFOB 1.19).Cell morphology over the different substrates was also studied by SEM *** was found that plasma and peroxide treatments increase the O/Ti ratio at the titanium surface and provide an increase in cell *** the other hand,acid etching provides a superhydrophilic surface which is not able to improve the cell attachment of human osteoblasts.

Neurological complications associated with HIV-1/AIDS are being recognized with a high frequency that parallels the increased number of AIDS cases. The early infiltration by HIV-1 into the nervous system can cause primary and/or secondary neurological complications. The most common neurocognitive disorder is AIDS Dementia Complex (ADC). In developing countries of Asia the three most opportunistic infections are tuberculosis (TB), cryptococcosis, and Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. Therefore, it is expected that secondary neurological complications due to TB and cryptococcosis will be the most common cause of morbility and mortality in HIV-1/AIDS cases in China. Research of NeuroAIDS in China is necessary to understand the impact and the biology of HIV-1 in the nervous system. Future studies would include, the molecular epidemiology and the description of opportunistic infections associated to HIV-1; the neuropathological description of primary and secondary HIV-1 complications in different groups; the HIV-1 neurot- ropism and immune response studies for China’s unique HIV-1 strains and recombinant forms derived from the nervous system, including experimental models such as the use of transgenic rats; and the study of potential resistant virus, primarily when the anti-retroviral therapy (ART) has not full access in the brain.

A novel porous and crystalline two-dimensional(2D)electrochemically active covalent organic framework(COF)based on ortho-quinone units has been prepared as an innovative approach towards the development of organic cathode materials with multiple redox sites as an efficient electrocatalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction(ORR).In contrast with most of the previously reported COFs as electrocatalysts for the ORR,the electrocatalytic application of this material towards ORR has been investigated without adding any metal or conductive supporting material and avoiding any additional carbonization ***,the electrochemical properties of the COF material have been compared with two analogue amorphous frameworks with similar chemical composition,which points out the important role of the enhanced crystallinity and porosity of the COF network in its superior performance as an electrocatalyst towards ORR.

Microwave Dried Carrot Pomace as a Source of Fiber and Carotenoids

Carrot pomace is a major by-product obtained during the industrial juice extraction process, which is discarded contributing to environmental pollution. This residue is rich in fiber, and contains high amounts of carotenoids and phenolic compounds that could contribute to its application as functional ingredient, improving the quality of foods and helping to reduce the environmental problem. In this study, carrot pomace powders obtained by microwave or hot air drying were incorporated into cookies in order to improve their phytochemical content. Cookies were prepared using a traditional cookie recipe substituting 30% of the wheat flour for either of the carrot pomace powders. Fiber, carotenoids and phenolic compounds were determined;image analysis and acceptability of the cookies were also conducted. The substitution of 30% of wheat flour for carrot pomace powders increased 3.7 fold the total dietary fiber of cookies, from 7.13 g/100gto26.44 g/100g;accounting the 7.4% of fiber daily intake with the consumption of one cookie (7 g). A similar pattern was found in the content of carotenoids and phenolic compounds. Carrot pomace dried with microwaves had the highest amount of these bioactive compounds. β-carotene, epicatechin, gallic and ferulic acids were identified in cookies with microwave carrot pomace powder. The cookies incorporated with carrot pomace powders exhibited improved antioxidant properties because of the increase in the phytochemical content. Acceptable cookies with appealing orange color were obtained. The results indicated that the replacement of wheat flour for carrot pomace powders yielded dietary fiber enriched cookies with improved carotenoid content.

First Characterization of Escherichia coliStrains Isolated from Wildlife Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus) in the Southeast of Spain

The aim of the present study was to characterize a collection of Escherichia coli strains isolated from asymptomatic griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus) during a reintroduction program in the southeast of Spain, in order to establish if griffon vulture could play a role in the spread of resistant or potentially pathogenic E. coli strains. For this purpose, 14 E. coli strains obtained from 10 griffon vulture were studied to establish their serotypes, phylogroups, virulencegene profiles and antimicrobial resistances. High heterogeneity was observed within the 14 strains isolated which belonged to three phylogroups (A, B1 and D), 8 serogroups (O2, O21, O29, O60, 073, O78, O103 and O141) and 13 different serotypes. Out of 34 genes screened, we have detected eight virulence genes that are typical of extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC) (fimH, fimAvMT78, iroN, iucD, cvaC, iss, traT and tsh);however, none of the studied strains showed the ExPEC status. The 14 strains were also analyzed for the production of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) and for antimicrobial resistances. None of the 14 strains were ESBL-producing E. coli, but high resistance-prevalences to ampicillin and cotrimoxazole were detected. To our knowledge, this is the first characterization of E. coli strains isolated from griffon vulture and although they did not show high virulencegene scores, they showed cotrimoxazole resistance.

Effect Found in the Combination of Kitasamycin with Other Antibiotics Used against Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae

Background: Combinations of antibiotics are used to increase the therapeutic options via the simultaneous activities of two compounds. The goals of combination therapy are to resolve the bacterial infection while reducing the treatment cost. The use of kitasamycin is used frequently and in addition to other antibiotics, the desired combinations were not found. Methods: Fields strains: we use serotypes 1, 3, 5 y 7. Microbial culturing: The serotypes 1, 3, 5 y 7 was identified. Antibiotics and Reagents: The antibiotics used were kitasamycin;enrofloxacin and oxolinic acid. The following combinations were tested: a) kitasamycin with enrofloxacin;b) kitasamycin with norfloxacin;and c) kitasamycin with oxolinic acid. Preparation of bacterial suspensions: The cultures were adjusted to a concentration of 5 colony-forming units per ml (CFU/ml) using the same sterile culture medium as the diluent. Determination of the fractional inhibitory concentrations (FICs): To test each combination and their interactions and to calculate the fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) of each antibiotic. Calculation of the index of the fractional minimum inhibitory concentration (FMIC): The FMIC index was calculated by applying the following formula: FIC index = FIC of antibiotic A/FIC of antibiotic B. Results: What was found showed that: A combination of kitasamycin and norfloxacin has been shown to have an indifferent effect. A combination of kitasamycin and enrofloxacin had antagonistic effects against all of the Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae serotypes studied. Finally, a combination of kitasamycin and oxolinic acid had antagonist effects against serotypes 1, 3 and 5 and a synergistic effect against serotype 7. Conclusion: The “in vitro” combination Kitasamycin-Norfloxacin showed an indifferent effect, and combination Kitasamycin and Enrofloxacin demonstrated an antagonistic interaction between these two anti

Arylamine N-acetyltransferase(NAT; E.C. 2.***.1.5) enzymes are responsible for the biotransformation of several arylamine and hydrazine drugs by acetylation. In this process, the acetyl group transferred to the acceptor substrate produces NAT deacetylation and, in consequence, it is susceptible of degradation. Sirtuins are protein deacetylases, dependent on nicotine adenine dinucleotide,which perform post-translational modifications on cytosolic proteins. To explore possible sirtuin participation in the enzymatic activity of arylamine NATs, the expression levels of NAT1, NAT2,SIRT1 and SIRT6 in peripheral blood mononuclear cells(PBMC) from healthy subjects were examined by flow cytometry and Western blot. The in situ activity of the sirtuins on NAT enzymatic activity was analyzed by HPLC, in the presence or absence of an agonist(resveratrol) and inhibitor(nicotinamide) of sirtuins. We detected a higher percentage of positive cells for NAT2 in comparison with NAT1, and higher numbers of SIRT1t cells compared to SIRT6 in lymphocytes. In situ NAT2 activity in the presence of NAM inhibitors was higher than in the presence of its substrate, but not in the presence ofresveratrol. In contrast, the activity of NAT1 was not affected by sirtuins. These results showed that NAT2 activity might be modified by sirtuins.
