cardiovascular disease is a major cause of morbidity and mortality throughout the world. Most cardiovascular diseases, such as ischemic heart disease and cardiomyopathy, are associated with loss of functional cardiomyocytes. Unfortunately, the heart has a limited regenerative capacity and is not able to replace these cardiomyocytes once lost. In recent years, stem cells have been put forward as a potential source for cardiac regeneration. Pre-clinical studies that use stem cell-derived cardiac cells show promising results. The mechanisms,though, are not well understood, results have been variable, sometimes transient in the long term, and often without a mechanistic *** are still severalmajor hurdles to be taken. Stem cell-derived cardiac cells should resemble original cardiac cell types and be able to integrate in the damaged heart. Integration requires administration of stem cell-derived cardiac cells at the right time using the right mode of delivery. Once delivered, transplanted cells need vascularization, electrophysiological coupling with the injured heart, and prevention of immunological rejection. Finally, stem cell therapy needs to be safe, reproducible, and affordable. In this review, we will give an introduction to the principles of stem cell based cardiac repair.

Synthesis and characterization of caAl_xO_y:Eu^(2+) phosphors prepared using solution-combustion method

Europium-doped calcium aluminate(caAlxOy:Eu2+) phosphors were obtained at low temperatures(500 oc) by the solution-combustion of corresponding metal nitrate-urea solution *** particle size and morphology and the structural and luminescent properties of the as-synthesized phosphors were examined by means of scanning electron microscopy(SEM),X-ray diffraction(XRD),Auger spectroscopy,transmission electron spectroscopy(TEM) and photoluminescence(PL).It was found that the ca:Al molar ratios showed greatly influence not only on the particle size and morphology,but also on their PL spectra and *** the ca:Al molar ratios increasing from 6:100 to 26:100,the structure of as-synthesized phosphor changed from caAl12O19 to monoclinic caAl2O4 and the dominant emitting light from red to blue,implying that the oxidation state of doped europium ions changed from trivalent to divalent due to the structure variation of host lattice.A blue phosphor with almost pure phase can be easily prepared by solution combustion method with suitable ca:Al molar ratio.

Assessment of the long-term visual and anatomical outcomes of ranibizumab to treat neovascular age-related macular degeneration

AIM： To investigate the long-term visual and anatomical outcomes of patients who underwent intravitreal ranibizumab monotherapy to treat neovascular age-related macular degeneration（AMD） and followed-up for at least 2 ***： A total of 74 eyes of 74 patients who underwent ranibizumab monotherapy for neovascular AMD were included in this retrospective ***： The average patient age was 72.1±6.5（range, 57-85）y, the average follow-up time 46.2±13.1（range, 24-75）mo, and the average number of visits 24.1±9.5（range, 8-48）. The mean number of injections in year 1 was 4.5, 1.6 in year 2, 0.9 in year 3, 0.4 on year 4, and 0.1 in the following years. Within the entire follow-up period, the mean number of injections was 7.6±4.4（range, 2-21）. The mean visual acuity was 48.1±15（range, 15-76） letters at baseline and 45.7±19（range, 7-75） at year 5. The mean central macular thickness was 303±78（range, 178-552） μm at baseline and 251±51（range, 138-359） μm at year 5. Scars developed in 47（63.5%） eyes at the end of the follow-up period, and atrophy was evident in 6（8.1%） ***： Ranibizumab monotherapy can stabilize visual acuity for a mean period of 4 y in patients with neovascular AMD.

Aerosol-cloud-precipitation interactions:A challenging problem in regional environment and climate research

Aerosols affect clouds in two broad ways：（i） presence of more number of aerosols leads to formation of more smaller droplets, and reduces coalescence, resulting in brighter clouds that reflect more solar energy back to space, hence they contribute to cooling of the Earth＇s surface and （ii） numerous smaller cloud droplets tend to reduce precipitation and change the extent of cloud cover and increase cloud lifetime and albedo. One of our recent studies on aerosols over the lndo-Gangetic Plains （IGP） relative to the pristine oceans to the south of Indian Ocean showed that highly absorbing aerosols could potentially lead to the revival of active condition preceded by long break. The absorption of solar radiation by aerosols such as black carbon and desert dust produces surface cooling and local stabilization of lower atmosphere. This stability effect is overcome by the enhanced moisture convergence due to the meridional gradient of aerosol-induced heating. In some other studies, we showed association between cloud thickness and cloud to sub-cloud ratio （ScR）, aerosol variability （in terms of aerosol optical depth and aerosol index） and monsoon precipitation and climate over regional scale. This paper provides an overview of some salient results that have been obtained from the studies conducted, using the ground- and space-based active and passive remote sensing techniques, at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology （IITM）, Pune, India in the recent decade.

Surgical treatment for liver cancer

Primary liver cancer is amongst the commonest tumors worldwide,particularly in parts of the developing world,and is increasing in incidence. Over the past three decades,surgical hepatic resection has evolved from a high risk,resource intensive procedure with limited application,to a safe and commonly performed operation with a range of indications. This article reviews the approach to surgical resection for malignancies such as hepatocellular cancer,metastatic liver de-posits and neuroendocrine tumors. Survival data after resection is also reviewed,as well as indications for curative resection.

characteristics of a GaN-based Gunn diode for THz signal generation

A generalized large-signal computer simulation program for a Gunn oscillator has been developed. The properties of a Gunn diode oscillator based on the widely explored GaN, are investigated using the developed program. The results show some interesting properties in GaN Gunn diodes which are not seen in GaAs and InP diodes. An output power of 1400 kW/cm^2 is achieved from the GaN Gunn diode, as compared to 4.9 kW/cm^2 from a GaAs diode.

A New Method of Synthesis of Azo Schiff Base Ligands with Azo and Azomethine Donors： Synthesis of N-4-Methoxybenzylidene-2-（3-hydroxyphenylazo）-5-hydroxyaniline and Its Nickel（Ⅱ） complex

A new method for the synthesis of azo Schiff an base ligand in which the azo and azomethine groups are coordination sites was developed through a Schiff base precursor. The precursor, N-4-methoxybenzylidene-3-hydroxyphenylamine （SB） derived from 3-aminophenol was regioselectively coupled with a diazonium ion para to the hydroxyl group of the amine component of the Schiff base. The para selectivity was controlled by the directing effect of the hydroxyl group. The ligand and its nickel（Ⅱ） complex were characterized by elemental analyses, IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The analytical and spectral data supported the mononuclear formulation of the complex with metal to ligand ratio （M ： L = 1 ： 2） and suggested a square planar geometry for the complex.

control strategy for seamless transition from islanded to interconnected operation mode of microgrids

Microgrids can operate either interconnected to the utility grid or disconnected forming an island. The transition between these modes can cause transient overcurrents or power oscillations jeopardizing the equipment safety or the system stability. This paper proposes a local multi agent control method for a seamless transfer between the islanded and interconnected modes of operation with agents implemented into the microgrid central switch(McS) and into the microsources inverters. The McS agent supervises the grid status and controls the switch for the transition of the microgrid through the different operation modes, while it communicates locally with the inverter agents of the microsources. The inverter agents undertake the synchronization process in case of reconnecting and change the inverter control mode depending on the grid status. Simulation and experimental results are presented to show the performance and feasibility of the proposed strategy.

Graphene oxide(GO)induced enhancement of elastomer properties showed a great deal of potential in recent years,but it is still limited by the barrier of the complicated synthesis ***(SLA),used in fabrication of thermosets and very recently in“flexible”polymers with elastomeric properties,presents itself as simple and user-friendly method for integration of GO into *** this work,it was first time demonstrated that GO loadings can be incorporated into commercial flexible photopolymer resins to successfully fabricate GO/elastomer nanocomposites via readily accessible,consumer-oriented SLA *** material properties of the resulting polymer was characterized and *** mechanical strength,stiffness,and the elongation of the resulting polymer decreased with the addition of *** thermal properties were also adversely affected upon the increase in the GO content based on differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis *** was proposed that the GO agglomerates within the 3D printed composites,can result in significant change in both mechanical and thermal properties of the resulting *** study demonstrated the possibility for the development of the GO/elastomer nanocomposites after the optimization of the GO/“Hexible”photoreactive resin formulation for SLA with suitable annealing process of the composite in future.
