CD271 as a marker to identify mesenchymal stem cells from diverse sources before culture

Mesenchymal stem cells, due to their characteristics are ideal candidates for cellular therapy. Currently, in culture these cells are defined by their adherence to plastic, specific surface antigen expression and multipotent differentiation potential. However, the in vivo identification of mesenchymal stem cells, before culture, is not so well established. Pre-culture identification markers would ensure higher purity than that obtained with selection based on adherence to plastic. Up until now, CD271 has been described as the most specific marker for the characterization andpurification of human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells. This marker has been shown to be specifically expressed by these cells. Thus, CD271 has been proposed as a versatile marker to selectively isolated and expand multipotent mesenchymal stem cells with both immunosuppressive and lymphohematopoietic engraftment-promoting properties. This review focuses on this marker, specifically on identification of mesenchymal stem cells from different tissues. Literature revision suggests that CD271 should not be defined as a universal marker to identify mesenchymal stem cells before culture from different sources. In the case of bone marrow or adipose tissue, CD271 could be considered a quite suitable marker; however this marker seems to be inadequate for the isolation of mesenchymal stem cells from other tissues such as umbilical cord blood or wharton's jelly among others.

AIM: To assess and compare the impact of a daily disposable contact lens(CL) with high water content on the ocular surface and comfort of the presbyopic and nonpresbyopic population after one day of use. METHODS: Totally 20 presbyopes and 30 non-presbyopes non-contact wearers were fitted with nesofilcon A CLs. CL thickness was measured to assess material stability during daily wear, and ocular surface parameters were also assessed. Optical quality was analyzed for all cases. In addition, CL comfort was rated.RESULTS: No significant differences were found in CL thickness, tear film osmolarity, average tear break-up time, bulbar redness, central corneal thickness, corneal volume, root-mean-square of higher-order aberrations(RMS of HOAs) and vertical and horizontal coma, either as a function of the group or time of use. A significant decrease in tear meniscus height and first break-up of the tear film was found in the presbyopic group(P=0.038; P=0.007 respectively). A decrease in spherical aberration coefficient was found after CL insertion(P=0.031 monofocal CL; P=0.023 low addition multifocal CL; P=0.016 high addition multifocal CL). Multifocal CL were thicker than monofocal CL(P=0.045). Comparison between groups showed more discomfort in presbyopes than non-presbyopes(P=0.003).CONCLUSION: This study evidence that the behavior of the daily disposable CL with high water content seems to be stable during the day of use. Ocular parameters measured during wear show that CL behavior is the same for presbyopes and non-presbyopes, being more uncomfortable for presbyopes.

The identification of Chinese medicinal plants was conducted to rely on ampelographic manual assessment by experts.More recently,machine learning algorithms for pattern recognition have been successfully applied to leaf recognition in other plant species.These new tools make the classification of Chinese medicinal plants easier,more efficient and cost effective.This study showed comparative results between machine learning models obtained from two methods:i)a morpho-colorimetric method and ii)a visible(VIS)/Near Infrared(NIR)spectral analysis from sampled leaves of 20 different Chinese medicinal plants.Specifically,the automated image analysis and VIS/NIR spectral based parameters obtained from leaves were used separately as inputs to construct customized artificial neural network(ANN)models.Results showed that the ANN model developed using the morpho-colorimetric parameters as inputs(Model A)had an accuracy of 98.3%in the classification of leaves for the 20 medicinal plants studied.In the case of the model based on spectral data from leaves(Model B),the ANN model obtained using the averaged VIS/NIR spectra per leaf as inputs showed 92.5%accuracy for the classification of all medicinal plants used.Model A has the advantage of being cost effective,requiring only a normal document scanner as measuring instrument.This method can be adapted for non-destructive assessment of leaves in-situ by using portable wireless scanners.Model B combines the fast,non-destructive advantages of VIS/NIR spectroscopy,which can be used for rapid and non-invasive identification of Chinese medicinal plants and other applications by analyzing specific light spectra overtones from leaves to assess concentration of pigments such as chlorophyll,anthocyanins and others that are related active compounds from the medicinal plants.

The present study aims to develop multilayer barrier-bioactive hybrid sol-gel coatings from a mixture of the silane precursors tetraethylorthosilicate(TEOS)and glycidoxypropyltriethoxysilane(GPTMS)deposited on the Elektron 21 magnesium alloy.The purpose of the inner layer(barrier coating)was to provide corrosion protection to the magnesium alloy,whereas the outer layer(bioactive coating)was doped with different Ca and Mg contents to produce a bioactive material.The coatings were characterised using scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and their corrosion behaviour was evaluated by anodic polarisation and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy after immersion in simulated body fluid(SBF)at 37±0.5°C.The experimental results showed that the multilayer coatings increased the corrosion resistance of the alloy up to three orders of magnitude during immersion in SBF solution.On the other hand,the presence of Ca and Mg in the bioactive coating promoted the growth of apatite-like phases.However,an increment of salt content favoured the formation of porous coatings,which allowed the access of the electrolyte to the substrate leading to their rapid deterioration.Despite the latter,this research endorses the premise that the TEOS-GPTMS hybrid system represents a promising alternative to produce bifunctional barrier-bioactive coatings.

The purpose of this study is to determine the properties of the solvents responsible of the chromatographic phenomenon. A simple and homogeneous system of ascending chromatography on paper is described, allowing varying only one of the factors constituting it. This method made it possible to determine constants by means of a simple equation. The validity of the method is deduced from the good agreement between its mathematical expression and the experimental values obtained.

This paper evaluates the influence that information processing routes have on omni-shopping behavior,as well as analyzing the consequences of this behavior for retailers through a cognitive-affective approach.A sample of 705 mobile phone users was used for this purpose.The results obtained using the binomial logit model in a first phase and later with an application of structural equations,reflect that omni-shoppers have a more planned purchasing behavior than those who develop a one-stop shopping behavior.They search for information in a rational and deep way,spending time and effort.As for the consequences that the omni-channel behavior has for retailers,it has been found that those omni-shoppers who experience negative emotions with the retailer,have a low perceived value of the company and their satisfaction will also be negative.

This paper analyzes the effect of the existence or not of failures,as well as the response of retailers to an eventual failure,influences the emotions developed by research shoppers.The empirical research is based on a survey with a sample of 636 mobile phone users.The results derived from the application of a structural equations model indicate that research shoppers develop more intense positive emotions when they do not have any complain with the retailers or if they solved the failure satisfactorily.Likewise,the relationship between research shoppers and the development of negative emotions is less intense when customers do not have any complain with the retailer or the company has solved the failure satisfactorily.

Oxygen Therapy in Critical Care: A Double Edged Sword

The oxygen therapy is a universal treatment in the hospital setting, especially in the critical care units. The purpose of this therapy is to avoid hypoxemia and to ensure an adequate supply of oxygen to the tissues. But often we overlook the potential adverse effects of oxygen therapy. Oxygen produces lung damage and induces apoptosis and cell death creating an imbalance between the production of reactive species of oxygen and the antioxidant mechanisms. The oxygen therapy inhibits systemic adaptive changes induced by hypoxia, disrupting compensatory mechanisms and causing deleterious effects. We are faced with a challenge in order to treat patients with respiratory failure, counterbalancing hypoxia with hyperoxia-induced damage and introducing therapy lines that are innovative but not risk-free as permissive hypoxemia. Currently many questions remain unresolved and there are not enough clinical studies that validate the therapeutic optimal oxygenation ranges. These ranges may differ depending on each patient and the underlying disease.
