Stroke care during the COVID-19 outbreak in Spain: the experience of Spanish stroke units

Background and purpose Spain has been heavily affected by *** of resources for managing the outbreak might have caused a disruption in stroke *** study analyses the impact on stroke care of reorganising the healthcare system in response to the first COVID-19 outbreak peak in Spain and the strategies adopted by Spanish stroke units to deal with this *** and methods We obtained data from a structured survey sent to the responsible of stroke units across the *** recorded the number of strokes,stroke code activations,intravenous thrombolysis treatments and mechanical thrombectomies during February and march 2019 and *** also collected information on the impact on workflow metrics and on the availability of specialised neurological care and rehabilitation treatments,the characteristics of stroke care for patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection and the impact on human *** compared the activity data between 2019 and 2020 and the information on activity and impact on stroke care between regions classified according to the disease incidence *** Fifty-seven(75%)of all stroke units in Spain responded to the *** was an overall reduction in admissions for all stroke types during the outbreak’s peak and in the number of stroke code activations and intravenous thrombolysis treatments,results that were independent of the COVID-19 incidence *** reported a delay in workflow metrics and a reduction of admissions to stroke units,outpatient clinics and rehabilitation *** pathways and protocols for managing stroke patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection have been *** The COVID-19 outbreak has jeopardised all phases of stroke *** a consequence,some patients with stroke did not receive adequate treatment.

The Mesoamerican Ministers of Health have set 2020 as the target for malaria elimination to be achieved in the region. Imported malaria cases are a potential threat to countries attempting elimination or working to prevent resurgence. We report the first imported Plasmodium ovale infection with molecular confirmation in Central America, which occurred in a Guatemalan soldier that had been deployed in Africa. The obstacles for its diagnosis using the standard microscopy technique and the need to improve its detection are discussed.

Here,we propose a method to determine the thickness of the most common transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) placed on the surface of transparent stamps,used for the deterministic placement of two-dimensional materials,by analyzing the red,green and blue channels of transmission-mode optical microscopy images of the *** particular,the blue channel transmittance shows a large and monotonic thickness dependence,making it a very convenient probe of the flake *** method proves to be robust given the small flake-to-flake variation and the insensitivity to doping changes of *** also tested the method for MoSe2,WS2 and *** results provide a reference guide to identify the number of layers of this family of materials on transparent substrates only using optical microscopy.

Utility of C-Reactive Protein and Procalcitonin for Detecting Bloodstream Infection in Patients with HIV/AIDS

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected persons, are at high risk for developing a bloodstream infection. In order to evaluate the usefulness of C-reactive protein (CRP) and procalcitonin (PTC) in the detection of bloodstream infection in HIV, a case-control study was conducted from February to December 2012. PCT and CPR levels were measured in 2 groups. PCT concentrations were measured by the VIDAS®?Brahms PCT assay, and CRP concentrations were determined by CRP latex. Values were calculated for both biomarkers and discriminative ability of PCT and CRP was analyzed using ROC curves. There were no significant differences between the study group and the control groups with respect to CRP levels. However, they were much higher PCT levels in patients with bacteremia. PCT showed greater discriminating ability compared to CRP, and proved to be a valuable tool for the detection of systemic bacterial infections in HIV infected patients.

Organic agriculture is increasingly used as an alternative to conventional agriculture due to its positive impact on the health of ecosystems and agroecosystems. However, the outcome of organic agriculture in terms of the production of various crops remains uncertain due to the influence of many variables, rising questions about its advantages over conventional agriculture. This study assessed the impacts of organic agricultural system on arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi diversity in soil and green tomato (Physalis ixocarpa Brot. ex Horn) crop production. A field experiment was conducted using a random block design with five repetitions of the following treatments: a) Control (no fertilization, NF);b) Vermicompost use (OTV);c) OTV with vermicompost leaching (OTH);and d) Inorganic fertilization (CST). Throughout the crop cycle, soil samples were analyzed chemically, the relative growth rate (RGR) of the plants was measured, and the colonization and diversity of AM fungi were quantified in roots and soil;finally, above-ground, root biomass, and fruit production were measured. Organic fertilization (OTV, OTH) increased (p p > 0.05). It is concluded that organic agriculture management is essential to promote a greater AM fungi diversity and fungi root colonization. Plant-AM fungi interaction increases growth rates and it allows a similar tomato production compared with conventional agriculture.
